On May 17th, the Evansville Police Department was made aware of a complaint lodged with the EVSC Coordinator for Safety and Security. The complaint alleged that an EPD officer committed a battery against a student while working off-duty at an EVSC school.

A criminal investigation into the incident commenced immediately. The investigation did not result in any criminal charges being filed because the student’s mother told investigators she did not want to press charges. The mother did, however, file a complaint with the Evansville Police Department Internal Affairs Investigator.

An Internal Affairs investigation commenced at once and has been completed. The findings of the investigation have resulted in disciplinary recommendations from Chief Billy Bolin to the Police Merit Commission. The recommendations include suspension without pay for 21 days and that the Police Merit Commission consider dismissal of the officer. The Police Merit Commission can affirm Chief Bolin’s recommendations or implement lesser discipline. The Police Merit Commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, June 10, 2013, at 2:00 pm.

Two Evansville men were arrested after an active meth lab was found in an east side home Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators from the Meth Suppression Unit went to 11 S. Welworth after receiving a tip that 20 year old Christopher Thomas was manufacturing meth at the house. As officers pulled up to the house, they saw several people arguing in the front yard.
When the investigators tried to intervene, Thomas fled from them. Several other people were detained, including the homeowner, 37 year old Jasen Yoder. While officers were searching for Thomas, a resident in the 200 block of S. Thomas called 911 about a man in their garage. Officers arrived and found Thomas hiding in a trash can in the garage. He was arrested after a brief struggle.
During the investigation at the house on Welworth, officers found an active one-pot meth lab and other items commonly used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. Yoder told officers his two children lived with him in the home, but were with a grandparent at the time. CPS was notified and the Grandparent kept the children.
Thomas was arrested for Manufacturing Meth and Resisting Law Enforcement. Yoder was arrested for Manufacturing Meth and Neglect of Dependent.

EPD Activity Report: May 22, 2013

One of the great things about living in America is the American Spirit and the willingness of people to come to the aid of others during tragic events. The recent tornadoes in Oklahoma have already brought volunteers to the area and others will certainly follow. Still others unable to travel to Oklahoma will be very generous by donating money, clothing, and other needs to assist with the relief efforts. While such tragedies oftentimes will bring out the best in most people, still there are those few who will take advantage of the misfortune of others for personal gain. Hoosiers should be aware of people taking the opportunity in light of the recent catastrophic events in Oklahoma to play on the generosity of those willing to help out monetarily. Citizens are cautioned to be skeptical of those going from door-to-door or making individual phone calls to residents claiming to be collecting for tornado relief. If you are contacted by someone asking for donations, ask questions to determine whether or not your contribution will actually go to the tornado relief efforts. Ask the person collecting for credentials, what organization they represent, if there is an address donations can be sent, etc. Ask the person if they have a business card with a website or other information that can be verified through other reliable sources such as the Better Business Bureau or the Attorney General’s Office. If you are approached and feel someone is trying to scam you try to get as much information as possible such as a name, description of the person, description of the vehicle including color, make, and license number if possible then contact local police, sheriff, or your nearest Indiana State Police Post.

The best way to contribute to the relief efforts is to donate money and other needed articles through known legitimate organizations such as the American Red Cross or through local churches collecting for tornado relief. Be aware, be vigilant, and don’t get scammed.
