Islamic Center Executive Director and Imam to Speak at UE

Omar Atia, executive director and imam of the Islamic Center of Evansville, will be speaking at the University of Evansville on Thursday, April 16, 7:00-8:00 p.m., Room 170 (Smythe Lecture Hall), Schroeder School of Business Building. A question and answer session will follow the lecture. Atia’s topic will be “Finding the Truth through the Noise – What Does Islam Really Stand For?” This event is free and open to the public.

Atia has been a community activist and motivational speaker for more than 15 years. Before coming to the Islamic Center of Evansville, he led youth and community development efforts in Indianapolis, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Atia’s blend of faith-based learning and real-world social-justice leadership enables him to provide a distinct take on Islam. His thought leadership stays true to faith tradition while providing a vision that is relevant and transformative for America.

 

Professionally, Atia is an internationally recognized leader in the fields of lean management and applied creativity. As co-founder and chief strategist of Thoughtfire, he has proven success stories with companies around the world, aiding transformations from mediocre performance to consistent, world-class results.

Atia graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and a master’s in interdisciplinary engineering. He has completed courses with the Islamic American University towards a bachelor’s in Islamic studies. He was born in Illinois, lived in Cairo, Egypt, for part of his childhood, and in Indiana most of his life.

IS IT TRUE we would like to commend Redevelopment Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave for staying principaled by voicing her concern about the financing of two major Downtown development projects? …we are offended that fellow board member Schopmeyer got personal with Mrs. Musgrave?  …we also are amazed that the ERC Board hired help (Kelly Courses) felt it necessary to publicly insult board member Musgrave on TV after the meeting ended?  …that it is totally unacceptable for any public employee and department head to openly insult a member of a board and taxpayer?

IS IT TRUE we hear from extremely reliable sources that the Evansville Police Department may we facing another civil lawsuit concerning an alleged over zealous arrest of a minority person who doesn’t speak english?  …the EPD officers be stunned to find out that this event was caught on video?  …we hope that the officers involved in this arrest had their body cams on during this event?

IS IT TRUE we are still waiting for City Controller Russ Lloyd, Jr to make public the official document that gave him the authority to get a $2.5 million dollar advancement from the Evansville Water and Sewer Department Pilot  fund in December 2014?  …we hope that Controller Lloyd will be mindful that City Councilman John Friend, CPA  has in his possession official minutes of the Evansville Water and Sewer Department for the last 3 years?

IS IT TRUE  the City of Evansville operational budget over-spending practices for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2015 was 6.5 million compared to January 31, 2014 of $8.9 million?  …the Civil City fund balance fell by $7.3 million?  …$1.2 million was borrowed funds from the Evansville Economic Development Construction bond issuance?  …adjustments indicate the Civil City fund decline was around  $8.6 million compared to $9.6 million a year earlier?

IS IT TRUE we just heard that an out of town business just purchased the Jungle Restaurant with their own funds? …we were just informed that officials from DMD gave the new owners of this downtown restaurant a $50,000 facade grant so they can to do some exterior renovations?   … we thought the Director of the DMD stated he didn’t have any more Facade Grants money to give this year? …that this is a great example  “government shouldn’t do for business that they can and should do for themselves”?

Library event to feature local published authors

 Eight local published authors will be featured at Central Library’s Local Voices: Conversations with Community Authors event Sunday at 1:30 pm in the Browning Events Room.  Authors will discuss their work, answer audience questions, and sign copies of their books.  Books will be available for purchase at the event.

EDITORIAL: MOSBY TAKES CITY COUNCIL SEAT FOR GRANTED

Evansville City Councilwoman Missy Mosby was invited to appear on Tri-State Voices for the March 25, 2015 taping.  Ms. Mosby legitimately had a conflict for the evening with the Mayor’s Traveling Town Hall, which was located in the Second Ward that night. However, Mosby refused to reschedule the discussion with her opponent Steve Davis and was dishonest in recounting the issue to her voters vie Facebook.  In addition she also failed to disclose her ability to reschedule the taping of the Tri-State Voices show for essentially any time she chose.  We were also insulted to hear there was an attempt made asking that Mosby receive a pass for coming on the show.

Tri-State Voices is a popular weekly 30 minute program on local Cable television, City County Observer You Tube Channel.  This program is hosted by a well known local Democrat (Mark Owen) and Republican (Cheryl Musgrave) who prepare questions for the candidates that are not disclosed prior to the program taping. For this election cycle the City Council At Large candidates, City Clerk candidates and one of the candidates for the First Ward have already appeared. The program thus far has proven to be a fair discussion about important issues facing the community. It is also the only forum for the May 5th Primary where candidates must carry themselves. Unlike written questions that can be answered by anyone, candidates must think on their feet while viewers can surmise their comfort level and body language in answering tough questions.

With city budgets upside down, eating away at reserves, and more and more of gambling revenue being used for downtown projects, other questions worthy of an answer is whether Mosby would support a tax increase or annexation. The voters have a right to answers and to determine Mosby’s ability understand the City’s finances. The assumption is she has no such ability. She has supported the current Mayor’s spending habits and opposed every attempt to bring the City’s finances into order. With a refusal to cut budgets, her constituents should know her plan for infrastructure and park maintenance beyond her statements to the Courier & Press that more money should be spent. Where will this money come from? What other part of the budget should be cut? People want answers, and she should be more than willing to provide them.

It is important to point out that this week Tri-State Voices program is presently on the City County Observer You Tube Channel for the remainder of the week.  Ms. Mosby opponent Steve Davis showed up for the taping of the show and answered many pointed questions concerning his stance on local governmental issues.  We encourage to visit our You Tube site and view for yourself how 2nd Ward City Council candidate Steve Davis conducts himself during this interview.  As far as Ms. Mosby we guess you can follow her political stances on her Facebook.

Prior to revealing our endorsements for the Primary, we would like to again extend an invitation to Councilwoman Mosby to participate in Tri-State Voices TV Show and correct the impression she lacks answers to the City’s financial woes. Finally, we are aware of emails and texts from Tri-State Voices     co-hosts that foreshadow questions and offer new dates. Ms. Mosby can simply respond to an email or text and set up a new time.  We strongly encourage her to face her opponent.  By not doing so she looks like she has taken her re-election to City Council for granted.

Ivy Tech Community College Hosts 26th Semi-Annual Wellness Fair

Ivy Tech Community College Southwest announces today that they will hold their semi-annual Wellness Fair on Wednesday, April 8th, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Ivy Tech’s main campus located at 3501 N. First Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

 

The Wellness Fair will showcase booths from over 45 area vendors including Gilda’s Club, Walgreens, Chick-Fil-A, Evansville Tri-State Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, Deaconess Hospital, St. Mary’s Health System, Active Chiropractic, B Renewed Wellness Center, YMCA, American Cancer Society, Smokefree Communities, Pregnancy Resource Center, Seton Harvest, Vision Care Center, Rise Up and Run Productions, and many more. There will also be free blood pressure screenings, chair massages, and cholesterol screenings.

 

The Fair will also feature a presentation, Beer Pong Madness: A Look at Alcohol’s Role in College Life, presented by Dr. James Macke of Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare as part of Alcohol Awareness Month. The presentation will be held at 12:15 p.m. in Ivy Tech’s Vectren Auditorium.

 

”Our goal is to offer a large variety of health information to our students, employees, and the community,” said Ivy Tech’s Wellness and Fitness Coordinator Amy Lutzel.  “The Wellness Fair offers everyone a convenient opportunity to ask questions and learn more about their health.”

Severe Weather and EVSC Schools

We wanted to let you know that buses in the North High School attendance district in the EVSC are running late, due to the severe weather that passed through our area, and the resulting downed power lines and debris and flooding on roadways.  We have messaged out to our families that they will be arriving home late – but wanted to let all of you know, as well, to help spread the word.

 

Also –all evening activities are continuing as planned, with the EXCEPTION of Scott School’s Kindergarten Orientation.  There is currently no power at Scott School – so orientation tonight, originally planned from 5:30-7 p.m., has been cancelled.  It will be re-scheduled to a later date.

Alcohol a Factor in Single Vehicle Crash

On Monday, April 06, 2015 at 1:14pm the Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Upper Mount Vernon Road and Tree Top Lane upon report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Responding sheriff’s deputies located a yellow 1994 Ford Mustang wrecked against a tree and down an embankment on the side of Upper Mount Vernon Road. The driver indicated that he had been traveling too fast, left the right side of the roadway, over-corrected, crossed the center of the roadway and then exited the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree before coming to rest.

The driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the vehicle airbag was deployed. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is suspected of being a factor in the crash and a blood sample will be sent to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology for analysis.

Gibson County – Just before midnight, Troopers Brock Buchanan and Paul Stolz were patrolling US 41 northbound near C.R. 400 South when they observed a pickup truck parked facing the wrong way. The vehicle was parked facing south between the median and the northbound passing lane. The male driver was passed out behind the wheel. After troopers were able to get the driver to wake up, he appeared to be very confused. Troopers also found a near empty pint of Whiskey on the seat next to the driver’s leg. The driver was identified as Donald W. Seitz, 55, of Boonville.  Seitz was so impaired that troopers were unable to administer field sobriety tests. He was taken to Gibson General Hospital in Princeton where further investigation revealed Seitz had a blood alcohol content of .32%. Seitz was eventually taken to the Gibson County Jail where he is currently being held on bond.
