Ivy Tech to Host Guest Speakers From SIMA at MLK Celebration Jan. 18
Evansville, IN – Ivy Tech Community College will host the Southern Indiana Mentoring Academy (SIMA) as a part of its celebration of the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. The event is planned for Thursday, Jan. 18, at noon, in Vectren Auditorium on the Ivy Tech campus, 3501 N. First Avenue, Evansville.
The event is free and open to the public.
SIMA will discuss its mission of providing a safe and supportive environment for youth to explore their potential and build meaningful relationships with mentors who care about their success. It’s mission statement says, “We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to grow and learn, and we are committed to making that a reality for the youth of Southern Indiana.
SIMA’s goals are to:
- Provide 1:1 mentorship.
- Increase graduation rates among disadvantaged youth.
- Empower youth to become leaders in their communities.
Maintaining a Strong Economy
Thanks to years of fiscally conservative leadership, Indiana remains one of the most economically competitive states in the nation.
In fact, Indiana:
- Set a new state record for business investment in 2023, with over $28.7 billion in committed investments representing 21,866 new jobs.
- Has the third-lowest cost of living and the fifth-lowest cost of doing business in the nation.
- Has the No. 1 tax climate in the Midwest and the 10th best in the U.S.
Senate Republicans plan to identify more ways to improve our state’s impressive financial standing. Through the State and Local Tax Review Task Force, which met this week, lawmakers continue working to identify and consider long-term, big-picture ways to make our tax system and economy work better for Hoosiers.
Volunteer Opportunities with the Point-In-Time Count
t’s not too late to get involved in the 2024 Point-In-Time (PIT) Count. The PIT Count is an annual count of sheltered and unsheltered individuals and families experiencing homelessness in a single night of the year. This important endeavor means homeless service providers, community partners, and volunteers collaborate to identify unhoused Hoosiers across 91 of Indiana’s 92 counties in partnership with IHCDA. (Marion County conducts their own PIT Count.)
You can learn more about the PIT Count and how you can get involved by watching the 2024 Kickoff Webinar HERE.
How can you contribute to this effort on January 24, 2024? Volunteers help by administering a brief survey, distributing information about the PIT count in your communities, and more. Contact the appropriate PIT Coordinator for more information about how you can volunteer in the community of your choice. You can find your region’s PIT Coordinators’ contact information here. The regions that still need volunteers are: 2a, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 12.

CECI, THUNDERBOLTS SHUT OUT QUAD CITY 3-0
Evansville, In.:  Back with the Thunderbolts following a call-up to the ECHL’s Atlanta Gladiators, goaltender Cole Ceci did not have much work but excelled nonetheless, stopping all 22 shots to play his part in Evansville’s 3-0 blanking of the Quad City Storm on Friday night at Ford Center . The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Saturday, January 6th against the Quad City Storm, puck drop at 7:00pm CT.
Brendan Harrogate opened the scoring for the Thunderbolts only 2:41 into the first period, off a net-front pass from Scott Kirton, also assisted by Grayson Valente.  At 12:36, Bair Gendunov made it a 2-0 lead by cashing in on a 2-on-1 rush from Myles Abbate and Mark Zhukov. While the Thunderbolts outshot the Storm 13-8 in the second period, Brent Moran was stellar in the Quad City net to keep it only 2-0, while Ceci kept making the occasional saves in the Evansville net to keep the lead at no fewer than two goals. At a wider margin of 15 shots to 4 in the third period, the Thunderbolts finally did get one more insurance goal as Gendunov scored his second goal of the game at 3:56 from Zhukov and Abbate. Although things got a bit chippy towards the end and with a late fight between Lincoln Hatten and Quad City’s Nicola Levesque, the score remained unchanged at the finish, with Evansville taking the first game of the weekend doubleheader at Ford Center.
Gendunov finished with two goals and Harrogate with one goal, while Zhukov and Abbate each tallied a pair of assists. In goal, Ceci stopped all 22 shots faced for his 8th win and 2nd shutout of the season. The Thunderbolts and Storm meet again on Saturday, January 6th at Ford Center.
