SMG Releases Outstanding Year End

Report For The Centre

Evansville, IN~ SMG delivered an excellent Year End Management Operations Report for 2011 to the Vanderburgh County Commission last evening. Included were details of The Centre’s 226 events, totaling 359 event related days, with an attendance estimated conservatively of over 148,000.

The Centre hosted Broadway performances of Legally Blonde, Spamalot, South Pacific, and three showings of Mamma Mia!. Other great artists included Don Williams, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Hinder, Max & Ruby, Allison Krauss and Union Station, Oak Ridge Boys, Straight No Chaser, Moscow Ballet, and Vince Gill & Amy Grant. Numerous events and conventions were hosted including the Illinois Oil & Gas Convention, dance recitals, trade shows, conferences, and receptions.

Revenue from events at the Centre totaled $1,940,074.66 for 2011. The Centre for the 2011 fiscal year was $297,523.25 under budget.

Event surveys were sent out to all users for 2011, the surveys returned rated their overall experience at the Centre to be 4.49 out of 5, with 1 being “Poor”, and 5 “Excellent”!

The SMG part time staff completed Customer Service Training and received certification through the Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission program for serving alcoholic beverages. Annual training for Emergency Procedures was completed by all event staff and volunteer Ushers.

The first quarter of 2012 will have had two bridal shows, a motorcycle show, a race car auction and trade show, Illinois Oil and Gas Convention, The Really Big Show, Three “Centre’d on Kids” children’s Broadway productions, Disney Live, Cirque Dreams Pop Goes Rock, Sandi Patty and Patsy Clairmont, the Pink Floyd Experience, Gabriel Iglesias, Damn Yankees, Girls In Bloom, and the Home Show, along with numerous receptions, meetings, and training sessions.

SMG continues to build upon the recurring, annual events, as well as pursuing new events that will increase the usage of the Centre, as well as bring quality entertainment to Evansville and Vanderburgh County.

IS IT TRUE that in the time it takes to say “Pigeon Roost” that the entire prospects for the future of the McCurdy Hotel and the other yet to be named downtown hotel have changed dramatically?…that the McCurdy Hotel has attracted the interest of the Kunkel Group along with their new partner in the project Bloomington’s Randall Lloyd to the table to turn the McCurdy into 96 apartments?…that Kunkel has announced a deal with 5th 3rd Bank, the former employer of Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke for a $2 Million loan to move forward with the project and will not be asking the City of Evansville for any additional money?…that the project is estimated by Kunkel to cost $13 Million ($135,000 per apartment) so the real determining factor to get some work started will be whether or not another $11 Million can be secured?…that we do wish Kunkel well with this project but do caution city dwellers that getting loans of that size for projects of that size is still not something that banks are known for?…that we do applaud the fact that this project is proposed to go forward with all private money at this point?…that the strings and restrictions that always come with government money and government loans will hopefully not find a way to bind the hands of Kunkel on this project?…that maybe the EB-5 financing program would be a good one to tap for Kunkel to get the funding and avoid the spider web of restrictions that will come with any public money at all?

IS IT TRUE that we would have preferred to see a fully restored vintage McCurdy Hotel?…that is really the best use for the property from the communities perspective?…that in the absence of a private self funded developer coming forward to do this that we are encouraged to see the Kunkel Group take on this project with ALL PRIVATE MONEY?

IS IT TRUE that Kunkel is also on record as stating that if the City of Evansville spends $40,000 on a new Hunden study that results in another RFP that they are not interested?…that this is understandable as both Kunkel and Prime Lodging seem to have spent substantial sums of money chasing a deal that the previous administration did not think through?…that in a way was an unintentional misleading of two local companies that squandered precious resources on a “GOOSE CHASE”?…that we hope that both of these companies move on and prosper?

IS IT TRUE that we wonder if the City of Evansville will ever see even one red cent of the $800,000 that they doled out to City Centre Properties as an incentive to do at the McCurdy what Kunkel is now announcing plans for?…that we guess that next year the City of Evansville will be sending an IRS Form 1099 to City Centre Properties LLC to report $800,000 of income based on loan forgiveness?

IS IT TRUE that there has been much uproar this week over the departure of an employee of the EVSC shortly after completing a master’s degree that EVSC paid $42,000 for?…that little has been said about the fact that the other nine are still on the job at EVSC?…that a 90% retention rate on anything is pretty good?…that if the goal was to spend $420,000 to get 10 MS degrees on staff that the plan just changed slightly to $46,666 for each of the 9 MS degrees that will still be on staff?…that this is one case where the glass is 90% full?…that we hope that the politics of envy and the commotion from this does not run the other 9 off making the program a bust?…that indentured servitude did not work well in the 1600’s and will not work now?…that if the gentleman who is leaving is being served better by leaving than by staying we should wish him well as opposed to demonizing him as many Evansville based places do to their former employees?…that that way to make amends is to replace this gentleman is by hiring someone with similar qualifications away from the Louisville School Corporation?

USI men’s basketball wins GLVC championship

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The 13th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team came back from an 11-point first half deficit to win the GLVC Tournament Championship and defeat 10th-ranked Northern Kentucky University, 60-56, Sunday afternoon at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois. USI, the fifth-seed in the tournament, rises to 24-6 overall, while NKU goes to 23-6.

The GLVC Tournament title is the third in the history of the program and first for USI since 2007. The conference title also came from four wins in eight days.

The victory gives the Screaming Eagles the GLVC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II Tournament and the Midwest Regional scheduled for March 10-13. The Midwest Regional is likely to be held at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.

The entire 64-team field (eight teams per region) will be announced on the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Basketball Selection Show Sunday at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com. The women’s tournament field will be announced at 9 p.m. with the men’s following immediately at 9:30 p.m.

UE’s Fusae Ekida to Discuss Japanese Noh Plays in Andiron Lecture

As part of the University of Evansville’s Andiron Lecture Series in the liberal arts and sciences, Fusae Ekida, assistant professor of Japanese and director of the Japanese Studies Program in the Department of Foreign Languages, will present “Secret Noh Plays: History and Tradition.”

Ekida will speak at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 in Eykamp Hall, Room 252 in the Ridgway University Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Noh plays, a popular form of Japanese entertainment originating in the 13th century, are today revered as theatrical art,” said Ekida. “This presentation will provide the history and tradition of the Noh plays in addition to the secret plays, which are some of the most highly ranked plays in the modern Noh repertoire.”

Ekida earned her PhD at the University of Washington. She has a wide range of research interests, from historical linguistics to Japanese classical literature. She is a coauthor of “Historical Development of the Accusative Case Marking in Japanese as Seen in Classical Literary Texts,” published in the Journal of Japanese Linguistics.

Established in 1982, the Andiron Lectures offer stimulating research, commentary, and reflection from many fields of study. Presenters are primarily drawn from the faculty of UE’s College of Arts and Sciences but also include faculty members and administrators from across the University campus and contributions from the regional community. The Andiron Lectures are sponsored by the University of Evansville College of Arts and Sciences and supported by a generous gift from Donald B. and Jean Korb.

Wichita Voter Uprising Defeats Crony Capitalism Hotel Deal

The Wall Street Journal today published an opinion piece on a public uprising in Wichita that defeated a good old boy deal to exempt a downtown hotel from a large portion of the taxes that the other hotels in town have to pay. The manner in which the Wichita City Council and their masters passed this by a 6 – 1 margin so enraged the electorate that it was overturned by a populace that was fed up with this sort of dealing.

It was impossible not to think of the back room dealing in Evansville’s recent past with respect to the scheme to remove the Homestead Tax Credit, the deals cut for the McCurdy and the Executive Inn empty lot that did not bear fruit, and a host of other deals including the ball fields that refuse to move that smack of crony capitalism. Please read the article and pay particular attention to the closing lines.

“But voters were so enraged by the insider dealing that they launched a petition drive for a voter referendum. Despite hundreds of thousands of dollars spent by hotel advocates, almost 10 times more than opponents spent, voters routed the subsidy 61% to 39%.

The elites are stunned, but they shouldn’t be. The core issue is fairness—and not of the soak-the-rich kind that President Obama practices. One of the leaders of the opposition, Derrick Sontag, director of Americans for Prosperity in Kansas, says that what infuriated voters was the veneer of “political cronyism.”

What Americans seem to want most from government these days is equal treatment. They increasingly realize that powerful government nearly always helps the powerful, whether the beneficiaries are a union that can carve a sweet deal as part of an auto bailout or corporations that can hire lobbyists to write a tax loophole.

This is why Americans hate the Obama Administration’s Solyndra handouts, or rebel when city hall abuses eminent domain to bully people out of their homes for a big business the way New London, Connecticut did in the Kelo case for Pfizer Corp. Let’s hope for more such popular uprisings.”

Disney On Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic Honors Evansville Police and Fire Departments

WHO: Disney On Ice has invited 100 Evansville officers from the police and fire
departments to honor them and acknowledge their 100+ years of service. Each
officer will be escorted by a child to the special honors luncheon. Mayor
Winnecke will speak on behalf of the City of Evansville and Disney On Ice to
thank the officers for their dedicated service and to present each department
with 100 complimentary tickets to the opening night performance of Disney On
Ice. The grand finale will be a meet and greet with the stars of the show, Mickey
and Minnie Mouse.
