Alyssa Richards promoted to Associate Head Softball Coach

 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville head softball coach Bailey Dillender has announced the promotion of Alyssa Richards to Associate Head Coach for the Purple Aces squad. Richards has worked with Dillender since 2017.

“Rich has been a part of our success since 2017, and was pivotal in our run at Cumberlands over the last 3 years,” Dillender exclaimed. “I’m so thrilled that all parties agreed to her promotion as it is something I’ve been trying to accomplish for Rich for several years now. Can’t imagine doing this thing without her. Nobody is more deserving.”

Richards is in charge of the pitching staff and catchers for the UE squad while assisting with the hitters. She will also be working with game analysis/breakdown.

In her time with Dillender at University of the Cumberlands, Richards directed one of the top pitching staffs in the nation. Over the last three seasons, her staffs have ranked in the top 21 nationally at the NAIA level. In 2024-25, the Patriots ranked in the top 13 in ERA, WHIP, and opponent batting average.

The 2022-23 campaign saw the Patriots finish 8th in the NAIA with a team ERA of 1.80.

USI sweeps OVC Runner of the Week honors

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country swept the Ohio Valley Conference Runner of the Week honors following the Screaming Eagles’ efforts at the Southern Showcase this past Friday in Huntsville, Alabama.

Junior Alex Nolan was named the OVC Male Runner of the Week, while sophomore Hadessah Austin was named the OVC Female Runner of the Week in an announcement by the league office Wednesday morning.

This marks the second time this season that Nolan and Austin have earned OVC Runner of the Week honors.

Nolan finished 20th out of 460 runners to lead the Screaming Eagles’ men to an 11th-place finish in the 48-team Southern Showcase field. He finished the eight-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 6.3 seconds, a time that tied his brother and USI Assistant Coach Austin Nolan for sixth all-time at USI.

Austin raced to a 26th-place finish out of 481 runners to lead the Screaming Eagles’ women to a 25th-place finish in the 52-team field at the Southern Showcase. Austin finished the 5k course in 17 minutes, 18.6 seconds, a time that ranks third all-time at USI on the grass.

The Screaming Eagles return to action Friday when they send a small group of runners to compete at the SIU Oscar Moore Invitational in Carbondale, Illinois. The women’s 6k is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time, while the men’s 8k is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

UPDATE:charging Jamerus Parkman with the murder

An affidavit has been submitted charging Jamerus Parkman with the murder of Susan Haynie. The  affidavit was submitted after preliminary results from physical evidence was able to link Parkman to the murder. Parkman was previously named a person of interest in this case.

Death Investigation Now Being Investigated As A Homicide

The EPD Adult Investigation Unit is investigating this case as a homicide. A person of interest has been identified and arrested on a unrelated charges. This investigation is ongoing at this time.

Investigation Underway Following Medical Emergency Run

On August 27, at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 3300 block of E. Gum Avenue following a report of a medical emergency. Upon arrival, it was determined that the female victim  was beyond life-saving efforts and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is currently being treated as a death investigation. The identity of the victim will be released by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office. As the investigation is still in its early stages, limited information is available at this time. However, anyone who may have information related to this case is encouraged to contact the EPD Adult Investigative Unit at (812) 436-797

THUNDERBOLTS SIGN FORWARD EVAN BENWELL

Evansville, In.:  The Evansville Thunderbolts and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Bes are pleased to announce the signing of forward Evan Benwell for the 2025-26 season.  The Thunderbolts will raise their President’s Cup Championship banner prior to their 2025-26 home opener at Ford Center on Saturday, October 25th against the Quad City Storm.
                Benwell joins the Thunderbolts following four seasons of Canadian college hockey at Wilfrid Laurier University between 2021-2025, where he scored 13 goals and 40 points in 91 regular season games.  Prior to college, Benwell played junior hockey in the OJHL for two seasons, first with his hometown Toronto Patriots, before joining the Burlington Cougars early in the 2018-19 season, where he played almost a full season alongside Thunderbolts captain Matthew Hobbs.  In two seasons of OJHL play, Benwell scored 32 goals and 74 points in 101 regular season games, including 17 goals and 35 points in 37 games playing with Hobbs at Burlington.  In 2019-20, Benwell played in Western Canada, starting with brief stints with the SJHL’s Notre Dame Hounds and the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers, before playing the majority of the season with the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, scoring 9 goals and 18 points in 28 games before the season ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Benwell finished his junior career in the Canadian Maritimes with the Fredericton Red Wings of the MJAHL in 2020-21, scoring 9 goals and 17 points in 16 regular season games and adding a goal and 8 points in 6 playoff games before enrolling at Wilfrid Laurier University.
                “I’d describe myself as an offensive playmaker who has a knack around the net, I like to think I’m someone who tries to make their teammates better by setting them up for scoring chances,” commented Benwell when describing his playing style.  Reuniting with Hobbs was a big factor in joining Evansville, as Benwell went on to say:  “We had a great relationship and kept in touch over the years, he mentioned how much fun he’s had in Evansville and how kind and generous the people are.  I found Evansville to be a very attractive program, especially after their championship run last year.  Speaking with Coach Bes, I became really excited about the professional environment and the winning culture it fosters with this group.  No matter where you go, everyone wants to win and it sounds like there’s a recipe in this organization that leads to success, and I’m incredibly excited to put my best foot forward and be a part of it!”  In closing, Benwell expressed excitement of the highest order, saying: “ I’d say I’m at a 10 out of 10 level of excitement!  It’s always a privilege to be able to do what you love, which for me is playing hockey.  I couldn’t be more excited to get down to Evansville in October and get to work!”
                On the addition of Benwell, Head Coach Jeff Bes commented: “Evan is an offensive forward that has produced at every level he has played at. He has a high hockey IQ and is very creative with the puck, which generates scoring opportunities for himself as well as his teammates.”

Volleyball faces USI in home-and-home

Opener set for Thursday at UE

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In its final pair of non-conference matches, the University of Evansville volleyball team faces USI in a home-and-home series this weekend. On Thursday the Purple Aces welcome the Screaming Eagles to Meeks Family Fieldhouse for a 6 p.m. contest before the rematch takes place on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Liberty Arena.

Recapping the Weekend

– Last weekend, Evansville hosted its home tournament going 1-2 with a victory against Western Illinois

– UE dropped a 5-set match to UAB in the tournament opener before falling by a 3-0 final in the final to Morehead State

– Sabrina Ripple was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 1.85 kills and 0.92 blocks per set

Reaching a Milestone

– With 17 digs against UAB, Ainoah Cruz passed 1,000 for her career

– Her top effort of the weekend was a 27-dig performance in the win over Western Illinois where she added nine assists

– Cruz remains third in the MVC with her season average of 4.86 per set

– She was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8 after averaging 4.59 digs per set

– At the GSU Invitational, Cruz finished the weekend with an average of 5.38 digs

All-Tournament Accolade

– Sabrina Ripple averaged 1.85 kills and 0.92 blocks on her way to All-Tournament honors at UE’s home tournament

– Ripple had the top offensive showing of her career, totaling 13 kills in the win over WIU

– Highlighted by seven total blocks against PFW and WIU, Ripple is 8th in the league with her average of 1.05 blocks per set

– She has multiple blocks in each of her matches this season

– Her .287 hitting tally is 14th in the MVC

Scouting the Opposition

– USI comes into the weekend with a 2-8 record with victories over Northern Kentucky and Miami Ohio

– They were victorious in both meetings last season

Eagles stifled by Bruins in homestand finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind.– University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer closed out its five-game homestand with a 3-0 loss to Belmont University Wednesday evening at Strassweg Field.
 
The Screaming Eagles conclude the homestand with a 1-4 record, with a 1-0 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on August 26. USI scored three goals in the five games, one against Rose-Hulman and two in a loss to Indiana University Indianapolis on September 6.
 
The Bruins’ potent offense was on display early, possessing the ball for the majority of the first half. USI held them off the board until the 30th minute, when they snuck a ball past junior goalkeeper Kael McGowan.
 
At the half, USI trailed only 1-0 despite the relentless Belmont pressure. The Eagles trailed in total shots, 11-4, and shots on goal, 4-1. Sophomore forward David Davila put up a team-high two shots in the first half, while freshman midfielder Nolan Stevens recorded the team’s only shot on goal. In his first start as an Eagle, McGowan tallied three saves through the first 45.
 
Belmont came out of the break firing, scoring two goals at the 59:42 and 63:49 marks of the match. The Bruins continued to dominate the possession battle, allowing the Eagles only two second-half shots, neither on goal.
 
For the game, the Eagles were outshot 18-6 from the field and 8-1 on goal. Davila led the Eagles with two shots, while Stevens recorded the only shot on goal. McGowan recorded three saves over his 68 minutes, getting replaced by freshman goalkeeper Jacob English, who held the Bruins scoreless over his 22 minutes with two saves.
 
The Eagles hit the road for the first time since the season-opener, traveling north for a matchup with former Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Purdue Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 23. Then, on September 27, USI travels to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Ohio Valley Conference opener with Liberty University.
