USI honored with Champions of Diversity award
The University of Southern Indiana has been selected as one of 14 individuals, organizations and institutions recognized by Indiana Minority Business Magazine (IMBM) for its Champions of Diversity award. The award was presented January 16 at the 10th Annual Champions of Diversity Awards Dinner in Indianapolis.
USI was selected by the Champions of Diversity Nomination Committee, made up of both community and civic leaders. The award is given to individuals and institutions that have “shown tremendous effort in the areas of diversity and inclusion.†USI’s nomination was based on several criteria, including that President Linda L. M. Bennett is a woman and, by definition, a minority, as well as the University’s strategic initiatives to increase diversity on its campus, including the University Council on Inclusion and recent efforts to attract more international students.
“Honoring such a deserving class of individuals and organizations over the years has been a true pleasure,†said IMBM president Shannon Williams. “Every year I am amazed at the level of commitment to diversity and inclusion the awardees exhibit and 2015’s ceremony will be no different. I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate 10 years.â€

REP. GAIL RIECKEN OUTLINES 2015 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
INDIANAPOLIS – During the 2015 session of the Indiana General Assembly, State Representative Gail Riecken (D-Evansville) will focus on several bills that would positively impact constituents in House District 77 while providing benefits to Hoosiers statewide.
Rep. Riecken is encouraging legislators to consider bills to address the ongoing concerns created by vacant and abandoned housing, provide an option for riverboat casinos to be land-based, and fund the construction for a state-of-the-art medical school in the Evansville area.
One bill would speed up the process where a legally defined abandoned and vacant property would be ready for new owners a year earlier. The bill clears up bill drafting errors of law enacted last session that prevented cities like Evansville from using the new law.
“Vacant and abandoned housing in Indiana is more than just an eyesore. These properties are linked to increased crime and cause neighborhood property values to decrease,†explained Riecken. “Demolition is a significant expense for cities, and sometimes the money just isn’t there.†We find some of these properties are valuable to our history and we would rather rehab them but can’t get them through the system before they fall into costly repair.
Land based casinos are getting another look in the Legislature. Lawmakers looking more favorably on land based casinos are interested in preserving the revenue stream to the state and understand our casinos must be more competitive with other states. Evansville’s riverboat is the oldest in the state. The hope is that developing a new, vibrant casino on land would add revenue.
“Constituents of District 77 have spoken and what they’re saying is this: drop the dock and move Tropicana Evansville on land!†said Riecken.
IU School of Medicine Dean Jay Hess has endorsed downtown Evansville as the future site for an ultramodern medical school. The facility will also have a high-tech simulation center for teaching and research, and programs such as nursing and related fields, physical therapy and the four-year medical school programs.
“Having a medical school in Evansville that introduces the model of a consortium of four colleges and universities in one unique program and headed by Indiana University will provide expanded professional opportunities for students and Hoosiers in our state,†Riecken said. “There are still some details to work out, but the proposal is gaining momentum locally and statewide.â€
Proponents of the plan are working to secure funding for the school in the biennial state budget that the Legislature must pass in the 2015 session.
Rep. Riecken said she also will ask the Legislature to study two topics of concern. “We need a summer study committee to hear testimony about juveniles, who are incarcerated and deemed incorrigible, being serviced by the Department of Child Services instead of the Department of Correction,†she said. “I also want us to examine the definitions of child abuse and neglect that have evolved since 2006 and determine if the legal definitions are adequately protecting the safety of our children and meeting their needs for services in today’s environment.â€
In response to an ongoing local controversy, she has also introduced legislation that would give area residents a greater voice in determining a local issue, giving residential neighbors more control in the determination of a renewal permit for a liquor store at its existing location.

TV Commercial to Air in New York During AFC Championship Game Promoting Indiana as a State That Works
INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mike Pence will invite New York entrepreneurs to consider Indiana for business growth in a 30-second television commercial airing Sunday during the AFC Championship football game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots.
“Indiana is in the spotlight,†said Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce. “From our mighty Colts to our robust economy, in Indiana we’ve earned success by building a state where big goals are within reach. While high-tax states like New York restrict growth goals for business, in Indiana we’ve built a business climate where balanced budgets and affordability promote job creation. When business leaders across the country and around the world hear that message, it resonates, together helping make our state even stronger.â€
The commercial will air after 6:27 p.m. before the Colts-Patriots game in the New York City media market, the largest market in the nation reaching more than 15 million adults. It features Pence discussing Indiana’s vast opportunities for companies looking to start or grow a business.
“On behalf of established Indiana companies, our outstanding workforce and thriving communities, we invite you to explore the vast opportunities Indiana has to offer…We’re building economic strength right here and right now in a state that works,†said Pence in the commercial.
Pence led a jobs and economic development mission to New York City in May 2014, meeting with location advisors and company executives with site selection responsibilities to discuss relocating or growing operations in Indiana.
Airing as part of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation’s (IEDC) ongoing marketing campaign A State That Works targeting high-tax states, thecommercial follows a January 2014 full-page advertisement in the New York Times promoting Indiana’s business climate, along with six digital billboards in high-traffic locations that ran near MetLife Stadium for two weeks in the run-up to Super Bowl XLVIII.
The commercial, with a longer version of the video is available here, was paid for through private donations to the Indiana Economic Development Foundation.
While New York is continually ranked as one of the most burdensome states for business, Indiana shines as home to one of the strongest business climates in the nation. With its pro-business, low-tax environment, Indiana finished best in the Midwest in multiple business climate rankings, including Area Development magazine’s Top States for Doing Business survey, Pollina Corporate’s Top 10 Pro-Business States for 2014 study and the Tax Foundation’s 2015 State Business Tax Climate Index.
