UE’s Concrete Canoe Team Earns Record Finish at Nationals

0

Despite unexpected challenges, such as a canoe that cracked in half, the University of Evansville’s Concrete Canoe team earned 12th place overall in the American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition — the team’s second highest finish in its 12-year history.

The 25th annual competition took place June 14-16 at the University of Nevada, Reno. Twenty-two teams from some of the top engineering schools in the United States and Canada competed and were judged on the design, construction, innovative features, and racing ability of each concrete canoe.

UE’s 17-member team finished seventh in the technical paper category, 10th in oral presentation, 13th in the races, and 12th overall. UE was the smallest school and the only private American university that qualified for the competition.

One harrowing moment came before the last race on Saturday, when UE’s purple and gray canoe, Tempest (measuring 20 feet long and weighing 250 pounds) cracked in half as team members climbed in.

Thanks to help from several other universities’ Concrete Canoe teams and plenty of duct tape, Tempest was patched up in time for the Aces to complete their final race.

“This year, our students not only proved that they can excel in the academic and athletic portions of the competition, but also that they can think and act quickly to solve problems,” said Mark Valenzuela, UE associate professor of civil engineering and the team’s faculty advisor. “I’m so proud of their hard work and dedication, and know this experience will serve them well in their future careers as civil engineers.”

Last year, UE hosted the National Concrete Canoe Competition and was the smallest school ever invited to do so. This year marks the third time in the past four years that UE has qualified for nationals.

School Principal Bans Singing Of ‘God Bless The USA’ From Graduation

4

Principal Greta Hawkins: NYC PS 90

CONEY ISLAND, BROOKLYN (WPIX)— It’s a story that certainly has parents fuming while scratching their heads over a decision made by a school principal that is a bit out of tune.

Greta Hawkins is the principal of PS 90, the Edna Cohen School in Coney Island. According to parents of the Kindergarten class, Hawkins has banned the students from singing “God Bless the USA” at their graduation. The thing is, the little kids have been rehearsing the patriotic tune for weeks now, and were disappointed and confused at the principal’s decision.

Parents say Hawkins demanded the song be dropped from the program citing that the song offends other cultures. What is even more out of tune, parents say, is the Department of Education’s response. They stand by the principal, saying the song is too old for this age group.

Instead, they are allowing the children to sing Justin Bieber’s teeny bopper hit ” Baby, Baby, Baby, Oh.”

Parents that PIX11 spoke to Monday morning are even more upset that they had to learn of this rash decision from the media, and not from the school itself, a school that prides itself in teaching about freedom.

According to reports, Hawkins has been cited before by the Department of Education for being racist towards other teachers back in 2010.

IS IT TRUE June 18, 2012

25

The Mole #??

IS IT TRUE June 18, 2012

IS IT TRUE the parks of the City of Evansville have once again been called out for being a garbage filled mess where drug addicts needles, rubbers (condoms for those who don’t like that word), and liquor bottles ruin the place for families with children to enjoy these parks?…that the job of keeping 2,300 acres mowed and cleaned is a daunting task to begin with but it seems after at least a decade of people knowing the truth that the truth is finally being spoken?…that truth is that there are a number of people who do utilize and enjoy the Evansville parks that are using the parks for drug use and distribution, have sex in public, and even intentionally overturn waste containers to spread garbage all over the place?…we admire the attention to the litter that has been broadcasted by Mayor Winnecke and a small army of litter picker uppers?…these efforts while noble and the right just seem to be so small in the face of the garbage problem that picking up trash may be to Evansville about as effective as pouring a cup of coffee into the Ohio River to try and warm it up?…we wonder if the people of Evansville in total are just too full of slobs and irresponsible people for those who prefer tidiness and cleanliness to make a difference?…it sure seems that way?

IS IT TRUE that one thing for sure is that the City of Evansville is currently in the middle of expanding the park system by two with those being the 37 acres at Roberts Stadium and another being Mayor Weinzapfel’s last minute glorification announcement of the Centennial Park on the lot behind the old Greyhound Bus station?…that we are sure that both parks can be nice but will cost nearly $10 Million to build and another $1 Million or so per year to maintain?…this is happening when the parks director is open and honest about the fact that they can’t keep up with the mowing and litter removal at the parks that Evansville does have?…that given the state of Evansville’s parks and the admission of the people in charge that they can’t keep the parks we have in good order that the last thing Evansville needs to do is expand the parks?…what needs to be considered is to eliminate the problem parks by either letting them go fallow or selling them at public auction?…that maybe if there are only parks in neighborhoods where the people of the neighborhood patrol the parks then the City can actually keep the parks clean?…the goal right now needs to be to shrink the park system by eliminating acreage starting with the biggest problem parks?…the 2,300 acres may not be manageable with the kind of budget that Evansville can afford and the only solution is to take the size down to what an acceptable budget can handle even if that is going down to 1,000 acres or less?

IS IT TRUE that last week it was reported that the song “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood was banned from a classroom in a public school?…this song was widely associated with President Ronald Reagan and was played at his campaign rallies?…while we support the separation of church and state banning a song that still gives one a sense of pride in our country that was part of a campaign seems more aimed at the ideology of President Reagan than at violation of church and state?…the teacher that made the decision to ban this song needs to learn to read the words on the American currency that pays her salary?…it is time for such shenanigans to come with some consequence?…we hear that Cuba is hiring teachers and would like to suggest that the teacher who banned this song needs to get herself a job in Cuba where the currency may meet with her approval for political correctness?…this kind of nonsense will someday provoke a serious backlash at the ballot box and in public budgets?

Grant will expand USI’s underwater robotics program

0

The Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center (SwISTEM) at the University of Southern Indiana is expanding its SeaPerch, underwater robotics, program to more schools in 2013. The expansion is made possible through a $4,500 grant from the Posey County Community Foundation. The grant will provide funds for instructional workshops, robotics kits, and team registration fees for as many as 25 teams in Posey County schools.

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that trains educators to teach their students in grades 5-12 how to build an underwater vehicle. Students follow a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts using remotely operated vehicles built from kits provided by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division. NSWC-Crane partners with USI on programs to advance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.

Through the grant, up to 25 teachers will attend a one-day workshop introducing them to SeaPerch curriculum and competition rules and guidelines. Additionally, 25 kits will be purchased for teams.

“This grant will open the door for schools that couldn’t afford to create a team or hadn’t thought about trying to form a team,” saidAllison Grabert, interim director of the Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center in USI’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education.

USI’s SeaPerch program is available to schools across southern Indiana. In 2012, 26 high school and 42 middle school teams participated, including Marrs Elementary School and North Posey High School in Posey County. “We’re excited about extending the SeaPerch experience to even more Posey County students,” said Grabert. “This is now possible due to this generous funding.”

The next competition is tentatively scheduled for February 2013 at the Mount Vernon Junior/Senior High School natatorium. This will be the third year USI has hosted the regional competition—part of the larger national SeaPerch competition.
