March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time when we join with our partners to educate the public about developmental disabilities and highlight the many ways people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.
Throughout this month, we will be using each issue of From Jake’s Desk to highlight various state programs and initiatives designed to serve individuals and families affected by developmental disabilities. From ABLE savings programs to housing projects tailored for those with IDD, we are dedicated to helping Hoosiers find the opportunity to live in safe, affordable, quality housing.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – University of Southern Indiana Softball suffered a pair of setbacks on Saturday to open its trip at The Spring Games, falling 7-1 to Quinnipiac University and 3-0 to Western Michigan University.

In Saturday’s first game, Quinnipiac (4-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Quinnipiac quickly grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-clearing double.

Down 4-0 going into the third frame, USI (3-9) scored a run on an infield RBI hit by senior outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana). However, Quinnipiac answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 6-1 advantage and did not look back the rest of the game.

USI scored one run on three hits, while Quinnipiac tallied seven runs off six hits.

In the circle, sophomore pitcher Raegan Gibson (Louisville, Kentucky) was charged with the loss and dropped to 0-2 this season. The right-hander allowed five runs in two innings pitched. Quinnipiac freshman pitcher Lauren Hilliard picked up her second win this season, tossing the last four innings scoreless.

In the afternoon contest against Western Michigan (5-5), it took a couple of innings for a run to score. Western Michigan threatened in the second inning with runners at second and third, but Southern Indiana got out of the jam.

The Broncos broke through in the third inning with a pair of runs off a two-out RBI single and a two-out RBI double. In the bottom of the third inning, USI had a chance to respond with runners at second and third and only one out, but the Screaming Eagles could not scratch across a run.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, USI had another opportunity with the bases loaded but stranded the runners. Southern Indiana could not muster any momentum from that point.

USI was held scoreless with six hits, and Western Michigan posted three runs on nine hits. At the plate, junior pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) went 3-3 for the Screaming Eagles.

Newman also pitched all seven innings for USI, falling to 3-4 this season with the loss. Western Michigan’s junior pitcher Kailey O’Connor moved to 2-1 following the shutout effort.

USI takes the field again at The Spring Games on Sunday morning. The Screaming Eagles square off against Monmouth University at 9 a.m. CT and Sacred Heart University shortly after at 11:30 a.m. CT.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball held off the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 8-6, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 4-6 to start the season, while St. Thomas goes 4-6.

USI jumped out in the bottom of the second when the Screaming Eagles took advantage of three walks and a pair of singles to score twice with two outs. Junior catcher Joe Ricchio (Pleasant Prairie, Illinois) singled in junior first baseman Thomas Emerich (Ava, Missouri), who had walked and stole second, while senior leftfielder Trent Robinson (Louisville, Kentucky) singled in junior second baseman Lane Crowden (Jackson, Missouri), who walked and advanced to second on Ricchio’s base hit.

After St. Thomas narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a tally in the top of the third, USI exploded for three more runs to boost the lead to 5-1. Freshman leftfielder Cameron Boyd (Villa Hills, Kentucky) scored on a wild pitch before Ricchio, who was two-for-three with three RBI, struck again with a two-run double to close out the scoring in the third.

The Tommies cut the Eagles margin to 5-3 after a un in the top sixth, USI rebound with a run in the bottom half of the frame to re-extend the margin to 6-3. Crowden scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by junior centerfielder Terrick Thompson-Allen (Sioux City, Iowa).

USI sealed the victory in the bottom of the seven to lead 8-3. Emerich started the scoring with a RBI-single through the left side, while Crowden pushed the eighth run across with a single to center.

The Tommies would sliced the USI lead to 8-6 with a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth before the Eagles closed the door on the 8-6 victory.

On the mound, junior right-hander Gavin Seebold (Jeffersonville, Indiana) went five innings in his first start of the year. Seebold (1-1) allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four in frames.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 5-ranked Indiana will have 18 finalists competing during the last night of the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday (March 2) inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University.
The Hoosiers have a 176-point lead over second place in the team standings going into the final night as they look to capture their third-straight Big Ten Championship. With the women’s team title a week ago, it would also mark the greater program’s second “double†in school history and first since 2019.
IU’s list of Saturday night participants includes 13 in championship heats, four in consolation finals and one C finalist. Indiana can also earn points out of the 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Hoosiers have the top seed in four events: the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, platform diving and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Senior Brendan Burns will attempt to win the 200 back, 200 fly double for a fourth-straight season. He gave himself the platform to do so in prelims as the top qualifier in the 200 back (1:40.88) and No. 2 seed in the 200 fly (1:41.57). Burns is the only Big Ten male to win both races in a single meet – Indiana’s Kate Fesenko was the first athlete and only woman to do so, completing the feat in 2010. A win in the 200 fly would make Burns the first Big Ten athlete to become a five-time Big Ten Champion in an individual event.
Junior Kai van Westering is the No. 2 seed in the 200 back behind Burns, touching in 1:40.91 during prelims. Friday’s 100-yard butterfly champion, Tomer Frankel ranked No. 5 in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.40.
Indiana will swim in the middle four lanes of the 200-yard breaststroke championship final. Junior Josh Matheny (1:52.06), senior Jassen Yep (1:52.70), freshman Toby Barnett (1:54.02) and senior Maxwell Reich (1:54.17) earned the top-four seeds in the morning. Sophomore Collin McKenzie (1:55.96) will swim the consolation heat, and Luke Barr (1:56.37) will score out of the C final.
For the second-straight night, Indiana will have three athletes in the top diving final. Friday’s 3-meter champion and reigning NCAA platform diving champion will represent IU on 10-meter Saturday night, joined by sophomore Maxwell Weinrich and fellow junior Quinn Henninger. Dash Glasberg finished 15th in qualifying to get into the consolation final.
