No. 8 Blazers use big second half to pick up Region 24 win over Lincoln Trail

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Trailblazers slid five spots in this week’s NJCAA Division I National Rankings after falling at Olney Central Saturday night to No. 8 this week.

The Trailblazers got their first opportunity to bounce back and hopefully resume their climb up the polls Wednesday night against Region 24 rival Lincoln Trail College from Robinson, Ill.

After a slow start the Blazers rode a big 54-point second half to pull away late to claim the 88-55 victory over the Statesmen.

VU looked to be on the right track heading towards a bounce back victory early on Wednesday night, before Lincoln Trail came out with a 12-2 scoring run to take a 17-10 lead midway through the opening half of play.

The Statesmen lead held at 19-12 before VU battled back with an 11-2 scoring run of their own to take a 23-21 lead, a lead they would not surrender for the rest of the night.

VU closed out the opening half of play strong with another 11-2 scoring run to take a 34-25 lead into the locker room break.

The Vincennes lead only continued to grow in the second half, using a 12-2 scoring run to take a 59-34 lead midway through the second half.

The Blazers would look to put the game away late with a 9-0 scoring run to take a 76-45 lead and ended the game by scoring the final six points to close out a strong 88-55 victory over the Statesmen.

“We picked up the intensity with about 11 or 12 minutes to go in the first half,” VU Hall of Fame Head Coach Todd Franklin said. “Defensively we picked it up. We sent Ryan into the game. Ryan hit a couple of shots on the inside-out because we could get them any time we wanted because they were really collapsing on us. He hit a couple and really got us going on the offensive end. Then we picked up the intensity defensively and really, they didn’t score very many points from that point on.”

“It still took us a little while to get a rhythm,” Franklin added. “In the second half I thought we played with more of a balance and a rhythm and you look at the stats sheet and it reflected it. But one thing throughout the game, even when we were missing shots, we only ended up with four turnovers. I thought we threw up some bad shots, one-legged and stuck the ball in so they could block our shot. I don’t know why we like doing that, but we seem to enjoy it. But we didn’t turn it over and it’s amazing when you don’t turn it over and we’re pretty good at getting on the offensive glass, we end up with 23 of those. If we don’t turn it over and we actually move the ball and then we get up a shot, we’ve got a really good chance of getting up another one.”

“I know those are simple things but they are important things,” Franklin said. “Four turnovers gave us a chance when we were sputtering a little bit. Our offensive rebounding gave us a chance when we were sputtering a little bit. Then as the game wore on, we started to get a more solid base on our shots and got settled in. Hopefully we can grow from that and keep doing it.”

The Trailblazers were led offensively by sophomore Kris King who found his shooting stroke early, connecting on a pair of first half threes and recording 12 of his game-high 19 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Lady Trailblazers winning streak continues with big Region 24 win over Lincoln Trail

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers increased their winning streak to eight Wednesday night at the Physical Education Complex, going nearly wire-to-wire over the Lady Statesmen of Lincoln Trail College to win 100-68.

After the Lady Statesmen scored the first basket of the game, the Lady Trailblazers answered back with a three-pointer on the other end to take a 3-2 lead.

Vincennes would go on to hold this lead throughout the remainder of the game as the Blazers quickly jumped ahead with an 18-2 scoring run to lead 18-4 and hold a double-digit lead at 25-15 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Lincoln Trail cut the deficit down to seven early in the second quarter with a 6-0 scoring run, which the Lady Blazers responded back with six unanswered of their own.

After a late string of baskets by Lincoln Trail late in the second quarter, the Blazers were still able to hold on to a 45-32 lead at the halftime break.

The two teams traded baskets for most of the third quarter, with VU holding a 60-50 advantage before closing out the quarter on a 10-4 scoring run to lead 70-54 heading into the final period.

VU looked to all but seal the game away in the fourth quarter and did so with a monster 18-0 scoring run to grow the lead to 94-58.

Lincoln Trail was unable to put together a big scoring run to answer back and the Lady Trailblazers cruised late to a big 100-68 victory over the Lady Statesmen.

Vincennes was led offensively Wednesday night by freshman Destinee Hooks (Indianapolis, Ind.) who led the way with 18 points and six assists.

Sophomore Brie Miller (Bainbridge, Ind.) had a big game off the bench for the Blazers, recording her third double-double of the season and fourth in her VU career with 14 points and a team-high 15 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds.

Sophomore Johnai Wimbleduff (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the second of three VU double figure scorers off the bench, ending with 12 points and four rebounds.

Freshman Taylor Guess (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the third, finishing her night with 10 points and three rebounds.

Sophomore Katrina Litte (Valmiera, Latvia) and freshman Karina Scott (Noblesville, Ind.) were the final VU scorers in double figures, each recording 11 points and each connecting on three three-point shots.

Litte added four assists and three rebounds, while Scott filled up the stats sheet with a team-high seven assists and six rebounds.

The Lady Blazers as a team connected on 14 three-point shots on the night and really shared the ball well, assisting on 33 of their 39 field goal makes.

Help raise awareness of SNAP fraud

Skimming of Electronic Benefit Transfer and Hoosier Works Benefit cards is on the rise and the Family and Social Services Administration would like your assistance to help protect SNAP benefits and combat SNAP fraud by card skimming, card cloning and other similar methods, which can include text messages. The FSSA Division of Family Resources will not send a text message stating that a benefits card has been locked and asking the recipient to call a number.

Fraud will not be tolerated as SNAP benefit theft victimizes Hoosiers who rely on these benefits to feed their families.

We are asking our partners to please to share the outreach materials information below on your social media channels to help raise awareness of SNAP fraud by card skimming, card cloning and other similar methods.

BRAUN/SINEMA INTRODUCE HIRE VETERANS ACT

Senator Braun & Senator Sinema are introducing a bill to help hire more veterans in federal land management

WASHINGTON — Today, Senators Mike Braun and Kyrsten Sinema introduced the Hire Veterans Act which would create a five-year pilot program to strengthen the pipeline for veterans seeking skilled labor opportunities within federal land management agencies. Over the course of the past decade, federal agencies have routinely suffered from staffing shortages.

Notably, in April 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had 5,300 fewer employees than it did in January 2017. Additionally, in 2021 the Department of the Interior (DOI) cited approximately 5,000 firefighter openings nationwide.

“As Hoosier veterans transition to civilian employment we must ensure that we have programs in place to help these veterans get hired. The Hire Veterans Act creates a pilot program to ease this transition by matching qualified veterans with open career opportunities in federal land management agencies.” — Sen. Braun

“After years of service and sacrifice, Arizona veterans deserve access to strong careers where they can continue building the future they want for themselves and their families.” — Sen. Sinema

“On behalf of our 1.6 million dues-paying members, The American Legion is proud to support the Hire Veterans Act. By encouraging hiring practices that provide employment opportunities for veterans in critical land management roles, Hire Veterans Act will ensure more of our nation’s veterans are able to build fulfilling careers following their service to our nation.” — Chairman John Bowen Sr., American Legion’s Veterans’ Employment and Education Commission

“Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has always recognized the inherent value of including the military community in the management of our public lands and water. These men and women possess evident personal values and a strength of character that led them to place the needs of their country higher than their instinct for self-preservation. Not only will this pilot program find acceptable candidates across the military community for these roles but it will identify multiple exceptional candidates who will lead the conservation conversation on public lands for decades to come. Thank you, Senators Braun, and Sinema, for putting pen to paper in support of this legislation that will help recognize the tremendous asset our military community members can be to our public lands and waters.” – Trevor Hubbs, Armed Forces Initiative Coordinator, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers
