USI to partner with Evansville African American Museum to present Black Art Workshop Weekend and Exhibition

The University of Southern Indiana Art and Design Department will partner with the Evansville African American Museum to present the Black Art Workshop and Exhibition in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries, located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The workshop event is set for Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30, and the exhibition will run Monday, June 24 to Friday, August 30.

The workshop consists of four guest artists’ presentations:

  • Lunden King
  • Ayinde Rochon
  • Matthew Fields
  • Kenneth Randle

“The workshop aims to offer exclusive space for the representation and mentoring of Black artists. To specify, one must be a regional or local Black artist to participate at the Evansville African American Museum as an artist or artist instructor,” said Tory Schendel-Vyvoda, Curator of the Evansville African American Museum. “Since no venue in Evansville is exclusively dedicated to representing Black artists, this initiative fulfills a community need while adhering to the mission of the Evansville African American Museum.”

The event is open to the public at no charge, but registration is required. Pre-registration is open Monday, March 11 through Monday, March 18. Community registration is open Tuesday, March 19 through Friday, June 14.

*Pre-registration is for BIPOC participants per the requirement of the Indiana Humanities Grant.

Supporting Hoosier First Responders

From 2018 to 2021, Indiana more than 300 paramedics and 1,000 emergency medical technicians left the emergency service industry despite requests for services increasing by 66%, according to the Governor’s Health Commission.
A shortage of workers leads to overworked first responders, which can present risks to them and the Hoosiers who need their help. That’s why I supported legislation calling for a comprehensive study on the status of our EMS workforce so we can identify ways to better support first responders throughout the state.

House Enrolled Act 1302 would require county executives to report on the status of each local EMS provider in the county to the state, which would utilize the data to explore ways to improve services and address workforce shortages. Emergency medical services are provided by fire departments and public hospitals as well as private entities that have been contracted through local communities and health providers.

EMS providers play an important role, and it’s our job to do all that we can to ensure they have the resources they need to save lives.The bill now heads to the governor for consideration as a new law. Click here to learn more.

Vincennes University’s Whitney Daugherty receives ACE Women’s Network of Indiana Rising Woman Leader Award

VINCENNES, Ind., March 11, 2024 – In a celebration of leadership and commitment to women’s professional development and advancement in higher education, Whitney Daugherty, Assistant Provost of Student Affairs at Vincennes University, was honored with the inaugural Rising Woman Leader Award by the American Council on Education Women’s Network of Indiana.

She was honored at the ACE-WIN annual conference in Indianapolis on Feb. 23 in Indianapolis.

Daugherty’s professional journey is a testament to the power of dedication and persistence in the pursuit of one’s passions. During her career, she has worn many hats and served in various roles, including Academic Advisor, Assessment Coordinator, Assistant Director of Career Services, Director of Student Activities, and finally Assistant Provost.

The Rising Woman Leader Award recognizes Daugherty’s exceptional upward trajectory in leadership roles and her dedication and advocacy. She stands out as a leader with great promise, actively contributing to the ACE Women’s Network mission of inspiring, developing, and supporting women leaders in higher education through her role as Assistant Provost and the VU ACE-WIN Institutional Representative.

Reflecting on her achievement, Daugherty expressed gratitude. “I am deeply honored to receive the Rising Woman Leader Award,” she said. “This underscores the collective efforts towards fostering an inclusive community that empowers women in higher education. Together, we can continue to transform and elevate our academic institutions.”

VU Provost Dr. Laura Treanor congratulated Daugherty, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the University community. She commented, “Whitney is an outstanding individual whose leadership qualities, dedication, and impact make her exceptionally deserving of this award. Her leadership journey has been characterized by roles of increasing responsibility, and she has demonstrated a style of inclusive leadership that has created supportive and productive environments for students and employees alike.”

Daugherty’s journey exemplifies the spirit of leadership and advocacy, making her a beacon within the ACE Women’s Network of Indiana and a source of inspiration for aspiring women leaders in higher education.

Russell takes seventh, Blazers Bowling season ends at USBC Sectionals

SMYRNA, Tenn. – The 2023-24 Vincennes University bowling season came to an end over the weekend at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles and Team Championship Sectionals hosted at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Tennessee.

VU freshman Cayden Russell (Noblesville, Ind.) led the charge for the Trailblazers at Friday’s Singles Championships, finishing with a total of 1,343 pins over six games and just missed the cut to advance to Nationals by only seven pins.

Russell got the weekend off to a great start by finishing all six games with over 200 pins, including a best game of 255 to place seventh out of 171 bowlers competing.

Freshman Dakota Waskom (Louisville, Ky.) was the second VU finisher, ending with a total of 1,210 pins and finishing in 59th place overall.

Freshman Nicholas Gregg (Salem, Ill.) was the next Trailblazer on the leaderboard, placing 65th with a total of 1,203 pins.

Junior Brighton Lucas (Salem, Ill.) and freshman Kannon King (Salem, Ill.) were next in line with Lucas finishing 120th at 1,091 and King using a team-high game of 256 to rocket up the leaderboard to 132nd with a total of 1,058.

Freshmen Dylan Lewis (Louisville, Ky.) and Ethan Ennis (Kokomo, Ind.) rounded out the VU day at the lanes Friday with Lewis ending at 995 in 150th place and Ennis ending at 975 in 156th place overall.

The Trailblazers then came back as a team to compete in the Team Championships, consisting of 64 baker games broken up into four blocks of 16 games each.

The Blazers had a good start to the team portion of the weekend, ending the first block of 16 games with a total of 2,969 pins, five games of 200-plus and were 14th overall on the leaderboard.

Vincennes was very consistent to close out Saturday, scoring 2,916 pins in the second block of games but unfortunately slid on the leaderboard down to 18th overall after the first day of team competition.

VU looked to move up the ranks when the Trailblazer bowling team returned to the lanes Sunday morning for the final 32 baker games.

Eagles come up short in Sunday doubleheader at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – University of Southern Indiana Softball opened its 2024 Ohio Valley Conference campaign on the road at Tennessee Tech University on Sunday, but the Screaming Eagles fell victim to a doubleheader sweep by final scores of 2-1 and 5-0.

The series opener saw Southern Indiana (6-11, 0-2) get a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but the Screaming Eagles could not advance either runner home. Tennessee Tech (9-6, 2-0) took advantage with three two-out singles in the bottom of the second inning to strike first, 1-0.

Following scoreless middle innings, USI tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double by senior catcher Sammie Kihega (Greenfield, Indiana) that scored senior first baseman Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) from first base. However, Tennessee Tech scored a go-ahead unearned run in the bottom half of the sixth after a pair of defensive errors by USI, allowing the Golden Eagles to take the first game.

USI scored one run on five hits, as Fair led Southern Indiana with a 2-2 game at the plate. Tennessee Tech tallied its two runs off eight hits.

USI junior pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) took the hard-luck loss to move to 5-5 this season. Newman tossed a full six innings, giving up two runs – one earned – with four strikeouts. Tennessee Tech’s senior pitcher Lennon Spicer moved to 2-3 with the win, surrendering one run in 6.1 innings, and freshman Emily York recorded the save.

In the back half of Sunday’s doubleheader, Tennessee Tech quickly took a 2-0 lead with a sac fly in the first inning and a bases-loaded RBI single in the second frame.

Just like the first game, USI had a couple of opportunities with a runner in scoring position early on but had trouble stringing together the necessary at-bats to drive a run across home plate.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tennessee Tech capitalized off back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and later put together three consecutive RBI at-bats – two singles with a sac fly sandwiched in between – to add three insurance runs, giving the Golden Eagles the double-dip sweep on Sunday.

In the second game, three of USI’s five hits came from the top three in the batting order. Kihega and senior outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana) recorded a hit in each game Sunday. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles scored its five runs in game two across nine hits.

USI junior pitcher Whitley Hunter (Nashville, Indiana) was charged with the loss in the late cap, dropping to 1-3. Hunter went four innings, allowing two runs. Tennessee Tech junior pitcher Payton Wagner moved to 3-1 with the win, hurling five shutout innings on Sunday. York closed out the second game also for Tennessee Tech, earning her fourth save with two scoreless frames.

Shooting Investigation Washington Ave./Evans Ave.

 On March 9th, around 6:10 p.m., Evansville Police Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Powell Ave. in reference to shots fired. Another caller told Dispatch that they thought it was in the 700 block of Washington Ave. Officers found the location of the shooting incident at the intersection of Washington Ave. and Evans Ave. Investigators were told that an adult male discharged his firearm at two subjects who arrived at his residence, were making threats, and were also armed with firearms. 

A short time later, Dispatch received a call from a local hospital that an adult male arrived at the hospital with a gun shot wound to his leg. Officers determined that his injury was in connection with the shots fired run at Washington Ave. and Evans Ave. 

The male survived his wound but is still receiving medical treatment. This is still an active investigation and no arrests have been made at this time. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please call the EPD Adult Investigations Unit at (812) 436-7979.

USI holding pep rally to celebrate Women’s Basketball OVC Champions

he University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball team is the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Champion, marking the first team conference championship in USI’s Division I era. In the matchup on Saturday, March 9 at the Ford Center in Evansville, the team defeated the University of Tennessee at Martin, 81-53, to earn the OVC crown.

To celebrate the team and this momentous achievement, the University will host a pep rally at 9 a.m. Monday, March 11 in the Screaming Eagles Arena. Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to attend at no charge to help celebrate the 2024 OVC champions.

Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and the pep rally will begin promptly at 9 a.m., featuring remarks from Dr. Ronald S. Rochon, USI President; Jon Mark Hall, Director of Athletics; and USI Women’s Basketball coaches and players. The USI Cheer and Dance teams and Archie Eagle mascot will also be in attendance. The pep rally is scheduled to conclude at 9:45 a.m.
