victoryThe Summer Country Nights concert series at the Victory Theatre drew to a close on Friday night with a rousing show featuring a veteran touring band and a newcomer returning to her Evansville roots. No Justice is a Texas Country band with a funky sound that incorporated country, rock, roots and R&B to create a catalog of songs that appealed to the wide range of ages in the audience. Show opener Lindsay Brandt traveled up from Nashville to take the stage in her hometown, and was excited to be performing at the Victory for the first time. Her set of rockabilly originals was well received by fans happy to see her back home.

“This concert was a good end to our inaugural Summer Country Nights at the Victory concert series,” said General Manager Ben Bolander. “We really appreciate the support we got from 93.5 The Wolf and other tri-state stations, especially our series ticket holders who wanted to bring business to the Victory and the downtown area. We hope to return next summer with even more great affordable shows.”

IS IT TRUE September 16, 2013

IS IT TRUE September 16, 2013

IS IT TRUE the revelation that came this weekend that HCW imposed absolute restrictions on any financial information that they chose to release was to be kept from the eyes and ears of the Evansville City Council and even the Office of the Mayor under a legally binding obligation took nearly everyone by surprise?…the expectation was for an extended negotiation period on what was to be released and attempts by the City Attorney to minimize the VETTING would be followed by a two week period of VETTING just as City Councilman John Friend asked for was what would eventually have happened?…the expectation based on some time doing independent searches was that HCW as a company and the founders of that company would VET well and that the only real depth after giving them the green light would be the deal itself?…what a difference a refusal to comply makes?

IS IT TRUE that we hope this makes each and every person in Evansville realize that the Mayor and the Evansville Redevelopment Commission supported this without this information or so much as a credit check and a background check?…this is EARTHCARE PART 2?…there is no hiding from the utterly incompetent way this was passed and presented to the people of Evansville?…if this was a private business seeking money from widows and orphans or even people of means this would very possibly be sufficient lack of oversight to constitute charges?…in the world of tax dollars the same rules don’t apply so it will likely pass of as just another attempt to let SNEGAL run wild in Evansville?…it is hard to believe the powers that be learned nothing from the dozen eggs on their face from the Earthcare Energy fiasco?

IS IT TRUE this refusal to supply the financial information requested as HCW has according to Crowe-Horwath makes the entire VETTING exercise moot?…by taking this position of “We’ll take your incentive for $25.4 Million for the hotel and parking garage, and by God we are not going to show you anything of a financial nature that your Finance Chairman has asked for” HCW has disqualified themselves from consideration?…anyone whether it be Mayor Winnecke, any member of the Evansville City Council, the Evansville Redevelopment Commission, the union supporters of this project, or the society page beautiful people of Evansville who is willing to fork over more than $25 Million to a company whose ownership will not so much as allow the kind of information that is customary to finance a car has a serious deficiency in their cognitive abilities?…let’s hope and encourage the supporters of this deal to take this opportunity to do what they had to do with the Earthcare Energy fiasco and retract their support for this developer period?…there is no reason to spend any time or money to VET this project and it is time to schedule this drawn out unvetted nightmare on MLK for a vote at the soonest possible time?…there is no logical reason whatsoever for this not to fail by a margin of 9 – 0 and lots of people in the support camp need to get on their knees and offer an apology and thanks to each and every skeptic who supports VETTING public projects as a bank does?

IS IT TRUE this deal for the same reasons that the Earthcare Energy deal was exposed as a farce should be the last straw when it comes to allowing the City of Evansville to even propose projects and make announcements without a professional VETTING process and 3rd party company on retainer?…this is the last strike, this is the coup de gras, and a real process needs to be in place and it needs to be there now?…there should be no discussion of so much as a nickel of public money going into anything that is not basic infrastructure related until a VETTING process is in place and approved?…this latest twist in what hopefully will be the last fiasco is an intervention opportunity for a local government gone stark raving mad over a 10 year period?…if the people of Evansville and the cognizant members of the City Council do not do something about this the Evansville does not “deserve” a hotel as the supporters have asserted, it deserves the fate that awaits when the mimicking of Detroit plays itself out in River City?

IS IT TRUE the CCO calls upon each and every elected official and their appointed surrogates to use this opportunity to right the ship before it crosses the point of no return?…this hotel may not have been enough to sink the ship but the irresponsible rotten policies that enabled this 4th unmitigated disaster to proceed and the Earthcare Energy debacle to unfold are enough to render even the very best of cities to irrelevance?…this is yet another opportunity to heal a 50 year old wound?…we truly hope that our local leadership has the brainpower and the courage to make that happen?

Councilman Al Lindsey Announces NO Vote on Hotel as Proposed

13
City Councilman Al Lindsey
City Councilman Al Lindsey

People of Evansville and my 6th Ward constituents,

I would like to go on record today as having decided to vote no on the proposed hotel deal.  My fellow Councilman Conor O’Daniel was clear in his analysis that this is not a good deal for the people of Evansville and I intend to join him in voting no.

Councilman O’Daniel did his analysis and made his decision on the merits of the project under the assumption that HCW of Branson, MO would be forthcoming with the financial information that our Finance Chair Councilman Friend requested to vet the project and the developer.  Even with his mind set that developer may well check out Councilman O’Daniel decided this was not a good deal.  I agree with him.

This weekend the City Council got an email from Crowe-Horwath telling us that HCW had demanded that the Evansville City Council and the Mayor were  not to be granted access to any of their financials.  Crowe then declined the opportunity to earn $15,000 to vet this project for us.

Folks, this is the last draw. HCW is willing to accept $20 Million from us as an incentive to build a hotel and even more money for parking that is only needed if there is a hotel but they are not willing to show us their financial information.  That is simply not good business.

My momma did not raise me to be a fool and I have the common sense to see that there is no reason to go forward with this developer under these unreasonable conditions.  Let’s just hold a vote and be done with it.

I do support a hotel on that empty lot and hope to see a serious developer that won’t keep secrets from the City Council who has to fund this project comes along.  Until such a developer does come along with a deal that is good for Evansville, count me among those who will be voting no.  The sooner we can vote this bad deal out the sooner we can get on about the business of finding the right partner for the right project.

City County Observer Selects Councilman John Friend As Final “Mole Award” Winner For 2013.

City Councilman John Friend
City Councilman John Friend

The Awards Selection Committee of the City-County Observer announced today that John Friend will be receiving a 2013 “Mole Award.” Friend, finance chair on the city council, has tenaciously advocated for the vetting of the proposed downtown convention hotel. Through his actions and the actions of others on the city council, the council was able to ask the right questions that took the vetting procedure to a point where a decision can be made on the refusal of HCW to allow the City Council and the Mayor’s Office to see the requested documentation.

Up until the point of the documents were refused to be released, the Mayor’s office and the Evansville Redevelopment commission had been rather dodgy when it came to specifics of the business plan over time.

Friend is the seventh and the last “Mole Award” winner for 2013 and this year’s award makes him a three time winner of the coveted award. Friend joins the Honorable Judges Brett Niemeier and Wayne Trockman as well as Indiana Senator Vaneta Becker. Matthew Burkhart of Newburgh and Ben Trockman of Evansville have also been selected as recipients for 2013, as well as Pidgeon Township Trustee Mary Hart.

Mary Hart was selected for her dedication to the Pigeon Township Trustee position for an outstanding 33 years. Indiana Senator Vaneta Becker was selected for her good public policy, seemingly endless committee work, and her many activities within the community. Judge Niemeier was selected for his work with Evansville’s youth and for his affiliation with the Alternative School that now resides in what used to be Evansville’s North High School. Judge Trockman has been selected for his public policy as well as his work with Vanderburgh County’s first Drug Treatment Court and Matthew Burkhart and Ben Trockman have both been selected as a result of their work in reforming laws and standards of operation. Matthew Burkhart successfully lobbied for reform of Indiana’s child labor laws in respect to children under the age of 14 being able to umpire and referee sporting events, while Ben Trockman’s work has encouraged airline companies to re-examine their policies and standards of operation for the physically challenged wishing to travel.

This year’s “Mole Awards” Ceremony will be held on October 14 at 12 p.m. in the Walnut Room at the Tropicana Hotel. This year’s event marks the sixth annual ceremony to honor those promoting good public policy and commitment to the community. Invitation to the ceremony is by reservation only and is year’s event is shaping up to be a sold out affair. Tables are selling quickly, to place a reservation or with any other inquiries please contact Mollie Darke-Schreiver at (812) 760-4233 or reach her by email at mdarke07@yahoo.com.
