March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

0

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time when we join with our partners to educate the public about developmental disabilities and highlight the many ways people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.

Throughout this month, we will be using each issue of From Jake’s Desk to highlight various state programs and initiatives designed to serve individuals and families affected by developmental disabilities. From ABLE savings programs to housing projects tailored for those with IDD, we are dedicated to helping Hoosiers find the opportunity to live in safe, affordable, quality housing.

USI suffers pair of setbacks to open The Spring Games

0

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – University of Southern Indiana Softball suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday to open its trip at The Spring Games, falling 7-1 to Quinnipiac University and 3-0 to Western Michigan University.

In Saturday’s first game, Quinnipiac (4-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Quinnipiac quickly grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-clearing double.

Down 4-0 going into the third frame, USI (3-9) scored a run on an infield RBI hit by senior outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana). However, Quinnipiac answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 6-1 advantage and did not look back the rest of the game.

USI scored one run on three hits, while Quinnipiac tallied seven runs off six hits.

In the circle, sophomore pitcher Raegan Gibson (Louisville, Kentucky) was charged with the loss and dropped to 0-2 this season. The right-hander allowed five runs in two innings pitched. Quinnipiac freshman pitcher Lauren Hilliard picked up her second win this season, tossing the last four innings scoreless.

In the afternoon contest against Western Michigan (5-5), it took a couple of innings for a run to score. Western Michigan threatened in the second inning with runners at second and third, but Southern Indiana got out of the jam.

The Broncos broke through in the third inning with a pair of runs off a two-out RBI single and a two-out RBI double. In the bottom of the third inning, USI had a chance to respond with runners at second and third and only one out, but the Screaming Eagles could not scratch across a run.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, USI had another opportunity with the bases loaded but stranded the runners. Southern Indiana could not muster any momentum from that point.

USI was held scoreless with six hits, and Western Michigan posted three runs on nine hits. At the plate, junior pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) went 3-3 for the Screaming Eagles.

Newman also pitched all seven innings for USI, falling to 3-4 this season with the loss. Western Michigan’s junior pitcher Kailey O’Connor moved to 2-1 following the shutout effort.

USI takes the field again at The Spring Games on Sunday morning. The Screaming Eagles square off against Monmouth University at 9 a.m. CT and Sacred Heart University shortly after at 11:30 a.m. CT.

USI holds off St. Thomas, 8-6

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball held off the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 8-6, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 4-6 to start the season, while St. Thomas goes 4-6.

USI jumped out in the bottom of the second when the Screaming Eagles took advantage of three walks and a pair of singles to score twice with two outs. Junior catcher Joe Ricchio (Pleasant Prairie, Illinois) singled in junior first baseman Thomas Emerich (Ava, Missouri), who had walked and stole second, while senior leftfielder Trent Robinson (Louisville, Kentucky) singled in junior second baseman Lane Crowden (Jackson, Missouri), who walked and advanced to second on Ricchio’s base hit.

After St. Thomas narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a tally in the top of the third, USI exploded for three more runs to boost the lead to 5-1. Freshman leftfielder Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Kentucky) scored on a wild pitch before Ricchio, who was two-for-three with three RBI, struck again with a two-run double to close out the scoring in the third.

The Tommies cut the Eagles margin to 5-3 after a un in the top sixth, USI rebound with a run in the bottom half of the frame to re-extend the margin to 6-3. Crowden scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by junior centerfielder Terrick Thompson-Allen (Sioux City, Iowa).

USI sealed the victory in the bottom of the seven to lead 8-3. Emerich started the scoring with a RBI-single through the left side, while Crowden pushed the eighth run across with a single to center.

The Tommies would sliced the USI lead to 8-6 with a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth before the Eagles closed the door on the 8-6 victory.

On the mound, junior right-hander Gavin Seebold (Jeffersonville, Indiana) went five innings in his first start of the year. Seebold (1-1) allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four in frames.

Indiana Looks Forward to Final Night of Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 5-ranked Indiana will have 18 finalists competing during the last night of the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday (March 2) inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University.

The Hoosiers have a 176-point lead over second place in the team standings going into the final night as they look to capture their third-straight Big Ten Championship. With the women’s team title a week ago, it would also mark the greater program’s second “double” in school history and first since 2019.

IU’s list of Saturday night participants includes 13 in championship heats, four in consolation finals and one C finalist. Indiana can also earn points out of the 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Hoosiers have the top seed in four events: the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, platform diving and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Senior Brendan Burns will attempt to win the 200 back, 200 fly double for a fourth-straight season. He gave himself the platform to do so in prelims as the top qualifier in the 200 back (1:40.88) and No. 2 seed in the 200 fly (1:41.57). Burns is the only Big Ten male to win both races in a single meet – Indiana’s Kate Fesenko was the first athlete and only woman to do so, completing the feat in 2010. A win in the 200 fly would make Burns the first Big Ten athlete to become a five-time Big Ten Champion in an individual event.

Junior Kai van Westering is the No. 2 seed in the 200 back behind Burns, touching in 1:40.91 during prelims. Friday’s 100-yard butterfly champion, Tomer Frankel ranked No. 5 in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.40.

Indiana will swim in the middle four lanes of the 200-yard breaststroke championship final. Junior Josh Matheny (1:52.06), senior Jassen Yep (1:52.70), freshman Toby Barnett (1:54.02) and senior Maxwell Reich (1:54.17) earned the top-four seeds in the morning. Sophomore Collin McKenzie (1:55.96) will swim the consolation heat, and Luke Barr (1:56.37) will score out of the C final.

For the second-straight night, Indiana will have three athletes in the top diving final. Friday’s 3-meter champion and reigning NCAA platform diving champion will represent IU on 10-meter Saturday night, joined by sophomore Maxwell Weinrich and fellow junior Quinn Henninger. Dash Glasberg finished 15th in qualifying to get into the consolation final.

LETTER TO THE CCO EDITOR : CONCERNING THE PROPOSED RATE INCREASED OF CENTER POINT

4

SUBMITTED BY: JENNA JOHNSON

Former Evansville Mayoral Candidate continues to stand up to Centerpoint when others won’t!!

On Thursday, February 29th, the OUCC held hearings for public input to the IURC regarding another rate increase.  As people filled the room at 2 pm, person after person shared their concern over the increase.  From record profits to stories of choosing to pay the electric bill or eat, many citizens are upset.
Mayor Terry shared a printed statement but fell short of asking for the Commission to stop the increase.  This could be because Centerpoint donated to her campaign in 2023.
The Vanderburgh County Commission adopted a resolution opposing the rate increase signed by all three County Commissioners, and Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave gave a persuasive speech for the opposition.
After waiting from 2 pm, Michael Daugherty came to the podium around 7:30 pm.  He stated, “I had a prepared speech, but I am not going to belabor what everyone else has said.”  He pointed out that the profits of customers should not be used to lobby candidates as what happened in the elections in Evansville.  He then shared that he was here in 2023 and the citizens’ concerns fell on deaf ears.  He then called every single member out.  “SHAME ON YOU!” as he named every single commission member. He received multiple applause several times during his short speech.
He stated, “Instead of parading all of us in here and voting for an increase despite our concerns, I would prefer you just bring us here, give us the finger, and thank us for coming”.  Michael left the podium to a rousing standing ovation.
Below is a video that I got from a friend who attended the meeting that I am compelled to share with you.

UE BASEBALL ROARS PAST PURDUE FORT WAYNE, 18-5, IN SERIES OPENER

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After falling behind early, the University of Evansville baseball team exploded for 16 unanswered runs on Friday night, as the Purple Aces cruised to an 18-5 victory over the visiting Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

“Tonight was an overall great effort by our team,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “Our offense really picked us up, as throwing up 18 runs on a Friday is not easy to do. We had quality at-bats up and down our lineup, but it really starts with our lead-off man Mark Shallenberger. He had five quality at-bats in six trips to the plate, and lined out in his only time he didn’t reach base. He was locked in tonight.

“I also thought that the job that Ethan Bell tonight was huge. For him to come in and put up goose eggs was really key for us not only tonight, but to set up our pitching for the rest of the weekend with it being a four-game series. I am just really proud of the effort all the way around tonight.”

Evansville jumped up early, as graduate third baseman Brent Widder launched a two-run home run to left-center field two batters into the first inning to give UE a 2-0 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne was able to rally for a run in the second inning and four in the third inning to grab a 5-2 lead, but the lead would be short-lived.

Evansville rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third inning to retake the lead. Graduate designated hitter Brendan Hord started the rally with an RBI double, before junior outfielder Ty Rumsey came through with an RBI single two batters later to get UE back within a run at 5-4. Graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger then followed two batters later with a two-run single to give UE a lead it would never lose.

UE tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-out, three-run double by Rumsey to push the lead to 9-5. A four-run fifth inning moved the lead to 13-5, as senior first baseman Kip Fougerousse and senior shortstop Simon Scherry had back-to-back RBI hits in the frame, and Rumsey added another RBI single. The Aces would finally explode for five runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring, as Shallenberger had an RBI single and Scherry added a grand slam to left field for his first home run of the year.

While UE’s offense was on fire, so too was redshirt sophomore reliever Ethan Bell. Pressed into action in the third inning with a runner on base and one out, Bell recorded the final two outs of the third inning and then mowed through the Purdue Fort Wayne lineup with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Bell allowed just a lone single in his outing, while striking out six men to pick up his second win of the year and improve to 2-0 overall. With the victory, Evansville improves to 5-4 on the season, while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 2-7. The two teams will continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Senior RHP Nick Smith and freshman LHP Kenton Deverman are scheduled to start the twinbill for UE.

Medsker fans 11 as Trailblazers upset No. 12 Kellogg C.C.

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University sophomore starting pitcher Logan Medsker (Marshall, Ill.) wasted little time breaking his new career-high in strikeouts from last weekend, coming out Friday night against the No. 12-ranked Kellogg Community College Bruins and setting a new career-high with 11 strikeouts on the game.

Medsker’s excellent pitching performance helped guide the Trailblazers to a 2-1 upset victory over the Bruins to kick off another busy weekend of Junior College baseball at Jerry Blemker Field.

The game began as another pitcher’s duel for the Trailblazers, with both offenses held scoreless through the first three innings.

Kellogg would break the scoreless tie in the fourth after their leadoff hitter reached on an error and came in to score on a sacrifice fly.

VU answered back strong in the bottom half of the inning with sophomore Kade Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind.) leading off the inning with a single, followed by a double by redshirt freshman Holden Clifton (Louisville, Ill.).

Hinton came in to tie the game on a wild pitch before sophomore Brandon Juarez (Evansville, Ind.) put down an excellent sacrifice bunt to drive in Clifton on the squeeze play and give the Blazers a 2-1 lead.

The Vincennes pitching staff took it from there with Medsker allowing one base runner in the fifth, before turning the game over to sophomore Christian Pinson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) in the sixth and sophomore Jace Parnin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) coming in from shortstop to close out the seventh by striking out all three batters he faced.

Parnin closed the door in the seventh to pick up the save and finish off the upset victory for the Trailblazers 2-1 over No. 12 Kellogg C.C.

Logan Medsker pitched an outstanding game Friday night, throwing five innings, allowing one hit, one run, zero earned runs and setting a new career-high with 11 strikeouts, including throwing an immaculate inning in the third by striking out all three Bruin batters on nine pitches.

Christian Pinson pitched an inning plus, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out two.

Jace Parnin entered in the seventh with the potential tying run on first and was able to slam the door shut with three strikeouts to end the game.

The VU pitchers combined to strikeout 16 batters Friday night, while only allowing two walks and two hits in the seven inning game.

“First of all, it started on the mound tonight,” VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “Logan Medsker gave us five quality innings and gave up no earned runs. Then he turned it over to the bullpen to Christian Pinson who did it last year for us and then Jace Parnin coming in for his first save of the year.”

“Then the other part of it is that we executed tonight both offensively and defensively,” Barney added. “We executed two hit and runs. Carter Whitehead made a great catch in left field early in the game. Then executed a squeeze play with Juarez with Clifton at third. You put all of that together, running up against their top arm who is a Purdue commit, is really good. That pitcher is as good as we’ve seen all year.”

“Hopefully we can feed off of this and build off of this,” Barney said. “This is a quality win for our program and we’re excited about it with opportunities to hopefully get two more tomorrow.”

Aces women’s basketball falls at Murray State

Forward Nevaeh Thomas led the Purple Aces in three statistical categories

MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team struggled to keep up with the Murray State Racers’ physical play in an 85-59 loss.

Freshman forward Neveah Thomas led the Aces in almost every statistical category on Friday night with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high four assists. UE led for the first quarter in their penultimate road game of the season but couldn’t hang on in the following 10 minutes. Three Evansville players ended the night in double figures as Thomas, guard Kynidi Mason Striverson, and forward Maggie Hartwig all had 10+ point games.

The Aces got to a hot start with an early three from guard Lexie Sinclair. Buckets from outside the arc kept UE in front early as it was an even game in the paint between the two teams. Evansville’s largest quarter lead came only three minutes into the game with a six-point advantage. Murray State responded with a brief run but a free throw and a third three from guard Kynidi Mason Striverson had the Aces back up by four. The quarter ended with traded shots until UE had back-to-back field goals in the final minute to head into the second quarter up by five.

Evansville got the first points in the second as well, making it a seven-point lead for the team’s largest of the half. But the Racers began to find their shooting outside the arc, making two threes in 30 seconds to cut the lead down to only one. The lead was traded twice before Murray State ended the half on a 14 to two run putting the Aces at an 11-point deficit.

Guard Julia Palomo had the first bucket of the second half to make it a single-digit game again. The Racers were able to respond with a three and a layup to make it a 14-point game. UE put together a four-point run to get back within 10 before the teams traded points for a minute. Murray State had another quick run that ended with Evansville’s last four points of the quarter from forward Maggie Hartwig. The third ended with a six-point Racer run, making it a 20-point game.

The Aces got most of their early points in the fourth quarter at the line, going four of four in the first two minutes. UE picked up its first field goal of the final frame at 6:19 from Thomas in the paint. The teams mostly traded points down the stretch as Murray State held onto a 20+ lead the entire quarter.  Evansville ended the game at the line as Mason Striverson split free throws for the 85-59 final.

The Aces will play their final road game of the season on Sunday afternoon in the Music City. UE visits Belmont for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Sunday, March 3.
