Vanderburgh County – Earlier today Indiana State Police received an anonymous tip that marijuana was being cultivated at a residence located at 3500 Schmitt Lane in Evansville. When troopers drove by the residence they spotted marijuana plants that were over 6 feet tall in the backyard. At approximately
2:00 p.m., Indiana State Police, Indiana National Guard Counter Drug Task Force, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Division and Warrick County Sheriff drug units arrived at the residence to execute a search warrant. When officers searched the property they found over 1,500 cultivated marijuana plants inside the residence and in the backyard. Officers also found over 300 grams of marijuana that was packaged and ready for delivery. “The marijuana plants had a street value of approximately
$1, 500,000,” said Senior Trooper Scott Qualls. The homeowner, Mark Alan Hunt, 50, was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where he is currently being held without bond.

Arrested and Charges:

Indiana State Police Report Accurate Context of David Camm’s Employment

Many of you that follow local and state wide news stories have likely heard about the third trial of David Camm, presently in progress in Boone County in the city of Lebanon, IN. David Camm had been a trooper with the Indiana State Police and resigned in early May of 2000, some four months before the murder of his wife and children in late September of 2000.

Regrettably, a majority of media outlets reporting on the Camm trial frequently introduce the news story as “Former Indiana State Trooper David Camm…….” before continuing on with the latest update to the ongoing trial.

While it is accurate David Camm was formerly employed by the Indiana State Police, the context of this statement has led countless people to believe the reason he is a former trooper is because of his arrest for allegedly murdering his wife and children.

Since the vast majority of media reporting this story consistently fail to present the accurate context of David Camm’s past state police employment, in relation to the murder of his family, the Indiana State Police is sharing this information with the more than 40,000 Nixle subscribers.

It is the position of the Indiana State Police that the heinous murder of David Camm’s wife and children and the devastation to the families and friends of the victims is the story and should be the focus. Where David Camm worked four months prior to the murders has no bearing on the crimes for which he stands accused and should not be used to distract from the focus of these heinous crimes.

The Indiana State Police supports and defends the freedom of the press but will not stand by idly when the context of presented information leads the media consumer to inaccurate assumptions.

Hotel Issue Deeply Dividing Republicans

Not long after Republican Precinct Committeeman Phillip Schultz decided to create the Facebook page “Citizens of Evansville Against a Taxpayer Funded Hotel”, another page cropped up on Facebook borrowing heavily from the opposition formula calling itself “Citizens of Evansville For Progress on a Convention Hotel”. The pro-hotel page even went so far as to swipe the opposition’s artwork, replacing only the name, which itself reveals something interesting.

Rather than simply replacing opposing terms in the name – i.e. rather than calling themselves “Citizens of Evansville For a Taxpayer Funded Hotel” – this page’s creator dropped all reference to taxpayers, opting for the more palatable (and telling) term “progress”.

In the succeeding days since their respective creations, each page has garnered a sizable following and some interesting demographic data has come to light. As the CCO previously reported, according to Facebook statistics, the pro-hotel page sees its largest group of supporters in the 35-54 age range, while the opposition page sees its largest support group in the 25-34 age range.

This is backward from what one might usually expect, which makes it interesting. The prevailing theory seems to be that young people are skeptical of such a large subsidy for a hotel because they realize that they will be the ones ultimately bearing the brunt of the expense over their working lives. Whatever the reason for this subtle demographic difference, one similarity between the pages is even more striking – both pages were created by Republican Party Precinct Committeemen.

In a revelatory exchange in the CCO comment section, Phyllip Davis, a PC in German Township Precinct 6, has revealed he is the progenitor of the pro-hotel page. This revelation further underscores the divisive nature this hotel subject is having on the local Republican Party. With its top two most visible representatives – the Mayor and the Chairman – being in favor of taxpayer subsidies for a private business, a stance more typically held by liberal Democrats and “Progressives”, many Republican party members, including Schultz, have seen this issue as a fight for the heart and soul of the Party.

The 2012 Indiana State Republican Party Platform states that the Party advocates fiscal responsibility: “We are committed to…Fiscal Responsibility by living within our means. This means keeping taxes low and government spending under control.”

In the section of the platform entitled “Limited Government”, the Party advocates facing obstacles in a “in a sober and meaningful way” while being “more judicious” in the way services are provided, and “ridding our system of fraud, waste and abuse.”

“Living within our means is more than a phrase.” the platform continues. “It’s the way we approach every fiscal decision made.”

On the subject of jobs and economic growth, the platform is clear: “The proper role of government…is to get out of the way and let Hoosier entrepreneurs and job creators build, grow and expand their private enterprises…”
In the section devoted to the taxpayer, the platform is unmistakable: “…promoting policies that encourage growth and investment in our state’s economy and keeps taxes low is among our highest priorities.” This section goes on to say, “…government should only request of its citizens the dollars it needs to provide necessary services. No more.”

Clearly this philosophy of providing only “necessary services” excludes a luxury convention hotel half-funded by taxpayer promises to pay at a future date, and the proponents of this hotel within the Republican Party – Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, Chairman Wayne Parke, Precinct Committeeman Phyllip Davis, Precinct Committeeman E. Lon Walters, County Commissioner Marsha Abell and others I might have forgotten – are at odds with the Indiana State Republican Party Platform in a very fundamental way. The platform contains no less than 27 references to “taxes” and “taxpayers”, and in none of these references is the progressive/liberal stance taken that taxpayers should be in the business of funding private companies for the “betterment of the collective”.

This issue has created a deep schism within the Vanderburgh County Republican Party. I have personally had occasion to have been harassed and harangued on the merits of this taxpayer-funded hotel by not only Progressive Democrats, but by the top representatives of our Republican Party. The loudest proponents continue to come from within my own Party – a Party that clearly professes to advocate against this sort of thing in its own platform.

My fear is this issue and others like it will continue to divide Republicans until some leader steps forward who can clearly articulate true, paleo-conservative Republican positions and focus all these disparate, flailing, neo-liberal viewpoints into a coherent, overarching philosophy to move us forward. Without this, the Republican Party can look forward to another 20 years of local irrelevance.

IS IT TRUE August 29, 2013

Mole #3 Nostradamus of Local Politics
Mole #3 Nostradamus of Local Politics

IS IT TRUE the report of the Evansville Redevelopment Commission to the City Council has finally been made available for 2012 and the results give pause to any financially prudent person who is observing the claims being made to justify borrowing $37.5 Million to give to a hotel developer?…in 2012 the downtown TIF reported revenue of $6.9 Million to cover expenses of $8.4 Million?…that is an annual deficit of $1.5 Million which is clearly not a sustainable spending model?…luckily there is a cash balance that has built up over time of $7.9 Million to cover a few more years of this unsustainable spending pattern?…Mayor Winnecke has been quoted as claiming that the downtown TIF brings in $14 Million per year in the dog and pony shows so he must be anticipating that the hotel will bring in about $7 Million per year?…that is irrational exuberance at its finest as the hotel property taxes are only anticipated to be between $500k and $700k?…TIF spending in 2012 that was related to Ford Center was just over $5 Million or 72% of total revenue?…the most disturbing revelation in the report was the line where the obligation of the ERC for Ford Center over the next 26 years is $260 Million?…that payment started on 2/1/2013 so it was not consuming any money in 2012?…that is $10 Million per year that a revenue source does not seem to be identified for?…this is the kind of thing that just makes you wonder if the elevator in the Civic Center goes all the way to the top?

IS IT TRUE according to the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County officials in the past when it was time to muster the faithful drones for a giveaway program it was claimed that the Victory Theatre was supposed to bring in 100,000 people a year to downtown Evansville?…the Riverfront Dock that incidentally is in Kentucky waters was also supposed to bring in 100,000 people a year downtown?…the LST was supposed to bring in 100,000 people a year?…the Centre supposed to bring in 100,000 people a year when the powers that be were selling it to taxpayers?…the Soccer Fields were claimed by the CVB to bring in 100,000 people a year, as were the initial claims of the not yet built $20 Million ball fields?…that these sales pitches all seem to revolve around claims of 100,000 tourists, none of which were realistic to begin with and none of which have worked out the way they were promoted when taxpayer dollars were being thrown at them?

IS IT TRUE the Vectren Headquarters was supposed to bring vitality and high paying jobs along with massive sums of money to downtown Evansville?…the American General Headquarters (Federal bailout AIG) turned Springleaf was supposed to be the hot ticket to transform downtown Evansville into Manhattan?…the Ford Center has supposed to be the final catalyst to make Evansville a major metro area and fill all of the empty storefronts on Main Street?…Main Street opening to traffic was supposed to stimulate private investments?…the Loft Program was supposed to stimulate private investments?….all of these programs were paid for with public money?…all those promises would mean that downtown Evansville should be coming into the national spotlight by now for positive things?…none of this has made much tangible difference in the downtown experience?……and now the hotel is represented to be the savior of downtown and all of the baubles of entertainment that have failed before?…If that hotel is a good investment and is going to bring in people and large sums of money private business or wealthy believers should invest their money to make this happen?

IS IT TRUE that  we are hearing from creditable sources that the City of Evansville shall expect some outside visitors from Washington, D C and Atlanta Ga.in the very near future?  …we hear that the officials that are planning to visit Evansville  are employed by the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Commission.

Republican Chairman Caught on Tape Strong-Arming Precinct Committeewoman

Bucshon protest

By Brad Linzy

Today I had occasion to speak with Mrs. Brenda J Bergwitz, a Precinct Committeewoman in the Vanderburgh County Republican Party. It had come to my attention that Mrs. Bergwitz had been the recent subject of a stern admonishment at the hands of Chairman Wayne Parke, and having also been the subject of such a similar admonishment in the past as a Precinct Committeeman, I was intrigued to find out more.

It seems that Mrs. Bergwitz has become a target of Mr. Parke because she has circulated a flier on Facebook calling for a protest of Congressman Larry Bucshon’s fundraiser at the American Patriot Group building – a building coincidentally designed by Ed Hafer’s firm and owned by Mr. Parke’s former Black Beauty Coal business associate, current Ameriqual owner, and political contributor Steven Chancellor. http://www.haferassociates.com/patriotgroup.php

This flier humorously claims Congressman Bucshon is “missing” and asks for people to be on the lookout for this AWOL Congressman who is not holding town hall meetings during his five week break, but is finding plenty of time for fundraising efforts.

What follows is the exchange between Chairman Parke and Precinct Committeewoman Bergwitz.

Brenda—

I am told the attached document is posted on your Facebook page. If it is, I ask you to take it down immediately. The Republican Party fully supports Congressman Bucshon and his re-election. You are a Republican Precinct Committeeman and it is inappropriate for a Republican Precinct Committeeman to support this type of activity.

If you wish to meet and talk about these matters, I will be happy to meet with you.

Brenda–

Please advise me if you are going to comply with my request below concerning the anti-Congressman Bucshon posting.

-Wayne Parke

Brenda Bergwitz’s Response:
Mr. Wayne Parke,

I received your e-mail last evening after I got on my computer and I got your phone message this morning.  Sir after your e-mail I was very concerned and felt threatened. I had Holy hour last night from 12-1 a.m. I had a lot on my mind. Did a lot of soul searching and praying that God well give me the right words to say, so I am writing my words down, Mr. Parke. I voted for you to be Republican Chairman.  Sir I believed in you and what you stood for, but after listening to your phone message you left me, Sir, I didn’t like your tone and re-read your e-mail.  I am a very Proud American and I believe in my God and my country. Everyone who knows me, they know what I stand for. What I posted is not an anti-Buschon post. It is a peaceful protest! I will not disengage, Sir. I bow down to no one but Jesus Christ. I know I was appointed Precinct Committeeman and you can take it away at any time.  I am proud of what I do and what I stand for. The reason we are doing this is because Dr. Buschon has refused to hold town halls while he is home for 5-weeks – not even one. What Dr. Buschon and the rest of Washington have forgotten is that We the People are their employers! They have just plain forgotten that they work for us!

Mr. Parke, Sir, I think it is time for you to step down as Vanderburgh County Chairman. The Republican Party is going by the wayside and that is so sad. I feel that your remarks were unbecoming a Republican Chairman. I did not post anything bad. I, Sir, am not a puppet. I understand your job, but I will not take [the post] down again. I am sorry it has come to this.

Sincerely,

Brenda J Bergwitz

——-

I believe Mrs. Bergwitz’s response is poignant and gutsy. I commend her for sticking to her guns in the face of political pressure. I thank her for allowing her remarks to be published. It shows remarkable principle on her part to stand up to the Party Chairman and a sitting Congressman from her own Party and refuse to kowtow. It is just these sorts of actions on the parts of rank and file members that eventually succeed in turning political parties from mere vehicles of good ol’ boy power into the true grassroots forces for change they were meant to be.

Friend Threatens To Hold Hotel Ordinance In Committee

14

Ted,

City Councilman John Friend
City Councilman John Friend

As I have previously indicated, the information necessary to make an intelligent decision on this multi-million dollar, twenty-five year commitment of the taxpayers of Evansville was dispatch over two weeks ago to your attention. The information given to me on Friday was NOT close to be sufficient in regards to my request. Others on Council may feel it was sufficient, but, I can assure you, it was not. Please note that if I’m denied my request, in the entirety, I will either hold the ordinance in committee, or will oppose the ordinance in the entirely, due to lack of pertinent information. Surely, the members of  Economic Redevelopment Commission had available the same information I have requested before their vote on approval, and, accordingly, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, likewise?

In addition, I have made it abundantly clear that I would execute a confidentially agreement in regards to the propriety aspect of HCW’s information, together with any independent experts the council so desires to engage in this process.

Please advise as to the timeliness. My I add, due to the delay in the my request, even if the data was delivered in the a.m. we may not have sufficient time to evaluate and review, thus delaying the proposal in committee.

Thank you for your consideration.

John

Is Honey Really Honey, or Is It Just High Fructose Corn Syrup in Disguise?

6

Dr. Arnold

By

Roy M. Arnold, MD

Honey is healthy, right? Honey is all-natural, right? Honey contains no High-Fructose corn syrup, right? The answers may surprise you. Over the last 2 years scientific publications have revealed a disturbing trend in commercial honey production that the general public may not be aware of.

By way of background, natural honey is produced by bees from the pollen and nectar of flowering plants. Natural honey straight out of the hive contains microscopic pollen grains, which when examined under the microscope can identify the plants used by the bees to produce the honey. An investigation published in 2011 by Food Safety News found that more than 75% of the honey sold at retail in the US contained NO pollen grains making it impossible to determine the origin of the honey.

Producers are ultra-filtering the honey to remove all pollen grains and at the same time diluting it with water or high-fructose corn syrup. Much of this honey is produced outside the US in China, Vietnam or India and once the honey is ultra-filtered it contains no evidence of its country of origin. According to the article, “Ultra filtering is a high-tech procedure where honey is heated, sometimes watered down and then forced at high pressure through extremely small filters to remove pollen, which is the only foolproof sign identifying the source of the honey. It is a spin-off of a technique refined by the Chinese, who have illegally dumped tons of their honey – some containing illegal antibiotics – on the U.S. market for years.”

The US Food and Drug Administration does not consider honey that does not contain pollen to be honey, but to date has done little to regulate the products that are sold on store shelves.

“The FDA has sent a letter to industry stating that the FDA does not consider ‘ultra-filtered’ honey to be honey,” agency press officer Tamara Ward told Food Safety News. She went on to explain: “We have not halted any importation of honey because we have yet to detect ‘ultra-filtered’ honey. If we do detect ‘ultra-filtered’ honey we will refuse entry.” Many in the honey industry and some in FDA’s import office say they doubt that FDA checks more than 5 percent of all foreign honey shipments.

For three months, the FDA promised Food Safety News to make its “honey expert” available to explain what that statement meant. It never happened. Further, the federal food safety authorities refused offers to examine investigator Bryant’s analysis and explain what it plans to do about the selling of honey it says is adulterated because of the removal of pollen, a key ingredient.

The Food Safety News investigators sampled 60 different brands of honey and found 76% of those sold in grocery stores contained no pollen, 100% of those sold in Pharmacies contained no pollen and 77% of those sold in big box stores like Walmart, Target and Sam’s contained no pollen. 100% of individual samples of honey distributed with meals at McDonald’s, KFC and by Smucker’s contained no pollen.

More disturbing news comes from an article published this year by a team from the University of Illinois in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which they found that a common industry practice of feeding bee colonies High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) instead of natural nectar may be

contributing to the so-called Colony Collapse Disorder which causes entire hives to die out. It seems that honey production increases if the hive is drained of honey and replaced with HFCS. A diet rich in HCFS apparently compromises the bees’ natural immunity to certain pesticides contributing to the sudden death of the entire colony.

According to WebMD, honey does have some medicinal properties. It has been used to treat stubborn wounds and many swear by its ability to diminish allergy symptoms and those of the common cold. There’s also a downside to the use of honey: raw honey may contain Botulism spores and if given to children under the age of 1 can actually cause botulism. Furthermore since honey does contain sugar, it is no better as a sweetener than white or brown sugar and can be hazardous to diabetics.

How then can one be certain that the honey bought is truly honey and not ultra-filtered and adulterated? First, make certain that you don’t confuse HFCS with honey. Second, honey that is labeled “organic” usually contains pollen grains and is produced in the USA. Third, honey purchased at farmers’ markets or from local farms is typically processed on site and is genuine.
