IS IT TRUE August 1, 2013

IS IT TRUE that a former high ranking State of Indiana official has resigned from his position in the wake of allegations of changing the grade earned by a charter school from a C to an A?…the players in this recent scandal are not from Evansville and have no ties to Information Technology assessment but the allegations are quite similar?…former Indiana Schools Superintendant, Tony Bennett has resigned from his appointed position reporting to the Governor of Florida in the wake of the alleged grade changing that is said to have occurred during his time in Indiana?…Mr. Bennett asserts his innocence and no criminal charges have been filed but even the allegation of changing a grade for a crony has driven him from his position?…we will be interested to see how this plays out and do support accountability for those who cover the tracks of their cronies by deceiving the public when it comes to earned grades of any kind from education to IT assessment?

IS IT TRUE there is a new Facebook page that has been set up by some Evansville people that is quite amusing?…the site is called “Scooter People of Evansville” and features odd uses of scooters as primary transportation and asks readers to “caption” the pictures?…one of the funniest pictures shows a fellow pulling a canoe with a scooter and appears to be on North First Avenue?…this is patterned after the free entertainment website called www.peopleofwalmart.com that features all sorts of zany characters that shop at WalMart stores across the country?…that “Scooter People of Evansville” has collected 4,500 likes in its short time in existence?

IS IT TRUE that the last several days of having reviewed the contents of both the April 8th McGladrey study and the July version of the McGladrey study has led the CCO to wonder just what checks and balances have been in place over the last several years with respect to the IT solutions implemented by the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County?…one would expect that there would be a standing committee or even a commission established of competent people to report to elected officials on the performance of the IT solutions implemented AND more importantly to chart a strategic course for future upgrades?…given the budget and importance of IT in the operation of a city it would be astounding if there has never been any such oversight group formed?…this is a subject of interest that we are going to ask some questions about?

IS IT TRUE that IT solutions may not be the only part of local government that needs its governance reviewed for competency?…the impact that the City and County have on local surrogate organizations that were set up to be at arm’s length like Evansville Brownfields, GAGE, and the CVB all could use a third party assessment of just how exposed local government could be by exerting an undue amount of influence making these entities “alter egos” of local government or even certain elected officials?…the McGladrey studies results may just be the catalyst to investigate the efficacy of each and every thing the City of Evansville has influence over?…it is sort of comical for a City that has dilapidated sewers, pot holes galore, needles in the parks, but continues to spend money like a drunken sailor could be granted much influence over anything?

IS IT TRUE it is time for the people of Evansville to force the Office of the Mayor to operate in a transparent manner and to honor the separation of powers between the Mayor and the City Council?…the time for errors and buffoonery like Earthcare Energy, the McCurdy debacle, the Executive Inn dilemma, the $603k parking lot, McGladreyGate, and the recent controversy over crosses on the riverfront where a sneaky tactic initiated by local government led to an ACLU lawsuit that the City of Evansville lost hands down?…there has just been too much utter incompetency to tolerate?…we are interested to see if the people of Evansville are interested enough to do anything about it?

Brown Bag Performance

Print The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will be having the Dixielanders perform for our Brown Bag Series on August 7, 2013. The performance will begin at noon and it is encouraged to bring your lunch and a friend. The Arts Council’s BSF Gallery is located at 318 Main St. in downtown Evansville and all Brown Bag Performances are free to the public. This will be the final performance for the Summer Series. The Brown Bag Series will begin again in October 2013 and will continue weekly until April 2014.

 

This six-member Dixieland Jazz Band featuring David Matthews,drums; Kenny Horn, tenor sax; Larry Eifler, clarinet; Glen Katterhenry, trumpet; John Wittenbraker, tuba; & John Sakel, trombone is sure to please. Piano player, Prudy Moore will be accompanying the band during their performance. The Dixielanders will be taking us back to yesteryear with the famous Dixieland sounds from the early to mid 1900s.

Sen. Becker Honored by League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Southwestern Indiana announce State Sen. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) as the 2013 recipient of the “Making Democracy Work” award.
Becker received the honor for “outstanding service at the state level” on behalf of Southwest Indiana women and families.

 

“What a tremendous honor to be recognized by such an influential and meaningful organization in our community,” Becker said. “I am very grateful for the positive legislation that’s come out of the General Assembly over the years to promote women’s health and other needs, but forever indebted to local leaders, like those on the League of Women Voters, who fuel an informed and active citizenry necessary to make these advancements.”

 

During the 2013 session of the General Assembly, Becker advanced legislation to improve breast cancer screenings, promote new technologies in health care and increase funding for the University of Southern Indiana.

 

League president, Roberta Heiman, praised Becker for her leadership of more than 30 years.

 

“She is an example that women in public office do make a difference,” Heiman said.  “Senator Becker has been a steadfast advocate for health care and other services for women and children, the elderly and veterans, at the same time as providing leadership on bills dealing with transportation, higher education and other issues.”

Breaking the Cycle of Addiction:
The Evansville Police Department Meth Suppression Unit and the Vanderburgh County Prosecutors Office have teamed up to break the cycle of drug addiction in families in our community.
This week, 20 kids have been invited to attend a camp at USI. The “My Goals Camp” is designed to help them overcome some of the challenges associated with being raised by parents that are battling drug addiction. Most of the kids come from homes where one or both parents have been arrested for meth charges.
The camp is a chance for us to reach out to these kids and show them they are not forgotten or alone. The activities for the campers are designed to empower them to make positive choices and provide them with positive influences in their lives.

Police trying to identify theft and assault suspect

Evansville Police are trying to identify a man that stole merchandise from the Eastland Mall JC Penny store and assaulted the loss prevention officer when she tried to detain him. The incident happened at 1:30pm on July 23rd. Video from the store captured images of the suspect. The suspect is a white male, 5’5″-5’9″ and about 170lbs. He left in a grey SUV with a possible plate of RP6390. Investigators have not been able to locate any information connected to that license plate, so it is possible that the numbers may be incorrect or in the wrong order.
Anyone with information is asked to call EPD at 436-7979.

Sens. Tomes, Becker Join Gov. Pence to Create New State-Based Initiatives Office

 State Sens. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) and Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) joined Gov. Mike Pence in Evansville this week to establish the new Indiana Office of State-Based Initiatives (OSBI).

 

The office is charged with evaluating all federal grant opportunities to make sure the funding is not tied to burdensome regulations or mandates that wrest power from the states or impede economic growth.

 

“Most of us would agree that Washington, DC is broken, spending taxpayer dollars wildly, seizing power from the states and intruding into our daily lives,” Tomes said. “I’m grateful for a governor that stands up for Indiana and is willing to tell the federal government no. This is an important step toward reestablishing our state rights and our sovereignty.”

 

Pence signed Executive Order 13-20 during the Rotary Club of Evansville’s weekly meeting held at the Tropicana Evansville conference center on Tuesday, July 30. In his speech to Rotary members and state leaders, Pence said the OSBI will help “reduce federal regulatory burdens on state and local governments, taxpayers and Hoosier businesses.”

 

“I was pleased to support Governor Pence in the creation of this vital new office that will promote state innovation and solutions rather than accept top-down federal mandates,” Becker said. “Hoosiers will be best served by a state government that holds Washington accountable and refuses to tie taxpayers to regulations that could hurt small business growth and lead to higher taxes down the road.”

 

The OSBI will track the costs of federal regulations by coordinating with other state agencies, studying data and seeking input from businesses and Hoosiers.

 

An AL-pocalyptic Evening at the Victory

Evansville, IN – There was plenty of weirdness afoot when “Weird Al” Yankovic took the stage at the Victory Theatre on Saturday night for a stop on his Alpocalypse Tour. The master of satirical comedy proved once again that he has what it takes to entertain with his ever-expanding catalog of parody songs that skewer artists and pop culture from the 1980s to the now. A delighted auidence cheered their way through classic and newer hits, from “Eat It” to “White and Nerdy” and “Perform This Way.” And of course there was a polka medley performed by his talented backing band, numerous costume changes, Star Wars storm troopers, and a range of hilarious video clips to add extra humor to the fast-paced 90 minute show.

“It’s always great to be able to offer a show like this one where you see such a diverse audience in the theatre,” said Executive Director Scott Schoenike. “There were lots of grandparents and parents who brought their kids, and Weird Al’s comedy made a connection with all of them.”

The Victory Theatre continues an active summer and fall schedule with upcoming shows that include Charlie Worsham (Summer Country Nights concert series) August 15, No Justice (Summer Country Nights concert series) September 13, Philip Lawrence September 14, Tommy Emmanuel September 20, and Don Williams October 17.

Obama Oblivious to Economy as IRS Lobbies to Opt Out of ObamaCare

Last night on Fox News’ “Special Report,” Charles Krauthammer eloquently exposed President Obama’s ability — or preference — to remain oblivious to the economic conditions he has created. Maybe the president is in denial, or maybe the bubble that he has constructed shields him from any unpleasant conclusions. Whatever the case, Krauthammer points out that as a direct result of Obama’s economic policies, “the median income of the middle class of Americans has declined by 5% in his one term,” and we are experiencing “growing income inequality, chronic unemployment . . . [and] the worst recovery since World War II.”

It is stunning that President Obama himself said “this growing inequality is not just morally wrong” but “bad economics,” as if he had nothing to do with it. In his recent “economic pivot,” which started with his speech at Knox College in Illinois on July 24, no one has mentioned that since Obama took office in 2009, he has created an economy of renters and part-time jobs while the number of billionaires in the United States has increased by more than 23 percent. The hypocrisy is remarkable. How can the president get away with railing against an economy of his own making?

Obama’s ability to remain so oblivious to reality is also convenient when one looks at how Obamacare’s implementation is unfolding. In an underreported, jaw-dropping exposure, Joel Gehrke of the Washington Examiner details how the National Treasury Employees Union — that’s right, the union that represents the IRS — is “urging members to write their congressional representatives in opposition to receiving coverage” through Obamacare. In other words, Obama’s tool of choice for enforcing Obamacare and imposing it on the rest of us, the IRS, wants no part of Obamacare for themselves.

The union’s campaign follows House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp’s introduction of a bill that would remove lawmakers and federal employees from the current federal health benefits program and move them into the Obamacare insurance exchanges. Congressman Camp offered this bill, according to his spokeswoman, because “If the Obamacare exchanges are good enough for hardworking Americans and small businesses . . . they should be good enough for . . . federal employees.” Hopefully, Republican members of Congress can seize on this idea and go agency by agency, legislating that all federal employees be subject to the Obamacare exchanges. Would President Obama veto that bill? Would Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even let it come to the floor for a vote? Anyway, shout out to Congressman Camp.

Similarly, the president’s hypocrisy extends to the administration’s efforts to sell Obamacare. The National Review’s Eliana Johnson reports that Obamacare call centers in California are not offering health insurance benefits to their employees. And not only are the very people who are supposed to be selling Americans on the benefits of Obamacare not going to get those benefits themselves, but at least half of the call-center jobs are only part-time jobs, not full-time positions as originally advertised. Again, the glaring hypocrisy shines through.

Every part of Obamacare is a growing political burden on the Democrats. But it’s the hypocrisy that will fuel resentment among voters and drive turnout in November 2014. It will be interesting to see what August brings, and what vulnerable Democratic members of Congress, particularly those in the Senate, will witness for themselves in town hall meetings during recess, as victims of the calamity that is Obamacare begin to show up and vocalize their disapproval. Will they follow Obama’s lead and adopt the president’s “remain oblivious” strategy, or will they begin to demand some political relief? For the Democrats on the ballot in 2014, it’s only going to get worse.
