REPORT: INFLATION CRISIS HURTING HOOSIER HOUSEHOLDS

0

WASHINGTON – Today, the Joint Economic Committee released inflation reports for all 50 states. Indiana’s report found Hoosiers are still struggling under the weight of President Biden’s inflation crisis.

President Biden this week released his proposed “budget,” a $7 trillion+ proposal that would put us on the path to $52 trillion in debt.

“Hoosiers don’t need economists to tell them that everything has gotten more expensive since President Biden started his historic inflation bomb spending spree, but the numbers are staggering,” said Senator Mike Braun. “I’ve been the loudest Senator warning about what this spending would do to Hoosier household budgets, and I’ve been proud to vote against the Biden spending binge every time.”

Here are the key findings from the JEC Indiana Report:

  • Using the February 2024 Consumer Price Index data release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) State Inflation Tracker estimates that the average household in Indiana is paying $876 more per month to purchase the same basket of goods and services as in January 2021.

  • Cumulatively, the average Indiana household has spent $20,974 more due to inflation since January 2021.

  • Compared to one year earlier, the average Indiana households needs to spend $147 more per month to maintain the same standard of living.

And the key findings on increases in household food expenses, shelter expense, energy expenses, and transportation expenses:

  • Compared to January 2021, the average household in Indiana is spending $143 more on food per month. This is $19 more each month than one year ago. Cumulatively, the average household in Indiana has spent $3,164 more on food due to inflation since January 2021.

  • Compared to January 2021, the average household in Indiana is spending $169 more on shelter per month. This is $57 more each month than one year ago. Cumulatively, the average household in Indiana has spent $3,078 more on shelter due to inflation since January 2021.

  • Compared to January 2021, the average household in Indiana is spending $91 more on energy per month. This is $9 less each month than one year ago. Cumulatively, the average household in Indiana has spent $3,751 more on energy due to inflation since January 2021.

  • Compared to January 2021, the average household in Indiana is spending $252 more on transportation per month. This is $19 more each month than one year ago. Cumulatively, the average household in Indiana has spent $8,064 more on transportation due to inflation since January 2021.

UE women’s basketball opens Hoops in the Heartland with Illinois State matchup

The Purple Aces head into the postseason as the 12th seed

MOLINE, Ill. – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team begins the postseason on Thursday afternoon in the Quad Cities.
The Aces get a new slate with the start of Hoops in the Heartland on Thursday afternoon. UE will play the Illinois State Redbirds on March 14 as the 12th seed. This is Evansville’s first time as the 12th seed since the Missouri Valley expanded to 12 teams last season. The Aces have been the 10th seed on six occasions when the tournament expanded to 10 in 2006. UE has won a game as the
final seed at Hoops in the Heartland, a 61-59 overtime win over Illinois State in 2016.

The Redbirds finished the regular season with a 20-10 overall record and a 13-7 MVC record to earn the fifth seed at Hoops in the Heartland. Illinois State is led into the postseason by three players, graduate forward DeAnna Wilson, junior forward Kate Bullman, and senior guard Maya Wong. Wilson and Wong lead the team in points per game with both in double figures while Bullman leads the team in rebounds (8.0), blocks (2.1), and minutes played (30.7).

For the fourth time in Missouri Valley Conference play, Evansville outrebounded its opponent in the team’s regular-season finale against UNI. The Aces pulled down 39 rebounds to the Panthers 34. UE particularly shined under the offensive glass with 13 o-boards compared to UNI’s eight. Evansville was led on defense by freshman Nevaeh Thomas with 12 rebounds. Thomas was the only Ace to score in double figures against the Panthers with 19 points for her 10th team-leading game.
In her return to action after a month away from the court, graduate center Barbora Tomancova recorded her 5th double-double of the season. Tomancova had 11 points and 10 rebounds in her return to the Aces while playing 23 minutes versus Drake. On Tuesday afternoon, Tomancova was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team. Tomancova currently has a 4.0 cumulative GPA while pursuing her master’s degree in health services administration.

USI Baseball Notes:

Archuleta gets 700th win. USI Head Coach Tracy Archuleta reached 700 career wins after the Eagles defeated Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday.

USI reaches .500 with four-game winning streak. The USI Screaming Eagles have reached the .500 mark for the first time in 2024 after winning their last four games. USI is hitting .342 as a team during the winning streak, while the hurlers have a 4.50 ERA in the four games and 36.0 innings of work.

Longest winning streak since 2022. USI’s four-game winning streak is the team’s longest since the Eagles won four at the end of the 2022 season and opened with a win to start the 2023 campaign. The five-game streak featured a sweep of the University of Indianapolis to end 2022 and started last year with a win over Western Illinois University.

Mock, Tachioka, & Ebest lead USI during winning streak. USI junior catcher Logan Mock leads USI during the winning streak, hitting .600 (6-10) with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and five RBIs. Senior infielder Austin Tucker and senior outfielder Ren Tachioka have driven in a team-best eight RBI and seven RBI, respectively, during the four-game stretch. Tachioka is second in batting average behind Mock with a .600 mark (10-18).

Eagles are 4-1 on first half of road swing. The Eagles are 4-1 in the first half of the nine-game road swing, hitting .307 as a team and posting a 4.09 ERA on the mound. USI also is averaging 7.6 runs per game, while their hosts are averaging 4.6 tallies per game.

Junior right-hander Tyler Hutson has a 1.80 ERA out of the bullpen, posting a team high two saves and 11 strikeouts in five innings of work.

USI under Archuleta. The Eagles are in their 18th season under Head Coach Tracy Archuleta, who has led the Eagles to two NCAA Division II national championships (2010, 2014) in his 17 years at the helm. He also has been recognized as the Division II ABCA National Coach of the Year twice (2010, 2014); the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year five times (2007, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018) and the GLVC Coach of the Year twice (2011, 2014) since taking over the program in 2007. He also is the winningest coach in the history of the program with 552 victories in 17-plus years.

First series sweep since 2022. The Eagles three-game sweep of Bellarmine University Sunday and Monday was the first series sweep since USI took four from the University of Indianapolis to end the 2022 season.

Taking the long way home. The Eagles are in the middle of playing 14 of 17 games away from the USI Baseball Field.

USI predicted 8th in 2024 OVC. The USI Screaming Eagles are predicted to place eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2024.

WKU, which has won six of its last seven games, visits Southeast Missouri State University Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before hosting USI.

USI vs. WKU. WKU leads the all-time series with USI, 8-2, and have won the last four meetings, including both games in 1988 (9-6, 4-2). The last time USI defeated WKU in baseball was in 1981, 8-7.
