Officer Development Course Hosted by EFD

EFD

The Evansville Fire Department is hosting a Fire Company Officer Development Course this week at their headquarters. The week long course is being taught by Chief Rich Gasaway. Chief Gasaway is a resident faculty member at the National Fire Academy located in Emmitsburg Maryland. His Fire Officer Development Courses include classes for the fledgling Company Officer to Chief Officers that oversee large emergency scenes or manage departments. This class, the third Officer Development Course Chief Gasaway has conducted for EFD and neighboring departments, is not just a lecture but has hands-on components and uses scenario-based exercises to test an Officer’s ability to think under pressure and use “out of the box” reasoning. The class will continue through the week and conclude on Friday afternoon.

I have scheduled 9 AM, Thursday morning as an interview time, in our classroom. An “interesting” class exercise takes place about 9:30, which I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

MARCH OF DIMES DONATES SWINGS TO ST. MARY’S NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

0

st marys logo Each year, the March of Dimes honors top fundraisers by donating an infant swing to the local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of their choice. This year, both families have chosen the St. Mary’s NICU. There will be a dedication for these swings Thursday, April 4th at 11:00 a.m.
One of the top fundraising families is Erica and Daniel Richardson. Like 500,000 other babies a year, their first child, Cullen Lane, was born too soon. Cullen passed away at a NICU in Indianapolis just eight hours after he was born. When Erica became pregnant again four months later, specialists at St. Mary’s helped see her through her high risk pregnancy. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 37 weeks. The Richardsons decided to help other families by raising money for the March of Dimes, and last year they raised more than $5,000.
The other family is Don and Eura Licklyter of Jasper. They have been among the top local fundraisers for ten years, and in 2012 raised about $7,300 for the March of Dimes.
The 2013 Evansville March for Babies is set for Saturday, April 27th at Sunrise Park in Downtown Evansville. For more information, please visit marchforbabies.org

IS IT TRUE April 3, 2013

Parrots of Propaganda: Great Place to Raise Kids! Brawk
Parrots of Propaganda: Great Place to Raise Kids! Brawk

IS IT TRUE April 2, 2013 may just go down in history as the worst public relations nightmare that the City of Evansville has ever experienced?…it is not every day that any city can be placed among the 10 most miserable cities in America and have a political appointee of the redevelopment commission placed under federal indictment?…we are sure that places like Detroit have had such one-two punches land in a single day but for a medium sized city that fancies itself to be “a great place to raise kids” or even “having a good quality of life” as the Chamber and public officials like to parrot has endured such a double whammy in a single day?…the big difference in a perpetual hell hole like Detroit and cities like Evansville is that finally after 50 years of delusion of sunshine and rainbows by Mayor after Mayor, Detroit knows it is a hell hole?…perhaps if during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and up to the jailing of former Mayor Kwame Kirkpatrick, Detroit’s elected leaders would have been competent and honest about finding real solutions to their problems that Detroit would still be the Silicon Valley of the Midwest as it once was?…riding unicorns, dancing like Harold Hill of the Music Man down Main Street, and blowing the smoke of delusion up each other’s backsides will not create one job, will not repair one piece of crumbling infrastructure, and will not pull the wool over one site selectors eyes?…pursuit of the trappings of success with taxpayer dollars before establishing a fully functional infrastructure will not either?…these are things that make Evansville look dumb and promote the conditions that seem to keep landing us on the wrong end of national polls whether they are about obesity or misery?

IS IT TRUE that to be named the 8th most miserable place in America to live is a pretty rotten distinction?…even the City County Observer would not have placed Evansville that low?…each of us can think of at least 10 places that are much worse than Evansville to live?…our list would include, Detroit, Gary, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Dayton, Youngstown, St. Louis (city), Memphis (city), Camden, and Hoboken?…we could name more but the point is made that the bottom of the barrel is often defined by the content of the survey?…when examining the kinds of questions that Gallup asked when they were doing the misery survey what we found is that the questions were heavily weighted (no pun intended) toward healthy living and job satisfaction?…it should come as no surprise that Evansville would score poorly on healthy living with stubbornly high rates of smoking and drinking?…that with respect to job satisfaction Evansville is among a number of cities that has a low wage base among both blue collar and professional ranks and the upwardly mobile opportunities are sparse?…given the focus of the study Evansville obviously did score #8 from the bottom on the Gallup survey and for valid reasons?…given the questions we would not argue the results but we also would not make a silly statement like “Gallup could not tell us how they determined what cities made which list”?…such a statement is just another rainbow jumping, unicorn riding way of the delusional?…to avoid the fate of Detroit, Evansville needs leaders that will postpone the instant gratification of parks and parades to establish world class infrastructure, modern communications, and an excellent school system?…these are the things that will lead to a population that does not wallow in misery when pollsters come calling?

IS IT TRUE that some City Council members are calling for audits of the voting of Jay Carter on the Evansville Redevelopment Commission now that he has been indicted by the feds?…that may be a bit of a stretch from a group that has fought auditing the $127 Million Ford Center construction project like a cat fights a bath?…there is one curiosity surrounding the indictment of Mr. Carter that needs to be looked into?…that would be the manner in which the voting went down that resulted in the towing company that was named multiple time in the indictment beat out the longtime provider of towing services to the City of Evansville?…Hammerick’s provided towing services to the City of Evansville for many years and enjoys a great business reputation for both quality and value?…it would be interesting to know the whole story behind that choice and how the two voters that granted that contract would explain their votes?

Mayor Winnecke’s Remarks on Federal Indictment of ERC Member

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2, 2013

Statement from Mayor Winnecke re: Federal Indictment of Evansville Redevelopment Commission Member

“I’d like to recognize law enforcement, including the detectives from the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Narcotics Joint Task Force for working with the Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force, U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Internal Revenue Service on today’s indictments related to a suspected drug and money laundering operation in our community. I wholeheartedly agree with U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett that no one, including an appointed public official, is above the law and we look forward to resolution of this case. It is important to note, and reaffirmed by the U.S. Attorney, that this indictment did not name or associate the Evansville Redevelopment Commission with any of the suspected crimes. Questions about Mr. Carter’s service on the Commission should be directed to his appointing body.”

Hogsett Announces Formation of Federal-State Public Corruption Working Group

U.S. Attorney’s Office and Working Group to Aggressively Investigate, Prosecute Corruption Cases

U.S. Attorney’s Office

April 23, 2012

Southern District of Indiana
(317) 226-6333

INDIANAPOLIS—Joseph H. Hogsett, the United States Attorney, joined by law enforcement partners, announced this afternoon the formation of a Public Corruption Working Group. Charged with identifying and investigating criminal violations of the public’s trust, the Working Group comes at a time when the U.S. Attorney’s Office has pledged to make public corruption one of its top prosecution priorities.

“Today, I am proud to announce the formation of our Public Corruption Working Group,” Hogsett said. “This coordinated effort is historic, in terms of both the number of law enforcement agencies involved and as to the singular focus on such an important issue—the integrity of our public offices and officeholders.”

Working Group members include officers and agents from the following federal and state law enforcement agencies: Federal Bureau of Investigation, Indiana State Police, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Postal Service-OIG, Department of Transportation, and U.S. Secret Service.

“Our message has been consistent but bears repeating: it doesn’t matter what your politics are or who you know,” Hogsett noted. “If you violate the public trust, this working group will find you, will investigate you, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will then prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”

In late 2011, Hogsett announced an expanded focus on issues of government corruption and public integrity. In the last six months, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has concluded the prosecution of one Indianapolis City-County Councilor who was found guilty of soliciting a bribe and has begun the prosecution of another on charges of fraud. The office also recently prosecuted an elected official in Jackson County who defrauded the taxpayers of more than $300,000.

The working group consists of representatives from federal and state law enforcement agencies and will meet regularly to share information regarding public corruption investigations. This unique collaborative environment will allow for greater cooperation between agencies and is designed to facilitate faster, more effective investigations into any allegation of public corruption.

“Law enforcement works best when it works together,” said Major Ron Shoemaker of the Indiana State Police. “We’re pleased to be a part of this innovative new strategy and look forward to working with our federal partners.”

Prosecutions generated by the working group will be spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Senior Litigation Counsel, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bradley A. Blackington, and Sharon M. Jackson, who together are among the most experienced trial attorneys within the office.

Hogsett acknowledged the critical role that whistleblowers often play in prosecutions of public corruption. He urged anyone with information relating to criminal activity to contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office public corruption hotline at (317) 229-2443.

“Very often, public corruption prosecutions can be traced back to one anonymous tip,” Hogsett added. “We encourage anyone with knowledge of such behavior to contact the working group through this hotline.”
