Thank goodness it’s Friday and the final day of my two weeks of “vacation”. I can’t wait to get back to work and away from Peg’s unending, ever changing list of things that must be done RIGHT NOW and by Me!

Here’s how the negotiations went four weeks ago. Jim: “Uh, Peg, due to a schedule change at work I have an opportunity to squeeze in a couple of weeks of free time. I was thinking I’d just chill out for a while.”

Peg: “Sounds great. Let’s go see my family in Vermont. We haven’t been there since Mom’s funeral.”

Jim: “Uh, boy that’s a good idea. I think being on the road for half my time off is just what I had in mind. Maybe at least one of those Vermonters will say more than ten words to us.”

Peg: “If you’d not get into your arguments over their conservative politics and just be quiet occasionally, they could get a word in. If we don’t go to Vermont, how about Florida?”

Jim: “Oh, that’s good. Let’s drive a thousand miles towards the equator as temperatures are steadily rising. Besides, the last time we went to Florida everyone spoke either Spanish or Yiddish. I didn’t know if we were in Havana or New York City.”

Then she began to slowly set the trap.

Peg: “Well, we could just stay around here. That way you wouldn’t have to take me anywhere.”

I failed to recognize the on-coming train.

Jim: “ That would be great. I can relax, watch some baseball, read a book or two and not shave.”

Peg: “Those are certainly possibilities.”

I thought we had what judges call a meeting of the minds, you know, an oral contract. What I found out was, as Yogi Berra so wisely postulated, an oral contract is not worth the paper it is written on, especially with one’s spouse.

There probably have been baseball games on TV these past two weeks, well not in Baltimore, but somewhere. I cannot be sure because I have spent my whole vacation engaged in projects, Peg’s projects. It must be biological. The wife of the species can see what no husband can, i.e., manual labor hiding in every corner but never to be found lying on the deck with a cool beverage.

Evans to Celebrate Walk to School Day

8:05 a.m.

Meeting at AIS Diamond, 2319 Stringtown Rd. 

 

Evans School is celebrating National Walk to School Day tomorrow with an organized walk to Evans from neighboring AIS Diamond. Students are asked to meet at the Academy of Innovative Studies, Diamond Avenue Campus’ football field around 8:05 tomorrow morning. Around 8:15, the group will walk together to Evans. The school also will use this time as an opportunity to reflect on this school year with a balloon release.

 

National Walk to School Day serves as a way to encourage healthy habits among students. It also helps students learn how to walk safely among traffic and, since families also are invited to walk with their students, it encourages families to be active together.

Ivy Tech to Recognize Record Number of Graduates at 2015 Commencement Ceremony

Ivy Tech Community College estimates that nearly 21,100 credentials will be awarded at commencement ceremonies throughout the state taking place from May 7 to May 15. This is an increase of 26 percent over the last two years, and an increase of nearly 70 percent over the last five years.  In addition to earning credentials Ivy Tech students have earned thousands of credits to transfer to four-year institutions throughout the state, saving those students more than $34.8 million dollars in tuition costs.

Ivy Tech Community College Southwest will recognize a record number of graduates and award a record number of credentials at its 2015 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 8. Over 957 students will graduate, up 20% from the last academic year, and almost 400 students are expected to participate in the Commencement Ceremony. A record 1,360 degrees, certificates, and technical certificates will be awarded, the largest number in 10 years, up nearly 30% from the last academic year.

In addition, seven graduates from Ivy Tech’s EVSC Early College program will be receiving a credential during the ceremony and then graduating from high school later this month.

Bob Jones, State Trustee and President and CEO of Old National Bank will give the Commencement Address and will also be awarded an honorary degree. Nick Barton, Class of 2006, will be presented with the Ivy Tech Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Monday, May 11, 2015 has been cancelled.  Also, the meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2015 is cancelled, as that is the Memorial Day Holiday.

North Junior High to Wrap up Service Learning Project

For the past couple of months, eighth grade students at North Junior High School have been busy working on a service learning project that has them collecting books for Little Husky World and the Jacob Andrew Schriber Ball Wish Fund. Tomorrow, students will host a ceremony where they will explain the project and display the large amount of books collected.

 

The project, “HUSKIES: Behind the Books,” was for eighth grade students at North Junior High and challenged them to collect as many books as possible to give to the early childhood program and the Jacob Ball Wish Fund. In addition to collecting books, students created resources such as lesson plans, bookmarks, games, CDs with book recordings, videos and much more to help the younger students.

 

Background:

The Jacob Andrew Schriber Ball Wish Fund was established in spring of 2013, when Jacob Ball passed away at the young age of 12. This EVSC Foundation fund was established to grant wishes of EVSC special education teachers to give their students experiences that give them joy while they learn useful life skills.

IS IT TRUE we want to thank Steven W. Lockyear,  Chief Deputy of the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office for sending us updated information concerning the activities  of the Coroner’s Office?

IS IT TRUE Councilman Friend and Weaver both appeared is separate televised interviews’ today and acknowledged the stress of the last several months and were very complimentary of each other?  Both indicated they have had a close friendship over the years that had become strained?  They both also said they were reaching out to each other to resolve any differences and rekindle their long friendship?  John Friend also indicated that his injured finger was healing nicely?

IS IT TRUE we predict that Republican candidate Anna Hargis for City Council will give Anne Melcher all she wants in a heavy Democratic areas? Hargis is a bright, intelligent young professional?  She has demonstrated that she is also a very hard worker and an avid campaigner?  Normally this ward would be an automatic democratic seat, however,  Hargis has shown that she intends to make this a real competitive seat?  With the recent changes to the third ward district lines, we expect this race will turn into a real political dog fight?

IS IT TRUE don’t be surprise to hear that several independent candidates shall be filing for City Council offices in the near future?  After the closeness of some of the primary races,  several prospective candidates have contacted the CCO and seriously recruiting candidates for some of the positions?  Although Wayne Parke made a feeble effort to endorse Democratic candidates, that endorsement is what is spurring some democrats and republicans to look for independent candidates for some of these seats?  Some are also wondering if Parke will continue with his endorsement of Laura Windhorst or switch and endorse J.D. Strouth, the GOP candidate?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing that 6th Ward City Councilman Al Lindsay is already making plans to challenges County Commissioner Steve Melcher in next year’s Democratic primary?  Lindsay feels that he has gained invaluable experience as a City Councilman and can utilize that experience as a fresh voice in County government?

IS IT TRUE that Mayoral Gail Riecken’s new Campaign Treasurer that will replace John Friend has cause considerable discussion among the political types?  Some in the Riecken camp may find the choice very hard to accept If she selects the person with union connections?

IS IT TRUE it would be beneficial if Mrs. Riecken talented campaign Director would take a week off to study the local political landscape? He needs to learn the players, the community, organization and overall politics in Evansville and Southern Indiana?

IS IT TRUE the best political campaign marketing award goes to City Clerk Laura Brown Windhorst?  She had very attractive and professional campaign material?  The least attractive yard signs go to J.D. Strouth that look like homemade signs?
