Jian Ghomeshi
Independent’s Eye by Joe Gandelman
TORONTO — Canada gave us now-former Mayor Rob Ford, who led comedy writers to get down on their knees, look to the heavens and shout “Thank You!!†due to his alcohol and drug-induced antics, coupled with his uncanny resemblance to Saturday Live’s late Chris Farley. Canada’s biggest scandal now swirls around CBC’s mega-radio-talk show star Jian Ghomeshi — who seems to be doing a Bob Filner imitation.
In case you forgot, the San Diego mayor became a big national story and editorial cartoonists’ favorite during his time in office, which started December 2012 and ended in his August 2013 resignation amid a lawsuit and multiple women alleging sexual harassment.
So many stories surfaced alleging inappropriate behavior by Filner that you almost expected Macy’s to suggest that his accusers walk down the streets of New York on Thanksgiving day.
It got to the point where you got the feeling that the worst answer a female employee could give Filner if he asked her “What do you want for Christmas?†would be: “A Christmas goose.â€
Canada’s newspapers are brimming with reports about how the now-fired Ghomeshi liked to hit on women.
Literally.
Like in BDSM. Women are coming forward in the media claiming he slapped or choked them without permission — and that he’d turn his teddy bear’s head away from them before he started his Marquis de Sade act.
It’s at the point where, if you believe the allegations, you have the feeling the worst thing a woman could ask Ghomeshi would be: “Baby, how about a smack?â€
Some, like the Toronto Sun columnist Mike Strobel, think Ghomeshi is Rob Ford deja vu.
“Shocking revelations, one after another, the alleged abuses, a police probe, the sudden removal of power, talk of a troubling video, it’s all so … Fordian,†Strobel wrote. “In fact, Jian Ghomeshi, hero of the liberatti, is making Rob Ford, champion of the right, look like a choirboy…Jeepers Creepers Ghomeshi has dragged the world’s most lovable stuffed toy into the gutter with Chucky, Annabelle, and Stephen King’s cymbal-banging monkey.â€
Canada’s press is having a field day. Each day there’s a new tidbit. The Toronto Star: “Journalism students at the University of Western Ontario were cautioned against pursuing internships at Jian Ghomeshi’s popular radio show Q due to concerns about ‘inappropriate’ behavior towards young women by the now-fired host, according to a former student at the school and a journalism professor.â€
It’s a real mess. Police are investigating his behavior with CBC employees, and the CBC has hired its own investigator to probe allegations of violence and groping. Ghomeshi is suing CBC for $55 million, arguing he wasn’t fired for good cause — and the CBC wants his lawsuit dropped.
The scandal started Oct. 24, when Ghomeshi announced on the air that he was taking a leave of absence without specifying why. Two days later the CBC announced it was dropping him after receiving information about him that media reports said purportedly showed a woman’s injuries. He argued he was fired only due to information he gave the CBC to prove his rough stuff was consensual after an ex-girlfriend claimed she hadn’t consented.
Next came a story with allegations from three women who had not filed complaints with police. In that story, his attorney insisted his client “does not engage in non-consensual role play or sex and any suggestion of the contrary is defamatory.†According to one account, nine people have now complained to the media.
This media gift that keeps on giving centers on someone who seemingly had it all. Perhaps for that reason, those around him are alleged to have looked the other way or downplayed longtime rumblings about him. Haven’t we heard that elsewhere before?
The popular host had interviewed the internationally famous such as Woody Allen, and his show’s quality was as excellent as his music had been when he was a musician. By all accounts, his view of life at the top with all the money, power, and appeal to women that goes with it wasn’t slapdash.
Or at least not “dash.â€

IS IT TRUE the smart meter integration into the City of Evansville’s infrastructure continues to create highlight film material for stupidity?…it is not so much about the meters themselves as it is about the non-thinking way the buying, planning, and implementation has been going?…Evansville has found a way to look dumb in an effort to spend nearly $50 Million to convince the voters they are smart?…there have been enough of these smart water meters installed across the country for a good statistical data base to have been in place to predict breakages caused by the installation crew and to have built that cost into the original deal?…such data must have either been ignored or altered to have come up short on the repair funds which prompted the City of Evansville to send out one of the most callous and selectively punitive letters we can imagine to its CUSTOMERS?…the letter and the timing of the letter to select CUSTOMERS that basically said “we are coming to switch out your meter and you have to do some expensive repairs before we get there or we may just break it ourselves and charge you to fix what we broke.”…this letter is an all time winner in the stupid governance category? …we  wonder if this callous letter was styled by one of the Mayors newly appointed backroom political patronage buddies ?
IS IT TRUE the City County Observer wants our readers to know that the water bill for the McCurdy that was sent to one of our senior citizens last week was not because the Kunkel Group that now owns the building neglected to pay their bill?…that distinction belongs to City Centre Properties of Carmel, IN who left the bill unpaid along with some property taxes, while never missing an opportunity to make political donations to the Weinzapfel of Anything coffers?…Kunkel Group officials tell us the water is not turned on to the McCurdy and that it won’t be until a refurbishment project begins?…billing that senior citizen for the negligence of a previous owner of the McCurdy earnes the City of Evansville Water and Sewer Utility it’s second stupid governance award for the week?…some of the things that happen within the walls of the Civic Center really make one wonder if their is some stupid juice in the water?
IS IT TRUE Mayor Winnecke is now on record as stating that land based casinos are a thing of “vision”?…he is of course correct but the visionaries who did this are people like Bugsy Segal, the mafioso who pioneered Las Vegas, and the Bautista Regime whom Fidel Castro ran out of Cuba at gunpoint?…land based casinos are not a grand vision, they are simply the most practical solution imaginable for a state that has gotten itself addicted to casino taxes?…calling this “vision” could land the Mayor a stupid governance prize but it does not rise to the level of the moronics perpetrated on Evansville this week by the Water Department so we will just leave the “vision” thing at silliness?
IS IT TRUE it has been pointed out that Evansville is near the bottom of the list for integration of smart electric meters?…such meters really do work with the grid to pinpoint problems and integrate distributed generation devices like solar panels and wind energy devices?…they are also useful in identification of opportunities for peak shaving by cascading power up algorithms for industrial applications?…whether the smart meters are for electricity or water, they are only as smart as the people using the information they transmit?…in the City of Evansville’s case that has thus far been far from smart?
IS IT TRUE the Republican wave that hit the U.S. Congress in Tuesday’s midterm election also boosted the party in state races, where it gained control of 10 chambers and could be on track to holding the largest number of legislative seats since before the Great Depression?…to be specific if the winners hold up as indicated, the democrats will hold fewer state chambers than they have since 1860?…that would be the year the the first Republican President Abraham Lincoln took office and the Civil War began?…how President Obama can remain oblivious to the depth of the defeat is just mind boggling?

“Protecting life is the core mission of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Dave Wedding. “We train our staff in CPR and the use of automated defibrillators; Narcan is another life saving tool that we now have at our disposal. If our Narcan program allows us to save even one life, it will have been well worth the effort.”
Vanderburgh County is not immune to the nationwide increase in heroin-related overdose deaths. Prescription painkillers such as Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are commonly abused prescription opiates that can slow and even stop breathing when taken at non-therapeutic levels. Often a responding Sheriff’s deputy is the first to arrive at the scene of an overdose. Minutes count in an overdose situation, so quick delivery of Narcan can dramatically increase the chances of a positive outcome. The sprayed version of Narcan is readily absorbed in the nasal cavity and does not have to be “breathed in”.
Our sincere thanks are extended to Fire Chief Keith Kahre, the Scott Township Fire Departmentand St. Mary’s Medical Center for providing training, support and technical assistance to our office and staff.
