BASEBALL ACES TO BATTLE #9 VANDERBILT WEDNESDAY IN NASHVILLE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  The University of Evansville baseball team will take on one of the nation’s top teams on Wednesday afternoon, as the Purple Aces will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the #9 Vanderbilt Commodores at Hawkins Field.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s game can be seen live on the SEC Network+ streaming service.

Wednesday’s game will feature two of the nation’s top offenses when it comes to knocking doubles around the yard, as both UE and Vanderbilt rank in the nation’s top 10 so far in the category.  Evansville entered the week ranked third in NCAA Division I baseball with 26 doubles, while Vanderbilt ranked sixth with 24.  Evansville came up just one double shy of the program’s single-game school record for doubles on Sunday, as UE knocked seven doubles in an 18-4 win at New Orleans.

Evansville will enter Wednesday’s game at 4-3 on the season after Sunday’s win at UNO.  Offensively, Evansville is hitting .339 this year, with three players hitting above .400 in junior second baseman Cal McGinnis (.469), senior shortstop Simon Scherry (.417) and graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger (.400).  The Purple Aces have averaged 10.7 runs per game, and UE’s 75 runs through seven contests is the second-most in school history, behind only the 1956 squad, which scored 84 runs in its first seven games on the way to a school-best 11-0-1 start.

Vanderbilt, meanwhile, took a 5-3 overall record into Tuesday night’s game against Indiana State.  The Commodores entered the week hitting .295 as a team, led by senior catcher Alan Espinal’s .393 average.  Vanderbilt continues to be built around pitching and defense, as the Commodores boast a .982 fielding percentage while posting a 4.69 staff ERA with 85 strikeouts against just 37 walks in 71.0 innings of work.  Vanderbilt has held the opposition to a .218 batting average so far this season.

UE will turn to senior RHP Shane Harris (1-1, 13.50 ERA) to get the start on the mound on Wednesday.  Harris started last year’s contest at Vanderbilt, and held the Commodores to just a single run on two hits in 5.0 innings of work.  Evansville and Vanderbilt played a marathon 17-inning contest last March in Nashville in which the Commodores picked up a 2-1 victory.  The game ranked as the longest contest in Vanderbilt baseball history, and it was the second-longest game in NCAA Division I baseball last season.

IURC HOLDS A RATE INCREASE HEARING THIS THURSDAY AT ONEP

CenterPoint Energy has filed a request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to increase the monthly electric rates for residential customers.

The IURC will hold a public hearing regarding CenterPoint’s proposal this Thursday to allow customers to voice their support or opposition to the proposed rate increase. Customers can attend sessions at 2 pm or 6 pm CT.

The proposed rate hike would result in a typical residential customer paying an additional $28 per month by 2026. The increase would be implemented gradually, with $10 in late 2024, $6 in 2025, and $12 in 2026.

USI Art and Design students bring home wins from Addy Awards

The University of Southern Indiana Art and Design Department in the College of Liberal Arts is excited to announce that six students won Addys at the annual Addy Awards on Friday, February 16 at Bally’s Evansville, hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) Greater Evansville Club. Students entered their own original artwork into the competition that included entries from universities and colleges around the region.

Students, their placings and their submission categories are listed below:

USI Global Studies to welcome Pilar Egüez Guevara as Distinguished Scholar presenter

This year, the College will welcome Pilar Egüez Guevara, PhD, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in Kleymeyer Hall, located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center, to present her documentary. Raspando Coco, a film about the food and medicinal traditions of Afro-Ecuadorians, and a lecture, Coconut Controversies Gone Global: A Case Study from Ecuador.  

Guevara is an Ecuadorian cultural anthropologist, writer and award-winning filmmaker. Over the past 20 years, she has lived, worked, and carried out research and community-based projects in and about Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Japan. She is co-founder and director of Comidas que Curan (Foods that Heal), an independent food education and media company dedicated to researching and promoting traditional foods and knowledge through ethnographic research and film.  

Raspando Coco has won and been nominated for multiple awards including the Official Selection for the 2019 Liberación Film Festival and Official Selection for the 2019 Latin American Studies Association Film Festival. The film unravels the controversies surrounding overeating coconut in Esmeraldas, which are largely rooted in the clash between Western medical beliefs and local food traditions. 

Her presentation will focus on the dietary role of coconuts in the Esmeraldan culture and how today, Esmeraldans shy away from eating this and other local and traditional foods out of fear of getting sick.  

This event is open to the public at no charge but registration is required.

USI at home to end regular season Eagles host Lindenwood, SEMO during final week​​​​​​​

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball enters the final week of the 2023-24 regular season when it hosts Lindenwood University Thursday and Southeast Missouri State University Saturday at Screaming Eagles Arena. Tipoff Thursday versus Lindenwood and Saturday versus SEM0 is set for 7:30 p.m. each night.
 
The USI-Lindenwood Thursday showdown is the Heart Health Red Out Game, sponsored by Ascension St. Vincent of Evansville, while the Eagles will celebrate Senior Night prior to the USI-SEMO contest.

USI is tied for eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference with Tennessee Tech University with the two games left in the regular season for both squads. The Screaming Eagles (8-21, 5-11 OVC) owns the tiebreaker if Morehead State University is the top seed in the upcoming tournament.
 
The TTU Golden Eagles (10-19, 5-11 OVC) are scheduled to visit the University of Tennessee at Martin Thursday and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Saturday to finish the 2023-24 regular season. TTU has the tiebreaker with USI if UT Martin or Little Rock finishes ahead of MSU.
 
If USI and TTU should stumble this week, SEMO has a chance to jump both with a sweep of MSU and the Screaming Eagles.  
 
The top eight teams at the end of OVC play advance to the league tournament March 6-9 at the Ford Center in Evansville.
 
The Eagles were 1-3 during the road trip, after posting a split last week. USI defeated MSU, 80-73, on Tuesday, but lost to Western Illinois University, 82-76, Saturday. Junior guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) led the Eagles last week with 27.5 points per game, while sophomore guard/forward AJ Smith (Edwardsville, Illinois) posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds per game. Junior forward Jack Mielke (Downers Grove, Illinois) also averaged in double-digits last week with 12.5 points per game.
 
For the season, Hernandez leads USI with 17.3 points per game this season, 21.3 points per contest in the OVC. Smith follows Hernandez with 14.0 points and a team-best 9.2 rebounds per outing, while posting a team-high 12 double-doubles.
 
The Lions of Lindenwood (8-21, 2-14 OVC) enter the week having lost seven-straight. Lindenwood started last week with a 106-82 loss to the University of Tennessee at Martin Thursday at home and concluded its home schedule with an 82-73 loss to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Saturday.
 
USI took the first meeting versus Lindenwood in St. Charles, Missouri, 73-62, and leads the all-time series, 7-0. Eagles’ Smith led USI to the victory in the first meeting with a career-high 27 points and nine rebounds. Hernandez and sophomore forward Kiyron Powell (Evansville, Indiana) followed with 16 points and 11 points, respectively.
 
The Redhawks of SEMO (8-21, 3-13 OVC) start the week still in the hunt for a spot in the OVC Championship despite having lost five-straight. SEMO, who visits Morehead State University before coming to USI, was 0-2 last week after losing at home to Little Rock, 83-61, and UT Martin, 82-72. 
 
USI lost the opening game of the season series with SEMO, falling in overtime, 93-91, on a last second shot in the extra period and trails the all-time series, 5-3. Hernandez led the Eagles with a career-high 35 points, while Smith had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
