Interim Director For The Office Of Environmental Adjudication Will Provide Oversight

0

INDIANAPOLIS- Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced today Jefferson Garn will provide oversight of the Office of Environmental Adjudication (OEA) while legislative changes are sought to consolidate OEA with the Office of Administrative Law Proceedings (OALP).

Garn, who is the deputy director and general counsel of OALP, will also serve as interim director of the agency during this time. Judge Mary Davidsen, who has served 20 years as OEA director, will retire on Dec. 29.

Consolidation of the two agencies will provide administrative efficiencies, further modernize case record documentation, and provide greater resources to support the review of environmental cases.  Further details on the transition will be announced after legislation is considered.

OEA was created in 1995 to serve as an independent agency tasked with reviewing actions of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). OALP was created in 2019 to provide a central and independent review of agency disputes of more than 24 state agencies.

UE falls to Cincinnati in road match-up

DECEMBER 30, 2023

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Without the services of Missouri ValleC Conference Newcomer of the Week Ben Humrichous and Freshman of the Week Chuck Bailey III, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team puts up a fight before falling short against the University of Cincinnati on Friday evening.  Evansville held a 10-point lead in the early moments of the second half before the Bearcats stormed back to take a 76-58 win inside Fifth Third Arena.

Yacine Toumi led all players with 17 points and 9 rebounds while Kenny Strawbride Jr. finished with 14 points.  Tanner Cuff registered 13 points in the contest.  Five Bearcats recorded double figures with John Newman III leading the way with 15.

Knocking down their first two shots, the Bearcats took a 5-0 lead.  Josh Hughes found Cam Haffner for a basket to get UE on the board.  Following another field goal by UC, Kenny Strawbridge Jr. scored five in a row to tie the score at 7-7.  Five in a row by Cincinnati saw them retake a 12-7 edge, but a tenacious Aces group responded with six in a row.  Yacine Toumi hit two shots before Strawbridge gave Evansville its first lead at 13-12 with 13:53 on the clock.

Cincinnati wrestled away a 21-18 advantage as the period reached the midway point and that is when both offenses kicked it into high gear.  Over the next six minutes, seven lead changes ensued.  Hughes got the Aces back on track with back-to-back makes to put the lead back in Evansville’s hands.  After UC took a 29-28 edge, Evansville kept rolling.  Six in a row from Tanner Cuff capped a 10-0 stretch that put UE up 38-29 with 1:29 left in the period.

In total, Evansville converted nine out of 11 attempts on during the run.  After Cincinnati hit a late 3-pointer, Toumi converted on the final possession to send his squad into the break with an 8-point lead.  He posted a game-high 13 points in the half as the Aces shot 58.1%

Picking up right where he left off in the first half, Toumi opened the second half with his 15th point to give Evansville its largest lead at 42-32.  Eight in a row, including two triples, saw the Bearcats storm right back.  The run made it a 2-point game in the opening two minutes of the second half.  Their run continued as they would tie it at 45-45 with 15:41 remaining before jumping back in front less than a minute later.  Their rally turned into a 26-4 stretch that saw them turn a 42-32 deficit into a 58-46 lead at the 11:09 mark.

Evansville stayed within 10-12 points over the next sequence, but as the game entered the final minutes, Cincinnati added to its lead and would cruise to the 78-56 victory.  For the game, the Aces shot 41.4% while UC finished at 39.1%.  The Bearcats owned the battle on the glass by a 49-29 margin.

UE opens the new calendar year at Indiana State on January 3.

USI Women’s Basketball secures road victory to open OVC play

0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball secured a 75-37 victory on the road against Southeast Missouri State University Friday night to open the Ohio Valley Conference season.

Friday’s impressive win improved USI’s overall record to 6-5, while Southeast Missouri dropped to 3-9 on the campaign. Southern Indiana also starts 1-0 in conference play after a win against the Redhawks for the second consecutive season.

Southern Indiana had a strong start to the game, taking a quick 7-0 advantage. Redshirt senior guard Addy Blackwell (Bloomington, Indiana) scored USI’s first five points on a three and a runner in the lane. Defensively, the Eagles forced Southeast Missouri into difficult shots and cleaned the glass. Senior forward Madi Webb (Bedford, Indiana) also established an early presence with seven points in the first period. USI closed out the first quarter with a defensive stop and a layup to lead 23-10 after one. Southern Indiana opened the game by shooting over 50 percent and holding the Redhawks below 20 percent in the first quarter.

The Screaming Eagles’ solid defensive work led to more offensive opportunities to begin the second period. Junior guard Vanessa Shafford (Linton, Indiana) tallied seven straight points at the beginning of the second stanza to hit 10 points for the ninth consecutive game. A three-point jumper by Shafford put USI ahead by 18, 30-12, two minutes into the second. As Southern Indiana continued to share the ball and the scoring, USI’s first-half lead climbed to as high as 23 with three minutes left until the intermission. The defense held SEMO scoreless for the last two and a half minutes, as USI took a 41-19 halftime lead.

The second half began much like the first with Southern Indiana’s defense making things difficult for Southeast Missouri. On the other end, the Screaming Eagles received makes from beyond the arc by Blackwell and senior forward Meredith Raley (Haubstadt, Indiana) to help spark a 12-0 run in the middle of the third quarter, pushing USI’s lead to 53-21. Raley and freshman forward Chloe Gannon (Manchester, Tennessee) got some inside looks to help USI outscore SEMO 20-5 in the third frame and carry a 61-24 lead to the fourth.

The Eagles closed out the 75-37 win with all 14 fourth-quarter points coming off the bench. USI totaled 32 bench points on Friday night.

Southern Indiana shot 40 percent (27-67) for the game with eight makes from three and 13 made free throws. USI also outrebounded SEMO 49-34. Raley recorded her third career double-double and first of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds while also dishing out five assists. Shafford led all scorers with 15 points, and Gannon poured in 13 points for the third consecutive contest. The Eagles’ defense held the Redhawks to 20 percent shooting (12-60) in the game.

GOALIES STEAL THE SHOW IN THUNDERBOLTS 2-0 LOSS TO STORM

0

Moline, Ill.:  Despite both teams combining for 55 shots on goal, only a single shot would beat either goaltender as the Quad City Storm shut out the Thunderbolts 2-0 on Friday in Moline.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Sunday, December 31st against the Macon Mayhem, puck drop at 7:00pm CT.

The first period saw the only goal for most of the game, as Tommy Tsicos scored for Quad City on a power move to the net at 14:39.  Much like Tuesday’s game in Huntsville, the Thunderbolts got better as the game went along, and both teams continued to trade chances while both goaltenders kept making saves.  The only other goal in the game came in the final minute, as Matt Ustaski scored into the empty Evansville net with 27 seconds remaining in the contest.  The Thunderbolts only went shorthanded a single time in another strong showing of discipline, and with only the one goal against, Ty Taylor stopped 28 of 29 shots faced and proved that Evansville is still very much in good hands between the pipes with Cole Ceci called up to the ECHL.  The Thunderbolts and Storm meet again on Saturday, December 30th at Vibrant Arena.

Eagles lose a heartbreaker in OT, 93-91

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Southeast Missouri State University, 93-91, to open the 2023-24 Ohio Valley Conference schedule Friday in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles fall to 3-11 overall and start OVC play 0-1, while the Redhawks are 5-8 overall, 1-0 OVC.

USI flew out to a quick lead to open the game, scoring the first four points of the contest. SEMO would respond and tied the game as the Eagles and the Redhawks would trade buckets for the next seven minutes.

After falling behind by three, 17-14, junior guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) tied the game with an old fashion three-point play, 17-17, while sophomore forward Kiyron Powell (Evansville, Indiana) gave USI the lead, 20-19, with 7:22 until halftime. The buckets were a part of an 11-4 runs by USI that put the Eagles up four, 25-21, with 5:42 in the opening 20 minutes.

USI posted its largest lead of the first half, 31-26, at 2:06 when senior forward Nolan Causwell (Duluth, Georgia) converted on a pair of free throws. SEMO, however, would battle back to take to get out in front by halftime, 34-32, after an 8-2 run.

In the second half, the Redhawks burst out of the locker room with a 17-7 run and led, 51-39, before seven minutes were gone in the final half. USI rallied to cut the deficit to 51-47 with an 8-0 burst that ended with a junior forward Javius Moore (McComb, Mississippi) free throw with 9:59 on the clock.

USI and SEMO would trade buckets until the Eagles used an 8-3 run to close the gap to 64-62 with 3:51 to play. The Redhawks responded with an 8-0 surge for a 71-62 in an attempt to put the game out of reach with less than two minutes to play.

The Eagles rallied once again with a 9-1 run, led by junior guard/forward AJ Smith (Edwardsville, Illinois) (six points) and sophomore guard Ryan Hall (Kettering, Ohio) (three points), and pull USI to within one, 72-71.

Smith had a chance to put the Eagles in front with a drive down the lane, but had his shot blocked with six seconds left and set the stage for sophomore guard Jack Campion (Milton, Wisconsin).

After SEMO extended its lead to 74-71 on a pair of free throws, USI got down the floor quick and Campion launched the last second three-pointer to send the game to overtime.

In the overtime, the Eagles and Redhawks exchanged runs but USI was never able to get back into the lead. Hernandez would give the Eagles one last chance, tying the game with a layup, 91-91, with nine ticks left on the clock, but the Redhawks got the final bucket with one second for the 93-91 win.

In the scoring column, Hernandez led the Eagles with a career-high 35 points. He was nine-of-17, including a three-pointer, and 16-of-17 from the stripe.

Smith followed with his sixth double-double of the season, dropping in 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The sophomore was eight-of-16 from the field and three-of-three from the stripe.

The difference in the game came outside the arc and underneath the bucket. USI hit just five-of-20 from beyond the arc, compared to eight-of-18 by SEMO, and was outrebounded, 39-36.

Next Up For USI:
USI concludes the three-game road swing and the first weekend of OVC action with a visit to Lindenwood University Sunday in St. Charles, Missouri. The Lions are 6-7 overall and begin their 2023-24 OVC schedule with USI on Sunday.

After last season sweep, USI leads the all-time series with Lindenwood, 6-0. The Eagles took the opening meeting in St. Charles, 81-65, and completed the sweep at Screaming Eagles Arena, 74-64, for one of two OVC series sweeps last season.

Gov. Holcomb announces $18.1 million grant to support child care

FSSA awards 64 businesses, organizations, and schools in the first round of grants

INDIANAPOLIS — Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced today the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning is awarding $18.1 million in employer-sponsored child care grants to 64 businesses, community groups and school corporations. The initiative, part of Gov. Holcomb’s 2023 Next Level Agenda, is mobilizing employers and communities to create or expand child care offerings that address the needs of working Hoosiers.

“We wanted those who know first-hand the critical needs of their employees, and those who are best positioned to partner in their communities, to create child care solutions for their workforce, and they delivered,” Gov. Holcomb said. “This effort harnesses the combined efforts of businesses, community groups, and schools that want to support working Hoosiers’ careers and our youngest learners across the state.”

Thirty-three employers plan to provide on-site child care to their employees, and 13 will offer child care tuition benefits to their workers. The remaining awardees plan to support child care for their employees in a variety of other ways, such as reserving seats at partner child care centers. The full list of allowable uses and details can be found here.

This round of awardees will receive 72% of available funding from the $25 million fund. Round two awardees – which will be announced in early 2024 – will receive the remaining funds.

Thirty large employers with 1,000 or more employees will receive up to $750,000 each. Twenty-five mid-sized employers with between 100 and 999 employees will receive up to $350,000. And nine small employers with between 20 and 99 employees will receive up to $50,000.

“I look forward to seeing all the inventive approaches to child care come to life in communities across the state, and partnering with more businesses, community groups and schools on this important, collaborative effort to support children, their families and the state’s economy,” said Courtney Penn, OECOSL director. “Birth to age 5 are the most critical in a person’s life, and now more of our next generation will receive early education that is crucial to their brain and social development.”

The program, a partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, uses a portion of the state’s remaining federal relief funds from the COVID-19 pandemic and is part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen the early care and education sector, providing support for today’s workforce and investing in tomorrow’s. The program is also supported by the Indiana Manufacturers Association.
