City Officials, OVC leadership Kick Off “OVC Championship Week” in Evansville

Evansville, Ind. (March 5, 2024) –  Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry joined Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Commissioner Beth DeBauche and the OVC host committee to officially kick off “OVC Championship Week” in southwestern Indiana.

The men’s and women’s OVC Basketball Championships presented by United Fidelity Bank will get underway tomorrow, Wednesday, March 6, and conclude Saturday, March 9 at Evansville’s Ford Center.

March Madness begins in Evansville as 16 teams will battle to be the first to claim their spot in the Division I NCAA Tournament. After concluding Conference play on Saturday, the Little Rock men and Southern Indiana women claimed the top seeds.

Mayor Terry announced that the Admissions Fair will once again return, this year on Thursday afternoon, to attract local high school students. In addition, the women’s and men’s championship games on Saturday are again scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the Boom Squad performing at the Ford Center plaza before the men’s championship game.

“We are excited to host the OVC Tournament for the seventh year, and to again see the first NCAA Tournament ticket punched right here in Evansville,” said Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry. “Even more, we’re grateful for the opportunity to work with our incredible community partners to not only host the men’s championship, but the OVC’s dual championships with the women’s tournament coming to Evansville as well!.”

“The City of Evansville continues to embrace our athletes, staff and spectators, and the OVC membership is grateful for the wonderful hospitality,” said DeBauche. “We are looking forward to an exciting and highly competitive tournament once again.”

Germania Maennerchor’s first Lenten Fish Fry is this Friday, March 8th!

Germania Maennerchor’s first of two Lenten Fish Fries is this Friday, March 8th from 5:30-7:30pm. The fish fries are open to the public in Germania’s Rathskeller at 916 N Fulton in Evansville.

Meals consist of two breaded & deep-fried filets, German potato salad, creamy coleslaw, baked beans + rye bread – all for $13 per plate. Or a fish sandwich and one side for $11.

Desserts will also be for sale.

Food is available for dine-in or carry out. The second fish fry will be held on March 29th.

Bailey and Cuff named to MVC All-Bench Team

Duo had exceptional years for the Purple Aces

 

  1. LOUIS – University of Evansville men’s basketball players Chuck Bailey III and Tanner Cuff were named to the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench Team in an announcement by the league on Tuesday afternoon.  The teams, which were selected by a panel of the league’s newspaper beat writers and a panel of media voters, are comprised of a minimum of five student-athletes (top five vote-getters, plus ties) on each squad.

Freshman Chuck Bailey III played in 30 games this season while making one start.  He completed the regular season with an average of 8.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.  The 4-time MVC Freshman of the Week had the top game of his Purple Aces career in November’s league opener at Missouri State.

In that contest, Bailey recorded 27 points on a 10-of-17 shooting performance.  Hitting 10 of his 13 attempts, he scored 18 at Bradley.  He was one of the most efficient free throw shooters in the league, finishing 11th in the conference connecting on 81.6% of his attempts.

Junior Tanner Cuff enjoyed solid campaign for Evansville, wrapping up the year with 7.5 points and 4.0 caroms per contest.  Seeing the floor in all 31 games, Cuff averaged 22.0 minutes per game.  He was a 49.2% shooter from the field and converted 74.1% of his free throw tries.  Cuff’s 70 assists was second on the team behind Kenny Strawbridge Jr.

Cuff’s top performance saw him tally 16 points in the home victory over UIC before registering 15 points at Murray State.  He ranked among the best in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio for the duration of the season, wrapping up the regular season with 70 helpers and just 32 turnovers.

Eagles open OVC Championship action Wednesday USI set to play Tennessee State at 6:30 pm

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball begins its second Ohio Valley Conference Championship action Wednesday when it takes on Tennessee State University in the opening round at the Ford Center. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
 
The Screaming Eagles (8-23, 5-13 OVC) open OVC post-season play as the eighth seed in the tournament. USI had to limp into the tournament this season, clinching a spot on the last day of the regular season and losing its last three.
 
USI is led by first-team All-OVC guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) who recorded a team-high 17.2 points per outing and is first on the team with 31.4 minutes per contest during the regular season. The junior also posted a team-best 20.5 points per game during OVC action, ranking second in the conference.
 
USI sophomore guard/forward AJ Smith (Edwardsville, Illinois) followed Hernandez, averaging 31.1 minutes a game, while posting 14.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest during his second season with USI. He also averaged 15.9 points in OVC play this season.
 
The Tigers of TSU (17-14, 10-8 OVC) are the fifth seed after losing their last two games of the season. TSU, despite going 0-2 last week, was .500 over the last 10 games of the regular season.
 
Following a season series split, the all-time series is tied 2-2 between USI and TSU. The Eagles took the opening game in January, 69-67, at Screaming Eagles Arena, but lost in February, 79-74, in Nashville.
 
The winner of the USI-TSU contest Wednesday advances to play Western Illinois University Thursday at 6:30 p.m. WIU (20-11, 13-5 OVC), the fourth seed in the tournament, earned a first-round bye during its first season in the OVC.

UE Softball to face Lindenwood in home DH on Wednesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the first time since February 19, the University of Evansville softball team will be at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James & Dorothy Cooper Stadium on Wednesday when the Purple Aces welcome Lindenwood for a doubleheader.

Game one is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch with the second contest to begin 30 minutes following the completion of the first contest.

Evansville is coming off a 4-game weekend in Charleston, S.C. where they took part in the Low Country Classic. Jess Willsey batted .500 with seven hits in 14 at-bats over the course of the weekend.   She recorded a home run and two RBI on the weekend while reaching base 53.3% of the time.

Abby Bode batted .500 with three hits in six at-bats, but her offense did not stop there in the weekend trip to Charleston.  Bode added three walks and a sac fly to finish with an on-base tally of .600.  Hannah Hood also finished the trip with an average over .400.  Picking up five hits in 12 at-bats, Hood batted .417 while reaching base 50% of the time.

Lindenwood comes into Wednesday’s doubleheader with an even 9-9 record on the strength of a 6-game win streak.  In their weekend home tournament, they took two games apiece from Bellarmine and Green Bay.

UE Community Gears Up for Highly Anticipated Solar Eclipse

EVANSVILLE, IND. (03/05/2024) As the date for the much-awaited solar eclipse draws near, the University of Evansville (UE) is pulling out all the stops to ensure an unforgettable experience for its community as part of “UEclipse.” On Monday, April 8, this celestial event promises to attract thousands of visitors to the area, and UE is ready to host an array of activities to mark the occasion.

In anticipation of the eclipse, the University is hosting a lecture on Sunday, April 7, by distinguished alumna Maria Weber ’08, PhD, on solar magnetism titled “From Eclipses to Magnetism: The Secret Life of the Sun.” This presentation is funded by the Dr. Guy Banta Distinguished Lecture Series in Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The lecture will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Eykamp Hall on the UE campus.

On Monday, April 8, beginning at 12:45 p.m., the partial phase of the eclipse will commence, leading up to totality at 2:02 p.m. The eclipse will conclude with the partial phase ending at 3:20 p.m. To maximize enjoyment, UE has organized a series of events starting at 11:00 a.m. that day.

Highlights of the day’s activities include:

  • Live performances by the UE Pep Band and a captivating presentation by the UE Theatre, both taking place outside the Ridgway University Center at East Terrace Lawn.
  • Line dancing and moonwalk sessions hosted by the UE Dance Company.
  • A game zone for enthusiasts located on the first floor of Ridgway University Center.
  • Corn hole boards available for entertainment before the eclipse.
  • Access to sand volleyball and basketball courts at Hale Hall.

Additionally, Chartwells will provide food offerings at the soccer stadium concessions, and there will be special narrations by Jeffrey Braun, PhD, and Maria Weber, PhD, on what to expect as totality approaches.

UE advises attendees to plan their journeys accordingly due to expected increased traffic and potential internet connectivity issues. The University encourages nearby residents to join the festivities.

Hernandez named first team All-OVC​​​​​​​

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball junior guard Jeremiah Hernandez (Chicago, Illinois) was honored with first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors today. Hernandez named to the ten player first-team after being selected by the OVC head coaches and the communications directors.

The post-season conference honor is the first for Hernandez.

Hernandez is the leader of the Eagles in 2023-24, averaging a team-high 17.2 points per outing and is first on the team with 31.4 minutes per contest. The junior also is posting a team-best 20.5 points per game during OVC action, ranking second in the conference.

In addition to posting career season-highs in a USI uniform, Hernandez scored a career-high 35 points in the overtime win in the 2023-24 OVC opener at Southeast Missouri State University. He has posted nine games over 20 points this season and recorded a pair of games with 30-or-more.

Hernandez and the Eagles starts their second appearance in OVC Championship as the eighth seed at the Ford Center Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. USI is set to play fifth-seeded Tennessee State University in the first round.

USI Softball closes trip to The Spring Games with 5-0 victory

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – University of Southern Indiana Softball closed its trip to The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida, on Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout victory over the University of North Dakota.
 
Southern Indiana struck first in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday. USI loaded the bases with two outs when sophomore outfielder Caroline Stapleton (Shirley, Indiana) brought a run in on an infield RBI hit.
 
The Screaming Eagles built onto their lead in the next inning. Senior first baseman Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) led off the third frame with a home run, her first of the season. Later in the inning, USI did some more damage with two outs. Freshman infielder Sydney Long (Haubstadt, Indiana) and senior outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana) tallied back-to-back RBI singles to put USI ahead 4-0. Southern Indiana scored one more time before the end of the third inning to lead 5-0.
 
From that point on, North Dakota kept USI off the scoreboard, but the five-run cushion was all that USI starting pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) needed. The right-hander shut down the Fighting Hawks, hurling a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. For Newman, Tuesday’s performance was the ninth complete game and second shutout this season. The junior moved to 5-4 on the campaign with the win.
 
Offensively, Southern Indiana recorded its five runs off eight hits. Bedrick ended up with a two-hit game with an RBI. Junior infielder Hailey Gotshall (Lucerne, Indiana) tallied a hit and scored two runs.
 
North Dakota (5-17) mustered just the one hit at the plate, while junior pitcher Makaela Carr was charged with the loss to move to 3-4 this season. Carr lasted 2.2 innings, giving up five runs – two earned – off seven hits and two walks.
 
With Tuesday’s win, the Screaming Eagles improved to 6-9 this season as they head back north to begin Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday and Sunday at Tennessee Tech University. Saturday is set for a doubleheader starting at Noon. Sunday’s series finale is also scheduled for Noon.

Evansville, In.:  After coming up just short in two games against the Quad City Storm this past weekend, the Thunderbolts look to bounce back this coming Friday and Saturday in Huntsville before returning home to take on the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Sunday afternoon at Ford Center.

 

Week In Review:

 

The Thunderbolts were swept in the weekend series by Quad City this past weekend, falling 6-3 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.  Mark Zhukov, Myles Abbate, and Nick Prestia each scored on Friday, while Aiden Wagner potted both Evansville goals on Saturday.  Ty Taylor played in goal on Friday, stopping 24 of 29 shots, while Brendahn Brawley stopped 30 of 33 shots on Saturday.

 

The Week Ahead:

 

The Thunderbolts will be in Huntsville, Alabama to take on the Havoc this Friday and Saturday night at Von Braun Center, both games set to begin at 7:00pm CT.  Fans can watch Friday and Saturday’s games on FloHockey with a paid subscription or can listen in for free on the Thunderbolts Mixlr Channel.  Fans can also watch both games at the Official Thunderbolts away game watch party at Parkway Pizza on 3911 Broadway Avenue on Evansville’s West Side.  Back on Ford Center ice on Sunday afternoon, the Thunderbolts will host the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 3:00pm CT for Sunday Funday, featuring $2 hot dogs and popcorn.  In addition, SkyZone will be giving away free goodies while Legendary Inflatables will have a slide in the lobby.
