Avoiding Wrinkles, or Worse.

By

Roy M. Arnold, MD

Summer is upon us, or soon will be. That means outdoor activities will be plentiful. That also means exposure to the blazing sun while gardening, golfing, playing sports or just lounging. It is very important for your skin’s health that exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning beds be limited as much as possible. You might think, “Wait, I thought a tan was supposed to be healthy?” The facts are that exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light contributes to most of the common skin maladies that plague us all including fine and coarse wrinkles, freckles, age spots, sagging skin, dilated blood vessels, precancerous growths and skin cancer.

If you weren’t already aware of it, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US accounting for about 2.5 million cases per year. One of the types of skin cancer, melanoma can be deadly. There are about 60,000 cases of melanoma per year accounting for 9000 deaths. The single most common risk factor for melanoma is sun exposure, particularly among fair-skinned individuals or people who have had severe cases of sunburn. Many years may elapse between the original injury and the development of malignancy. Melanoma usually begins as a pigmented spot that is irregular in shape, irregular in color and about the size of a pencil eraser. Many melanomas occur on the back or the back of the legs where it is hard to check the progress. Any suspicious skin lesion that shows these characteristics should be promptly evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Other types of skin cancer, though less dangerous, can still cause problems if not treated promptly. They usually occur on the face, arms, or shoulders although they can occur virtually anywhere. These can present as a scaly patch that doesn’t itch and doesn’t go away. They may develop ulceration and may have rolled edges around the ulcer. In the early stages, removal is usually curative. Make a habit of checking your skin monthly all over in a full length mirror so that you become familiar with any moles or blemishes. Any spots that appear suspicious should be observed for changes and evaluated further by a health care professional.

OK, now what? How does one go about preventing the kind of damage we’re talking about here? First and foremost is to take protective measures when going outside, even on cloudy days. Wear sunglasses with total UV protection, a hat with a brim, long sleeves and cover pale skin. Use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and reapply every 2 hours. Sunscreen can be very irritating to the eyes, so avoid using it near your eyes and wash your hands after applying. Using a sunscreen that also contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide can improve UV protection. Avoid sun exposure entirely when the rays are most intense, between 10am and 3pm. Make certain children are covered and protected when playing outdoors. Limit their sun exposure to 2 hours maximum per day. Above all avoid the use of tanning beds. If you must be tan, use a topical tanning product.

If you already have sun-damaged skin, besides preventing further damage by limiting sun exposure, what can be done about wrinkles and spots? Many dermatologists suggest using a moisturizing cream

that contains antioxidants like vitamins C and E plus retinol. It’s not necessary to spend lots of money on these, the drugstore brands are usually just as good as the $49.95 Department store brands.

Using an exfoliant before bed can help rejuvenate skin cells and stimulate collagen production. Sometimes preparations containing alpha-hydroxy acids can be useful in stimulating new growth, however they make the skin even more sensitive to damage from UV rays. Age spots may respond to treatment with an over-the-counter cream containing hydroxyquinolone. If your budget permits and you are so inclined, professionally administered laser treatments or injections like Juviderm® or Restylane® can improve facial appearance. No matter what method you select be realistic about your expectations. Nothing will make you look like a teenager again.

One final word – exposure to sunlight has one beneficial effect. It stimulates skin cells to produce vitamin D which is essential for bone health. A survey performed in 2005 found an overall prevalence of vitamin D deficiency of 41% among otherwise health US adults. The highest rate of deficiency was among those who were obese, Black or Hispanic. Given that there are few really good food sources of vitamin D (one would have to eat a can of tuna daily to meet the minimum requirement) most people should consider taking a supplement of 1-2000 units daily. The capsules can be found in the supplement aisle of any drugstore and are inexpensive.

Have fun this summer, but take precautions. Wear sunglasses, hats, protective clothing and sunscreen.

* TICKETS ON SALE THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 7TH AT 10AM! *
WKDQ is proud to announce Lynyrd Skynyrd coming to the Ford Center in Evansville on Thursday, August 1st. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday, June 7th at 10am.

Legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd returns with a fiery slice of Southern style guitar rock heaven in Last of a Dyin’ Breed, their newest release on Roadrunner/Loud & Proud Records due August 21, 2012. This is the kind of record guaranteed to feed the needs of the multi-generational Skynyrd Nation, and continue the renewed vigor the band exhibited with their last album, 2009’s God & Guns.

For the passionate, longtime fans of the band, this is Skynyrd at the top of their game, complete with instantly memorable songs, more hooks than a tackle box, and a blistering three-guitar attack at full power. From the raging guitars of the title track and the pounding, funky homage to local talent in “Home Grown” to the mind-blowing “Honey Hole,” Lynyrd Skynyrd sound like young bucks having one hell of a good time, which, regarding the latter, founding member Gary Rossington says is very much the case.

Skynyrd has recorded an album that continues to build on the legacy that began over 35 years ago in

Jacksonville, Florida. Joining them in the studio and on the road are new bassist Johnny Colt (Black Crowes, Train) guitarist Mark “Sparky” Matejka (a “Nashville cat, just a pickin’ fool,” according to Rossington), and keyboardist Peter Keys, who replaced Powell on the God & Guns tour.

County recorders will join Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller to announce a series of lawsuits being filed against companies using misleading mailers to offer copies of property deeds for fees as high as $89.

County recorder offices across the state and the Attorney General’s office have received complaints from consumers who believe the government-like notices are legitimate invoices. Property deeds – which are usually one to two pages – are public records and county recorders can provide copies for free or at a nominal cost, often times a $1 per page.

Evansville Water and Sewer Utility submits final sewer overflow control plan to EPA Mandated sewer improvement plan now awaits federal feedback and approval

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On Friday, May 31, 2013, the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) submitted the City of Evansville’s comprehensive, federally mandated integrated overflow control plan (IOCP) to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Justice and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Under the federal consent decree, approved by a federal court in June 2011, EWSU’s original deadline for the final IOCP was Nov. 30, 2012. However, in 2011, while EWSU was collecting sewer-flow data, Evansville experienced the wettest year on record. To ensure the plan was built based on more typical conditions, EWSU asked for another six months to collect additional data and right-size system improvement plans, extending the deadline to May 31, 2013.

State and federal regulators will review and respond to Evansville’s IOCP over the next several months.

EWSU’s plan is a 28-year, $540 million program, called Renew Evansville, which will significantly upgrade Evansville’s sewer system infrastructure, improve operations and reduce water pollution. Projects will address combined sewer overflows, and overflows and backups in the separate sanitary sewer system. Combined sewer overflows occur when stormwater and sanitary wastewater exceed the capacity of the combined sewer infrastructure, resulting in sewage being dumped into the Ohio River and Pigeon Creek. “This plan is the culmination of years of work with engineers, Utility staff and the Renew Evansville citizens advisory committee. After hearing and collecting public comment from the Utility’s ratepayers, we are responding to state and federal regulators with a plan that outlines effective, fitted and financially viable solutions to improve Evansville’s sewer system and reduce pollution into our waterways caused by combined sewer overflows,” said Allen Mounts, director of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility.

In balancing meeting EPA regulations and affordability of the plan, EWSU has proposed a 28-year plan that aims to capture 92 percent of wet weather flow in the combined sewer system. The total cost of the plan is $540 million. The Utility is proposing a 28-year implementation schedule to help keep rates down as much as possible, ensuring rates for in-city customers do not exceed 2 percent of Evansville’s median household income.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke added, “The diligence and effort the Utility has put into this plan is commendable. The City strives to reach an agreement that complies with federal mandate to clean up our waterways and is right-sized in cost and scale to minimize financial burdens on ratepayers.”

The plan, along with more information about Renew Evansville, is available online at www.RenewEvansville.com.

IS IT TRUE June 3, 2013

11
Mole #3 Nostradamus of Local Politics
Mole #3 Nostradamus of Local Politics

IS IT TRUE that the City County Observer allowed someone to post a few police reports back in late January that was apparently not completely familiar with the process?…the consequences of this have been that the archives of the EPD Activity Reports has not been presenting any reports since January?…this was all fixed over the weekend by removing one character of code that should never have been there?…our archives are working fine now and we apologize to our readers for the long drought?…HTML is not a very forgiving programming language?

IS IT TRUE that this weekend amid the thunderstorms we were all made aware of yet another case of alleged neglect on the part of the City of Evansville Housing Authority and this one has to do with the conditions of a public housing project called the Schute Apartments?…it seems as though an elderly resident who worked his whole life at Whirlpool who is living there invited a camera person in to see the slovenly way the maintenance on this old project tower was being conducted?…pathological neglect of course is a way of life in the government of Evansville and this building is not the exception?…Schute Apartments joins the growing list of Mesker Amphitheatre, countless parks, over 50 ball fields, roads, corroded water pipes, and of course the $815 Million sewer issue?…being a negligent slop hog must rub off as there are still over 10,000 houses that are so dilapidated that they need over $100,000 worth of work to even be habitable?…that amounts to a hidden and little talked about BILLION DOLLAR REPAIR NEED due to private citizens following the lead of their local government when it comes to taking care of what they have?

IS IT TRUE if things are not drastically changed with respect to taking care of things this will not stop?…Roberts Stadium was basically starved to death when it comes to maintenance so that the cameras would make it look worse than it was?…looking into the crystal ball we see a day in the not so distant future when even the 40 rental front door pride homes will be rotting down from neglect as well?…sloth is one of the seven deadly sins and our local government along with some of the private sector is clearly guilty of sloth?

IS IT TRUE that City Council Attorney Scott Danks is representing a couple of people in a class action lawsuit against Old National Bank for allegedly being clever and tricky when it comes to maximizing the fees collected for overdrafts on checking accounts?…the bit of code that has been used by banks all over the country to honor checks daily from the highest amount to the lowest amount for the purpose of charging as many overdraft fees as possible was developed in Southern California in the late 1990’s by a former co-worker of CCO editor Joe Wallace?…it was rapidly adopted by banks across the country to mine as many fees as possible from their customers who tend to overdraw their accounts?…overdraft fees have become one of the most lucrative profit centers for ONB and other banks?…one would be hard pressed to find a bank that does not practice this sneaky and somewhat usury practice?…we shall watch this class action suit with a high level of interest as it could grow to other banks, it could result in much damage to the century old reputation of ONB and result in a settlement, or it may go to court dragging ONB through the mud for a long time to determine just how legal this technique is?

IS IT TRUE the failed consolidation effort supported by the Winnecke Administration with cheerleading encouragement coming from local mainstream media is now being acknowledged as in the minds of the people interested in subsidizing a downtown convention hotel?…the reckless way the City Administration has been trying to spend money has validated the NO votes of many of those who cast them as a way to keep the irresponsible paws of the City of Evansville out of the pockets of the people who choose to live in the County?

IS IT TRUE there is a local business development opportunity that may pass Evansville by if entrepreneurs and the capital to back them is not established and established fast?…the shale gas revolution began only a few years ago and already employs 1.5 million people and is expected to grow to 4 million by the year 2020?…as with coal, the Tri-State is right in the middle of some serious shale gas that is extracted by a technique often called hydraulic fracking?…coal is on the downswing due to federal regulations and cost competitiveness, manufacturing is continuing to dry up, but shale gas is an opportunity that Evansville and the surrounding towns can take advantage of to rebuild the employment base?…if there had been more time spent on setting up a functional angel investment fund and leveraging the tech transfer agreement signed by GAGE in 2008 and touted by candidate Winnecke as crucial than has been spent on nonsense like Earthcare, chicken fat videos, and brainstorming for dog parks, Evansville may have been on the leading edge of this new energy technology?…whether it is from arrested development or from simply having a twisted sense of priorities Evansville is once again behind the eight ball on a leading edge economic opportunity?
