Let Demand Push Hotel Development.

2

Dear City County Observer

(The reader sent the CCO a copy of his letter to the Editor of the Courier)

From your op ed, on August 8, 2010 you said “It’s too bad Browning Investments was unable to line up financing to transform the old Executive Inn into a smaller, higher-quality hotel in Downtown Evansville.”

“Too bad”… seriously?

From your paper on February 3, 2009, Dan Shaw wrote “In May, Browning Investments, an Indianapolis Company, said it wanted to build a four-star hotel near the new arena. James Browning, Browning vice president of development, said the company is still trying to find a site for a hotel. They hope to select one within the next a couple of months, he said.

‘We want to support the arena and the convention center,’ Browning said.

Browning Investments had looked at the Executive Inn and decided the hotel was too outdated to serve its purposes.

‘We don’t think it’s possible to renovate it to be a convention-center hotel in the traditional sense,’ Browning said.”

Can Evansville residents comment that it is “too bad” that somehow the Courier bought hook line and sinker into the idea that Browning would and could make the Executive Inn a 4 star hotel, despite the fact that they
explicitly told the Courier that they didn’t think it possible in Feb 2009? (pre-demolition!)

Can Evansville residents comment that is is “too bad” the Courier continues on a story line, now, treating the high costs Browning ran into as brand new news – ignoring how Dan Shaw reported it as a given in 2009?

Yes, the owners had defaulted and the bank had taken ownership… Hasn’t the Big E had numerous owners over the years, and wasn’t it still operational at the time?

You said, “The arena is going up so quickly because it’s financed with taxpayer-backed bonds. The hotel project is going nowhere because the private sector is not willing to take the risk.” Huh?

On July 13, 2009, Dan Shaw wrote “On Monday, Weinzapfel said Browning Investments will buy the Downtown hotel from its current owner, Mutual Hospitality Management of the Chicago area. The city will then pay Browning
for the part of the hotel which is to be demolished. That deal will carry a price of about $10 million, which also includes tax incentives local officials have offered Browning. The money will go in part to replacing the
hotel’s facade.”

Isn’t it possible that the local officials didn’t give them enough “tax incentives”? Is it possible the “incentive” carrot didn’t have an adequate stick attached? (to protect the public money) Or is it possible that those
“tax incentives” given to a private business – where said private business announced publicly “We don’t think it’s possible […]” – was irresponsible and/or a poor decision?

Granted, hindsight is 20/20, but let’s please not promote the old propaganda line that the private sector has simply failed us here… If not for the government planning, purchases and incentivized actions, it sure seems like
rational people would conclude:

1.) Minus the incentives offered, Browning would have kept with their statement in February 2009 and not even tried to turn the Big E into a 4 star hotel.

2.) Mutual Hospitality Management may still own and operate a functional hotel in that site, a hotel that was an Evansville landmark.

Now, however, it seems we have a partially demolished hotel that (all the sudden?) is too expensive to upgrade and too expensive to demolish. Not all costs can be overcome by simple “private sector” demand. But public sector incentives and/or actions spurred this all.

Trying to parse this into a great public victory and a private sector failure seems ridiculous.

Reminder: $4.25 Million in Medicare Part D Checks in the mail

1

The Department of Health and Human Services has put $4.25 million in checks in the mail to Hoosiers with disabilities and seniors. Some Medicare Part D beneficiaries will be mailed a one-time check for $250 to help close the “donut hole” in their prescription expenses. The donut hole coverage gap refers to people with prescription drug expenses between $2,830 and $4,550 a year, who receive less assistance from Medicare.

Unfortunately, some people are using this government aid as an opportunity to scam seniors and people with disabilities. These checks go out automatically, and there is no application process. If anyone calls asking for personal information to help you apply or to verify your eligibility, it’s a scam. Some scammers may try to reach you via Internet ads or even in person. Do not give out your personal information.

PRO-LIFE RALLY SCHEDULED FOR EVANSVILLE

5

Right to Life of Southwest Indiana, in conjunction with Indiana Right to Life, is pleased to partner with the Susan B. Anthony List, a national pro-life organization, in promoting the SBA List’s “Votes Have Consequences” bus tour across Indiana this week. This whistle stop will arrive in Evansville this coming Thursday, August 12th.

You Are Invited!

Thursday, August 12th – 11:45 a.m.

Location: Riverfront Park * 3rd Avenue and NW Riverside Drive * Evansville, IN 47708 * Waterfront Plaza – enter at Court Street and NW Riverside Drive

Speakers: Pro-Life congresswoman, Marilyn Musgrave * Tom Minnery, Senior Vice President, CitizenLink * Ian Hauer, Local Pro-life Activist * Mary Ellen Van Dyke, Executive Director, Right to Life of Southwest Indiana * Jim Tomes, Candidate for Indiana Senate District 49.

“‘Our Votes Have Consequences’ bus tour will ensure that voters understand exactly what their Members of Congress did to undermine their convictions and those of their pro-life constituents by voting in favor of the health care bill including taxpayer-funding of abortion. They voted for the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade states Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. According to Kellyanne Conway, CEO and President of the Polling Company, “More than three-quarters of voters across Indiana reject federal funding of abortions and that is unlikely to change between now and election day.”

Right to Life of Southwest Indiana asks our local members and like minded individuals to kindly support this rally for life event.

ANGEL MOUNDS EVENTS

Angel Mounds is proud to host Walk-N-Roll, a 2-mile walk and 5K run to raise awareness and funds for CJ’s Bus, on August 21, 2010. CJ’s Bus is a rapid-reponse mobile unit that offers nationwide assistance in the aftermath of natural disasters. It was established by co-founder Kathryn Martin in honor of her 2-year old son, CJ, and other family members who were lost in the same F3 tornado that desolated Angel Mounds in 2005. For more information or to see photos from last year’s Walk-N-Roll, visit cjsbus.org. To register as a participant, contact Mark Rumsey at (812) 305-2268 or mark@cjsbus.org The walk begins at 7:30 a.m. and the run begins at 8:30 a.m.

28th annual Native American Days
Angel Mounds’ paramount event returns September 24-26, 2010! A culmination of everything Angel Mounds has to offer, Native American Days spans space and time to present a full narrative of Native American lifeways. The event includes numerous demonstrations and hands-on activities, an Indian market, performance area, and concessions. So whether you’re into music and dancing, prehistoric tool technology, basketry and weaving, children’s games, or just love to shop and eat, this fun-filled weekend is for you. As one of the largest events focused exclusively on Native American culture in the tri-state, this is a one-of-a-kind enrichment experience you won’t want to miss! Admission is $10 per vehicle.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN INDIANA EVENTS
Judy Chicago
An Internationally Recognized Artist
Will Speak at the University of Southern Indiana
Monday, September 13th at 7:30 in Carter Hall
Judy will speak on her iconic Dinner Party installation and other works
The Dinner Party is in every survey of art textbook, nearly every contemporary art theory and criticism text, and is the touchstone for discussions in multiple disciplines. An exhibition on the Dinner Party will open at the Evansville Museum of Arts, Science and History on September 12th through November 28th. Judy is curtailing her public speaking in order to devote herself to her art. I doubt there will be many opportunities to hear her in the future and certainly not in our area. Books by and about Judy Chicago will be available for purchase and she will sign copies after her talk. I want to thank the Art Department, the University Core Curriculum, and the Evansville Museum of Arts, Science and History for joining together to bring one of America’s most preeminent artists. I encourage you to build this lecture into your syllabi and bring your students to the talk.

County Commission Candidate, Marsha Abell Sites Need for Second Industrial Park

1

On April 22, 2010, in a candidate’s forum sponsored by the United Neighborhoods of Evansville, republican county commission candidate, Marsha Abell, proposed that the Vanderburgh County Commissioners pursue the possibility of securing land to develop a second industrial park. The current Vanderburgh Industrial Park is on the far northeast side of the county near Interstate 64 and Highway 57. The current industrial park has developed into a mature park, according to Abell, and for progress to be made in Vanderburgh County land needs to be located now. An industrial park with sufficient land for the building and developing of a company is crucial to job creation and economic development in any area. Not only does an industrial park invite new and expanded businesses which provide jobs but it also creates jobs with the building of the facilities for the businesses. The creation of the current industrial park was one of the most successful ventures for economic development in Vanderburgh County and a second park will soon be needed if we are to meet the needs of future business.
