Eagles return for a pair at the PAC

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 15th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team returns to the Physical Activities Center for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games, beginning Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when Saint Joseph’s College comes for a visit. The short two-game homestand concludes Saturday when fifth-ranked University of Indianapolis comes to the PAC for a 3:15 p.m. showdown.

Following the homestand, USI hits the road Monday when it crosses the river to play fourth-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan College at 7:30 p.m. in the Owensboro Sportscenter. Monday’s match-up will be the last GLVC game in the Sportscenter for USI.

The Screaming Eagles (10-2, 3-1 GLVC) fell 15th in the NABC/NCAA Division II Top 25 poll after splitting a road trip last weekend. USI lost a lead and fell short at the University of Illinois Springfield, 73-71, last Thursday, but rebounded against Quincy University to post a 78-70 victory over the weekend.

USI senior center Keith DeWitt (High Point, North Carolina) helped get the Eagles back on track at Quincy when recorded a huge double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds. DeWitt, who led the team in the last two games with 13.5 rebounds per contest, was tied for first during the trip in scoring with junior forward Orlando Rutledge (Louisville, Kentucky) with 14.0 points each.

Rutledge was USI’s top scorer in the loss to UI Springfield, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half.

In addition to DeWitt and Rutledge, USI junior forward Aaron Nelson (Chicago Heights, Illinois) also scored in double-digits with 12.0 per contest. Nelson helped USI during a scoring drought at Quincy by hitting nine of 10 from the line and finished the trip hitting 10-of-11.

For the season, Rutledge leads the Eagles with 16.1 points per outing. He is followed by DeWitt and Nelson in the scoring column with 13.1 and 12.1 points per appearance, respectively. Junior forward Taylor Wischmeier (Brownstown, Indiana) rounds out the USI double-digit scorers at 11.5 points per outing.

The Pumas of Saint Joseph’s (4-7, 2-2 GLVC) have been a .500 team since the start of 2013. Saint Joseph’s opened GLVC action with a win at Rockhurst University and a loss at William Jewell College, duplicating the results a week later at home with a win over Missouri University of Science & Technology and a loss to Drury University.

USI has a comfortable lead in the all-time series, 47-20, and has won 19 of the last 23 meetings since 2000. The Eagles, who also have collected victories in 10 of the last 11 at the PAC, swept the season series last year, winning 85-62 at the PAC and 67-59 in Rensselaer, Indiana.

The Greyhounds of UIndy (12-0, 4-0 GLVC) have been on fire to start the season and is still one of three unbeaten teams in GLVC play. UIndy faces a tough challenge on Thursday when it faces off with unbeaten KWC (12-0, 4-0 GLVC) before coming to the PAC.

The Eagles have a hold on the all-time series, 49-18, but the Greyhounds won the 2011-12 season series, 2-1. USI’s only victory over UIndy last year came in the GLVC Tournament when it defeated the Greyhounds, 78-60.

USI starts a three-game road trip Monday as it travels to play the Panthers of KWC (12-0, 4-0 GLVC). KWC has the advantage in the all-time series, 49-36, and won two of the three games with the Eagles last year. The Panthers ended the Eagles’ 2011-12 season last March in the NCAA Division II Tournament, 64-58, and defeated USI in Owensboro, 69-54. USI won its game at the PAC, 72-57.

Harrison Theatre Dept. to Host Musical Theatre Workshop

Teens in grades eight through 12 in Evansville and the surrounding area who are interested in theatre have the opportunity to participate in “The Muzical Works Project,” a musical theatre workshop sponsored by the Harrison High School Musical Theatre Department. The workshop, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, will include special guests from local dance studios, D’Alto Studios, Evansville Civic Theatre and the University of Evansville who will instruct sessions throughout the day. Teens will have the opportunity to enroll in classes in three types of dance, stage make-up, audition techniques, monologues and improvisation. There also will be a vocal master class and individual coaching will be available. The day will conclude with a free and informal program for parents in order to allow the teens to showcase what they learned.

Cost for the program is $10 for EVSC students and $15 for non-EVSC students.

IS IT TRUE that the CCO is sad to report that the Karges Furniture Company that began operations in Evansville in 1886 has laid off nearly the entire staff leaving only a skeleton crew to fill the final orders before ceasing operations?…Evansville has very few companies that are the world leader in their field and even though many local people could not afford it, Karges has supplied dignitaries, sheiks, and aficionados with high end hand-made furniture that was designed and made in Evansville for over a century?…in a day when local governments are in the business of handing out cash incentives to schemes and call centers it seems as though nothing could be done to save this city treasure of a legacy business?…we shall surely miss this business and wish the workers Godspeed in finding new employment?

IS IT TRUE that while there is sad news on West Maryland Street there are some reliable MOLES that tell the City County Observer that there are some details emerging from Mayor Winnecke’s choice on which developer should be the recipient of the Largesse of the City of Evansville when it comes to getting some corporate welfare?…that the recommendation will be that a 270 room hotel with a price tag of between $27 Million and $32 Million will be made by Mayor Winnecke?…the package will also include a STORAGE Building at a cost of $6 Million that should have been included in the Ford Center budget and has no business in the hotel or the Centre’s cost?…there shall also be two walk bridges that will cost in the neighborhood of $3.5 Million each included?…a parking tower with a price tag of $5 Million is also on the Valentine’s Day wish list?…street improvements in the range of $2 Million to $4 Million will be required to make all of these things work well together along with a maximum tax abatement of 10 years to the chosen developer?…the tab to the public to make this investment attractive to the chosen private developer is rumored to be in excess of $40 Million?…that is just about the exact price that former Mayor Weinzapfel announced in 2008 would be invested in a 4-Star hotel without public assistance if only the City of Evansville will build an arena?

IS IT TRUE that is not all that is being sought?…that whatever the equity investment is being proposed by the chosen developer that the taxpayers of Evansville are also going to be asked to grant a permanent subsidy that will guarantee a 10% – 13% return on investment for the private dollars invested in the downtown hotel project?…that with such a financial requirement on the table it is no wonder that Mayor Winnecke at this hour has not invited City Councilman John Friend, CPA to his office for a convincing session?…when a person with a keen eye for numbers looks this over the wheels on this bus are likely to explode before falling off?…it does not take a CPA to figure out that giving out incentives of over $40 Million for a hotel that will be worth $20 Million, guaranteeing an above market ROI, and handing the deed to the recipients of this government largesse is bordering on fiscal insanity?…the actions of Evansville on occasion make the financial actions in Washington DC look frugal?

Mayor Announces Plans for Berry Plastics’ Manufacturing Expansion and Creation of 115 New Jobs

(EVANSVILLE, IN) – At a news conference today, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, Vanderburgh

County Commission President Marsha Abell and Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville President
Deborah Dewey announced infrastructure plans that reaffirm the City, County, and State’s commitment
to implementing measures to ensure retention of current jobs and creation of new jobs within the
region.

In turn, Berry Plastics Corporation is investing approximately $33 million in its facilities in Evansville City
/ Vanderburgh County and adding approximately 115 professional, technical, and production
employees. Berry Plastics, which employs more than 1800 associates in Vanderburgh County and
approximately 15,500 worldwide, will add the 115 jobs locally over the next two years. It is anticipated
that, over the next 10 years, the City of Evansville/Vanderburgh County will receive a positive economic
impact in excess of $236 million as a result of the new jobs created and capital investment made by the
Company.

“Berry Plastics’ decision to invest more than $30 million to expand its Evansville-based operations and
add 115 new jobs is proof of the company’s continued commitment to our community. The hard work
and diligence by numerous City, County and State agencies made today’s announcement a reality, which
goes to show that even in a difficult economic environment, economic development is still possible
when parties work together for creative solutions,” said Mayor Winnecke.

“The best economic development tool an elected official can use to bring new businesses and jobs to an
area is to spotlight an outstanding company such as Berry Plastics, which not only operates in Evansville
and Vanderburgh County but has selected this area for expansion,” said Commissioner Abell.

To ensure reliable delivery of raw material required for manufacturing at 101 Oakley Street, the State of
Indiana has offered Berry Plastics Corporation a $400,000 grant towards the addition and upgrade of rail
infrastructure. As part of the rail improvement project, one parallel railroad track will be added to
enhance car capacity and switching options along Division Street. The City of Evansville also offered
Berry Plastics Corporation a $40,000 grant to use towards the rail infrastructure additions estimated to
cost in excess of $900,000. Berry Plastics will fund the remaining $460,000, which will improve the
delivery of raw materials in Evansville and ensure the retention of as many as 500 existing jobs.

Berry Plastics’ Oakley Street facility receives the majority of its raw material via the rail infrastructure on
Division Street, and solving logistics at this site were keys to the future of company operations.

“The current rail service to the Oakley Street facility is sufficient for today’s production needs. However,
the existing rail infrastructure would not be able to transport the additional raw materials associated
with an increase in production capacity,” explained Jon Rich, Chairman and CEO of Berry Plastics.

“We are extremely appreciative of the City, County and State officials who worked diligently with us to
develop and secure the infrastructure plans necessary to allow for growth at our Evansville facilities,”
added Rich. “The capital investment we are announcing today is in direct support of our strategic goal
of accelerating our innovative product development and the bringing to market of exciting new products
that provide solutions for our customers.”

In support of the creation of new jobs, the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County offered Berry
Plastics Corporation a 10-year Tax Phase-In on personal property investment. The State of Indiana also
offered Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) Tax Credits in the amount of $800,000.

“Retention and expansion of existing businesses like Berry Plastics continue to form the basis for so
much of our local economic growth,” said Growth Alliance President Deborah Dewey. “Berry Plastics
attracts and develops a highly skilled workforce, adding value to our community.”

IS IT TRUE that President of the Evansville City Council just appointed 6th Ward City Councilman, Al Lindsey as the council’s liaison for the Fire Department?…we congratulate Council President Robinson for making this bold political move that shall force the Fire Chief and Councilman Lindsey to work directly with each other for the betterment of the Fire Department?…it’s also time for other key Fire Department Administrators to begin to treat Mr. Lindsey with respect?…we expect Mr. Lindsey to return the favors?

IS IT TRUE being encouraged by many people in local government, we are happy to report that two capable public servants have reconciled their differences?…that our “Civic Center Moles” have reported that At-Large City Councilman Jonathan Weaver and 6th Ward City Councilman Al Lindsey have quietly exchanged the olive branches of peace with one another last week?…that we hear that the conversations between Mr. Weaver and Mr. Lindsey were open, direct, honest, and candid?…that we believe both Mr. Weaver and Mr. Lindsey possess the ability and skills to join together and improve Evansville’s quality of life?…we are glad Mr. Weaver and Mr. Lindsey buried the political hatchet and have agreed to move forward in a way as to unify the City Council and tackle some of the more pressing issues facing our city?

IS IT TRUE that one of our Civic Center moles informed us that she has been told, by reliable sources, that 5th Ward City Councilman and Finance Chairman John Friend, CPA has been approached to run for Mayor?… that this non-partisan group asked Mr. Friend permission to organize a political exploratory committee for Mayor in his behalf?…that they want to gauge public interest in Councilman John Friend as a candidate for Mayor of Evansville?…Friend asked them to re-approach him in the later part of the year for an answer?

IS IT TRUE that the now mostly quiet president of GAGE Debbie Dewey spoke before the City Council last night to present an annual summary of what is going on with the economic development arm of the City of Evansville?…Ms. Dewey seemed pleased to report that there had been commitments for 425 jobs to be created someday but that “Job growth in Southern Indiana has been slower than national averages for several years”?.. that 425 jobs per year only represents about 0.6% of the total jobs in the City of Evansville and does not account for the losses of a mounting number of small businesses due to the recession and other factors?…it is not clear if the 300 or so jobs that were verbally trumpeted when the Earthcare Energy deal was prematurely announced are included in the 425?…one dirty little secret that is not talked about much is the fact that the Earthcare Energy deal is not fully ended yet?…Ms. Dewey also mentioned the value of the sister city relationship with Osnabruck, Germany in an opportunity she is working and went on to make the comment of the night when she stated that “”We have to kiss a lot of frogs to find the prince,”?…paying homage to the upcoming trip to Amsterdam and Germany by Evansville’s first family may constitute a kiss but that kiss is not applied to any frog?

IS IT TRUE that the unemployment rate in Evansville has officially come down faster than the national average even though it is asserted that job growth here has been slower?…both of those stated facts are absolutely accurate?…there is only one way to see unemployment fall fast when job growth is lags the nation and that is for the number of people in the workforce to drop even faster?…there are two ways that the workforce shrinks?…those are moving away or dropping out by retiring early or going on disability are the ways to have those two statistical facts happen at the same time?…a shrinking population and a stagnant job market have been the hallmark of the local economy for half a century now?…the problems that drive this spiral are too big for kissing frogs to repair?
