IS IT TRUE March 11, 2013

IS IT TRUE it has been pointed out to the City County Observer that the Courier Press recently reported on the Bond rating of the City of Evansville relative to the Ford Center?…this person just wanted to keep the people of Evansville informed that the Courier was comparing apple to oranges?… the Evansville Redevelopment Authority (ERA), which is totally separate from the City of Evansville, owns the Ford Center and issued the bonds that paid for the Ford Center?…the ERA then leases the Ford Center to the City?…during the audit process, the SBOA (State Board of Accountancy), will NOT be performing audit procedures concerning the ERA?… as such, should the City of Evansville encounter an adverse opinion due to the condition of the City’s records, the bond rating of the Arena will NOT be effected at all?… it was misleading to report, or insinuate that the Citizens of City have nothing to be concerned about regarding their bond ratings should we unfortunately receive less than a favorable audit opinion?

IS IT TRUE the Blue Angels that have been scheduled to perform at the Evansville Shriner’s Fest this summer have been cancelling shows across the country due to the budget cuts known as SEQUESTER?…we should know in a very short time if the Blue Angels will be coming to Evansville or not?…military shows like the Blue Angels always add to the crowd size in towns across the country and are seen as a welcome shot in the arm bringing tourist dollars to the towns they choose to perform in?…if these cities and towns had to foot the full cost to the American taxpayers for the performance they may be singing a different song?…it was reported yesterday that one Blue Angels performance uses about $100,000 just in jet fuel?…there are other costs associated with performing military planes too?…in terms of government spending that $100,000 is really the equivalent of 143 hammers that could be purchased at any hardware store for $3,500?…if SEQESTER starts our government on the path of sane spending it is worth it to miss things like the Blue Angels which while enjoyable are definitely not necessary to run the country and may well have been a wasteful indulgence for many years now?

IS IT TRUE speaking of the SEQUESTER the claims of jobs being lost because of reductions in planned spending are all over the map and in some cases designed to frighten the American people?…in truth there are some jobs supported entirely by government largesse that probably need to be eliminated?…let’s use the example of whomever is employed to make those $700 hammers and $500 toilet seats?…these jobs need to go away and the people doing these jobs need to be reassigned to something that serves the private sector or the government sector where pricing is not utterly insane?…it was President Obama’s right hand man Rahm Emmanuel who once said “never let a crisis go to waste”?…the SEQUESTER crisis if it really is one should be used to hit the reset button on government pricing?…it would serve our medical system that routinely has the nerve to bill patients and insurance companies up to $3 for a cotton ball to examine their pricing schemes as well?…if Obamacare is to work it will be fully dependent on sane pricing?…that government and medical services are the two most guilty industries in the United States when it comes to insanity of pricing?…the REAL WORLD of competitive enterprise would never ever tolerate such pricing?…that whatever the government does or regulates seldom works out well in the long run?

IS IT TRUE the CCO wishes to congratulate and celebrate the Indiana Hoosiers first outright Big Ten basketball championship in 20 years?…as this week’s conference tournaments play out Indiana is in a good spot to get a number one seed in March Madness along with Duke, Louisville, and #1 ranked Gonzaga?

REO SPEEDWAGON, STYX AND TED NUGENT
Last year’s debut of “The Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express” tour, recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the “Ten Hottest Summer Package Tours of 2012,” was such a huge success that Rock’s finest from the Midwest— REO Speedwagon, Styx and Ted Nugent—are teaming up again for another round of shows. To say that everyone on the tour is excited to get back out there would be an understatement, in their own words:
“Yo, wake up everybody! Winter is over, the snow is melting, the sun is coming out–it’s time for the second annual REO, Styx, Nugent springtime extravaganza. We had so much fun in 2012 we all decided to fire this ‘Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express’ thing up and do it again. Time to strap on our six strings, pack up the trucks and tour buses, get together with our best rock buddies and go out to have some big fun. See y’all soon.” – Kevin Cronin, REO Speedwagon (vocals, guitars, keyboards)
“Blazing vocal melodies and guitars, soaring arrangements steeped in Progressive Rock roots, heart touching ballads you know in your bones, and that’s just my DAMN YANKEES brother TED NUGENT I’m talking about! Wait until STYX and REO take the stage! You might need to take the next day off after riding this glorious train!” — Tommy Shaw, Styx (vocals, guitars)
“When you live the ultimate American guitar player’s dream, with the ultimate grinding band, performing the most intense fun songs in the world to the most enthusiastic audiences alive, every tour and every concert is an indescribable celebration. Styx and REO deserve me. Here we come again baby, like dogs in heat!” –Ted Nugent
“The Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express” tour racked rave reviews. “One would be hard pressed to find a tour line-up that can boast more combined top 40 hits and platinum recordings than that of Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and STYX…on this night, (the fans are) going to get their money’s worth.”–Craig Ross, Guitarinternational.com

Job retention addressed in Rockport, House budget

Last week marked the end to a highly productive first half of session. As we continue to work for the best interests of all Hoosiers, one of my main goals for the 2013 session is job creation. With that in mind, I think it’s fitting to highlight the work of the Hoosiers in our community that have been effective in keeping jobs here. A perfect example of this is the Rockport Power Plant located in Spencer County.

The Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M), a subsidiary of American Electric Power, reached an agreement in February that will allow I&M to use a different strategy at the Rockport Power Plant to meet the EPA’s requirements. Before this agreement was reached, I&M had filed requesting a dry scrubber on one of the two 1,300-MW coal-fired Rockport units in order to satisfy EPA requirements. The estimates for the dry scrubber project were $1.4 billion. The cost would have to be absorbed by the customers and would ultimately lead to a decrease in jobs.

Under the agreement reached, I&M will install technology on both 1300 MW Rockport units. The cost of installing DSI is less than one-fifth of the cost of a single unit and will meet all environmental regulations. This agreement helped the company not have to shut down other plants because of the high cost of the scrubber. Not only were jobs kept but 40 permanent jobs were added. The strategy will dramatically reduce the cost for the Rockport plant, saving I&M’s customer’s money and sustaining jobs.

I glad to see that they found a balanced solution to their situation. Similarly, the House is working towards a balanced budget this session that will keep Indiana on the path for economic growth. We will continue to prioritize job creation, workforce development, education, boosts the Hoosier economy and works to build and maintain Indiana’s infrastructure.

Another key component to the budget is protecting Indiana taxpayers. The budget plans to do this by maintaining healthy reserves, so taxes will not need to be raised later. Healthy reserves will keep essential government services running in the event of an economic downturn and will additionally help Indiana maintain its AAA credit rating.

When creating a budget, the first priority is realizing that you cannot spend more money than you take in. That same common-sense, conservative approach should apply to government. I am pleased to report that the biennial budget passed in the House last month does just that.

I have met with many Hoosiers from across the state who are working hard to make a better life for themselves. The Hoosiers of our community and our district inspire me – YOU are why I support the 2014-2015 Indiana budget. I will continue to support a balanced budget that protects all Hoosiers and will protect the prosperity of future generations to come.

CONGRESSMAN LARRY BUCSHON: WE CAN DO BETTER

(Washington, DC) –According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report released this morning, the U.S. unemployment rate edged down to 7.7% from 7.9% in January, while the economy added 236,000 nonfarm jobs. Congressman Larry Bucshon released the following statement regarding today’s report.

Congressman Bucshon (IN-08) states:

“The unemployment rate may have slightly decreased from last month, yet this number is virtually unchanged since September of last year. While I am encouraged that more Americans were able to find work last month, I know that we can do better.

“There are still 12 million Americans that have not found work, some have even given up the search for a job altogether. Many jobs are going unfilled and we need to do everything we can to better connect workers with the education and training they need to compete for available jobs. This week I voted to approve the SKILLS Act in the House Education and the Workforce committee to fix our nation’s broken job training system so that we can help provide those looking for work the skills and resources they need to find good paying jobs.”

BACKGROUND:

For the U.S. House Republicans Jobs Tracker, please click here.

Real unemployment, a measure that includes discouraged workers and those employed part-time who would rather work full-time, was 14.3 percent and the labor force participation rate was 63.5%.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The unemployment rate edged down to 7.7 percent in February but has shown little movement, on net, since September 2012.” The total number of unemployed Americans is 12 million. The number of long term unemployed (individuals unemployed for 27 weeks or longer) was at 4.8 million, which represents 40.5% of unemployed individuals.
