USI College of Liberal Arts to hold 16th annual Interdisciplinary Colloquium in conjunction with Solarpalooza

The University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts will present Eclipse: The 16th annual Interdisciplinary Colloquium from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 8 as part of Solarpalooza and before the total solar eclipse beginning at 2:02 p.m.

Solarpalooza at USI will offer unobstructed sky views and learning opportunities to educators, students and the community that uniquely position the University as the prime location for viewing the eclipse.

Students and faculty are being asked to propose papers, panels, artwork, posters, performances or workshops for the Colloquium that will allow the community to explore the many facets of eclipses, from their scientific underpinnings to their cultural and historical significance. “There will be a mixture of faculty and student presentations exploring the concept of eclipses, both literal and metaphorical for this special colloquium,” said Dr. Alexandra Natoli, Assistant Professor of French and event organizer.

Dorothy is trying to hold it all together with help from a new (much) younger lover. Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is a professional stage show unlike any other Golden Girls tribute ever! This side-splitting tribute lets audiences relive the heartfelt hilarity of the four ladies who never stopped being best friends.

The production is written by Robert Leleux, author of The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy and The Living End. His work has also appeared in The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine. The show is directed by Eric Swanson, who was the co-founder and Executive Director of The Detroit Actors’ Theatre Company. This year’s event will begin at noon Saturday, March 23 and continue until midnight Sunday, March 24.

Indiana State Police Seeks Police Officers for the Capitol Police Section Selection Process

The Indiana State Police Capitol Police Section is accepting applications for traditional and lateral applicants.  Individuals interested in beginning a rewarding career as a Capitol Police Officer may apply online at https://www.in.gov/isp/career-opportunities/capitol-police/.  This website provides a detailed synopsis of the application process and information on additional career opportunities with the Indiana State Police.  Applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm (EST) on Sunday, March 31, 2024. 

The starting salary for a Capitol Police Probationary Officer is $62,327 a year.  After the first year of employment, the salary will increase to $64,472. 

The starting salary for Retired or Police Officers in good standing with their agency having twenty (20) or more years of experience as a Tier I or Tier II Officer is $75,431.

Basic Eligibility Requirements for Traditional Applicants:

  1. Must be a United States citizen.
  2. Must be at least 21 years of age when appointed as a police employee.
  • Traditional Recruit Graduation/Appointment Date: September 21, 2024
  1. Must meet a minimum vision standard (corrected or uncorrected) of 20/50 acuity in each eye and 20/50 distant binocular acuity in both eyes.
  2. Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate an automobile.
  3. Must be a high school graduate as evidenced by a diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).  


Lateral Applicants:

Must be a merit law enforcement officer with an Indiana Law Enforcement Tier I or Tier II Certification. Out-of-state law enforcement officers are eligible if their certification is determined to be equivalent to the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board standards. A finishing school will begin on June 24, 2024.

The Indiana State Police Capitol Police Section also offers an excellent health care plan, including medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage for current and retired employees and their families.  The State maintains short-term and long-term disability plans for full-time employees after six (6) months of continuous employment.  As an Indiana State Police Capitol Police Officer, you are automatically enrolled in the Public Employees Retirement Fund (PERF), and the State will contribute to your retirement account.

Women’s golf completes Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational

Kate Petrova ties for 12th

 

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Recording an even score of 72 in Sunday’s final round, Kate Petrova tied for 12th place to pace the University of Evansville women’s golf team at the Rio Verde Collegicate Invitational at White Wing Golf Course at Rio Verde Country Club.

Petrova’s 3-round score of 217 saw her earn the best finish for the Purple Aces.  Her top effort of the weekend was a 2-under 70 in the second round.  Finishing second for UE was Allison Enchelmayer.  She tied her low round of the weekend with a 75 in the last round and tied for 50th with a 226.

Finishing four strokes behind Enchelmayer was Destynie Sheridan.  Her lowest score of the weekend saw her card a 74 in the final 18 to finish the tournament with a 230.  She tied for 65th place.  Jane Grankina and Magdalena Borisova rounded out UE’s top five.  Grankina posted a 77 on Sunday, matching her low score of the event.  Her 3-roud tally of 236 tied her for 87th.  Borisova scored a 90 on Sunday to wrap up the tournament with a 256.

Evansville came home in 16th in the final team standings with a 905.  They came in one shot ahead of Western Michigan.  Cal Baptist took the team championship with an 865.  Xavier and Illinois State tied for second with scores of 870.

Alo Schrock of the Redbirds was the medalist.  Her 2-under 70 in the third round bested Kennesaw State’s Bella Kil by one stroke.  Schrock’s total finish at 211.

Next up for the Aces is the Nevel Meade Invitational in Prospect, Ky. on March 18-19.

Free bases prove costly as VU falls to Morton to close out weekend

VINCENNES Ind. – The Vincennes University Trailblazer baseball team closed out another busy weekend of NJCAA baseball at Jerry Blemker Field Sunday afternoon, falling to Morton College from Cicero, Ill. 13-4.

The VU pitching staff allowed six walks in the game and hit an additional five batters Sunday, which the Panthers pounced on with the help of some timely two out hitting.

Morton College got the scoring going early, breaking the game open in the second with five runs before adding another run in the fourth to increase their lead to 6-0.

Vincennes would get on the board in a big way in the bottom half of the fourth, with freshman Corbin Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) leading off the inning with a solo home run, his first collegiate home run to cut the deficit to 6-1.

Morton then responded with a pair of runs in the sixth and five more insurance runs in the seventh to take a 13-1 lead heading into the final half inning.

The Trailblazer bats looked to come alive in the bottom of the seventh and try to pull off a miracle comeback.

The VU offense was jump started by a pinch hit leadoff double by freshman Noble Johnson (Terre Haute, Ind.) followed by a single by freshman Logan Edwards (Corydon, ind.).

The pair were then driven in on a two-RBI triple by freshman Bradyn Douglas (Frankton, ind.), who later scored on an RBI single by redshirt freshman Holden Clifton (Louisville, Ill.) to cut the Morton lead down to 13-4.

This would be as close as the Blazers would get unfortunately, as the Panthers closed out the victory to end a busy weekend of baseball at Jerry Blemker Field.

“Bradyn’s swinging it well,” VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “Hopefully Holden’s getting back to his old form that he had last year. Corbin Napier has shown that he has some juice in his bat with a nice home run today by him.”

“Some guys stepped up in situations but it’s easy to play when you’re down a ton of runs,” Barney added. “It’s more what do you do when the horses are not out of the barn yet and it’s 0-0 or a close game in that situation. So we’ve got to be better right from the get go.”

Sophomore Max Lines (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the start on the mound for the Blazers, throwing an inning and two-thirds, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out four.

Freshman Noah Dearmitt (Franklin, Ind.) was the first out of the pen for VU, throwing two and one-third innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three.

Sophomore Jack Robinson (Mooresville, Ind.) took a turn on the mound, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out two in an inning and two-thirds of work.

Freshman Colton Okes (Evansville, Ind.) and sophomore Keegan Schlotterbeck (Centerville, Ind.) then combined to get the final four outs, each recording one strikeout.
