Known as country music’s “Gentle Giant” for his warm baritone and laid-back ways, Don Williams is a major country hitmaker and international ambassador. Scoring at least one major hit every year between 1974 and 1991, he had an impressive fifty-six chart records. Fifty of these reached the country Top Twenty, and forty-five made the Top Ten; seventeen went to #1. In 1978 he was CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, and his recording of “Tulsa Time” was ACM Single of the Year. In 1980, readers of London’s Country Music People magazine named him Artist of the Decade.

Don Williams, Volume One, his first album, appeared in 1972 on JMI Records. It contained several chart singles, including Williams’s self-penned “The Shelter of Your Eyes (#14, 1972) and Bob McDill’s “Come Early Morning” (#12, 1973) and “Amanda” (#33, 1973). Don Williams, Volume Two included Williams’s own “Atta Way to Go” (#13, 1973-74) and Reynolds’s “We Should Be Together” (1974), the singer’s first Top Five hit. Recordings like these established his style, noted for its mellow yet masculine vocals and often-pensive song material.
In 1974, Williams scored his first chart-topping record, Al Turney’s “I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me.” It launched a string of fifteen straight Top Ten hits, including songs by numerous top-tier writers: Wayland Holyfield’s “You’re My Best Friend” and “Some Broken Hearts Never Mend”; McDill’s “(Turn Out the Light and) Love Me Tonight,” “Say It Again,” and “It Must Be Love”; and Danny Flowers’s “Tulsa Time.” The singer’s winning streak also included the Holyfield-Williams composition “Till the Rivers All Run Dry” and the Williams originals “Lay Down Beside Me” and “Love Me Over Again.”
During the eighties and early nineties, Bob McDill continued to supply Williams with first-rate material, most notably the literary and evocative “Good Ole Boys Like Me.” Other hits came from leading songwriters such as Roger Cook (“I Believe in You” with Sam Hogin; “Love Is On a Roll” with John Prine), Dave Loggins (“We Got a Good Fire Goin'”), Rory Bourke and Mike Reid (“I Wouldn’t Be a Man”), and Dennis Linde (“Then It’s Love”; “Heartbeat in the Darkness” with Russell Smith).
As of 2010 the prolific Williams had released more than thirty-five albums. The Best of Don Williams, Volume II and The Best of Don Williams Vol. III have been certified gold, and I Believe in You has been certified platinum. His video collection Don Williams Live has attained gold status. After switching from JMI to ABC-Dot (1974-78), Williams moved in succession to MCA (1979-85), Capitol (1985-89), and RCA (1989-92). Later releases appeared on American Harvest, Giant, RMG, and Intersound/Compendia. Williams was one of the first country artists to make a music video, 1973’s “Come Early Morning.”

On February 23, 2010, the Country Music Association announced that Don Williams was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers belong to a special class of artists. A class comprised of those few acts that have sustained decades-long careers despite the restlessness of popular music’s audience.

They have scored hits in five different decades such as “American Girl,” “Refugee,” “The Waiting,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” And they have sold tens of millions of records along the way. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during their first year of eligibility and have garnered accolades and awards too many to mention. Through it all their uncompromising integrity has never wavered while their concert tours have become things of legend.

Tom Petty has said the Heartbreakers are first a live band. Critics have said they are one of the few great live rock ‘n roll bands still playing today. The audience spoke loudest of all in 2010 when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ last major North American tour was their most successful, attended by more people than ever before.

Most television viewers have seen at least part of a CSI or Law and Order episode. These shows seem to have spurred a new interest in law enforcement and forensics. For over 40 years the Indiana State Police have been giving young people an up close look at law enforcement through its youth camps program.

The three-day Respect for Law Camp is an exciting look at law enforcement for students entering 5th and 6th grades. Troopers and other police officers staff the co-ed camps and programs include spectacular demonstrations by Emergency Response Teams, Bomb Squads, Underwater Search and Rescue Teams and police dogs. Campers participate in recreational activities, make new friends and go home with a new respect for themselves and others.

Respect for Law Camp costs $125 and will be held at: University of Southern Indiana (June 13th-15th ), Hanover College (June 20th-22nd) Vincennes University (June 6th-8th), Anderson University (July 11th-13th), and Notre Dame University (June 27th-29th ).

Lions Law Camp gives students entering the 7th and 8th grades a behind the scenes look at the criminal justice system. The four-day co-ed camp offers a more advanced look at law enforcement through field trips, exciting demonstrations and motivating programs. Campers meet peers from around the state, participate in recreational activities and leave with a greater understanding of the police field. Law Camp costs $140 and will be held at: Vincennes University (June 12th -15th ) and Anderson University (July 10th-13th ).

Similar to the Indiana State Police Academy, Career Camp gives high school students an in-depth look at law enforcement. Campers conduct their own crime scene investigations, hear from defense attorneys, judges, and other experts in the criminal justice field, and watch exciting police demonstrations during the weeklong camps.

Career Camp, which is co-ed, allows students to make friends from around the state, participate in recreational activities and experience what the police academy is like. The camp will be held at: Vincennes University (July 7th -12th) and Trine University in Angola (July 14th-19th). The camps costs $225.

Scholarships are available to all camps. The camps are made possible through the support of the Indiana District Optimists, Indiana Troopers Youth Services, Jaycees, Lions Clubs of Indiana and many generous sponsors around the state.

It seems like we are constantly bombarded with advertising for various dietary supplements and herbal remedies – through TV ads, email spam and internet ads. Which ones really work and what can they offer you? The answers aren’t as simple as one might think nor are they easy to ferret out from the advertisements.
First and foremost, just because a supplement or over-the-counter remedy is available doesn’t mean that it is either effective, or safe. According to an article published on Med Page Today’s website April 15, 2013, over half of all class 1 (most serious) recalls in the US over the last 9 years involved dietary supplements. Most of those supplements were sexual-enhancement, body-building, or weight-loss aids, the article reported.
A branch of the National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NICCAM) has published some key points about dietary supplements on its website (www.nccam.nih.gov) These include:
• Dietary supplements contain a variety of ingredients, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or other botanicals. Research has confirmed health benefits of some dietary supplements but not others.
• To use dietary supplements safely, read and follow the label instructions, and recognize that “natural” does not always mean “safe.” Be aware that an herbal supplement may contain dozens of compounds and that all of its ingredients may not be known.
• Some dietary supplements may interact with medications or pose risks if you have medical problems or are going to have surgery. Most dietary supplements have not been tested in pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children.
• The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements, but the regulations for dietary supplements are different and less strict than those for prescription or over-the-counter drugs.
• Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.
So – which supplements are worthwhile and which ones are wastes of money? WebMD published an analysis a few years ago. The following is an excerpt:
Multivitamins – There is no harm in taking a multivitamin daily, but a better choice would be to eat a more nutritionally complete diet. Make certain that your multivitamin contains at least 100% of the recommended minimum daily requirement of all vitamins. Women who have undergone menopause and men do not need iron supplements. There is no benefit to taking megadoses of B vitamins or Vitamin C. Women who are in their reproductive years should take 0.5 mg of Folic acid daily according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Folic acid can protect against a rare type of nervous system birth defect in the unborn.
Meal replacements like Slim Fast® and Ensure® can supplement the diet for those who are elderly, ill or trying to lose weight. A better alternative for weight loss would be a nutritionally complete, calorie-restricted diet.
Sports nutrition – This broad category includes pills, powders and drinks. Among the ingredients are creatine, amino acids, protein formulas, and fat burners. Most experts believe that they can provide a small edge in muscle building and fitness if used over the long term. One should not expect dramatic results.
Calcium and Vitamin D – These elements are vital to bone health and are lacking in most US diets. Dairy is the best source of calcium but if you can’t tolerate dairy, a calcium supplement in the form of lactate or citrate can be helpful. Vitamin D is produced in the body in response to exposure to sunlight, but with the recognized cancer risk of sun exposure, a supplement is probably a good idea. Women should consume 1200-1400 mg of calcium daily either in the diet or as a supplement. Adults of all ages should consider taking 1000 International Units of vitamin D daily.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin – These are most often taken for arthritis and joint pain. A multi-center study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found no advantage in patients with knee pain; however a small subset of patients did find some relief. There are no known harmful effects of taking Glucosamine Chondroitin.
Fish oil – Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are cardio-protective and the basis for the American Heart Association’s recommendations to consume fatty fish twice weekly. For those who cannot consume this amount of fish, fish oil supplements are a good alternative. Be certain that the capsules contain 1000mg of DHA and EPA, the two important omega-3 fatty acids.
The listed products are the only ones which have been shown to have scientific validity. Other products like ginko-biloboa, Echinacea, elderberry, cider vinegar or any other of the many products found on the shelves at health food stores have either not been rigorously tested or have not shown favorable results in tests.
Almost all supplements contain the following statement: “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” These words merit your attention before purchasing or using any supplement. Always consult your primary healthcare provider before adding a supplement particularly if you are taking prescription medications.
