University of Evansville Announces Remaining Black History Month Events

EVANSVILLE, IND. (02/14/2024) The University of Evansville’s (UE) Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) is sponsoring a long list of events to celebrate Black History Month throughout February.

The Black History Month Kickoff took place on February 1, it was held at the Multi-Student Commons.

The University of Evansville African American Alumni Association’s (UEAAA) Documentary was screened on Tuesday, February 6 at the Central Library. Our Story: Once the Doors Opened was produced by 1980 graduate Arnell Hill. Co-narrated by Leirra Carter ’24 and directed by black Indianapolis videographer Aaron Turner, Our Story is a 45-minute documentary on the history of black students at Evansville College/University of Evansville, from 1934 to the early 2000 era. For the Health of it! – In collaboration with the UE Nursing Department, students were able to receive free medical health assessments as part of Black History Month.

The Black Student Union held a Friday Hang Out for the month of February on Friday, February 9. However, it was not open to the public.

Black Student Union is collaborating with Young & Established on a Black & White Charity Ball taking place on Saturday, February 24 at 8:00 p.m. There will be a live DJ, 3 cash bars, hors d’oeuvres, multiple picture booths, silent auction, half pot, and lots of giveaways! The CDEI and the Eatery are collaborating to culminate the end of Black History. CDEI is partnering for Soul Food Sunday with the theme of “Let’s Go to Big Mama’s House.” This fellowship dining experience will be open to the public as well. This event is Sunday, February 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and will cost $12.08 per person.

Lunch and Learn – “I Am Not My Hair”

This Lunch and Learn (lunch is provided) session for Black History Month will shine a spotlight on women of color making significant strides, delving deeply into their presence in various spheres, particularly within higher education, and examining the significance for women of color in 2024. This will take place on February 29 at 11:00 a.m. in Eykamp 251, you can register (free) at this link.

The CDEI office will close out the Black History Month with Celebration of Hip Hop Then & Now featuring Manon Voice at Butler University, Professor of Music-teaching Hip Hop: History, Evolution, and Culture and DJ Stylistic, Education and Indiana Pacers DJ. This event will take place on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 6 p.m. in Eykamp Hall Room 251, free admission to the public.

Indiana remains a top agricultural state according to new census

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 13, 2024) — According to the newly released agricultural census data from The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Indiana remains a top agricultural state, with agricultural products valued at over $18 billion.

“This data shows that agriculture remains a pillar of the Indiana economy with the total value of agriculture production growing 62% over the five year period,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “The Census of Agriculture is all encompassing, and it allows us to compare ourselves to fellow states, whether that is in ranking of commodities, prices, demographics and more.”

The Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Even small plots of land – whether rural or urban – growing fruit, vegetables or some food animals count if $1,000 or more of such products were raised and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the Census year. The Census of Agriculture, taken only once every five years, looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures.

“We are thankful for all the farmers who completed the survey, this data allows our department to provide accurate and reliable information and data to Hoosiers, to farmers and to decision makers,” said Don Lamb, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “The data comes out every five years and its always exciting to see our statewide growth.”

Data from the census shapes programs and initiatives that benefit Indiana farmers, expands access to resources that help farmers and help farmers diversify into new markets, including local and regional food systems, specialty crops and organic production.

Listed below are some highlights from the 2022 Census of Agriculture for Indiana.

  • Indiana has 94,282 farmers (30,691 female and 63,321 male)

  • New and Beginning farmers (those with less than 10 years experience) total 26,428 with the average age as 43.2 years old
  • Producers with military service totals 6,621

 MAN FOUND GUILTY BY JURY OF CHILD MOLESTATION

Evansville, IN – Prosecutor Diana Moers announces that on February 13, 2024, after a two-day jury trial, Timothy W. Vaughn was found guilty of Child Molesting, a Level 1 Felony, and Incest, a Level 4 Felony. The Honorable Magistrate Judge Kelli E. Fink of the Vanderburgh County Circuit Court presided. 

In May of 2023, Holly’s House conducted a forensic interview with a child who stated Timothy W. Vaughn had molested them several years back. The Evansville Police Department was able to verify the dates, location, and descriptions the victim gave ultimately leading to charging Timothy W. Vaughn with the crime. 

Deputy Prosecutor Amanda Honaker worked alongside the victim and their family diligently to ensure a successful trial. After over 3 hours of deliberation, the jury came back with a guilty verdict. 

“This brave survivor came forward to tell their story and now Vanderburgh County has one more dangerous man out of our community. These are difficult cases as the perpetrator can carefully choose the place and time of the molestation, attempting to hide behind closed doors with only the young, traumatized survivor as a witness. Even so, my office will make sure these survivors’ voices are heard,” stated Prosecutor Moers. “My office provides support in every step of the judicial process from providing information to victims about service providers and resources, to explanation of the litigation steps. We are here to fight for survivors and their families as a team.” 

Prosecutor Moers thanked EPD Detective Cameron Werne and other officers who assisted in this case. She also thanked Deputy Prosecutors Amanda Honaker and Susan Wilkie, Victim Advocate Teresa Wilcox, and investigatory staff Jessica Pollock and Morgan Richardville. All parties worked rigorously to bring justice for the victim. 

Sentencing is scheduled for March 8, 2024, in front of Magistrate Judge Kelli E. Fink of the Vanderburgh County Circuit Court. The Defendant could face up to 20–40 years for the Child Molesting and 2–12 years for the Incest.

Major Renovation to Upgrade UE Athletics and Intramural Fields

$1.2 million project to renovate turf and bolster campus recreation

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With a primary goal of positively impacting every member of the University of Evansville community, UE today announced a $1.2 million field renovation project that will elevate the overall collective experience for students, faculty, and staff.

In a partnership between campus and UE athletics, the current intramural fields area located on the northwest tip of campus along the Lloyd Expressway will undergo a major renovation, highlighted by a full turf field.  The field will provide opportunities to the entire UE campus community including a year-round outdoor turf facility for intramurals and the Purple Aces soccer programs, along with an open campus area for students to enjoy recreational activities.

The UE campus has been a vibrant place with multiple completed and ongoing projects lifting its profile and this will be the latest addition.

“This project reflects the University of Evansville’s commitment to our students’ wellness through physical activity including intramural sports and outdoor recreational opportunities,” said Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students Dr. Rachel S. Carpenter.  “This project will give our student body as well as our student-athletes the flexibility of utilizing this outdoor space on a year-round basis.”

Funding for the project was completely covered through the sale of UE’s old Division Street property to Wesselman Woods in June 2023. The UE soccer programs previously practiced on the property that was sold and this renovation will help to provide practice opportunities year-round.

“We are excited to unveil this project, which was an excellent collaboration between our campus and athletics. Our goal was to bring about a positive impact to the entire community and we are confident that will be accomplished with this initiative,” said UE Athletics Director Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried.  “Following the land sale to Wesselman Woods, it was critical to find our soccer programs with an area to replace what was lost and also enhance the overall experience.  Knowing our entire student body can utilize the space at any time of year and any type of weather makes this accomplishment even more meaningful.”

Project construction is set to begin in the coming weeks and be completed in its entirety by the Fall of 2024.

UE Golf to hold “The Hamilton” Fundraiser

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On Sunday, March 24, the University of Evansville men’s and women’s golf programs will hold their third fundraiser – The Hamilton.  Henderson Country Club will be the host course.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. CT on the 24th with play beginning at 1 p.m. CT.  The format is a 4-person scramble.  Multiple others contests will be available including closest to the pin, longest drive and more.  Mulligans and red tee coupons will be available for purchase.

Team and individual registration options are available for the event.  The cost is $500 per team and $125 per individual.  Hole sponsorships are $100 and other donations are welcome.  The registration fee includes a round of 18 holes with the opportunity to play a set amount of holes with a member of one of the Purple Aces golf squads.  It also includes golf cart, tee gift for each player and food courtesy of Azzip Pizza.

For the second year in a row, the Aces will be supporting two important causes while at home this week. Thursday night is Rising Coaches Equality Inclusion Night as the Aces will be wearing all black to support the initiative. Fans are also encouraged to wear black to Thursday evening’s game. Saturday against Missouri State is Evansville’s Play4Kay game supporting breast cancer awareness. All fans are encouraged to wear pink on Sunday in support of Play4Kay.

Southern Illinois comes into Thursday’s game starting their longest road trip of the season with four straight games away from Carbondale. The Salukis are on a five-game losing streak as SIU fell to Belmont, 65-55, on Sunday. Southern Illinois is led by Laniah Randle who is top five in the MVC in both scoring (fourth, 17.6) and rebounding (second, 8.8). Randle has had 20 or more points in 10 games this season for 76th in the NCAA in scoring.

The Lady Bears visit Meeks Fieldhouse as one of the top three teams in the Valley standings but with their first loss in two weeks. Missouri State fell to Murray State on Sunday afternoon at Great Southern Bank Arena for its first home loss since Feb. 19 2023 against Belmont. Currently, the Lady Bears are shooting lights out from behind the arc, as they currently rank 33rd nationally and first in The Valley, shooting at a .357 (120-336) clip from three-point range.

After multiple close losses over the past two weeks, the Aces picked up their first Missouri Valley Conference win on Sunday afternoon. UE was able to overpower the Valparaiso Beacon’s in the paint on the road with a 71-68 win. It was a monumental game for freshman forward Nevaeh Thomas. Thomas set multiple career highs in Valparaiso including rebounds (19), blocks (3), field goals made (10), and field goal attempts (16). Along with setting multiple career highs, Thomas led the Aces in scoring with 23 points while picking up her third double-double of the season and second of the weekend. Thomas was also named the MVC Freshman of the Week for her play against UIC and Valpo.

Junior guard Lexie Sinclair contributed on multiple big plays in the game on Sunday at Valparaiso. In the final 15 seconds of a tight game, Sinclair saved a ball on the baseline to assist on a basket by Thomas and then stole the ball back from the Beacons only two seconds later to give UE one of the final possessions of the game. Sinclair drew a foul on the steal, making one of two free throws to seal the three-point win.
