Dear CCO Readers

A lot of information has been going around regarding the recently overturned smoke-free air ordinance by the Indiana Supreme Court. There is one simple solution to all of this; pass a new smoke-free ordinance that includes the casino. Those who work in the smoky environment cannot afford another day of having their health put on the line for a paycheck. In an interview with Tropicana’s general manager Jason Gregorec said, “People have a choice to game or not and with this gamers like adult beverages and like to smoke.” This is an interesting statement considering that Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights says that studies show that 80% of casino patrons do not smoke. He goes on to say that allowing smoking is a “competitive advantage” over the Illinois casino. This is also hard to believe when 73% of Illinois voters support Illinois’s smokefree law that includes casinos, racetracks, and other gaming facilities according to “Commercial tobacco-free Illinois Frequency Questionnaire,” Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, June 1, 2008. Ohio Voters also approved smoke-free casinos in their state survey and Nate Forbes co-owner of Horseshoe Casino Cleveland said that one of the top two comments he has received about the casino is how people are so thankful for it being a completely smoke-free environment.

Gregorec also went on to say how he saw firsthand how the casino industry in Illinois was negatively affected after going smoke free in 2008. This is true but the state of the economy was more to blame and not the smoke free law. The Center for Policy Analysis (CFPA) conducted a survey in 2011 of reasons why Illinois patrons stopped going to the casinos as much and 40% said the cost of gasoline and 35% said it was because of the increased cost of living. Following the recession Illinois unemployment rate went from 6% to 12.4% and the cost of gasoline went up over a dollar a gallon. In this survey not a single person indicated that the smoking ban was the reason for gambling less frequently in Illinois.

Evansville has already proven that we accept the smoke free ordinance and want all workers to have the same chances when it comes to their health. There are more than 500 state-regulated gambling facilities across the United States that are required to be 100% smoke-free indoors. Tropicana needs to get with the times and show that they stand up for their workers and patrons by accepting that the future is smoke-free.

Sincerely,

Vanderburgh County Smoke Free Committee

USI announces third annual Sculpt EVV festival

USI

The third annual Sculpt EVV Community Art and Music Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the corner of S.E. Second Street and Jefferson Avenue in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District in Evansville.

The event is free and open to the public and includes food vendors, an art fair, live music, games, drum lessons with the Boom Squad and more.

Artist and University of Southern Indiana alumnus Mark Brendel and USI students will work with youth to build a neighborhood sculpture incorporating recycled materials that will teach them to play chess as well as serve as a pollinator for hummingbirds and butterflies. They’ll be working from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Other activities include a pop-up African art display of work from USI’s teaching collection; the unveiling of a community mural by respected artist, Eric Braysmith, assistant professor of English, and the reading of a poem written by Marcus Wicker, USI assistant professor of English.

Dr. Hilary Braysmith, USI associate professor of art history and project director for Sculpt EVV, has worked with Evansville Brownfields Corporation to allow students in a summer art class to transform an unoccupied house at 313 Jefferson Avenue into an immersive art experience.

“The house will not function as a gallery to display art but as an artwork,” Braysmith said. “The Brownfields Corporation works with the City of Evansville to acquire, hold and redevelop properties in blighted areas determined by the city. This project enables USI students to practice the rarest form of neighborhood revitalization through aesthetic interventions—the use of a structurally sound, though unoccupied house. Such house projects are extremely rare and I have never heard of one where undergraduates are the designers.”

For more information, find Sculpt EVV on Facebook.

Sponsors of the Sculpt EVV Community Art and Music Festival include the University of Southern Indiana, City of Evansville, The Potter’s Wheel Ministries and Memorial Community Development Corporation.

Event partners are the African American Museum, Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, and the Goosetown Neighborhood Association.

IS IT TRUE May 31, 2014 (Weekend)

IS IT TRUE onn pages 16 & 17 of the 2012 audit there is a section under Note 8 called restatements and there is a table that follows?…in that table there is a net of just over $29 Million in adjustments to the 2011 books made after the fact and tabulated under the heading “PRIOR PERIOD ADJUSTMENTS”?…it looks very much like the Winnecke Administration basically hit the reset button by changing the initial conditions to get the books to balance for 2012?…the SBOA apparently let them get by with the large “prior period adjustment” without taking into account the FASB (Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board) policies on PRIOR PERIOD ADJUSTMENTS?…The 2011 books which can’t be audited per the SBOA now hold all of the skeletons in the City of Evansville’s finances?…it looks like the machine has swept this under the rug unless 2011 can be reopened as it has never been audited period?

IS IT TRUE the FASB states clearly in Section III of its document on audits titled:

Reporting Corrections of Errors and Changes in Accounting Principles
Amending SFFAS No. 7, Accounting for Revenue and Other Financing Sources

that “the unforeseen result is that reporting entities that have material errors in their prior period financial statements are unable to present them for comparative purposes without creating both a dilemma for auditors and confusion for users. The dilemma for the auditors is that they would have to qualify their opinion on the prior period financial statements whether or not they had been restated. If prior period statements were presented that contained a material error, auditors would have to qualify their opinion. On the other hand, if prior period statements were presented and balances had been corrected for an error, auditors would still have to qualify their opinion because such restatement would not be in accordance with the existing standard. The confusion for the user derives from the difficulty inherent in comparing the financial statements for two or more periods when the effect of the error is not shown in the prior periods’ financial statements.

IS IT TRUE we will be looking further into just how clean the claimed clean audit really is in the near future?

IS IT TRUE Mole #41 who has a CPA called the newsroom at Channel 25 yesterday to ask them questions about their reporting of the “CLEAN” audit and they admitted to NOT reading the report?…they also admitted just cutting a pasting what the Mayor’s office gave them onto their website without question?…Mole #41 told them the content of the City of Evansville audit for those who read and understand audits was the worst audit report he has ever read in his 30 years as a CPA?…he told them they needed to call a local CPA or US/IU/UE’s accounting deportment and get an independent viewpoint?…his opinion of the Channel 25 news crew is that there is nothing nefarious going on but they are all just 20 something interns who are clueless and have no funding, no follow up, no skepticism of the powers that be when they blow sunshine up everyone’s rear end?

Democrats to meet for convention Saturday in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS – Democrats will pick nominees for state treasurer, auditor and secretary of state this Saturday in downtown Indianapolis – although none of the nominations will be contested.

“Were going to have about 1,800 folks in attendance that are delegates,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody. “I expect a lot of energy and a lot excitement moving this fall.”

The nominations will include:

Mike Boland, treasurer

Boland was a longtime Illinois state representative fromm 1995-2010. He is most known for speaking out about a scandal involving admissions at the University of Illinois. Boland left the Illinois House to run for lieutenant governor in 2010 but lost the bid. In 2011 he ran for the state senate and lost again. He moved to Fishers with his wife Mary to be closer to his kids and grandchildren. He said he is running to bring balance and accountability to the state.

Mike Claytor, auditor

Claytor graduated from Ball State in 1974 and became a licensed certified public accountant shortly after in 1979. In 1983 he obtained a law degree from the Indianapolis School of Law. In 1989, Claytor began work at Crow Chizek, now Crow Horwath. Three years later, he became a partner. Claytor said he is running to balance the books of the state auditor and balance the political power in Indiana.

Beth White, secretary of state

A Bloomington native, White is now the clerk in Marion County, the state’s largest county. She is also the secretary of the local election board and a member of the Indiana Public School Education Foundation Board. White created yVote!, a voter education program to encourage eligible high school students to vote and has registered more then 2,5000 student voters. She also attends naturalization ceremonies and has helped registered 6,000 new Hoosiers to vote.

Zody predicted Saturday’s nominating process will be a smooth one.

“We’ve got great candidates, people with professional experience running for statewide office,” he said.

Democrats will meet from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Indiana Convention Center following a number of caucuses and other meetings. Republicans are planning a convention later this month, where delegates will also nominate candidates for secretary of state, treasurer and auditor.

Neither party will have a statewide candidate seeking reelection in the fall – although Secretary of State Connie Lawson will be the incumbent in her race. She was appointed to the post after the GOP’s last nominee – Charlie White – had to resign after his election following a conviction on voter fraud charges.

“I think the playing field is a little more even than some people might think,” Zody said. “So we’ll keep the energy up.”

EVSC to Host Bus Driver Career Fair

0

EVSC

Are you looking for a career change? Driving our future with part-time hours and full-time benefits is the message that the EVSC’s Office of Transportation wants people to know about school bus drivers. To help get that message out and to find new drivers, the EVSC is hosting a Bus Driver Career Fair on Wednesday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at Bosse High School, located at 1300 Washington Avenue.
The career fair will give interested individuals an opportunity to get behind the wheel of a school bus and talk with EVSC Bus Transportation management. EVSC trainers also will be available to answer any questions related to driving a school bus such as work schedule, licensing, school bus laws and more. In addition, the EVSC will be holding on-the-spot interviews for interested individuals.
To attend the event, individuals must have a current driver’s license. No CDL is required at this time. Once hired, the EVSC will train individuals and assist them in getting their CDL.
As a school bus driver, individuals work from approximately 6 to 8 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. with additional hours available, if interested. Full-time benefits including medical insurance, holiday pay, personal and sick leave and more are available to EVSC drivers.
For more information, visit www.evscschools.com and see the link for Bus Driver Career Fair under Community at the top, or call 435-1BUS.

Spangler supports increase in the Minimum Wage.

1

GetAttachment.aspx

“Look how well our stock market is doing. It is now time for the hourly minimum wage worker to share in this prosperity”
Indiana’s 8th district Congressional Candidate Tom Spangler announced today that he fully supports an increase in the minimum wage to at least $10.10 per hour.
“In reviewing current economic data it certainly dismisses the Republican Congressional obstructionist position that an increase in the minimum wage would hurt and even cause a decline in job growth stated Spangler. “ At the beginning of 2014, thirteen states increased their minimum wage either by passed legislation and or automatically increased in line with inflation. There was little to no evidence for the claim that raising the minimum wage threatens job creation efforts.
“We need to focus and have a caring and compassionate attitude towards the hard working Hoosier families that are earning minimum wage and having to work two jobs, and still are not able to rise above the poverty level. I have always lived by God’s law that a worker is worthy of his wages. When businesses, large and small reaps large profits and are not willing to fairly share with their hard working employee’s that is nothing but greed”, stated Spangler.
There are two other changes that he would like to see happen from our Congress. We need to tie any and all future automatic increases to the minimum wage to the rate of inflation which will give more security to the Hoosier worker instead of being a political football for our career and do nothing politicians. Additionally, change the name to “Sustainable Wage”. This will bring the right identification and help our hard working Hoosiers get closer to self-sufficiency.
