Energize Evansville’s monthly “Fitness in the Park” program will offer two fitness opportunities at two different locations on May 17 in conjunction with the Deaconess Healthier U Walks and the annual Pushups for Charity fundraising event.

Fitness in the Park will start with the Healthier U Walk in partnership with Deaconess Health System from 9 to 10 a.m. at Wesselman Park, 551 N. Boeke Rd. The walk will be followed by a Boot Camp exercise session from 10 to 11 a.m. with instructors provided by the YMCA.

The two-hour fitness session is an opportunity for residents to participate in Pushups for Charity, which benefits wounded veterans and their families. Individuals will also have the option to participate in Pushups for Charity at Wesselman Park or Downtown on the Evansville Riverfront during River Run festivities.

Two ESG Security Guards accused of pocketing money while collecting parking fees at city-owned garages

Evansville Police have completed an investigation into missing money from two city-owned parking garages. The thefts occurred on Friday May 2nd. The thefts were discovered by the manager of the city parking garages when he returned to work on Monday May 5th and audited the accounts.
Based on the number of cars that parked in the garages during the Friday night event at the Ford Center, the manager believed the amount of money turned in by two ESG employees was very low. The city has a contract with ESG Security to collect money at the garages. ESG also provides security at the Ford Center during events.
There were 2 ESG employees at the Sycamore St garage and 1 at the Locust St garage. One of the ESG workers at the Sycamore garage turned in the exact amount of cash to match up with the number of cars that entered the garage at their gate. The other 2 workers were short by over $400 each.
Police were notified and began a theft investigation. Investigators determined that the two ESG workers did not turn in the parking fees for numerous cars that entered through their gates. Investigators also learned that the two suspects are dating and live together. Police have completed a case file requesting arrest warrants for both suspects charging them with theft, CL D Felony. Their names will be released if they are charged in this case.

Jenkins and Vilneff Earn Top Senior Awards

Kelby Jenkins and Quinn Vilneff were honored on Thursday
 As we round the homestretch of the 2013-14 academic year, the University of Evansville took time out to honor a pair of senior student-athletes at the annual leadership banquet last week.

Kelby Jenkins and Quinn Vilneff were recognized for their efforts in their respective sports as well as in school and the community.  Jenkins earned the Lois Patton Award while Vilneff was the recipient of the Ralph H. Coleman Award.  They are presented annually to the top senior female and male scholar-athletes at the University of Evansville.

Cross country runner Kelby Jenkins received the Patton Award following a record-setting career with the Aces.  As a senior, Jenkins won four championships while finishing second on two occasions.  In her final 5K race, Jenkins set the program record at 17:27.27.  The time was set in her final home event – the 2013 UE Invitational.  She was a 2-time MVC All-Conference Team member while also making the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team on two occasions.

A double-major at UE (Accounting and Finance with a minor in Economics), Jenkins has posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.  Outside of the classroom, the has been an asset to the community, helping with the Boys and Girls Club (building new walking trails), the Relay for Life, has acted as a student tutor for a student with a visual disability and has also been a supplementary instructor in economics.

Also making a significant impact in all facets in his time at UE is men’s golfer Quinn Vilneff.  The Sports Management major has finished with a 3.91 GPA in his three years at Evansville.  Those efforts culminated in him being named the recipient of the 2013 MVC Elite 18 Award.  At the time, he was just the second student-athlete at UE to do so.

Vilneff garnered several accolades as a junior including a Cleveland Golf All-American, MVC All-Conference Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team.  He is on pace to record one of the top three stroke averages in program history.

A native of Canada, Vilneff has worked hard to bring hockey awareness to the City of Evansville.  He has volunteered well over 400 hours of service to teaching and promoting hockey to the youth of the city and Swonder Ice Rink.  He is currently working with the rink with their spring league.

Both Jenkins and Vilneff have had stellar careers on the course and in the classroom at UE.  They epitomize what being a student-athlete at the University of Evansville is all about.

WATERLOO, Ill.—University of Southern Indiana sophomore Anastasia Carter became the third women’s golfer in school history to capture a Great Lakes Valley Conference individual title Sunday as she finished first out of 70 competitors at the GLVC Women’s Championship.

Carter, who earned All-GLVC honors for the second straight year with the effort, matched the Screaming Eagles’ 36-hole record with her two-day score of 145. She shot a tournament-best and two-under-par 70 in the first round Saturday to open a two-stroke lead; then carded a three-over-par 75 in Sunday’s closing round to earn a five-stroke victory over the University of Indianapolis’s Jaclyn Schindler, who was second with a 150 (72-78).

A graduate of Penn High School, Carter led all players with 26 pars and tied for the tournament lead with five birdies. She is the first USI women’s player since Angela Dehning in 2010 to capture the GLVC individual title. Alisha Luigs won the GLVC individual title in 2004, while USI captured its first and only team title in 2011.

As a team, the Eagles finished second in the 14-team field after posting the low round of 310 Sunday. USI, which posted a 317 Saturday and a 36-hole score of 627, finished nine strokes back of first-place UIndy and 11 strokes in front of third-place Drury University. USI was third at the midway point.

Freshman Allison Koester led the Eagles in the final round as she shot a 73 to lead the entire field Sunday. Koester finished in a tie for 11th with a two-day score of 159.

Senior Kaelyn Lingenfelter matched her opening-round 80 Sunday to finish in a tie for 13th with a two-day score of 160, while junior Griffin Glasscock shot 82 in both rounds to finish in a tie for 24th. Senior Taylor Merriss tied for 44th with a two-day score of 175 (85-90).

USI is hoping its effort this weekend will be enough to carry it into the NCAA II East Super-Regional for the third straight season and the ninth time in the last 11 years—the Eagles have sent either a team or an individual in each of the last 10 seasons.

An announcement for the qualifying teams and individuals will be made later this week. The NCAA II East Super-Regional is May 4-6 at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
