The Evansville Police Department will be presenting its 40th “Citizen’s Academy” April 2 through May 21th, 2013. The Academy sessions will run from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. each Tuesday for 8 weeks.

The goal of the Citizens’ Academy program is to give the members of the community an inside look at the various units of the police department and to create better understanding and communication between citizens and police through education.

This is an opportunity for the citizens of the community to know more about the men and women who are protecting their community and why they make certain decisions. The Academy also presents an opportunity for the citizens to voice any comments or concerns directly to the Department.

The participants will be able to ride along with officers as they drive an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC). This course will be a simulation of officers involved in a vehicle pursuit. The trainers will explain some of the tactics and techniques that officers use when they are pursuing a fleeing subject in a real life situation.

Members of the department will be instructing each session and will be covering topics relevant to the units in which they work. Some of the Topics to be covered in the Academy are the K-9 Unit, Firearms, SWAT, Crime Scene, Narcotics Unit, Sex Crime Unit, Domestic Violence Unit and Street Gang Task Force.

Registration Now Taking Place and Information Session Planned

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Virtual Academy has expanded its offerings from high school curriculum to now offer curriculum for kindergarten through eighth grades. Enrollment is now taking place and the EVSC Board of School Trustees have approved fees for those who apply after the September 13 enrollment deadline.

The EVSC Virtual Academy will utilize Compass Learning software for full-time students and for blended instruction in K-8 schools. Already in place for high school students is the Apex online curriculum. While there will be no registration or tuition fee for full-time students from both inside Vanderburgh County and outside who enroll prior to the official September enrollment date; there will be a $50 registration fee and a $50 tuition fee per month of enrollment for those enrolling after that time.

Compass Learning is an industry leader and has a long history of working with elementary and middle school curriculum and first introduced computer curriculum in the 1980s. The curriculum meets Common Core standards and will provide reports and data for students, teachers, and parents working with home school options. The high school Virtual Academy began during the summer of 2010 and has seen tremendous success rates of completion and expansion to now offer Advanced Placement courses.

An Information Session is planned on April 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center, located at 1901 Lynch Road.

The Hoosier-made Highlander named Consumer Reports’ Midsized SUV “Top Pick” for 2013

(Washington, DC) – Consumer Reports recently named the Toyota Highlander, made in Princeton, Indiana, the 2013 “Top Pick” for Midsized SUVs.

Established in 1996, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana employs over 4,000 Hoosiers.

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation elementary and K-8 schools will host kindergarten orientation meetings on Tuesday, April 2, with the exception of Lincoln School, whose session will be April 9, from 11 a.m. to noon

Parents/guardians will have the opportunity to enroll students in kindergarten if they haven’t already done so, and receive additional information regarding kindergarten, meet school staff, ask questions and share information about their children.

Children should be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2013, to enroll in kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year. To enroll, parents or legal guardians will need to be present and provide a copy of the child’s legal birth certificate (hospital certificates cannot be used) at the time of enrollment.
