Sheriff Dave Wedding recently met with Indiana Legislators at the state capitol building in Indianapolis.  During the visit the Indiana Sheriff’s Association was honored by the Indiana Senate for its service to the State of Indiana. State Senator Jim Arnold (D) presented a resolution recognizing the 85th anniversary of the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association.

The event was organized by the Indiana Sheriff’s Association and provided an opportunity for Sheriffs from across the state to meet with their legislators and other elected state officials.  Sheriff Wedding stated, “The visit afforded me with the opportunity to meet with Auditor Suzanne Crouch, who is from Vanderburgh County and has been a long time friend of the Sheriff’s Office.”

Early Stage Business Development Course

With a generous grant from the Vectren Foundation, and an additional targeted grant from Fifth Third Bank, the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville is once again in the position to provide scholarships to regional residents who have ideas that will lead to new business startups, and therefore support economic development and growth for our community.

The Growth Alliance provided 14 scholarships in 2014 for the Kauffman Foundation’s FastTrac NewVenture program and will be awarding 16 scholarships in 2015. Each scholarship has a value of $1,000.

The Kauffman Foundation develops and generously supports numerous efforts that provide entrepreneurs the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to start and grow businesses. More than 350,000 entrepreneurs have taken a Kauffman course to help start and grow their businesses. More information on Kauffman FastTrac and testimonials from program participants can be found at www.fasttrac.org.

The FastTrac New Venture program not only helps an entrepreneur uncover the answers, it also helps him/her determine the questions to ask. The program helps them save time and money by testing the feasibility of a business concept before launch. The materials developed by the Kauffman Foundation for FastTrac NewVenture help a budding entrepreneur consider all the factors that will impact success and provide step-by-step decision-making processes that minimize the risk of launch.

The course includes an introduction to available resources and sources of information that will aid entrepreneurs in planning and decision-making. Participants work through real world examples in order to develop skills and gain the necessary knowledge. They then apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills to their own business concept, developing a plan.

The program is offered over a 10 week period, with one (1) three (3) hour session per week.

The actual schedule of sessions will be developed with the scholarship recipients to best fit with current work and family obligations of the majority of recipients.

The Growth Alliance is accepting proposals from prospective scholarship recipients now through 5:00 PM Central Time on Friday, March 6, 2015.

IS IT TRUE February 19, 2015

160

IS IT TRUE every day that the identity of the three person midnight boat cleaning crew that is credited with starting the fire on the first boat at Inland Marina are not released is another day for conspiracy theories to flourish?…there are very few good reasons for these names to be kept secret?…what is amazing is that someone hasn’t outed the anonymous cleaning crew through social media?…it was social media that outed poor ole Brian Williams for embellishing a story that never led to the destruction of over $2 Million worth of private property?…it is only fair to conclude that whomever or whatever is helping keep these identities secret has a very serious aversion to transparency about naming these three people?…there is no news of a hunt for fugitives and no call for prosecution?…it seems as though the best course of action would be for these three midnight amigos to just come forward and take credit for their accident and put all of the mystery to rest?…there are very few things that bind a group of three together in silence and none of those things are positive under the present circumstances?…everyone else who set foot on the property has been outed for doing so, except for the midnight cleaning crew who everyone accepts started the fire?

IS IT TRUEthe strange case of the Union County Fiscal Court purchasing stolen equipment for prices that are just a dollar under what they must send out for bids by law is taking a strange turn?…the accused thieves both of whom hail from Vanderburgh County are petitioning the court to dismiss the charges?…the inconvenient truths are that it is well established that the equipment purchased by Union County was stolen and in some cases it is even documented who it was stolen from?…it is also documented by cancelled check who Union County bought the gear from?…if the charges against the accused end up being dismissed, their attorney needs to be inducted into the legal hall of fame?

IS IT TRUE after the win over Drake the University of Evansville Purple Aces men’s basketball team is sitting on 19 wins with three games to go to get that 20th win during the regular season?…with games against highly ranked Wichita State and Northern Iowa the odds are not in the Aces favor even though they have been known to knock off both of these perennial powers?…the most probable 20th win is the last game of the season at the Ford Center against Illinois State?…if the Aces come through with their 20th win, it will be the first time since 1999 that they have achieved a 20 win regular season?…that is also the last NCAA tournament appearance the Aces made when they got hot and won their conference tournament?…

IS IT TRUE the Ford Center has proudly announced that Evansville favorite Kenny Chesney will be coming to town to do a concert at the big new arena on Main Street?…while this is one concert that the CCO predicts will sell out, it is not an artist that would not have played at Roberts Stadium?…the reality is that Kenny Chesney has played to sell out crowds at Roberts Stadium so often that he could have been considered the house band out on Boeke?…it has been nearly four years since Bob Seger opened the Ford Center and there has not been so much as one act that has not played at or would have been glad to play Roberts Stadium in the shape it was in before its premature demise at the hands of it’s owner?…the music fans of Evansville have not heard a whisper of Rush or Metallica coming to town which were two of the acts that were touted in the rigged town hall meetings to bait the people of the River into silent acceptance of the unneeded construction project?

Medical malpractice bill killed in Senate

0

Dave Stafford for www.theindianlawyer.com

A proposal to allow clear medical malpractice claims to go directly to court rather than through medical review panels was defeated Monday in the Indiana Senate.
Senators voted 27-22 against Senate Bill 55, which would have allowed malpractice claims to be filed directly to court in two situations: when the wrong body part has been removed, or when the claim is based on the existence of a foreign object in the patient’s body.

Under current state law, any claim for damages in excess of $15,000 must go before a medical review panel consisting of three medical professionals. Panels render opinions on proposed claims before they may be heard in court. An attorney also is appointed to chair these panels but doesn’t vote.

Previously, senators stripped the bill of a provision that would have raised the $15,000 limit, which has not been increased since 1985. Bill sponsor Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, proposed raising the threshold to $187,500, but the Judiciary Committee he chairs sent the bill to the floor with the limit increased to just $50,000. The increase was stripped out entirely on the Senate floor, where the provisions concerning foreign objects and removal of wrong body parts were added.

SB 55 is one of two medical malpractice bills introduced in the General Assembly this session.

Rep. Jerry Torr, R-Carmel, authored House Bill 1043 that would increase the medical malpractice award cap from the current level of $1.25 million to $1.65 million. The bill also would raise insurers’ liability to $300,000 from the current limit of $250,000.

HB 1043 on Monday passed the House Judiciary Committee on a 9-2 vote.
