IS IT TRUE December 29, 2014

30

IS IT TRUE WHEN THE PEOPLE FEAR THE GOVERNMENT THERE IS TYRANNY? …WHEN THE GOVERNMENT FEARS THE PEOPLE THERE IS LIBERTY?

IS IT TRUE that during the Christmas holiday the shots fired count in Evansville continues to roll up the numbers in what has turned out to be the year of the bullet in Evansville?…this time the shots actually rang out and hit the Lincoln Elementary School which was recently in the headlines for getting an F for six years in a row for academic performance?…Lincoln was criticized harshly by the Indiana State Board of Education, that turned and ran like a rabbit running from a wolf when it came to taking over the failing school?…in all fairness with the violence, the bullets, and the atmosphere in that neighborhood it is a wonder these children have enough security in their lives to learn their ABCs?…we really wish we had an answer to this problem and to the other situations in Evansville that are heading down this path?…it may be time to close Lincoln and get these children out of there and into a secure atmosphere where they can learn?…it is not worth experimenting with a failed educational system to the point that a generation of children is rendered incapable of taking advantages of the educational opportunities that America is supposed to offer?

IS IT TRUE in what was one of the most chilling string of words uttered in Evansville in recent history, an accused shooter intimated that he would be emulating the murder of two New York City policemen and “put some wings on pigs” right here in Evansville?…this is the kind of attitude that accelerates the decline of schools like Lincoln and acts as repellent to people considering living in Evansville or refurbishing older homes in challenged areas?…arenas, hotels, and other fun and games distractions from the realities that need to be fixed?…the claim that this is “a great place to raise kids” is literally an insulting platitude when you examine life just a short walk from the 4 time failed hotel project?

IS IT TRUEit has been reported that the advocates for a downtown hotel have decided after 6 years of failures to “think for a couple of weeks” before trying something else?…we are certainly pleased to hear that the light bulb has finally turned on among that trinity of geniuses?…here are some hints that these people should be considering?…downsizing the number of rooms to the 150 that private investors said downtown Evansville could support is the first step?…they should also make sure that the design is expandable should the concept actually work?…the assertion that the room number has to be 240+ to attract any conventions is simply nonsense and this assumption more than any other has prevented success in finding a qualified developer of means?…the second thing to consider is to find a mechanism for a future developer to monetize an incentive so that no up front public dollars are needed?…something magical happens when direct subsidies are eliminated?…that gets rid of Davis Bacon jurisdiction over the project and gets rid of the Project Labor Agreement (PLA)?…that gets rid of prevailing wages and the crushing paperwork requirements that come with them?…if our elected leaders will bite the bullet and completely restructure the financial package they will most likely find success?…if they just do the same thing they have been for 6’years, another failure is on the horizon?

IS IT TRUE we checked the attendance numbers for the Evansville Icemen and learned that while falling slightly the Icemen are holding onto an attendance that is about 4,500 people per game?…as we are aware that free passes are about as hard to get ones hands on as litter in downtown Evansville what would be really interesting would be the paid attendance?…the Evansville Aces also seem to have stabilized in attendance to slightly under the 4,500 that the Icemen draw?…the Aces best year for attendance at Ford Center is still lower than their worst year at Roberts Stadium?…it seems that shiny objects with unrealistic projections like the Ford Center always seem to lose their luster when the golden shovels have been put away?…is there any accountability for the team that fluffed up the Ford Center projections to pull the wool over the taxpayer’s eyes?…the answer is NO?

Accounting team places third in national competition

0
The University of Southern Indiana’s Romain College of Business placed third in the 2014 American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) case competition in Washington, D.C. on December 19.In the AICPA competition, USI’s students competed against more than 200 teams from universities nationwide. The USI team members were accounting majors Brooke Neuhoff of Huntingburg, Erica Oberbroeckling of Evansville, and Brent Williams of Newburgh.  Another team member, Stevie Lynch of Tennyson, majored in both accounting and finance.  Timothy Bryan, instructor in accounting, served as faculty advisor for the team.

“We are very proud of this student team and what they were able to accomplish,” said Dr. Brian McGuire, associate dean of the Romain College of Business and director of accounting programs.  “The current case was certainly different from those assigned in prior years, as it was a managerial accounting case, and it encompassed a wide range of topics that were covered in several accounting courses.  This year’s case challenged our students to integrate knowledge from a range of topic areas which they had to integrate into a viable solution.”

This is the second year in a row that USI has been a finalist in the AICPA case competition. USI’s Accounting Program has experienced great success with its students in recent case competitions.  In the last decade, USI accounting students have won nine case competitions sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and the Indiana CPA Society.

BREAKING NEWS: Gail Riecken to Announce If She Will Be A Candidate For Mayor of Evansville On January 10, 15

67

The City County Observer has just learned that State Representative Gail Riecken will be holding a news conference on January 10 at the CK Newsome Center,to officially announce if she will be a Democratic candidate for Mayor of Evansville in 2015. The time of the news conference is 11:15 am.

This announcement could open the door to an historic election in Evansville, as her candidacy will give Evansville the chance to elect its first woman to the Mayor’s office in the 202 Year history of this great city. Mrs. Riecken has served as the District 77 Representative in the Indiana Legislature since 2009, and was also on the Evansville City Council early in her political career

We hear that local rank and file Democrats are looking to State Representative  Riecken to help unite their party, which has been splintered since the last City election. At that time, a group of Democrats broke off from their party to support Republican Lloyd Winnecke over the Democrat, the late Rick Davis. The party “rebellion” and low voter participation allowed Winnecke to win the now financially  embattled Mayor’s office.

State Representative Riecken has earned a solid reputation as an effective office-holder who is highly responsive to the needs and wishes of her constituents.

She is a graduate of Bosse High School and Indiana University, and is a licensed Marine Pilot. She has served as a Neighborhood Coordinator for the Community Action Program of Evansville and Executive Director of the Evansville Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as piloting the Winnie Mae on the Ohio River.

Gail has been involved in too many community service projects to list, but she has a special interest in protecting our children and in historic preservation. She is a co-founder of Ark Crisis Nursery and has served on the board of Family and Children’s Service. She has been a coordinator of the Riverside Neighborhood Association and sat on the board of the Evansville Preservation Alliance and Hope of Evansville.

Gail has been married for more than forty years to Ron Riecken, who built Inland Marina with his brother, Carl in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He served three tours of duty in Viet Nam, as well. She and Ron are the parents of two daughters, Julia Belle Riecken Langerak and Katie Riecken. Parker. They have three (3) grandchildren, Joey, Martha and George

If State Representative Gail Riecken decides to run for Mayor of Evansville we predict this will be the most expensive and spirited Mayoral race in Evansville 202 year history. We are looking forward to see if the voters of this great city will elect its first woman mayor in our 202 year history.
