ECHO Housing Corporation announces Jacobsville Community Mobilizer

Evansville, Indiana – ECHO Housing Corporation, the convening agency for the Jacobsville Quality of Life Planning initiative, announces Jennifer Mason as the Community Mobilizer for the project. The City of Evansville granted funds for a resident-led collaborative process to develop a Quality of Life Plan with the Jacobsville neighborhood.

Mason joined ECHO in August 2012, as the Homeless Veterans Program Coordinator. Stephanie TenBarge, ECHO Housing Executive Director, said “Jennifer was a perfect fit to step into the Community Mobilizer role with her public service background and community involvement. We are excited to have her on board to lead this project for the Jacobsville neighborhood.” Mason will organize this unique initiative bringing together Jacobsville residents, leaders and stakeholders in a planning effort that will set a new vision for Jacobsville with an action plan for achievable results.

The Quality of Life Plan will be developed by utilizing principles of comprehensive community development and healthy neighborhoods, including civic, social, physical and economic factors. The aim is for people living, working and raising families in the neighborhood to take part in the development of the plan. The process takes place through three phases: organize, decide and act. Jacobsville Join In is seeking residents to participate through interviews, visioning and storytelling.

Prior to ECHO Housing, Jennifer Mason served as the Public and Government Affairs coordinator for Keep Evansville Beautiful (KEB), representing KEB by collaborating with community, government and business leaders for public initiatives. Mason is engaged in the community, serving on the Young Leaders United steering committee; volunteering for United Way; and mentoring high school students for special projects. She is a graduate from the University of Evansville and Vincennes University.

Make Donation to EVSC: Get FREE Carwash at Mike’s Jan. 18, 19

Mike’s Carwash will celebrate its Grand Opening with FREE Carwashes on January 18 -19 to benefit two Evansville organizations which support area youth.

In lieu of payment for the carwash, a $15 value, customers are encouraged to make a donation to support the EVSC Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ohio Valley.

“We firmly believe in supporting local youth, especially through education and mentoring,” said Mike’s CEO Bill Dahm. “We are very happy to partner with these two outstanding Evansville organizations and hope customers will stop by for a free wash and give generously.”

“Mike’s Carwash is providing a wonderful service to help to raise funds for EVSC Foundation, which in turn, benefits a wide variety of opportunities, programs, and projects in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation,” said Amy Romain-Barron, president of the EVSC Foundation Board.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Anna Hargis added, “Mike’s Carwash really understands the impact a mentor can have on transforming a child’s life into a success story. The company has been a wonderful partner to many Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations in our region, and we are thrilled that they’ve opened a location in Evansville.”

Local Artists’ Global Experiences Showcased in UE’s Melvin Peterson Gallery

The University of Evansville’s Department of Art is proud to present “Global Experiences,” an exhibition featuring the work of three local artists: paintings by Cedric Hustace, photographs by Jim McKinney, and ceramics by David Rodenberg.

The show, which includes 44 works inspired by the artists’ international travels, will run from January 14-February 20 in the Melvin Peterson Gallery, located on the corner of Lincoln and Weinbach avenues.

Cedric Hustace, an Evansville artist and Hawaii native, has had work displayed in numerous locations around the Tri-State (including banks, corporate offices, government buildings, and galleries) and in private collections across the United States and worldwide. He studied art at Texas Western College, the University of Miami in Florida, and in Heidelberg, Germany. Hustace, a retired attorney, received the 2002 Artist of the Year award from the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana.

Jim McKinney was born in Evansville, grew up in Newburgh, and currently resides in Princeton, New Jersey. A member of the University of Evansville’s Friends of Art and active on its board, McKinney’s interest in art began as a young boy. He pursued a career in business and captured images on his travels to South America, Mexico, South Africa, Italy, Great Britain, the Mediterranean, Turkey, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. McKinney’s work has been displayed in Willard Library and Nance Galleries in Evansville.

David Rodenberg lives in Evansville and taught art at North Posey High School for 34 years, retiring in 2011. Rodenberg’s clay sculpture and functional work have won awards in competitive shows at local and regional levels. His work can be seen in many collections including the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, the University of Indianapolis, the University of Evansville, the Evansville Courier & Press building, Evansville’s Old National Bank building, and numerous collections in the U.S. and abroad. Rodenberg’s work also has been included in international shows in New Zealand and Germany, and a traveling exhibition that toured France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The Melvin Peterson Gallery is open from noon-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. All exhibits are free, open to the public, and handicap accessible. For more information, please contact the University of Evansville Department of Art at 812-488-2043.

2011 Financial Statement for Operation of the Centre: Losses Continue to Stack Up

The financial results from the operation of The Centre showed a loss of $502,806 for calendar year 2011. The accumulated operating deficit since the opening of The Centre was up to $7,568,581 as of December 31, 2011. The losses have been absorbed by Vanderburgh County.

The Centre lost money in the years that the Executive Inn was adjacent to it and have continued to mount up since the City of Evansville demolished the hotel to make way for the Ford Center. The interest on the debt incurred to build The Centre is not specifically addressed in the report. If the interest is in another account the cumulative losses would be increased by that amount.

IS IT TRUE the County Commissioners are contemplating doing something to make Burdette Park become a “destination”?…depending just what they mean by “destination” for 3 or 4 months a year this idea may just have some merit as the basics for family recreation seem to be in place and have been for years?…the pool at Burdette provides a favorable experience in so long as the babbling hoard that goes there keeps dirty diapers out of the water and the maintenance crew does their job?…maintenance and cleanliness have been a repellent to many to go to Burdette for many years now but much of that blame lies with a small number of slovenly people who are allowed by the staff to soil the place without consequence?…prior to spending $25,000 on a marketing campaign there needs to be some basic maintenance and upgrading done and a written operations plan to assure that the new visitors drawn to this “destination” by the marketing will have a favorable experience and come back?…the stewards of Burdette Park can take some lessons from Holiday World in keeping a park clean, being user friendly, and running a tight ship?…that Burdette Park will be competing with Holiday World for customers and will have to offer an equivalent experience per dollar to make any new promotion a success?…we wonder where the Evansville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau stands on Burdette Park as a tourist destination?…if it is so great and the ECVB has missed this hidden pearl there should be some discussion about that?…we also wonder how on earth there could possibly be any hope of success without a $40 Million hotel sitting right next to it?

IS IT TRUE the saga of the socialist regime that was voted to lead France just continues to get more amusing?…when newly elected President Francois Hollande ran on a platform of soaking the evil rich to the tune of a 75% marginal income tax rate he probably did not think that the incidence of out migration of wealthy French people would increase by 500% in the first year of his reign?…a very prominent actor named Gerard Depardieu is the latest defector to renounce his citizenship and leave France?…his choice of residence for tax purposes did indeed shock a few people when he chose to leave French soil for RUSSIA where he was embraced by President Vladimir Putin?…many will be surprised to learn that RUSSIA has apparently learned its lesson from its 70 year failed experiment with Communism and now has a 13% FLAT RATE for INCOME TAX?…if the Ruskies had a decent place from a weather perspective they may just be in a position to recruit many of the world’s best minds with earning capacity to their shores?…that while France does not have an EXIT FEE associated with leaving their country, the good old USA does indeed charge people of means a pretty stiff fee to leave as was shown when one of the Facebook founders did exactly that in moving to Singapore to minimize the future tax bite of selling his billion+ worth of shares?

IS IT TRUE the exodus to minimize taxes is happening with a select group in California too?…the lock up period for selling Facebook shares by employees has lapsed and the phenomena of “cashing out” as is a Silicon Valley tradition for stock option millionaires has begun?…there are perhaps thousands of every day workers at Facebook who have stock options worth millions of dollars?…California just passed a referendum to tax these evil performers at a 13% marginal rate on their state income tax?…most of these people have been earning below the $250,000 billionaire threshold set by the Obama Administration and have a “one time” event in the millions to deal with?…if they remain on their jobs in California and cash out a cool $10 Million in stock options the State of California will be standing there smiling to take $1.3 Million of those dollars?…if they rent an apartment, get a driver’s license, and register to vote in Nevada, Florida or 5 other states that have NO INCOME TAX before cashing out that tax burden goes to ZERO?…after a year on hiatus that paid them $1.3 Million they can then return to Silicon Valley and get a different job if they wish because jobs there for techies are plentiful and there is not a damn thing the California legislator can do about spending a year out of state on a tax vacation?

EVSC to Offer Summer Engineering Camp

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center (SICTC) is hosting a two-week summer engineering camp, iEngineering 2.0, for students currently in the seventh and eighth grades in Evansville and the surrounding areas who are interested in exploring engineering-related fields. The camp, scheduled for June 3-14, 2013, is a half-day program that will focus on topics related to engineering, manufacturing and architecture. Students will learn about:

· Soldering

· Basic electrical circuits

· Vex robots

· CNC machining

· Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Software

· Architectural fundamentals

· Electro-magnetic motors

· Introduction to engineering concepts

Students also will attend a field trip to a local manufacturing company. In addition, bus transportation may be available for students residing in Vanderburgh County.
