Annual Bicycle Tour Honors Fallen Officers, Supports Survivors

0

by Tim O’Brien

Cops Cycling for Survivors will conduct its 24th annual bicycle tour around Indiana in July to honor fallen law enforcement officers and their survivors.
Starting as a ride to Washington, D.C., in 2002, Cops Cycling for Survivors now honors the more than 450 Hoosier officers recognized as line-of-duty deaths by memorializing each during the 13-day, 1,000-mile tour. The nonprofit organization’s goals are to ensure these heroes are never forgotten and provide support to their loved ones.

The ride will start July 7 at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield and travel around the state before concluding July 19 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. The full list of dates and routes is available here.

Each year, Cops Cycling for Survivors honors officers recently killed in the line of duty. This year’s ride honors these Hoosier officers recognized as line-of-duty deaths in 2024:

Dep. Sheriff Fred Fislar, Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, End of Watch April 16, 2024.
Cpl. Brandon Schreiber, Newton County Sheriff’s Office, End of Watch Sept. 11, 2024.
Correctional Lt. Donald Neiswinger, Jr, Indiana Department of Correction, End of Watch Jan. 18, 2022.
Correctional Officer Shawn Burnell, Indiana Department of Correction, End of Watch Oct. 18, 2020.

In addition to memorializing fallen officers, Cops Cycling for Survivors raises funds for their surviving loved ones, as well as for scholarships, camps and other avenues of support. Click here to sponsor a 2025 rider or make a financial donation.

Hoosiers can register here to participate in all or part of the ride. For more information on the 2025 Cops Cycling for Survivors ride, visit the organization’s website at CopsCycling4Survivors.org, email CopsCyclingForSurvivors@gmail.com or call 812-727-0725.

Otters, ThunderBolts middle game suspended during doubleheader

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters (12-17) fell to the Windy City ThunderBolts (8-23) in game one of their three game series. The game was supposed to be the first of two games but game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the third inning due to rainfall, coming a day after the opener was rained out.

Evansville sent out Parker Brahms for his fifth start of his season as he worked a clean first two innings. JT Benson got the scoring started with a solo shot in the bottom of the second to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.

The ThunderBolts responded with two home runs in the top of the third to give them a 3-1 lead. After surrendering the lead, Evansville struggled to generate much as Windy City’s starter pitched the whole seven innings, only allowing one hit and one walk in the final five innings.

Windy City capitalized with timely hitting and used a couple Evansville defensive mistakes to tack on four more runs in the final three innings to win 7-1. Jack Washburn came on to finish the sixth with two strikeouts and worked the seventh, allowing an unearned run.

Even though the Otters only managed four hits, Logan Brown had two base hits in game one.

Game two saw Anthony Patterson III make his professional debut on the mound for Evansville and he shined through his three innings pitched. The 24-year-old finished his collegiate career with the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies with a 2.52 ERA in 75 innings.

Patterson III displayed his fantastic stuff with his lower 90s fastball and tight breaker while having fantastic control. He finished with three hits, one walk and two strikeouts and didn’t allow a run.

The Evansville offense threatened a couple of times. In the second, they got runners on second and third with one out after a L. Brown double, but failed to score a run.

During the third, the Otters then put runners on first and second with LJ Jones due up before the game was paused due to rain.

The second game will be picked up in the bottom of the third with Alain Camou on second and JT Benson on first with Jones at the plate. The game will resume at 3:00 CT and be followed by another seven inning game about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first to complete the three-game series. The Otters are celebrating Father’s Day and a Dog Days of Summer at Bosse Field, with TaylorMade sponsoring a golf ball giveaway.

The word in 120, God and Fathers, by Jerome Stewart

God and Fathers

by Jerome Stewart

There is a quote by Zac Brown which says; “I don’t want to look back and say, ‘Yeah, I was really successful, but I failed at fatherhood because I was not there.”

Today as we celebrate a day set aside to honor fathers, there is much to think about. For any father in need of direction when raising a child, the best advice you can receive is in understanding, not to leave God out of your plans! Isaiah chapter 54 vs. 13 says; “All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.” And who else will experience a sense of peace? The answer is the parent. It’s a win-win situation. Solomon was a man of wisdom. In Proverbs chapter 1 vs. 8 he says; “My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother.”  Vs. 10 says, “My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.” Proverbs chapter 4 vss. 3 thru 5 says; “When I was my father’s son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother; He also taught me and said to me: Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.” The National Fatherhood Initiative says there is a “father absence crisis in America. Youth are more at risk of first substance use without a highly involved father.”  Proverbs chapter 20 vs. 7 says; “The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.” Joshua says chapter 24 vs. 15; “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” The wisdom necessary to be strong fathers raising children can be found in the word of God.  Strongly consider the meaning of the words in Matthew chapter 19 vss. 13 and 14. The bible says; Then the little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for such is the kingdom of heaven.”  Which begs the question for any father. Do you know Jesus? If not you need to, so that you can share the good news about Jesus with your children. Be an apologetic man of God! Do not leave out Jesus! He is our only hope. To you fathers, who are doing the best that you can in raising your children; “Happy Father’s Day!”
