Freedom, IN- Republican Congressional Candidate Andrew McNeil seeks to continue his Walk Across the District by spending one full day in each of the 19 Counties included in Indiana’s 8th District.
Beginning March 31st, every County from Vanderburgh to Vermillion will receive one day devoted to visiting with the residents of the County. To accomplish this, McNeil is scheduling meet and greets at locally owned restaurants, visits to historical landmarks throughout the district, and interviews with local newspapers. No matter what McNeil schedules in each County, he will continue to go door to door in each city he visits.
McNeil has focused on making the cornerstone of his campaign direct interaction with the voter. Every day sees McNeil loading himself—and often his family—into his truck to drive to a new town in the District. Once there, Andrew and the family will begin to canvas the area, introducing themselves to every individual and business they come across.
“Americans have become accustomed to Congressmen who are distant and hard to reach.†McNeil remarked while driving to a meet and greet in Clay City. “It’s a shame. Congressmen are known as representatives for a reason. Visibility and engagement should be the two defining qualities of a representative. That is what I will to bring to the table when elected.â€

Governor Mike Pence has designated April 2014 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and Child Abuse Prevention Month in Indiana. Albion Fellows Bacon Center joins rape crisis centers and child advocacy centers across the state in commemorating Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Awareness Month to promote awareness and encourage support of these issues. This year’s theme, “Healthy Sexuality and Young People: It’s time to Talk About It!,†is motivating Albion Fellows Bacon Center to participate in the following events: April 1: Day of Action, April 6th-12th: National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 7 & 8: Let’s “ACT OUT†for a Change, April 8: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes and April 24, 2014: Take Back the Night. Individual Press Releases will be distributed for each event.
According to a CDC report released in 2010 Indiana ranks second in the nation for high school females in grades 9-12 indicating that they have been victims of sexual assault. Â In Indiana one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually assaulted before age eighteen. Â If this type of violence was classified as a disease it would be at epidemic levels.
Sexual violence is a form of oppression, and it is linked to all other forms of oppression. In order to create a world without sexual violence, it is imperative that each of us takes a stand against all forms of oppression – whether based on gender, age, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, ability or economic class. “It’s time for all of us to stand up and speak out against sexual violence. This is a societal problem that is impacting everyone,†commented Anita Carpenter, CEO of INCASA In order to foster healthy communities, all citizens must support the effort to end sexual violence and child abuse every month of the year.

An exciting Floral Exhibition by Joanne Scott Massey will open on Saturday April 5, with a public reception from 1-4 p.m. in the Riverwind Gallery at 10400 W. Indiana 662 in Newburgh.
Joanne is a realist painter from Evansville who has become known for illuminating the delicate details in her lush florals. Her art has been said to have a meditative and reflective effect on the viewer. Many of her signature floral paintings are featured in the permanent collection of Deaconess Gateway Hospital on the 4th and 5th floors. More of her work is in the downtown Deaconess hospital and at the Communities of Solarbron. Joanne’s art is also in many private collections.
A large 30†x 40†acrylic painting titled “Pink Inspiration†painted by Joanne, is being donated by John M. Lawrence of Newburgh to benefit the Susan G. Komen, Evansville Tri-State Affiliate. An auction of “Pink Inspiration†will take place at the reception on Saturday April 5, 1-4 p.m. The opening bid will start at $1,800.00 and the proceeds will be donated by Mr. Lawrence to Komen Evansville Tri-State. IS IT TRUE that a boycott is an act of voluntarily abstaining from using, buying, or dealing with a person, organization, or country as an expression of protest, usually for social or political reasons?…it has become obvious during the last three days that there is a boycott of sorts forming against the CCO as we have had several well timed inquiries about canceling existing ads that are under binding contracts?…this has never ever happened in the history of this publication?…last Wednesday night, the CCO published a 3 minute audio recording of County Commissioner Marsha Abell who was heard to say that “hi tech computer people don’t produce one dime” and that such jobs are not what is needed in Vanderburgh County?…we also published the part of the speech before a partisan Republican crowd that expressed a preference for “jobs that make something”?…our publication sparked sharp retribution from the Republican Chairman who proceeded to convene a two hour meeting of the Republican Central Committee?…that shortly after that meeting was adjourned we received cancellation of ad inquiries from a couple of our long term customers most of whom are well paid vendors to the government of Vanderburgh County?…that means that Commissioner Abell controls the goose that is laying the golden eggs for these advertisers?…we wonder if the timing of this meeting of the Republican Central Committee and this boycott of our advertising is coincidence or is it orchestrated?
IS IT TRUE if this political boycott is orchestrated by the Republican Central Committee then it is a manipulation of the free markets in the City of Evansville for the political purpose to try to shut down a private for-profit business?…we ask our attorney Scott Danks to start exploring the legality of such an action and will take any actions necessary to recover any damages that the CCO suffers as a result of political boycott?…the long term loyal advertisers in the CCO need to understand that they are being manipulated by the Republican Central Committee’s bullying tactics and respond appropriately?…they also need to understand that boycotts are a two way proposition and that as ads disappear it will be obvious to the 39,450 unique viewers that the CCO has just in the last month and the 144,229 unique viewers we have had in the last year just exactly which of our long term advertisers have cowered before the admonishments of the Republican Central Committee?…it is possible that supporters of the CCO whose sole purpose to exist is to push for GOOD PUBLIC POLICY will choose to sort of boycott those businesses?…it will also be interesting to see just how these long term advertisers will dance a different dance in the event that Commissioner Abell does not win the primary against Bruce Ungenthiem and no longer controls the golden goose?…that answer will be coming in 5 weeks?…short term actions often cloud the judgement of some and damage long term goals?
IS IT TRUE in spite of any short term disruption to our cash flow that results as a result of any alleged politically orchestrated boycott, the CCO has no intention of ever compromising our commitment to expose political malfeasance for the purpose of leading Evansville and Vanderburgh toward a future where GOOD PUBLIC POLICY replaces back room GOOD OLD BOY deals?…the CCO has continued in spite of adversaries who have resorted to many harassing and threatening phone calls in the middle of the night, efforts to blunt advertising, stalking issues and even an explicit death threat on this writer four years ago?…we power on and add readers in spite of all of these things and will continue to do so?…we have not and never will allow and advertiser or a bully to intimidate us from doing what we do best?…that commitment and our willingness to be maligned by the powers that be without fading in reporting things like the back room meeting to take away your Homestead Tax Credit (Marsha Abell and Mayor Winnecke were there), the McCurdy Fiasco, the delusions of the Weinzapfel Administration regarding a downtown convention hotel, etc, etc, etc?…intimidation and threats did not silence us before and they will not now?…in ten short years the CCO has grown from having very few readers to having over 2 Million page views a year from nearly 150,000 (adult population of the entire county) different readers?…this growth happened because we are filling a NEED FOR HONESTY IN EXPOSING BAD PUBLIC POLICY?…this is our task, this is what we do, and a handful of advertisers who seem to be fearful enough of the retribution of a political party central committee to abandon their ability to reach this audience may just learn that boycott is a two edged sword?
IS IT TRUE we are changing our long term policy of not endorsing political candidates for office and are presently working on forming a political nonpartisan editorial board made up of distinguished individuals to endorse candidates who are most likely to further “good public policy” for the betterment of this community? Â …we shall be making an announcement next week who has accepted our invitation to serve of this board?
On Wednesday March 26, 2014, I had the pleasure of attending the Vanderburgh County Federated Republican Women’s candidate night at the Evansville Country Club. Each candidate received 5 minutes to speak and most of them did a very good job. At that meeting Ms Abell made some controversial comments that I have been asked to comment on.
First, Ms. Abell stated “This community cannot survive on retired people. We (retired people) don’t put into the system what we pull outâ€. I strongly disagree. Like many retired people, I still own property and still pay local real estate taxes which are the main source of monetary support for county government. In addition, as a retired person, I still have income from retirement pensions, 401 K’s, and soon social security, etc and I pay income taxes including the county option income tax on all that income that supports the county as well. As for “pulling out of the systemâ€, as like many other retired people, I rarely use the two largest users of the county funds (Schools and Law enforcement/ courts) so I believe I am definitely putting more in than I am pulling out. In addition, like many other seasoned citizens I frequently volunteer to serve the community in various capacities that support the community as a whole. So I consider it an insult to our “seasoned citizens†to say that our community cannot survive on retired people. I believe the seasoned citizens are the foundation of our community.
Second, Ms Abell’s statement that “High tech computer people, do not produce a dime†for our community. As a former manager of Automation at Mead Johnson, I recruited and hired many “High Tech computer people†and I can assure you they all produced more than their share of revenue for the company and the community. High tech jobs are usually also high paying jobs and these people buy high priced homes and pay higher property taxes and higher county income taxes that support the county government. In addition, these “High Tech computer people†spend money on services such as restaurants, banks, and retail stores to help support our community.
It is unfortunate that Ms Abell does not understand that the seasoned citizens are the foundation of our community and the high tech jobs could well be the future of our economy.
I would hope she reconsiders her statement and issues an apology to both of these valuable groups in our community.
