SENATOR BRAUN STATEMENT ON $1.6 TRILLION SPENDING AGREEMENT

1

Senator Mike Braun released the following statement about the $1.6 trillion spending agreementnegotiated by Congressional leaders.

“We’re spending a trillion dollars more than we take in every 6 months, with our debt spiraling out of control and families still paying for Biden’s spending spree with everything they buy. This $1.6 trillion proposal will just continue Washington’s spending addiction and do nothing to stop the emergency on our southern border that has brought millions of illegal aliens into our country.” – Senator Mike Braun

2023 Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights raises impressive amount to provide Easterseals therapy

0

The Easterseals Rehabilitation Center reports another successful season for Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights, with the 30thannual light show raising $186,117 between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. In the 30 years of the event, net proceeds have now reached more than $4.5 million to underwrite essential therapy services and inclusive early education at the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center.

Event traffic increased by 20% over the previous year, with an approximate total of 15,340 vehicles (including horse-drawn carriages) visiting this year’s display. Easterseals estimates this year’s proceeds will help to underwrite more than 2,000 therapy sessions for local children and adults with disabilities.

This year’s total also included an impressive approximate $29,250 in extra donations from Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights visitors, above and beyond their admission fees.  Throughout the 40-night event, the community showed up again and again – whether it was to find Andy the Elf in the Park and interact with Easterseals on social media, or to attend the annual Bright Lights 5k race and 1-mile community walk – all to support the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center.

During the upcoming weekend, hard-working volunteers from Teamsters Local 215, Operating Engineers 181, Feller Towing, Meisler’s Trailers, IBEW Local 16, NECA, and Electrical JATC will dismantle and remove light displays at Evansville’s Garvin Park. The annual fundraising event and holiday tradition wouldn’t be possible without the expertise and time donated by members of these groups. Additionally, Easterseals wants to thank the more than 80 display sponsors, and all the companies, community organizations, and private families who volunteered throughout the event.

Details for the 31st annual Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights are already in the works with plans to replace some older displays and provide opportunities for new display sponsors.  It will open on Thanksgiving night and will run through New Year’s Day. More information on the annual event can be found at https://ritzysfantasyoflights.com.

Companies, organizations, churches and families interested in sponsoring a light display or volunteering at the event are invited to contact Easterseals Director of Special Events, Carolyn Franklin, at 812.437.2607.

Major sponsors are Ritzy’s, IBEW Local 16, NECA, Teamsters Local 215, Electrical JATC, International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT) DC91, IUOE Local 181 – Operating Engineers, ABC 25 / CW 7, Evansville Living, Lamar Advertising, Tools 4 Teaching, 99.5 WKDQ, MY105.3, 103 GBF, KISS 106, Newstalk 1280 AM, 92.5 WBKR, 1490AM/99.1 FM WOMI, Kenny Kent Chevrolet. Special thanks to the Evansville Department of Parks & Recreation for their continued support of Ritzy’s Fantasy of Lights in Garvin Park.

USI promotes Sickman, Platts to financial leadership positions

0

The University of Southern Indiana has promoted Jeff Sickman to Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration and Assistant Treasurer and Jina Platts to Director of University Accounting. Both positions are effective immediately. Sickman will report to Steve Bridges, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and Platts will report to Sickman.

“I am confident that the 50-plus years of combined experience from Jeff and Jina will promote enhanced collaboration between the functions essential to the University as it strives to strengthen its financial viability under the current Strategic Plan and beyond,” says Bridges. “Both of their skillsets are vital for the University and its successful financial operation, and I could not be more excited for them to serve in their respective roles.”

Sickman has assumed his new position alongside Mary Hupfer, Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration and Foundation Fiscal Officer, who will retire July 1, 2025, with 34 years of service at USI. She will be on sabbatical leave from January 1 through June 30, 2025.

As Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration and Assistant Treasurer, Sickman is responsible for the functional areas of University Accounting, University Budgeting, Bursar, Campus Store and the Student Financial Success Center. He also oversees the preparation of the annual financial report, the operating and capital budgets and the biennial budget request to the State of Indiana, as well as present proposed budgets and audited financial reports to the USI Board of Trustees.

During his 30-year USI career, Sickman has served in several leadership roles, most recently as Controller and Assistant Treasurer since 2016.

Sickman received a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1993 and a master’s degree in business administration in 2000, both from USI.

As Director of University Accounting, Platts oversees all University accounting functions, including preparation of the annual financial statements, leadership of internal and external audits, implementation of new accounting standards and development of interim financial statements for the USI Board of Trustees. She also administers all University Accounting guidelines, general ledger accounting, grant accounting, property accounting and accounts payable.

Most recently, Platts served as Assistant Controller since 2011. In her nearly 24-year career, she has served in many other leadership roles at the University.

Platts earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in business administration, both from USI.

Gov. Holcomb unveils One Stop to Start a navigation system connecting Hoosiers to more workforce opportunities and training programs

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb today announced a statewide workforce development campaign – “One Stop to Start” – designed to raise awareness and help connect Hoosiers with existing workforce- and job-related training programs and resources.

The campaign’s website, OneStopToStart.IN.Gov, serves as the comprehensive source for individuals and Indiana employers to learn about workforce and education training programs and grants the state offers. The site also provides one-on-one assistance for both Hoosiers and employers through a team of dedicated Navigators who can help simplify the process and make relevant connections. The Navigators are available Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

“The overall goal of “One Stop to Start” is to make sure that Hoosiers have awareness of and access to the programs that can get them on that path to realizing a high-wage career,” said Holcomb. “Perhaps it’s a short-term certificate or a two- or four-year degree. There’s a pathway for all Hoosiers, and “One Stop to Start” will help individuals discover various options that fit their needs.”

The campaign’s website introduces the types of careers that are trending in emerging industries such as microelectronics and semiconductors, electric vehicles and mobility systems, smart manufacturing and robotics, and clean and alternative energy production. It also reaffirms the importance of critical need jobs including healthcare, education, public safety and skilled trades.

“Indiana’s workplace footprint is changing. Our state has long been a leader in industries such as advanced manufacturing, engineering, biopharma and life sciences,” said Holcomb. “As Indiana continues to take workforce development to the next level, we must educate, skill up and train Hoosiers for the economies and industries of the future.”

One Stop to Start is led by the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the Indiana Department of Corrections, IN Vets and the Family and Social Services Administration

EPA proposes stronger air pollution standards for large facilities that burn municipal solid waste

0

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday announced a proposal to strengthen Clean Air Act standards for large facilities that burn municipal solid waste. If finalized, the updated standards would reduce emissions of nine pollutants, including smog- and soot-forming sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, by approximately 14,000 tons per year, improving air quality for overburdened communities living near these facilities. These proposed standards reflect current technologies available to control pollution in a cost-effective fashion.

“President Biden believes every person deserves clean air to breathe and the opportunity to lead a healthy life, and EPA’s proposal is just the latest action to achieve this vision. By reducing harmful pollution and improving air quality, this rule will also advance environmental justice for nearby communities already overburdened with pollution,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “EPA is committed to working with communities and state, local, and Tribal governments to ensure that large facilities burning municipal waste utilize the most up-to-date and cost-effective control technologies to reduce pollution and protect public health.”

The proposed standards would apply to 57 facilities with 152 units that have the capacity to combust more than 250 tons per day of municipal solid waste. Nearly 4 million Americans live within 3 miles of these large facilities, which are disproportionately located in low-income communities and communities of color. Today’s proposal supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s unprecedented and ongoing efforts to protect overburdened communities from harmful pollution, and is likely to reduce existing disproportionate and adverse effects on communities with environmental justice concerns. The proposed standards are based on emission levels achieved by the best controlled and lower-emitting sources, and limit emissions of nine pollutants: particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, lead, cadmium, mercury, and dioxins/furans.

The Clean Air Act requires EPA to evaluate these standards every five years in order to take into account developments in pollution control technologies and techniques. EPA last revised these standards in 2006. From day one, the Biden-Harris Administration has made advancing environmental justice a top priority, including by delivering on long overdue updates to pollution standards.

The estimated benefits of this action far outweigh the expected pollution control costs. After accounting for compliance costs of the rule, EPA estimated the net present value of health benefits from the proposed rule, due to reductions in particulate matter and ozone alone, to be up to $14 billion over 20 years. Reductions of mercury, lead, and other hazardous air pollutants required by the proposal are expected to result in additional unquantified economic and public health benefits. EPA believes this action is also likely to advance environmental justice by reducing existing disproportionate and adverse effects on overburdened communities.

EPA will accept comment on the proposal for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. EPA will hold an informational webinar and will announce details on our website shortly.

USI MAC/Pace Galleries presenting 2024 Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship

0

The Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship Exhibition, Apokálypsis, is currently on display at the McCutchan Art Center/Pace (MAC/Pace) Galleries in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center on campus. The show will be on display through Friday, February 16 and is open to the public at no charge.

Austin Delano, the 2024 recipient of the Fellowship, is the featured artist for Apokálypsis. Delano’s work grows from a desire to combine well-crafted utilitarian objects with a range of narrative and conceptual themes through a variety of techniques. These techniques include traditional joinery, carving, woodcut illustration and more. These pieces are inspired by a fascination with all manner of representations of meaning or purpose such as human relationships, nature, history, mythology, folklore and ritual.

A public reception for the exhibition will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 24 in the MAC/Pace Galleries.

The Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship is a competitive program awarded to one graduating senior or recent alum from USI’s Art and Design Department annually. The goal of the Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship is to fund a post-undergraduate year, allowing the recipient to focus on their studio practice to expand their artistic vision and enhance their portfolio, to gain maturity as an art maker and to successfully gain entrance to graduate school in their area of expertise.

The MAC/PACE Galleries are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

PASSED THE SENATE: BRAUN/SINEMA BILL TO IMPROVE HEALTH & WELFARE FOR FEDERAL WORKING DOGS

0

WASHINGTON — The Working Dog Health and Welfare Act – introduced by Senator Mike Braun and Senator Kyrsten Sinema – has passed the U.S. Senate. The bill will support the safe and humane treatment of federal working dogs.

This bill is the first bill to pass the U.S. Senate in 2024.

“Working dogs” are used for the detection of explosives, narcotics, and missing persons, as well as serving in patrol and navigation capacities.

This legislation includes programs that detect abuse and neglect of these animals, as well as ensuring emergency medical care, exercise, food and water, rest and off-duty time, and medical needs after retirement.

“Federal working dogs, who work diligently alongside their human companions, risk their lives daily to ensure the safety of Americans. As both a leader in the Senate for animal welfare and a dog owner, I am proud that this bipartisan legislation to ensure these animals are protected has passed the Senate.” — Senator Braun

“Our commonsense legislation protects Arizona working dogs from inhumane treatment – ensuring they are strong and healthy enough to keep Arizonans safe and secure.” — Senator Sinema

“Senate passage of the Working Dog Health and Welfare Act is a strong step towards improving the health and welfare of animals. Working dogs within our government agencies operate alongside human partners to perform invaluable services—including helping to sniff out threats, sense dangerous substances, and rescue those in peril. We rely on these amazing animals for help, and it is past time we treat them with the respect they deserve. I applaud the action in the Senate and look forward to the legislation’s continued forward momentum.” —American Humane, President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert

“Animal welfare issues often bridge political divides. The bipartisan Working Dog Health and Safety Act prioritizes the welfare and safety of working dogs across the federal government. This bill will help our canine friends receive the best care when they are in the line of duty.” – Sara Amundson, President, Humane Society Legislative Fund

“We applaud Senator Braun for his outstanding leadership on this widely-supported bill to protect dogs purchased with taxpayer dollars. We’ve previously recognized Senator Braun for his exceptional work to defend dogs from abuse and he continues to lead the way as a champion for animals and taxpayers.” –White Coat Waste Project Senior Vice President Justin Goodman

The American Kennel Club lauds passage of the Working Dog Health and Welfare Act. This measure, championed by Senator Braun, will ensure implementation of important recommendations for protections and standards of care for U.S. Government working dogs [as outlined in the January 2022 Government Accountability Office report, “Working Dogs: Federal Agencies Need to Better Address Health and Welfare”. ] Government working dogs do extraordinary work every day in protecting Americans at home and abroad. These dogs deserve our efforts to provide them quality care and the protections too.” – Sheila Goffe, AKC Vice President, Government Relations & Member, AKC Detection Dog Task Force
