0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer redshirt junior goalkeeper Anna Markland was named the Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday.

Overall, Markland has been tabbed OVC Goalkeeper of the Week six times in her USI career. Following Tuesday’s announcement, this season marks the second time in her career that the goalkeeper has earned OVC Goalkeeper of the Week three times in a single season. Markland previously won the award three times in the 2023 season, which was also the same season Markland was named the OVC Goalkeeper of the Year.

Markland received this week’s accolade after continuing her solid stretch in goal in Saturday’s OVC-opening match at the University of Tennessee at Martin. The Screaming Eagles’ netminder posted her fourth clean sheet of the season, helping USI secure a point in a 0-0 draw against the Skyhawks and extend the team’s unbeaten streak to five matches. All four shutouts this season have come during the current five-match streak. Markland also snagged a season-high seven saves while facing 23 shot attempts by the Skyhawks.

In nine starts this season, Markland has logged nearly 800 minutes in goal, posting a 1.59 goals against average with 26 saves and four shutouts.

Markland and the Screaming Eagles (3-5-2, 0-0-1 OVC) return to action Thursday at 7 p.m. against Morehead State University for the first of back-to-back home OVC matches at Strassweg Field. Thursday is USI Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. USI will then host Southeast Missouri State University on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.

9th Annual Friday Knights Hunger Bowl

Donations Reach New Heights

Check presentation to SVDP Food Pantry is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30 at 2:00 pm at the SVDP Food Pantry 809 N. Lafayette Ave Evansville IN 47711

The 9th Annual Friday KNIGHTS Hunger Bowl was played on Friday, September 12th at Enlow Field culminating in raising over $37,000 for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. The Friday Knights Hunger Bowl Game featured the Reitz Memorial Tigers and Mater Dei Wildcats football teams. This is the 9th year for the FRIDAY KNIGHTS HUNGER BOWL. Mary Read the SVDP Pantry Director appreciates all the monies from the supporters of Memorial and Mater Dei. Reitz Memorial won the game 28 to 21. Fundraising amounts have grown from $3,151.36 the first year in 2017. For a nine-year total of over $170,000.

The student of Reitz Memorial and Mater Dei Catholic High Schools, students of area Catholic Grade Schools, area Knights of Columbus Councils and the attendees of the game itself were involved in the fund raising. Special thanks to the cheerleaders of both teams for assisting with the halftime collections. Each year we have worked to involve more people, more councils, more schools and more parishes to grow the amount of support we can offer the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank. Online giving and outside donations has grown.

The Friday Knights Hunger Bowl began nine years ago after John Sandwell, Knight of the Auxillio Knights of Columbus Council 16454 read about a similar activity Florida. The first year resulted in just over $3,000 collected. After the check presentation to then SVDP Food Pantry manager, Sister Donna Marie Herr, OSB, Brother Knight Mark Hackert (St. Benedict Cathedral Council 7544) met for celebratory pizza at Deerhead Pizza across the street. The conversation quickly turned to how to increase donations in the future. The enthusiasm and ideas discussed were instrumental in driving the FRIDAY KNIGHTS HUNGER BOWL forward to unforeseen heights.

THUNDERBOLTS RE-SIGN FORWARD MYLES ABBATE

0

Evansville, In.:  The Evansville Thunderbolts and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jeff Bes are pleased to announce the re-signing of forward Myles Abbate for the 2025-26 season.  The Thunderbolts will raise their President’s Cup Championship banner prior to their 2025-26 home opener at Ford Center on Saturday, October 25th against the Quad City Storm.
Abbate, now entering his third professional season, joined the Thunderbolts early in the 2023-24 season following a two-game stint with the Peoria Rivermen and has become an important piece of the Thunderbolts’ forward group, amassing 25 goals and 59 points in 92 regular season games, including 10 goals and 27 points in 48 games in 2024-25.  In the 2025 Playoffs, Abbate scored two goals and added an assist to aid the Thunderbolts in their run to the President’s Cup Championship.  The native of Norwell, Massachusetts has also become an important piece of the Thunderbolts’ leadership corps, recognized with his appointment to an alternate captaincy position late in 2024-25.  Prior to 2023-24,  Abbate played four seasons of college hockey at Plymouth State University, many of his games played alongside recent Thunderbolts signings Connor Tait and Colin Tracy.  Abbate scored 54 goals and 115 points in 86 games of regular season college play between 2019-2023, winning three MASCAC Conference Championships, was twice the MASCAC Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year in 2019-20, twice a First-Team All-Conference member, and in 2022-23 was also a First-Team ACHA All-American member.
“Going into my second professional season (in 2024-25), I felt comfortable with the group that we had and how we played.  Going into the playoffs, we knew we had no pressure on us as a lower seed and that we just needed to stick to our game plan,” commented Abbate when asked to reflect on this past season.  He continued by saying: “We had a close team, and I think that is a huge reason why we overcame the adversity, we were up to the challenge to prove everyone wrong.  Winning the President’s Cup was an unbelievable feeling, just to see the grind of a long season pay off and celebrating with your best friends was something I’ll never forget.”  Looking ahead to his third season with Evansville, Abbate commented: “The main goal is definitely to repeat as President’s Cup Champions.  I feel like we have established a strong culture here, we have some great players returning and some new players who will contribute to our success.  I personally want to contribute more offensively, and to contribute more to our penalty kill.  The penalty kill was great for us in the playoffs and to continue that into this season would be huge.”  Abbate also welcomed his Plymouth State teammates Connor Tait and Colin Tracy, saying: “I was ecstatic seeing them sign with us, playing with them in college was great and I feel that they can contribute to our team in multiple areas.  We made some good memories in college, and I am looking forward to creating more good memories with them as Thunderbolts!”  In closing, Abbate finished by saying: “I can’t wait to get back to Evansville and play in front of our great fans at Ford Center again!”
On re-signing Abbate, Head Coach Jeff Bes commented: “Returning for his third season, Myles was an important player for me to get signed.  He is an absolute nail gun and comes ready to work every day with a smile on his face.  He is without question one of our best penalty killers, which showed in the playoffs.  Myles was a bit snakebitten last season around the net, but he didn’t let that affect the way he played the game, and I know this season he will definitely contribute more in the scoring department.  Myles has become a leader on our team, which has given him more confidence and will only help his game soar to new levels this season.”

Escudero Notches Brace, Aces Win Thriller Over Butler

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With his team facing a 1-0 deficit with less than 15 minutes to play, Evansville freshman Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro) notched his second brace in three matches to power Evansville to a come from behind 2-1 win over Butler on Tuesday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

After Butler opened the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute, Escudero scored the equalizer in the 80th minute before delivering the winner in the 86th minute. With the brace, Escudero becomes the first Evansville freshman with multiple braces in a season since MVC Freshman of the Year Nacho Diaz Barragan in 2022.

The first half saw scoring chances for both sides, but neither side was able to convert for a goal. Escudero and Chase Ricker (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) put shots on goal for the Aces in the 26th and 28th minutes, while Ben Zec (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) tallied shots on goal in the 34th and 36th minutes.

Action ratcheted up late in the second half, starting with a near goal by Evansville’s Devin Shepherd (Denver, Colo./Arapahoe) in the 70th minute. However, his shot went off the crossbar and the Aces were denied.

In the 76th minute, Butler broke through for the night’s first goal on a header from Sam Pitts-Eckersall.

With their backs against the wall, Evansville responded in the 80th minute. Shepherd started the chance with a long ball down to Ricker who found Zec on the right side. From there, Zec lofted a pass to Escudero near the penalty spot, where he took a touch off the left foot before beating the Butler keeper for the goal.

Less than six minutes later, the Aces struck again. Nacho Garcia (Zaragoza, Spain/UNIR) starting things this time, finding Pablo Calvete (Ponferrada, Spain/UNIR) at midfield. Calvete then delivered a beautiful through ball to a streaking Escudero, who took two touches to the top of the box before ripping a strike into the top left corner for the game-winning goal.

With Butler scrambling for the equalizer in the final minutes, Mroz made a game-saving stop for the second match in a row, leaping to the top left corner to get a hand on would-be goal to preserve the lead. From there, Evansville withstood two more Bulldogs’ shots to come out with their second win of the season.

“It was a battle,” said Head Coach Robbe Tarver. “Conceding late in the second half and then having the resiliency to bounce back and score two goals, I thought we created enough to go ahead. Happy that we battled, I think we need to keep that spirit moving forward because that’s what it takes to win in the MVC.”

“Andres is a relentless runner. He is always looking to get in behind; I think he changes the dynamic of our team with his willingness to run. Obviously, we are excited that he scored another brace and that we got the win tonight.”

Butler held a 12-11 advantage in shots, but Evansville led in shots on goal with six to the Bulldogs’ three. Mroz made three saves in goal for the Aces.

With the win, Evansville moves to 2-2-5 on the season. The Aces will be back in action on Friday to open MVC play, traveling to Bowling Green for a rematch of last season’s MVC title match. Kick-off is set for 6 PM CT.

Indiana Needs Solutions, Not Distractions

2

By: Rep. Alex Burton (D-Evansville)

As culture wars continue to dominate politics, sound policy is taking a back seat. We’ve spent more time ushering in divisive rhetoric and stoking fears than positioning society to produce students ready to learn, responsible graduates prepared to enter the workforce, safeguarding citizens from rising costs and inflation, and ensuring the next generation of Hoosiers has a better state to call home.

At this moment, we must address rising energy costs, health care, housing, infrastructure and child care. Without focusing on these integral issues, we’re too easily distracted by trending topics on social media and the constant deluge of global stories that prevent us from focusing on our responsibility to ensure we have strong institutions that are funded and resourced to serve our communities. Building these community pillars allow the state to continue tackling the issues that affect Hoosiers’ lives. Our divisiveness will only lead us down a more dangerous path.

While many are distracted by the idea of a special session and the looming threat of redistricting, my focus remains on understanding the issues facing Indiana and solving them reasonably. I share the concern about how these temporary measures could impact our state, but I refuse to let them become my sole focus. There must be an emphasis on why these short-term moves are unnecessary and costly for Indiana – let alone for Southwest Indiana, where families and communities already shoulder more than their fair share of challenges. Without a clear goal to position our state as a growing place full of opportunity that is driven by our cost of living, health care systems, infrastructure, education and overall quality of life, we fail in our duties as elected officials to look out for the best interest of Indiana.

Working for the people, by the people is a privilege and an honor. In these tumultuous times, I encourage reflection and compassion when vitriol and hate are often spewed without a second thought. A divided democracy does not lift any one person up. Rather, it perpetuates the cycle of violence, poverty and disproportionate discrimination. Indiana’s foundation is centered on the belief that tomorrow can be a better day and that change is around the corner, but only if we do so together.

CenterPoint offers customers tips and programs to fall into energy and cost savings

Customers can do the following for energy and cost savings:

·       Verify the furnace or boiler is working: Prior to using a furnace or boiler for the first time this season, use a qualified technician to perform a tune-up and system inspection.

·       Change or clean the filters in HVAC systems: Maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature can represent approximately 50 percent of a home’s energy use. Regular maintenance is one of the best ways to extend the life of a home’s system, so swap out or clean filters to minimize costly repairs and keep the system running efficiently. Conduct a home energy assessment: Available to all households, this no-cost assessment includes on-the-spot upgrades such as weatherstripping, aerators, pipe insulation and a smart thermostat. Customers also receive a personalized home energy report with tailored recommendations. Income-qualified customers can access no-cost home assessments and on-the-spot upgrades through the Neighborhood Weatherization Program. ·       Save hot water while maintaining comfort: Showering accounts for 40 percent of a home’s hot water use. Energy-saving showerheads and faucet aerators can help lower energy costs and reduce hot water use without sacrificing comfort.

·       Upgrade to more energy efficient appliances and equipment: When replacing appliances and equipment, look for ENERGY STAR®-certified products for increased energy efficiency and cost savings over time. Energy efficiency rebates may be available for new, qualifying appliances.

Governor Calls for Strong Applicants for Open IURC Roles

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Governor Mike Braun affirmed his commitment to protecting Hoosiers by calling for an entrepreneurial approach to address utility rates. He named three individuals to the nominating committee of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), the administrative agency that makes decisions in the public interest to ensure utilities provide safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates.

“It is important that the IURC nominating committee look at applicants through a lens that considers one’s ability to protect ratepayers while objectively weighing the facts and proposals that will impact Hoosiers for years to come.”Governor Mike Braun

The appointees to the nominating committee are Secretary of Energy and Natural Resources Suzie Jaworowski, former Indiana State Representative Dollyne Sherman, and Cory Cochran, a business executive from Floyd County. They will join four members previously nominated by the General Assembly.

With the nominating committee in place, Governor Braun announced that applications are now open for three IURC commissioner vacancies. The nominating committee will review applicants and forward recommended finalists to Governor Braun.

Governor Braun encourages entrepreneurial candidates who will objectively consider proposed energy-related filings and their impact upon Hoosier ratepayers to apply to serve on this commission. The roles are full-time positions.

“Ensuring that Indiana has efficient utilities without overburdening Hoosier families is critically important to me. If you are an entrepreneurial thinker and creative problem solver, I encourage you to apply to join the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.”Governor Mike Braun
