Evansville Retired Teachers Association Holiday Luncheon Featuring Evansville Philharmonic Duo

Thursday, December 14, 2023

The Evansville Retired Teachers Association will celebrate the Holidays on December 14, 2023, with a luncheon at the Embrace Church at 6300 Washington Ave. Evansville, IN at noon followed by a program featuring the Philharmonic Duo  of Anthony Rideout and Kelly Georgeson from the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.  Following the performance, Kristi Miller, ERTA member and former EVSC vocal music teacher, will lead the members in carols.

Other special guests will include Dr. David Smith, EVSC Superintendent, Melanie Atwood, Chief Advancement Officer and President of the EVSC Foundation, Amy Walker, EVSC Foundation consultant, and Mr. David Lennen, President of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

In 2022, the Evansville Retired Teachers Association celebrated our 60th Anniversary and was recently honored at the Indiana Retired Teachers Association as one of the oldest chapters in the state.  In October 1962, a group of EVSC teachers in Evansville initially formed a Retired Teacher social group to renew friendships of their teaching years.  In 2010, the Retired Teachers group voted to join the Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) and the organization’s name became Evansville Retired Teachers Association (ERTA) located in Region 9.  After humble beginnings sixty years ago, we continue to meet regularly and we serve our community with many hours of volunteer work.  The  Evansville Retired Teachers website and The Evansville Retired Teachers Facebook page provide examples of our programs and our work in the community.

The Evansville Retired Teachers Association (ERTA) is a vital educational organization of 220 active retired teachers who selflessly give of their time and financial resources to various non-profit community organizations such as Teacher Locker, Frog Follies, Tri-State Food Bank, Hangers, and the Salvation Army Stuff the Bus initiative.    ERTA meets five times during the school year with a luncheon and program featuring such speakers as U of E Coach David Ragland, Bill Bussing – Otters Baseball, the Evansville Wartime Museum, and performances by many local musicians, including EVSC high school choirs and musician Monte Skelton.

The Victory Theatre & Evansville African American Museum Present: Beyond The Mountain Top-A Community Celebration of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

January 11th, 2024

Beyond the Mountain Top promises to be a powerful celebration of Dr. King’s legacy and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. The concert will kick off a series of community events from locations around the city which will include many community partners.

“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter to me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop, and I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will, and He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the Promised Land!” – MLK Jr.

Inspired by his famous speech “I Have Been to the Mountain Top”, this performance of unity reaches to inspire our community to rise up and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy as well as the legacy of our own local African-American heroes. The Evansville African American Museum will present segments about Evansville’s history and our local past and present trailblazers. In addition, the historic Victory stage will showcase for the first time Evansville’s talented music groups with the sounds of R&B, Soul, Jazz and Funk. Featured artists will include DJ Chidi, Georgia Funkadelic, BG3, Gina Moore with Bob Green and Monte Skelton, and Dekar & the Bodyguards. The afterparty will be a 7 Mile Lounge and anyone with a show ticket will enter for free.

The Evansville African American Museum tells the stories of local black histories from 1820 to the present. “We collaborate with other organizations to share the contributions of African Americans I the city of Evansville, in Indiana, the United States, and the world as we celebrate the contributions of all African Americans.” The Evansville African American Museum is a place for meeting, learning, celebration, and discovery. The EAAM sits on the former location of the Lincoln Gardens housing development dedicated by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1937 at 579 South Garvin Steet.

The EAAM will also be accepting sponsorships for the show and donations for their continuing work at the museum. Sponsorship opportunities and donations will benefit the museum. For more information contact Lori Gregory at admin@evvaam.org. A day of service will follow on Saturday, January 13th at the CK Newson Center.

Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased through the Ford Center Ticket office & Ticketmaster.com.

Interviews are currently being set up to bring awareness about the event. If interested in an on-air or pre-recorded interview, please reach out to Megan Smith at msmith@fordcenter.com for scheduling.

The Indiana Department of Insurance Warns Hoosiers to Be Cautious of Discount Offers for Insurance Plans

DECEMBER 11, 2023

Open enrollment ends on January 15. 2024

Indianapolis – The Indiana Department of Insurance is issuing a warning to Hoosiers seeking health insurance coverage through the Federal Marketplace. The department advises caution regarding websites offering rewards like debit or cash cards in exchange for signing up through them. These “lead generating” websites collect users’ personal information and may provide inaccurate information about insurance coverage. The department urges Indiana residents to exercise skepticism regarding third-party websites promoting marketplace health plans and incentives.

“Consumers should verify information directly through official marketplace resources before entering any personal details or selecting a plan,” stated Alexandria Peck, Indiana Department of Insurance Chief Deputy Commissioner of Compliance. If you suspect fraud, contact the Indiana Attorney General’s office at www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/consumer-protection-division.

“If you need assistance, an Indiana Navigator can assist you with the process of signing up for marketplace coverage or you can contact an insurance agent,” Peck stated. You may work with an Indiana Navigator in any county in Indiana free of charge. Find a Navigator in your area.

The Indiana Department of Insurance provides a Marketplace Insurance Providers Map to help you determine what insurance providers are in your county. Hoosiers may be entitled to enhanced financial assistance and subsidies via the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act.

Visit Healthcare.gov to learn about the different types of plans offered through the marketplace.

Vaneta Becker: Applications Open For Indiana
Senate Page Program

DECEMBER 8, 2923

STATEHOUSE (Dec. 7, 2023) — The Indiana Senate is now accepting applications for the 2024 Senate Page Program, said State Sen. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville).

Through the full-day program, students in grades six through 12 tour Indiana’s Statehouse, listen to debates, and help staff with age-appropriate tasks. Students also have the opportunity to meet their state senator.

“Each year, I meet so many bright young Hoosiers from Senate District 50 as they visit us at the Statehouse through this program,” Becker said. “This is truly a valuable experience for any student, and I strongly encourage them to apply.”

The Senate Page Program will begin in January and run through February. Pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays during the legislative session. They begin their day at 8:30 a.m. and are dismissed at 3:30 p.m. Groups serve together on Wednesdays. Serving as a page is considered an excused absence from school. Positions fill quickly, so it is important to apply early.
