INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Tom Dermody will be the new chairman of the House Public Policy Committee.

Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, is the new chairman of the House Public Policy Committee.

Dermody, a Republican from LaPorte, will replace Jim Davis, who left the legislature to become the director of the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

“Tom is a man of integrity and I am confident that he is right person for this job,” said House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, who appointed him to the post.

“Tom has exhibited strength in leadership, both in his role as the assistant majority floor leader and as the chair of the Higher Education Subcommittee of the Ways and Means Committee.”

Bosma said that as the chairman of the Public Policy Committee, Dermody “will deal with tough issues. I have total confidence that Tom will carry out the duties of his new responsibility with honor and fairness.”

The committee tackles issues related to gambling, alcohol, abortion and guns.

Dermody said he was honored by the appointment.

“Like my colleague, Rep. Bill Davis, before me, I will work to find common ground on important public policy issues affecting our state,” Dermody said. “I am eager to serve in this new capacity in order to affect policies that will impact and significantly benefit the lives of all Hoosiers.”

Dermondy was elected to the legislature in 2006.

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden Zoo Mourns Loss of Lioness

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden lost a friend today.  “Daphne,” a 19-year-old lioness, was humanely euthanized.

“It’s always difficult to make this type of decision, but watching Daphne’s failing health, severe arthritis and recent loss of appetite really let us know that it was her time; we would not let her suffer unnecessarily,” said Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden Executive Director Amos Morris.

Veterinary staff and Zookeepers had been monitoring Daphne closely for many months due to her advanced age and indicators that she was nearing the end of her lifespan.  According to Dr. Maria Spriggs, Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden’s Veterinarian, the average lifespan for a female African Lion in captivity is 17-20 years.  She had spent 16 of her 19 years as part of the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden family.

Morris adds, “No decision has been made to replace Daphne.  Today we are just mourning the loss of a beautiful creature.”

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden’s mission is to foster the preservation of the Earth’s diverse species and living systems through an active role in education and conservation in our regional and professional community. We will forge connections between people and the natural world by providing quality experiences that promote understanding and celebrate the rich tapestry of life.

Established in 1928, Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden is Indiana’s first zoo.  For more general zoo information, please visit www.meskerparkzoo.com.

Obama and the Limits of Schadenfreude

23

Excerpts:

“The word of the week seems to be “Schadenfreude.” We have Obamacare, or, rather, what appears to be the unravelling of Obamacare to thank for that.”

“Schadenfreude”: “hurt,” “damage,” “detriment” plus “joy.” Is there any more perfect German word? Taking malicious glee in the misfortunes of others. It is not an attractive emotion, though it is (to allude to a German philosopher who knows all about these things) a human, all-too-human one. I’m not sure what aspect of the mess is producing the most glee. The display of technical incompetence on the part of those who spent some $650 million of taxpayer (i.e., your and my) money creating a web site that doesn’t work. That was pretty nice. The fact that construction of the site was given to a former classmate of Michelle Obama in a no-bid contract is a nice touch.”

“And who hasn’t enjoyed the spectacle of the site crashing whenever Kathleen Sebelius holds a media event to demonstrate how easy healthcare.gov is to navigate. Nice! Then there is the sideshow of Democratic lawmakers having apoplexy as they begin to realize the extent of this debacle — the millions (yes, millions) of folks who have found a letter notifying them that their insurance has been cancelled because of Obamacare, the thousands of doctors who have been dropped from various insurance plans. Ouch and double ouch. Then there is the central drama revolving around President Obama. “If you like your insurance plan, you can keep your insurance plan. Period.” He said that, or variations of that, over and over again.”

“The revelation of Obama’s lies, his obvious confusion and the hunted-look he has exhibited at press conferences while his approval rating is in a death spiral (it dropped to 37%, the lowest of his presidency, in a CBS poll released this morning). All of this is, for the opponents of ObamaCare, ample ground for malicious glee, and I at least can deeply empathize with the blogger who wrote that “if schadenfreude had calories, I’d weigh 300 pounds.” There is, of course, a dark side to this story, which Jonah Goldberg neatly captures at NRO with a column called “Obamacare Schadenfreudarama.” He begins by paraphrasing Oscar Wilde: “You’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the unraveling of Obamacare.” Except, as Jonah goes on to note, “tt is no laughing matter that millions of Americans’ lives have been thrown into anxious chaos as they lose their health insurance, their doctors, their money, or all three. Nor is it particularly amusing to think of the incredible waste of time and tax dollars that has gone into Obamacare’s construction.”

” The hubris of our ocean-commanding commander-in-chief surely isn’t news to readers of this website. He’s said that he’s smarter and better than everyone who works for him. His wife informed us that he has “brought us out of the dark and into the light” and that he would fix our broken souls. The man defined sin itself as “being out of alignment with my values.” We may be the ones we’ve been waiting for, but at the same time, everyone has been waiting for him. Or as he put it in 2007, “Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama’s been there.”

“The news today that Obama was briefed last spring about possible widespread failures when the web site went live may seem to deepen the glee even as it deepens the malice. After all, the president has all along acted surprised by the technical failures bedeviling the roll-out of healthcare.gov. But now it turns out that the surprise, like so much else about the president, was feigned. It was part of his campaign of mendacity, i.e., lies. Those are harsh words. But they accurately describe a harsh reality.”

“In the end, what’s happening in Washington is no laughing matter. Sure, I feel a frisson of glee when contemplating the train wreck that is Obamacare. Jonah Goldberg, like many others, is right to invoke the operation of nemesis following ineluctably upon the career of hubris. But behind the folly, laughter, and ridicule is something that gives me pause. One of the most disturbing aspects of this entire affair is the stench of lawlessness that surrounds it like a miasma. President Obama carps impatiently that he will simply direct insurance companies to reinstate the policies that they, in an effort to follow the law, have been required to cancel. He says that he will direct that application of the law be delayed a year — but he says nothing about where he is supposed to get the authority for such actions. The president’s response to the embarrassment of the eponymous legislation he shoved down the throats of the American people is one of the most disturbing occurrences of his administration.”

“Since Magna Carta in 1215, a test of legitimacy has been the extent to which the sovereign is subject to the laws of the land. Obama is not a sovereign, exactly, but he acts as though he were above the law, that the law (like taxes) were something to be imposed on the rest of us but which he and his magic circle of apparatchiks could ignore or “delay” or partially implement at their pleasure. The law is binding upon us little people, and upon insurance companies, which would be severely penalized should they fail to abide the provisions of that intricate legislation.”

” The American people don’t like tyrants, even smooth-talking, Harvard-educated ones. The great trek away from Obama and what he stands for — above all, government unlimited — has begun. The journey will not be pretty, but I think it is all but certain to continue.”

IS IT TRUE November 21, 2013

IS IT TRUE November 21, 2013

IS IT TRUE that the $5 Million comp time liability cat is out of the bag in Evansville and the two groups that have the most members with comp time hours that exceed the limits set forth by the United States Department of Labor are concerned?…those groups would be the Evansville Police Department and the Evansville Fire Department?…the Mole Nation tells us that the EPD union has already held a meeting to discuss this  situation and that the EFD is not too far from doing the same?…this does bring up the question of “why didn’t union leaders alert their membership to the fact that many of them were being credited with comp time that exceeded DOL limits?”…one would think that union leaders would be knowledgeable of federal labor laws and would communicate any concerns about non-compliance with federal laws to both its members and the HR Department of the City of Evansville?…ultimately the responsibility for compliance lies squarely on the shoulders of the City of Evansville and any punitive actions taken will be taken against the city?

IS IT TRUE another fact of life since Monday is that anyone in authority at the Civic Center who is not aware of the 480 hour and 240 hour federal limits on accrued comp time must have been hibernating like the bears of Yellowstone all week?…it is safe to warn that any comp time hours that have been added to anyone’s accrual this week that exceeds the federal limits were put there willfully in violation of the DOL statute?…the laws do not look favorably on “ignorance” on the part of a municipality but the ignorance card cannot be played for any accrued comp time since Monday, November 18, 2013?…the time to use the “I didn’t know” defense is over?…all violations going forward are intentional and with knowledge of the law?…we reiterate that people have gone to jail for such things and admonish the City of Evansville to get their act together to cease this  practice, craft a solution that is lawful that is fair and acceptable to the affected employees, and implement this as if your freedom depends on the implementation?

IS IT TRUE Mole #19 reminded us yesterday that it is not just a company in Kansas City that was double paid by the city for work done on the Ford Center?…there were two other instances of sloppiness that may or may not have been corrected?…one was of course the payment for construction work done on the new North High School with inappropriate funds, and the other was a double payment to VenuWorks for start up money from the Evansville Redevelopment Commission and the Evansville Redevelopment Authority?…we hope to hear that these issues have been rectified soon?

IS IT TRUE the CCO is curious to learn that a member of the Evansville Parks Board does not believe the parks are in need of better maintenance and that the condition of the parks is just fine?…the only cure for this level of denial may be a trip to a few well maintained parks in other locations or even a visit to the best and worst of Evansville’s parks?…we would remind this board member that DENIAL is a river in Egypt and has no place in the stewardship of local public properties?…as with federal labor laws, “ignorance is neither an option or an excuse?”

IS IT TRUE that when local public projects accept federal money there are strings attached to it that sometimes make it less expensive to turn down the feds on their conditional support?…the painting of a complex of buildings in California is one such case?…the quotation for this job under the conditions of the Davis-Bacon (prevailing wage) laws mandated when federal matching money is included for this particular job was $234,000?…another quotation from a licensed and bonded professional painting contractor without Davis-Bacon mandates for the very same job is $43,250?…this is part of a much bigger project that has an overall budget in the millions of dollars with federal matching funds available?…as the strings and the conditions that come with the federal money more than double the price it is more cost effective to use the local funds only to complete the project and respectfully refuse the federal match?…today this writer knows the joy of formally advising the federal government that “We do not need or want your matching funds as your rules are oppressive to the point of wasting taxpayer dollars locally and nationally. Thank you but no thank you, we will do this ourselves?”
