IS IT TRUE that last night saw a well attended union rally in Warrick County out across from the Alcoa complex?…that while there were plenty of people from Vanderburgh County and Evansville who attended the rally, there were no Democrat members of the Evansville City Council or Chairman Mark Owen of the Vanderburgh County Democrat Party in attendance?…that as Vanderburgh County and Evansville represent the place of residence for many of the Alcoa workers it is surprising that none of their elected officials or party membership found time to attend this rally?

IS IT TRUE it is about time that the Evansville Housing Authority makes a decision concerning developing the vacant Erie property located on Governor and Lincoln in the core of Evansvilleâ€™s Center City?…that this development should be the first “Front Door” project under the new Mayor?…that building many affordable quality single family homes in the $70,000 to the $80,000 range on this approx. 7 acres would be a masterful “Good Public Policy” move?…that we also suggest that the powers that be seek the wisdom and advice of the Rev. Adrian Brooks whom has developed numerous successful housing projects in the Center City?

IS IT TRUE that we are hearing the former City of Evansville Chief of Staff of the Office of the Mayor is now in the employment the new city Administration?…that we hear that Rose Young has already has been extremely helpful to Mayor Winnecke and his staff?…that we feel that Rose Young needs to do her work without being under the radar but openly conduct her business for good of the people she serves?… that Mrs. Young did an outstanding job serving her old boss but we know she shall do similar under her new one?…the CCO staff and supporters are glad that Rose Young has decided to stay in the City of Evansville employment?

IS IT TRUE that the Alabama Crimson Tide put on a magnificent clinic of how to play college football in defeating the LSU Tigers 21 â€“ 0?…that Alabama had only one penalty in the entire game and that came with less than 5 minutes to go?…that for those readers who do not know, the Alabama fans have a taunting chant at the end of every victory that gets them into trouble on occasion for being unsportsmanlike?…that last night they Alabama victory chant was yelled out four times?…that the chant goes something like this, â€œHey Tigers!, Hey Tigers!, We just beat the hell out of you, rammer jammer yellow hammer give em hell Alabamaâ€?…that here is a sample of that taunt at the Texas Longhorns in 2010?

IS IT TRUE that it would truly be a pleasure if the City of Evansville had a Division I NCAA football team for locals to enjoy?…that the closest team to Evansville continues to be the University of Louisville Cardinals whose freshman quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was just named to the top 10 watch list for the 2012 Heisman Trophy by CBS Sports?…that such things seldom come along but that this is the third time in 7 years that a UL quarterback has made that list but the first time ever for a freshman quarterback from any school?…that there was a time in the 1940â€™s when the UE Football Aces defeated the UL Cardinals?…that we wonder what could have been if the effort would have been made to keep college football in Evansville?

IS IT TRUE that for the first time in history it is now reported that the debt of the United States of America is now equal to the size of the entire American economy?…that this is all goods and services produced in the United States in a single year which is a heck of a lot more money than just the government revenue collected in taxes and fees?…that this amount is from a laymanâ€™s perspective the equivalent of having 5 years of your salary on credit cards?…that the actual number reported today is $15.23 Trillion dollars or just over $50,000 for every man, woman, and child in the country?…that if you are a family of 4 that your share of this growing burden is $200,000 but is projected to increase to about $220,000 during 2012?…that this is just the federal government and does not include any state or local government debts?

IS IT TRUE that there is a lady and her husband who were hanging out at the Hogâ€™s Breath bar in La Quinta, California that happens to be owned by Clint Eastwood who is in the business of placing conventions in cities across America?…that this writer overheard a conversation they were having about a bad experience that they had in a city that had no smoking ordinance with a convention they had placed there?…that (listen up Evansville) this company lost a major account over the experience of the convention attendees hating being in a town without a smoking ban AND VOWED TO NEVER EVER BOOK A CONVENTION IN ANY CITY THAT ALLOWS PUBLIC SMOKING AGAIN?…that the lady and her husband to avoid a repeat performance with this costly situation have enacted a company policy to NEVER BOOK ANY CONVENTION IN A CITY THAT DOES NOT HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE SMOKING BAN?…that the leadership of Evansville would be well advised to consider the preferences and requirements of convention attendees when this issue comes before the City Council this year and the State of Indiana should too?

IS IT TRUE that the same state government that is gung ho to pass Right to Work legislation for the purpose of having a voice at the table in more attraction projects may be neglecting the passing of a tough anti-smoking law on a statewide basis that could have a similar impact on jobs if conventions pass us by for our rather archaic smoking laws?…that the lady and her husband did not have an answer for a comprehensive ban that only excludes casino boats?

IS IT TRUE that it has been reported that the recent and anticipated future increases in the electricity rates charged are threatening the future of aluminum smelters across the US?…that there are two such plants that employ many thousands of people right here in the tri-state?…that in particular the Alcan plant has stated that the Big Rivers rates are increasing to a level that is higher than the world average rate and that they may not be able to operated at a profit due to the increases?…that is corporate code for â€œshut downâ€ or â€œbig lay offâ€?…that we do not know what the exact rate is at Big Rivers but what we do know is that from a residential perspective that customers of Big Rivers are paying much less that customers of Vectren?

IS IT TRUE that making entire industries non-competitive may just be yet another unintended consequence of a federal administration that has gotten us into the $15.2 Trillion dollar debt with little to show for it AND now is learning that the statement by President Obama about â€œelectricity rates will skyrocketâ€ is not only coming true but people will be losing their livelihoods because of it?…that we will not survive as an economy if all we do is service each other as opposed to creating and making things?

Indiana State Representatives Gail Riecken (D) and Kreg Battles (D) hosted a field hearing Sunday afternoon to provide local laborers an opportunity to vocalize their objections to the controversial Right-to-Work legislation currently being proposed by Indiana Republicans. The crowd of over 400 people spilled into the hallways of the C.K. Newsome Center after the gym reached its capacity. County Commissioner Steve Melcher and City Council members Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley and Missy Mosby were in attendance.

Representative Battles stated that he has never seen a bill trying to be pushed through so quickly. He claimed that the Republican time-line for this bill had it being proposed this past Wednesday, approved by both houses and signed into law by Monday, January 9th. This unprecedented expedition is what prompted state Democrats to skip the legislative session in Indianapolis this week. The Indiana House of Representatives is comprised of 60 Republicans and 40 Democrats. The Republican majority has enough votes to pass the bill but a quorum of 67 legislators is required to conduct any official business. According to Battles, by staying out of session the Democrats have bought time for their constituents to be heard.

In a press conference at the Vanderburgh County Republican Party Headquarters on Sunday, Chairman Wayne Parke shared his contempt for the state Democrats recent actions. â€œIt is very disturbing that Democrat State Representatives Gail Riecken and Kreg Battles have decided to take their first paychecks, but refuse to show up for work so the House Chamber can start its official businessâ€, says Parke. â€œIt would appear they are not only against the Right-to-Work bill, but against working period.â€

Parke claims that the bill would only affect approximately 10% of Indiana workers. He says it will not cost Indiana jobs, but will actually bring jobs to Indiana. He also says the bill will have no negative impact on workersâ€™ safety nor will it reduce hourly pay. The three-page bill, according to Parke, simply forbids unions to force workers to pay union dues.

Democrats are most concerned about the repercussions of the Right-to-Work legislation. Speakers at Sundayâ€™s hearing called the bill nothing more than an attempt to break up unions. Unions are already legally bound to represent any worker in a unionized workplace, regardless of whether that worker pays dues or not. Democrats say that because the proposed legislation allows employees to opt out of paying dues it ultimately weakens the power of the union. Workers that are not required to pay into the system will continue to reap the benefits of the system. Less income from union dues means fewer funds available for the legal services that assist them with contract negotiations and other employee protection measures.

Democrats say that union workers are not the only ones who should be concerned about Right-to-Work legislation. They say unions set the market standard for wages and safety conditions. For example, the Gibson County Toyota plant is not unionized. Most employees will tell you that they are paid well, treated well and provided great benefits. Republicans use this as an example of what companies are capable of when they are not forced to compromise with union negotiators. Democrats, however, claim that companies like Toyota treat their employees so well because unions have made that type of compensation a standard of the industry.

UE’s Phil Plisky a Featured Presenter at Major League Soccer Medical Symposium

Phil Plisky, assistant professor of physical therapy at the University of Evansville, will be a featured presenter at the Major League Soccer Medical Symposium, a professional educational event focused on treatment and prevention of soccer-related injuries.

The symposium, sponsored by the Hospital for Special Surgery Office of Continuing Medical Education and Major League Soccer, will take place Saturday, January 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In his presentation, titled â€œScreening Athletes for Injury Potential: Identifying the At-Risk Player,â€ Plisky will speak to some of the nationâ€™s leading sports medicine professionals â€” including the medical personnel of Major League Soccer teams â€” about injury prevention research and practical implementation of injury prevention strategies.

â€œEach year we make progress in how sports injuries are treated in professional athletes,â€ said Riley J. Williams, III, M.D., symposium director and orthopedic surgeon in the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. â€œThese presentations are designed to further educate team physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists who work with high school, collegiate, and professional soccer players on prevention, but also on how to help them heal these injuries most effectively when they do occur.â€

Plisky is the developer of the Y Balance Test, a research-based screening tool that analyzes a personâ€™s movement patterns to detect his or her risk of injury. Professional sports teams such as the Columbus Crew, Indianapolis Colts, and Atlanta Falcons have utilized the test, as have numerous collegiate athletic programs and the U.S. military.

In 2010, Plisky â€” along with associate professor of physical therapy Kyle Kiesel and researchers at U.S. Army-Baylor University â€” received two research grants worth over $1.5 million to screen Army soldiers for their injury risk, then offer education and exercises to reduce that risk.

Plisky received his Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Evansville and his Doctor of Science degree in orthopedic physical therapy from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. He is a board certified clinical specialist in orthopedics through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Plisky is also a certified athletic trainer and certified strength and conditioning specialist.

In addition to serving as a member of UEâ€™s physical therapy faculty, Plisky is actively engaged in patient care at ProRehab, PC in Evansville and is the residency program director for the ProRehab and University of Evansville Sports Residency Program.
