Lt. Gov. Crouch, IHCDA, CSH announce 2024 Supportive Housing Institute Teams

Indiana Supportive Housing Institute celebrates 16th year

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 31, 2024) – Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), and Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) have announced the four teams selected to participate in the 2024 Indiana Supportive Housing Institute.

The Supportive Housing Institute is a premier workshop experience that helps housing developers, service providers, property managers and community-based organizations jumpstart supportive housing projects that combine affordable housing with access to supportive services. The Institute sessions outline evidence-based practical steps towards implementing supportive housing developments targeted to communities in Indiana. The teams were selected through a competitive process.

“The Institute continues to be an intentional opportunity for organizations to develop detailed, individualized supportive housing plans,” said Lt. Gov. Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “Past participants have experienced great success applying the Institute’s training to development in their communities and we are excited to continue encouraging dynamic projects in 2024.”

This year marks the 16th year of the Indiana Supportive Housing Institute and the ongoing partnership between IHCDA and CSH to bring more affordable supportive housing across the state for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

“The Indiana Supportive Housing Institute is an opportunity for IHCDA to promote housing stability for those experiencing homelessness,” said Jacob Sipe, executive director of IHCDA. “It’s important that IHCDA and our partners align affordable housing developments to the current needs in communities. We congratulate the teams selected for the Institute, and look forward to collaborating with them to advance supportive housing in the state.”

“CSH is thrilled to partner with IHCDA for another year of the Supportive Housing Institute, a display of our shared values and commitment to increase the supply of affordable and supportive housing in Indiana,” said Lori Phillips-Steele, Director of CSH Indiana. “This work is critical in helping individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness across the state to receive crucial services and quality housing.”

Over the next few months, these teams will work closely with IHCDA and CSH through targeted training and group exercises incorporating CSH’s Quality Supportive Housing Standards. Teams will also receive technical assistance and be presented with pre-development financing opportunities. The Institute will culminate with teams presenting their final plans to CSH, IHCDA and Institute sponsors.

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry and Chief of Police Philip Smith are proud and honored to announce Nathan Hassler as the next Assistant Chief of the Evansville Police Department!

Assistant Chief Hassler is an Evansville native that’s proud of his education, first as a grade school student at Westside Catholic School and as a graduate of Mater Dei High School. He also attended the University of Southern Indiana before being hired as an Evansville Police Officer in 2010.

Assistant Chief Hassler is a graduate of the Southwestern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, class 10-8. Upon completion of the police academy Hassler was assigned as a motor patrol officer in Evansville’s West sector. During his time in motor patrol, he served in Mobile Field Force, Gang Task Force, and as a Field Training Officer.

               In 2016 Hassler was promoted to Detective and assigned to the Meth Suppression Unit. A short time later, Hassler earned his certification as a Clandestine Laboratory Investigator from the Drug Enforcement Administration in Quantico, Virginia.

          Hassler was promoted to Sergeant in June of 2021 and supervised motor patrol officers on Evansville’s west side until he was transferred to supervise detectives in the Evansville-Vanderburgh Joint Drug Task Force.

Hassler is very proud of his career thus far at the Evansville Police Department. He is especially proud and thankful for the time he had the privilege to serve in the Joint Drug Task Force. Hassler is looking forward to drawing on his experience to assist Chief Smith in making the Evansville Police Department a better and more effective department for not only the employees, but also for the citizens in which we serve.

Assistant Chief Hassler and his family are dedicated to service in the Evansville community. His parents Lynn and Clare are proud of him, as well as his brothers, Jake, a fellow Evansville Police Officer, and Luke, a Catholic Priest in the Diocese of Evansville.

Mayor Terry to Introduce Interfaith Council

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry will introduce members of her planned Interfaith Council at a news conference tomorrow at noon.

The Council, comprised of faith leaders from across the cultural and religious spectrum, will join the mayor for the news conference in Room 301 of the Civic Center. Official meetings will begin after the Evansville City Council adopts an ordinance creating the Interfaith Council; Councilman Ben Trockman (D-1st Ward) will introduce that ordinance at the February 12 City Council meeting.

Aces take on UIC on Wednesday at Ford Center

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Fresh off its third Missouri Valley Conference win of the season, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team looks for more when they host UIC on Wednesday evening.  Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT with ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network having the coverage.

Season Win Notes

– For the first time in five seasons, the Purple Aces have won double digit games, earning win #10 of 2023 with an 82-51 victory over Tennessee Tech on Dec. 20

– With the win, UE clinched its first 10-win season since earning 11 victories in 2018-19; the 10th win also doubled the win total from the entirety of last season

– UE earned its 12th win of the season on Jan. 27 against Illinois State; it is the first time UE has won 12 games since 2017-18

– When Evansville racked up its 11th win on Jan. 17 against Valpo, the program won as many games this season as the last two years combined

Last Time Out

– Another total team effort resulted in the Purple Aces earning a 58-54 win over the Redbirds on Saturday

– After ISU opened the game on a 10-2 run, UE rallied to tie it up at 10-10 and would lead by six at the half

– Evansville’s lead reached 13 points in the second half, but the Redbirds cut their deficit to two in the final minute

– Yacine Toumi led a trio of double-digit scorers with 17 points while Josh Hughes tallied 11 and Tanner Cuff recorded 10

The Run Continues

– Following the Dec. 2 game against UNI, Yacine Toumi’s season scoring average stood at 8.8 points per game

– In the 13 games since, he has scored a total of 173 points, an average of 13.3 PPG

– Toumi has scored 13+ points in each of the last four games and has finished in double figures in 11 of those 13 games

– His efficiency continues to rank among the best in the MVC as his 57.5% shooting is 5th in the league

– For the first time this season, Tanner Cuff has posted consecutive double figure scoring games; he scored 13 points at UNI before recording 10 against Illinois State

– Going into the road game against the Panthers, he was averaging 5.0 PPG in the previous six games; he has 11.5 PPG in the last two outings

– Over the last 4 games, Cuff has 8 assists and just 2 turnovers; the 6 games prior saw him post 6 assists and 10 turnovers

– Cuff’s season assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.43 is second in the MVC

You Better Watch Out

– Kenny Strawbridge Jr. has been credited with an average of 1.75 steals per game – third in the MVC

– Over the last four games, he has upped that average to 2.5 with 10 swipes

– While he has averaged 7.3 points in the last 6 games, Strawbridge continues to rank 4th on the team with a 9.6 PPG

Scouting the Opponent

– UIC heads to the Ford Center with an overall record of 8-13 and a 1-9 mark in the MVC

– The Flames have dropped six games in a row after defeating Valparaiso on Jan. 6

– In non-conference play, the Flames were 7-4 with wins over Loyola, Middle Tennessee, George Washington and Jacksonville State

– Isaiah Rivera is the leading scorer for UIC, recording an average of 14.2 points per game

– He is a 46.6% shooter from the field and has converted 41.4% of his 3-point tries

Reitz Home Museum

We hope 2024 is off to a safe and healthy start for you. The new year already promises meaningful change for the Reitz Home Museum. As of January 25, the position of Executive Director is vacant. The Trustees have formed a Search Committee to identify the most qualified and appropriate candidate to continue the mission of preserving the legacy of our beloved Reitz Home.

In the interim, the existing staff is still operating the Museum.

Also, in recent days, many vacant board positions have been filled with the community volunteers who share in vision of the Reitz Home. The Trustees are committed to restoring abandoned fundraising events, improving the financial position of the museum, and increasing the visibility of the Reitz Home throughout the Greater Evansville Region.

The Trustees are each stepping up to become even more active in the organization and are dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition in the coming weeks and months.

Assistant Chief Smith Promoted to Chief of Police

Yesterday, Evansville Mayor Terry appointed Assistant Chief Philip Smith to current Chief of

Police. During Mayor Terry’s press conference, she stated “these are incredibly important

appointments; public safety is a top priority, providing a safe and secure environment, so ensuring that

we have the right people to lead those areas has been my focus and the focus of my dedicated transition

team who worked alongside me in this process.” With the promotion to Chief for Chief Smith, Chief

Bolin signed his resignation letter after serving 26 years for the Evansville Police Department with 12 of

those being Chief; he retires as the longest consecutive serving Chief in EPD history. For the past three

years, Chief Smith was Assistant Chief under Chief Bolin and was able to shadow his work during those

years while also gaining a great mentor and friend.

A statement made by Chief Bolin describes his confidence in Chief Smith’s promotion;

“Growing up on the southeast side of Evansville, I never dreamed I would someday be the Chief of

Police. Had I done it for one day, it would have been the honor of a lifetime, and to do it for over twelve

years has been the ride of a lifetime. I will be running out my accrued time off and retiring from the

Evansville Police Department at the end of March. As this chapter ends, I’m not sure what lies ahead,

but I’m optimistic about my future. By now, most of you should know that I embrace my dorky side, so I

share this specific photo of Mr. Miyagi as this was how he looked at Daniel at the end of The Karate

Kid. This is how I feel about Chief Philip Smith today. An overwhelming since of pride best sums me up

right now. The number one rule for any leader should be finding, developing, and mentoring their

replacement. I have said for years that I hope Phil replaces me as Chief and today is that day. I will be a

phone call away when/if he ever has a question and he will remain one of my closest friends. I wish him

nothing but the best and he has my full support.

With the transition already in effect, we want to take the time to thank Chief Bolin for the past

twelve years. During those twelve years Chief Bolin was instrumental in building and maintaining

relationships within the community, created numerous non-profit organizations to benefit children and

those with illnesses in our area, Cops Connecting with Kids and 911 Gives Hope, and was overall a

trailblazer locally and nationally on community policing. Chief Bolin was Chief during some of the most

difficult times in a policeman’s career and always prided himself on doing the right thing and

progressing forward. With Chief Smith following in his footsteps, we anticipate forward progression and

a great outlook, not only for the Evansville Police Department but for the citizens of Evansville.

USI Athletic Communications USI Women’s Soccer gearing up for spring schedule

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer has announced its 2024 spring schedule, featuring six exhibitions during the spring season in preparation for the 2024 championship season in the fall.

The spring schedule kicks off February 24 with a road trip to Belmont University and concludes April 18 with a visit to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.

The spring slate includes a home date at Strassweg Field on March 16, as USI will host multiple scrimmages against Bellarmine University and Murray State University that day. Bellarmine and Murray State will also face each other on the same day.

In early April, the Screaming Eagles will travel to the University of Illinois, out of the Big Ten Conference, April 7 before going to Indiana State University on April 13.

“We are extremely excited for the 2024 Spring schedule,” USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein said. “The plan was to schedule the toughest spring season in program history, and we feel like we have done that. As we continue to transition from Division II to Division I, we are using the spring to develop our current roster and get better each day. All six spring opponents are successful and talented programs, so each game will be a great test. We are eager to have the opportunity to play a Big Ten opponent at the University of Illinois, which will be a good measure to see where we are as we head into year three of D-I.”

USI Women’s Soccer heads into its third NCAA Division I season in 2024, coming off a top-four finish and a quarterfinal appearance in the 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The 2024 fall championship schedule will be released at a later date.
