Energy Policy Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday April 2nd

0

Energy efficiency is “out” with coal and even nuclear very much “in” for Indiana despite that fact that new coal and nukes are hugely expensive and efficiency has proven very affordable in other states.

Where do we go from here? That will be discussed in this month’s Southern Indiana Democracy for America Town Hall on Wednesday April 2, beginning at 7 PM in the Browning Room A of the Evansville Central Library.

Last Friday, Governor Pence announced that he would not veto a bill that essentially destroys Indiana’s State Energy Efficiency program which was less than two years old and saving consumers money and saving utilities the need to build new power plants. Instead, he wants the program to go back to square one except one allowing an “opt out” for the State’s largest consumers. And, the Chairman of the Senate Utility Committee this year introduced a bill to encourage use of more nuclear energy in the state.

This is the same legislature that has remained quiet concerning the huge cost overruns experienced with the construction of the Duke Edwardsport new coal plant that went from a promised $1.2 billion in 2006, to more than $3.5 billion most of which requires ratepayers to assume the risk.

Currently, Governor Pence is undertaking development of a new “all of the above” Energy Development Plan which thus far has had little input from the public, both consumers and alternative energy companies. SOINDFA discussion of these issues is designed to bring a wide array of opinion and fact to the table in Indiana.

The Town Hall is open to the public and people are encouraged to offer their voice to these monthly events.

Foundation Board member named Indiana Torchbearer

0

untitled

By definition, a torchbearer is a person who carries a ceremonial torch and is in the forefront of a crusade or movement. Although Dr. Cathlin (Cathy) Gray may not physically carry a torch, she is a torchbearer for countless children, women and men in the Evansville community. Gray has committed her career to education and has been a tireless advocate for the needs of children and families. As a result, she was recognized as one of the 2014 Indiana Torchbearers at the 10th Annual Torchbearer Awards Program on March 5, 2014 in Indianapolis.

Gray is a St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation Board Member and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) Associate Superintendent for Family, School and Community Partnerships.

The Torchbearer Awards are the most prestigious recognition for women in the State of Indiana. The awards are presented by the Indiana Commission for Women and honor women who have made Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Gray has worked in the EVSC for more than 25 years, serving in a variety of capacities including principal of Cedar Hall Elementary School. At Cedar Hall, she promoted efforts to link the school and community through a school-community council. This council was credited with helping to bring local organizations and agencies around the table to help the neighborhood and its students.

Gray was nominated for the award by Janet Raisor, Executive Director of the St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation. Raisor said “Cathy epitomizes the essence of caring for others and for her community. She has inspired numerous men and women both in academia and in the neighborhoods in which she has served the EVSC.”

Congratulations Cathy and thank you for the work you do to make our community a better place!

RIECKEN PLEASED AT PASSAGE OF LAWS ENCOURAGING SAVINGS, REGULATING SCOOTERS

riecken_2012 (175x220)

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has signed two measures into law that carry the imprint of many hours of work by State Rep. Gail Riecken (D-Evansville). One provides a new and creative means for Hoosier families to save money, while the other brings long-needed regulations of motorized scooters across the state.

“There have not been many highlights this legislative session, but I am pleased to see that both of these proposals will become law,” Riecken said. “They are the product of input from area citizens, as well as a bipartisan desire to enact the kinds of valuable ideas that benefit the lives of many Hoosiers.”

House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1235, authored by the Evansville lawmaker, allows state-chartered credit unions to offer savings promotional raffles. In these raffles, individuals would be rewarded for opening and maintaining savings accounts or participating in financial literacy programs. With each deposit into the account, a person would receive an entry into a raffle with cash prizes.

“The idea behind this legislation came from discussions I have had with constituents about the fact that many people are forced into pursuing high-interest loans to pay for everyday emergencies like a car breaking down or a plumbing problem,” Riecken said. “The core problem here is that people simply are not saving money like they should.

“Through HEA 1235, we can encourage people to get savings accounts that can help when they have unexpected expenses or have a sudden drop in their income,” she continued. “They can never lose their balance and the interest they accrue and they can have the chance to win more money while they learn to save.”

Riecken credited State Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland), chairman of the House Financial Institutions Committee, and State Reps. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) and Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) for helping pass the measure through the House, and State Sens. Travis Holdman (R-Markle), John Broden (D-South Bend) and Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) for getting the bill through the Indiana Senate.

Efforts to regulate motorized scooters, or mopeds, have been a part of Riecken’s agenda the past three sessions. They come in response to alarming statistics that show alarming increases in the numbers of people killed and injured in accidents involving scooters and mopeds over the past decade.

“House Enrolled Act 1343 provides a clear definition of what these vehicles are, requires the owners and operators of mopeds to have proper licensing, and sets up a system to make sure drivers are trained in moped safety,” Riecken said.

“This truly has been a collective effort at many levels, including many in the Vanderburgh County legislative delegation, city and county officials, local law enforcement and those dedicated folks who work for the many neighborhood associations in our area,” she added.

“They were brought together by the concern that something had to be done to stem the tide of injuries and fatalities involving those who ride these motorized scooters,” Riecken concluded. “This year, we have finally succeeded in making our streets significantly safer.”

Evansville Police arrested 36 year old Myles K. Martin on multiple charges after he carjacked a woman and fled from police this morning.

Martin, who is from Owensboro KY, was with an unknown female in the parking lot at 2301 N. Green River Rd at 8:00 Saturday morning. They were sitting in a white passenger car together.

Pennie Hart pulled into the lot to open her business for the day. As Hart parked her SUV, Martin approached her and pointed a handgun at her. He told her to get out of her car. Hart got out and ran into the business. Martin took the SUV and left northbound on Green River Rd. The female in the white car also left the area.
Hart called 911 and gave a description of her Lexus SUV and the plate number. A detective found Martin sitting in the SUV in the Sugar Mill Creek Apartment Complex a few minutes later. Uniformed officers arrived at the apartment complex and tried to arrest Martin. Martin refused to put his hands up where officers could see them and then put the SUV in gear. Martin then tried to flee the scene. Martin hit a parked car, but did not stop. Martin was armed and dangerous and refused to surrender. An officer fired two rounds at the SUV’s tires. One of the tires went flat as Martin continued to flee. Martin drove into a field next to the apartment complex and got stuck. He ran way from the SUV, but was caught at a nearby intersection. The handgun used in the carjacking was found in the SUV.
Martin was charged with:
Armed Robbery B felony
Carjacking with threat of force B felony
Possession of gun by a Convicted Felon B felony
Resisting Law Enforcement C felony
Resisting Law Enforcement D felony
Resisting Law Enforcement A misdemeanor
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia A misdemeanor
