Darrah updates women’s weight throw record at Blue-White Classic

The Purple Aces throwers set multiple personal records on Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Sophomore thrower Gwen Darrah continues to improve her weight throw as a small group of the University of Evansville track and field team competed in Terre Haute.

The Purple Aces throwers and runner Sarah Vanderhoof-Dossett (Franklin, Tenn. / Independence HS) set three PRs and one season-best at the Blue-White Classic hosted by Indiana State. Darrah (Cleveland, Ohio / Orange HS) improved on the women’s weight throw record with a 14.45-meter throw for fifth place. UE also saw top five finishes from Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind. / Princeton Community HS) in both the men’s shot put and the men’s weight throw, Jaden Hayes (Huntingburg, Ind. / Southridge HS) in the men’s weight throw, and Vanderhoof-Dossett in the women’s mile.

As Evansville’s lone runner, Vanderhoof-Dossett ran the mile in 5:27.89. She was also slated to run the 3000-meter but was unable to start. For the Aces throwers on the women’s side, Darrah had a record day in the weight throw while two others competed in the event. Senior Hannah Bryan (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) had a top 10 finish with a throw of 10.30 meters while freshman Jillian Miller (Boonville, Ind. / Boonville HS) placed 12th with a throw of 9.30 meters. UE had three women compete in the shot put as well with Miller leading the way at eighth throwing for 9.08 meters and a personal record. Junior Kaitlyn Sansone (Fairfield, Ohio / Mercy McAuley HS) finished ninth with a throw of 9.05 meters and Brooke Springer (Henderson, Ky. / Henderson Community HS) was 10th with a throw of 8.96 meters.

On the men’s side, Dove and Hayes had strong outings for Evansville. Dove threw a season-best weight throw of 17.19 meters for a podium finish of third place. Hayes also set a PR in the weight throw, finishing in fourth with a 16.99-meter throw. Freshman Cole Johnson had his first outing in the weight throw with a throw of 12.20 meters. Dove and Hayes also competed in the shot put, finishing fifth and eighth with throws of 14.52 meters and 13.64 meters respectively.

The entire Purple Aces track and field team returns to action next week at the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt.

Attorney General Todd Rokita fires off legal opinion in support of Hoosiers’ Second Amendment rights

0

Attorney General Todd Rokita is defending Hoosiers’ Second Amendment rights in a legal opinionrequested by the Indiana State Police regarding the FBI’s misunderstanding of Indiana law.

“In Indiana, we believe expungement restores civil rights, including Hoosiers’ Second Amendment rights,” Attorney General Rokita said. “America values justice and liberty for all, and this includes reinstating the right to vote, hold public office, serve as a juror, and purchase a firearm.”

The FBI has denied the right of Hoosiers who have successfully had specific categories of felony convictions expunged in Indiana courts to purchase or possess firearms.

Each state has its own list of criminal records that can be expunged. What is eligible for expungement depends on the state – not the FBI.

The Legislature has spoken unequivocally as to what categories of felonies are eligible for expungement consideration, and Indiana’s expungement process does NOT apply to the following felonies:

· a sex or violent offender

· a person convicted of official misconduct

· a person convicted of any homicide offense

· a person convicted of any human and sex trafficking offense

· a person convicted of any sex crime offense

· a person convicted of two or more felony offenses that involved the unlawful use of a deadly weapon and were not committed as part of the same episode of criminal conduct

· a person convicted of a felony that resulted in the death of another person

These exceptions aim to keep people safe from violent felons obtaining weapons while also preserving the rights of those who have had more minor crimes erased or expunged from their criminal record.

“Our legislators are voted in by regular, everyday Hoosiers,” Attorney General Rokita said. “They take on issues important to the public while ensuring they follow the U.S. and Indiana constitutions. Any limitations on owning or purchasing a firearm must be very narrow and clearly justified to avoid the violation to our Second Amendment rights.”

Guy Relford, an Indiana attorney, radio host, author, Certified Firearms Instructor, and founder of The2AProject.com also submitted feedback in support of Attorney General Rokita’s Opinion.

“Bureaucrats in Washington have repeatedly attempted to thwart the clear intention of the Indiana General Assembly to restore the right to possess a firearm of persons who have earned the opportunity to expunge their felony convictions,” Relford said. “In that process, I believe that the FBI and the federal Department of Justice have intentionally mischaracterized and misinterpreted our expungement statute so as to wrongfully deny the Second Amendment rights of Hoosiers. Official Opinion 2024-1, issued today by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, clarifies our expungement statute and demonstrates Indiana’s continued fight to protect the Second Amendment rights of Indiana residents against the constant onslaught on those rights by the federal government.”

Attorney General Rokita’s Office released the Gun Owners’ Bill of Rights in 2022 to ensure law-abiding Hoosiers fully understand their Second Amendment rights, including the right to purchase and own firearms in cases of expungement.

Vincennes Track and Field continues to add qualifiers after split meet weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. and Marion, Ind. – The Vincennes University Indoor Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams decided to adopt a strategy of divide and conquer this past weekend, with men’s sprinters and field athletes heading to Louisville for the PNC Bellarmine Classic Friday and men’s and women’s distance runners taking part in the Indiana Wesleyan University Midwest Classic in Marion on Saturday.

The Trailblazers added more National qualifiers over the weekend and look to be really close to adding a few more as the Indoor season continues.

Friday, members of the VU men’s team headed back to Louisville, Ky. to take part in the PNC Bellarmine Classic and once again found some very tough competition, competing against 16 NCAA Division I programs.

The Trailblazers were led by an outstanding day by sophomore Olegs Kozjakovs, who placed sixth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.75 meters, surpassing the NJCAA National qualifying standard.

Sophomore Cohen Gallant and freshman Olamipo Ladipo took part in the 60 meter dash, with Gallant placing 16th with a time of 7.06 seconds and Ladipo right behind him in 17th at 7.08 seconds.

Gallant would then compete in the 200 meter race, finishing 46th with a time of 23.51 seconds, while Ladipo placed 22nd in the 400 meters with a time of 50.67 seconds.

Sophomore Matthew Gray (Washington, Ind.) led a number of VU runners in the 800 meter race, placing 39th overall with a time of 2:03.97

Gray was joined by freshmen Nathan Whitehead (Vincennes, Ind.) and Alex Kwizera (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the 800 meters, with Whitehead placing 48th at 2:10.28 and Kwizera placing 54th at 2:16.99.

In the men’s throwing events, freshman Jacob Wickman placed 21st in the shot put with a throw of 12.46 meters and 28th in the weight throw with a toss of 11.62 meters.

USI Institute for Alcohol and Drug Studies to explore current trends in opioid use and substance use disorders

0

Mary Beth O’Connor, author of From Junkie to Judge: One Woman’s Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction, will be one of the keynote speakers for the University of Southern Indiana’s 41st annual Institute for Alcohol and Drug Studies (IADS) May 15-17 in Carter Hall, located in University Center West on the USI campus. The three-day conference is for counselors, social workers, case managers, therapists, nurses, personnel directors, correction personnel, educators and all other professions interested in the impact of alcohol and drug use disorders/addictions.

For O’Connor, childhood abuse and other traumas led to drug use and addiction at an early age. She struggled with methamphetamine addiction until she was 32 years old. Six years into recovery, she attended Berkeley Law at the University of California. After graduation, she worked at a large firm in Silicon Valley, then litigated class actions for the federal government. In 2014, O’Connor was appointed a federal Administrative Law Judge, a position from which she retired in 2020.

She will present her personal story with key concepts and examples of how to build a personal recovery plan and ways to approach it which include how trauma and addiction are connected. She will also lead two concurrent sessions: one on recovery and peer support options and the other on the benefits of journaling and using writing as part of healing.

In addition to O’Connor, Dr. Andrew Chambers, Psychiatrist with the Indiana University Neuroscience Center, will give a keynote presentation on current practices related to treatment of substance use disorders with an underlying mental health diagnosis, the biology of mental health and addiction and safe medications for those in recovery. During his first concurrent session, Chambers will address adolescent vulnerability to addiction. During his second session, he will screen a film he created that animates the neuroscience of addiction in mental illness, followed by a discussion.

Also, during the conference local experts will present concurrent sessions on a variety of topics, such as:

  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Safe prescribing for people in recovery
  • Change and orientation group
  • CRAFFT model
  • Harm reduction
  • Restorative yoga
  • Illegal narcotic use and distribution trends
  • Ethics, HIV and hepatitis C education

Enrollment cost is $315 for all three days, $135 for Wednesday only, $135 for Thursday only and $75 for Friday only. There is a reduced cost for students.

Registration information is available at USI.edu/IADS. For conference information, call 1-877-USI-HLTH or 812-461-5217.

2024 USI M. Edward Jones Engagement Award now open for nominations

0

University of Southern Indiana Outreach and Engagement is now accepting nominations for the 2024 M. Edward Jones Engagement Award through Friday, February 23. The M. Edward Jones Engagement Award was created to recognize an individual, group or project for excellence in leadership, commitment to quality, tireless service and dedication to lifelong learning in fulfilling the outreach mission of the University of Southern Indiana. Thanks to the generous investment of Dr. M. Edward Jones and Cindy Brinker, the recipient will receive a $1,000 award.

“Over the last nine years, outstanding award recipients have been recognized for their remarkable work within the community,” says Dawn Stoneking, Executive Director of Outreach and Engagement. “We are grateful for the strong culture of educators, innovators and collaborators who enhance bonds between community, government, businesses, organizations and individuals, responding to their needs and fostering learning and growth.”

The award was founded in 2015 to honor M. Edward Jones, Vice Provost Emeritus for the University of Southern Indiana’s Outreach and Engagement. Jones, Founding Director of Continuing Education (now Outreach and Engagement), was a key player in creating and expanding outreach efforts during his USI career from 1974 to 2010. His endeavors significantly bolstered the growth and range of programs Outreach and Engagement offers.

The 2023 M. Edward Jones Engagement Award was awarded to Charmaine McDowell, former Director of Corporate Partnerships with Outreach and Engagement. In her three decades of service, McDowell created programs and partnerships that connect USI resources with the needs of the greater community, including safety training and employee development.

Faculty, staff, retirees, students and alumni may submit nominations at USI.edu/JonesAward. For more information about the M. Edward Jones Award, visit USI.edu/JonesAward.

Outreach and Engagement’s mission is to provide and facilitate quality educational, research, and technical services for people, groups and organizations in Indiana and the Tri-state.
