UE Professor Presents Paper at International Conference on Inaugural Swiftposium
EVANSVILLE, IND. (02/14/2024) University of Evansville (UE) Professor Kristie Daugherty recently unveiled her groundbreaking paper titled “‘Rooting for the Anti-Hero’: Taylor Swift’s Lyrics and the Contemporary Female Protagonist” at the highly anticipated Swiftposium. Organized by scholars from six universities across Australia and New Zealand, Swiftposium marks the first international academic conference dedicated to the cultural phenomenon that is Taylor Swift.
With over 400 paper proposals received, Daugherty’s paper was among the select 130 chosen for presentation at the event, a testament to its academic rigor and innovative insights. Swiftposium hosted scholars from 78 academic institutions worldwide, representing diverse disciplines and perspectives at the University of Melbourne from Feb. 11 to Feb. 13.
Daugherty’s paper expands on her previous work discussing Taylor Swift in academic circles. She previously presented at a Taylor Swift conference at Indiana University. The Swiftposium further explored Swift’s impact on modern life, covering topics such as gender, fandom, popular culture, literature, and the music industry.
“It was an immense privilege to take part in the Swiftposium, delving into the profound influence Taylor Swift has on our culture,” remarked Daughtery. “This event served as a unique platform for scholars to analyze her societal impact. I feel deeply honored to engage in this collective exploration, exchanging insights with academics from across the globe.”

Art Exhibit to Celebrate Disability Awareness Month
 Advisory Board on Disability Services will hold an Art Exhibit during Disability Awareness MonthÂ
This March, the Evansville Advisory Board on Disabilities Services will celebrate Disability Awareness Month with an art exhibit at the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library.Â
The exhibit, whose theme is “Inclusivity: What does that mean to you?†will feature original artwork in any format, completed by a person(s) with a disability. Submissions must include the artist’s name, as well as a title and/or small description of the piece. All art also must be family-friendly; to accommodate all submissions, organizers are requesting that all artwork be small to medium in size.Â
Indiana celebrates Disability Awareness Month every March as an opportunity for students and the community to learn about people with disabilities.Â
On March 7, 2024, at 1:30 PM at Central Library, Mayor Stephanie Terry will present a proclamation declaring March as Disability Awareness Month in Evansville.Â

Submissions may also be dropped off at the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Human Relations Commission office located in the Civic Center Complex in suite 209. The deadline for entering the art exhibit is at the close of business on Monday February 26.Â
The mission of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Advisory Board on Disability Services is to provide guidance in matters concerning individuals with disabilities in Evansville. IU Dutchman van Westering Qualifies for Paris Games
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana swimming and diving junior Kai van Westering qualified for the Olympics Thursday (Feb. 15) while representing the Netherlands in the 200-yard backstroke at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Van Westering swam a 1:57.29 in prelims heats before upgrading his time to 1:56.91 in the semifinal. Both are under the Olympic Qualifying Time of 1:57.50. His seventh-place finish in the semis also qualifies him for his first World Championships final, which he’ll swim Friday.
Van Westering is in his second season for IU swim and dive program. He was a valuable member of Indiana’s Big Ten Champion team last season, scoring in all three events he raced at the conference meet.
The Paris Games will be a sort of homecoming for van Westering, who grew up in France but represents the Netherlands in competition as his father is Dutch.
USI presents “Teach Like a Rockstar” with Hal Bowman
The University of Southern Indiana Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education is offering a free professional development opportunity for local teachers, administrators and students with an interest in teaching on Wednesday, February 28 in Carter Hall, located in University Center West. The event will include a meet and greet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and a keynote presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. It is open to the public at no charge.
The keynote speaker, Hal Bowman, spent over two decades in the classroom before beginning his work helping tens of thousands of teachers and school leaders understand and shift classroom and campus culture. His work around school culture and its importance in creating the most effective environment for student success and teacher retention is unmatched.
His presentation, “Teach Like a Rockstar,†is a research-based, results-driven professional development event that provides educators with the most powerful tools, strategies and resources available for creating an extraordinary learning environment. Topics covered include building strong connections with students, creating student enthusiasm, transitioning from classroom management to classroom leadership, and ultimately, uncovering the rock star teacher that lies within and more.

 STORM COME BACK TO DEFEAT THUNDERBOLTS 3-1
Evansville, In.:  After heavily outplaying the Storm in the first 39 minutes of play, the Thunderbolts could not extend their 1-0 lead, and the Storm turned the tables by taking control back and scoring three consecutive goals to defeat Evansville 3-1 at Ford Center on Wednesday night.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Saturday, February 24th against the Peoria Rivermen, puck drop at 7:00pm CT.
Only 2:07 into the game, Matthew Hobbs scored unassisted to give Evansville a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbolts outshot Quad City 25-13 in the first two combined periods but could not find a way to extend their lead. With only 16 seconds remaining in the second period, Cole Golka scored a power play goal for Quad City to tie the game at 1-1 going into the third period. Only 57 seconds into the third period, Matt Ustaski scored off an Evansville turnover to put Quad City ahead 2-1, and the Storm wrapped up the scoring with an empty net goal from Michael Moran in the final minute as the Thunderbolts could not get their attack going again.
Hobbs scored Evansville’s lone goal, while Ty Taylor finished in goal with 25 saves on 27 shots.  The Thunderbolts and Storm meet again on Friday, March 1st at Ford Center.
