IS IT TRUE we wonder why benches with advertising are located on city bus stop locations and are now being placed throughout city on major high traffic area without city bus service? …we wonder if these bus stop benches are subsidized by City, State or Federal funding? …if so, are RFP sent out to allow competitive bidding on the City Bus stop benches contract?

IS IT TRUE we hear that the Mayor’s political spin doctors are telling the Fireman and City bus drivers that Mayoral candidate Gail Riecken isn’t for giving them a pay raise this year?  ..Mrs. Riecken has nothing to with giving City employees pay raises because this is a function of  the present City Council and the Mayor? …we predict this kind of silly politics will back fire on the Mayor?

IS IT TRUE a couple of the Mayor’s male supporters were overheard saying that Mayoral Candidate Gail Riecken should stay home an bake cookies and let the men run the city? …we heard that a few females the told men at this social event that for 200 hundred years the City of Evansville has had male Mayors and it’s time for the men to bake some cookies? …one of the more outspoken women said she’s for giving Gail a broom and let her sweep City Hall clean?

IS IT TRUE we hear that the City of Evansville Firefighter’s Union shall be making an official announcement whom they are supporting as the next Mayor of Evansville today at 3:30 pm? …all eyes are on todays Firefighters political endorsement announcement? …we say let the drama begin?

IS IT TRUE the Evansville Firefighters L357 PAC  recently voted to endorse  City Council President Dr. Dan Adams for re-election in the the upcoming City election?  …we can’t wait to find out what other City Council candidates that are going to endorse?

Without naming names or making this personal – those who would exploit death by charging exorbitant fees for funeral services or blocking free publication of information about the deceased – his family – accomplishments and tribulations – are among the lowest among us.
This reader is hard-pressed to imagine a time frame or circumstance within which compassion and fairness – are more indicated.
Let those who would resist this opportunity to participate in true sympathy and service to the public – be judged and rewarded accordingly.

What is revealed here in this article, is Loads of Pious phoneys who worship at the alter of the Almighty Dollar, while greeting the face of the bereaved with shallow smiles of “understanding”.
I hope that families from here forward, consider putting their loved one’s Obituary, in the CCO , or anywhere else for that matter,– at their own Discretion,– and as a statement of Principal.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:  IT’S BAIT AND SWITCH BY PASTOR STEVE ARY

Someone from the audience at City Council last night shouted what was probably the best summary of the evening and on everyone’s minds concerning the downtown hotel when they shouted, “It’s Bait and Switch!!” Unfortunately, the microphones did not seem to pick up when they shouted this, but it is exactly what has taken place.

Councilman Dan McGinn stated that we should just move forward with the current plan because if we continue to deliberate on the unapproved changes made to the hotel plans the property still sits without collecting finances for our city.

I say, if this “Bait and Switch” method is the deception our city accepts, then those who get away with it will continue to do so in every area they can as has already been the case. And since this has been the case so long, it doesn’t matter if the property is collecting money for the city because at the rate we’ve been going the city will never see the money anyway if those in power continue to squander the money and skim off the top with the same shell game of find the missing money.

Again, the rich keep getting richer.

Meanwhile, the city admits they have no additional plan for the 20,000 Evansvillians who will be jobless and foodless starting in October of this year. They hope congress doesn’t cut their funding, but current funding for the homeless and impoverished is not nearly enough. Many homeless cannot even get into a shelter because they are already so full that there’s not even a bed on which to sleep.

If the money in this city was being used properly we wouldn’t be arguing over “Hotel Bait ‘N’ Switch,” and trying to find where missing money went, or why someone made $55,000 off an vacant building and parking lot, but rather it would be finding new solutions for the growing population of the impoverished and homeless in this city.

That’s my take.

ST. MARY’S, UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE TO OFFER FINANCIAL PREPAREDNESS CLASS FOR NEW AND EXPECTANT PARENTS

Welcoming a new baby brings a lot of joy to families – but it can also bring many questions about finances. Preparing for the expenses of the first few months of life, costs for daycare, saving for college, and the overall costs of raising a child can leave parents feeling stressed.

That’s why St. Mary’s Hospital for Women & Children and the University of Evansville are teaming up to offer a financial preparedness class for new and expectant parents – whether they are having their first child or welcoming another baby to the family. The class is set for Wednesday, August 5,   from 6:30 – 8:00 PM in the St. Mary’s Gift Conference Room, located just off the lobby of the Hospital for Women and Children.

Dr. Yasser Alhenawi, Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Evansville, will address topics including:

  • Household financial planning
  • Taxes and insurance
  • Resources available for those needing assistance

Ivy Tech Corporate College Announces New Truck Driver Training Program

Ivy Tech Corporate College announced today that it will offer Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) truck driver training through a partnership with Lake Cumberland CDL Training School. Classes will be held at Ivy Tech’s main campus in Evansville, located at 3501 N. First Ave.

 

“An important part of our mission is to meet the needs of local employers and to offer training programs that will result in a successful career pathway for our students,” said Ivy Tech Chancellor, Jonathan Weinzapfel. “Based on the extensive positive feedback we have received from employers, we feel that this training is an excellent fit for our students and our community.”

 

The program is designed for individuals interested in a career as a professional truck driver or those already employed in the trucking industry looking to refresh their skills. Students will receive extensive truck driving instruction and maximum driving time. The tuition cost for the program includes CDL permit, Class A license testing, DOT physical, training materials, and more. In addition, WorkOne and many employers may offer scholarships and tuition assistance.

 

Information sessions will be held for potential students at 11 a.m. on July 15th, and 10 a.m. on July 27th and August 4th. All information sessions will be held at Ivy Tech Corporate College located at 651 Fairway Drive in Evansville.

Bungled recording does not violate constitutional rights

An Anderson man’s argument that his due process rights were violated by law enforcement’s failure to record the audio from two interviews with his daughters did not convince the Indiana Court of Appeals.

Robert Seal’s conviction for child molesting, incest and sexual misconduct were affirmed by a unanimous appellate panel in Robert Seal v. State of Indiana, 48A02-1410-CR-775.

Police first attempted to record the interviews with the two girls in the squad car and again, later, at the police station. However, both times for unknown reasons the recordings did not capture the sound.

On appeal, Seal challenged his conviction, partly on the grounds that the state’s failure to preserve the audio recordings of his victims’ interviews violated his constitutional rights. Specifically, he argued his rights were violated under the Sixth and 14 Amendments of the U.S. Constitution and Article 1, Sections 12 and 13 of the Indiana Constitution.

The Court of Appeals pointed out there is no constitutional or statutory requirement that the police record interviews with victims. Also, the panel noted, there is no evidence the state intentionally sabotaged or destroyed the audio recordings.

Seal countered it does not matter whether the state acted in good faith because the interviews contained materially exculpatory evidence. He contended his counsel could have shown the girls were fabricating their stories.

“To the extent that Seal asserts that his rights to effectively cross-examine the witnesses and to present a defense were violated, we note again that the interviews were summarized, both girls testified, and Seal fails to explain how the summaries were inadequate to assist him in cross-examining the girls,” Judge Terry Crone wrote for the court. “Although he sets forth numerous facts that he argues were relevant to the girls’ motives to fabricate, he was not limited in his scope of cross-examining the girls with regard to those facts. In short, we find no federal or state constitutional violations in this regard.”

Governor Pence Thanks National FFA Organization for Relocating National Convention & Expo to Indianapolis

Indianapolis – At a press conference this morning, Governor Mike Pence thanked the National FFA Organization for bringing their National Convention & Expo back home again to Indianapolis through the year 2024, a move expected to generate more than $300 million in economic impact.

 

“Indiana is ready and committed to support this event and welcome with open arms the 64,000 FFA delegates who will come to Indianapolis each of the next several years,” said Governor Pence. “Combined with the convenient access of being at the Crossroads of America and Indiana’s famous Hoosier hospitality, our state and its capital city are well-suited to host this incredible group of future leaders in the global agriculture industry.”

 

The Governor was joined by Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, National FFA Organization Chair Dr. Steve Brown, and Michael Browning, Chairman of the Board for Visit Indy, as well as student members of the National FFA Organization.

Adams Will Propose 2% Pay Raises For City of Evansville Employees in 2016

Evansville City Council President, Dr. H. Dan Adams, today announced that he will propose a 2% pay hike for Evansville municipal workers for the coming year.  Dr. Adams is releasing his position in advance of city budget hearings.

“I anticipate in next month’s difficult budget process that the Mayor may decide that city workers will see no raises in 2016”, stated Dr. Adams.  Recognizing the daunting fiscal position of the city, Dr. Adams still stressed that Evansville employees are the City’s greatest asset.   “Whether it be a church, hospital or our City, the real treasure of any organization is its employees.  Thus, their financial wellbeing should be protected first”, Dr. Adams remarked, “They should not be punished from this Administration’s spending and inept revenue forecasting.”

“I am confident that diligent budget review can result in identifying sources and adjustments that will yield the approximate $1.5 million needed to make this much needed raise happen,” Dr. Adams said.

 

He went on to set the tone for the upcoming budget review by asking his fellow council members to be prepared for the tough task of studying funding requests against the backdrop of dwindling fund balances.

 

“It is imperative that we move the city’s finances further down the path to solvency.  We must take a critical look at every departmental proposal, not just to identify and probe increases, but to determine realistic funding needs.  I plan to ask tough questions so we have a true picture of how much it really costs to run each city department.  I know my fellow council members will be up to the task,” Dr. Adams said.

 

Adams who is seeking a third term as an At-Large member of city council added that he will also propose council members forgo pay hikes next year.

Evansville man arrested on Robbery, Criminal Recklessness, and other charges after Tuesday night incident

What began as a car stop for reckless driving ended up with 26 year old MICHAEL CHARLES facing a long list of charges, including Robbery, Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, and Resisting Law Enforcement.
At 10:35 Tuesday night, an EPD officer saw a vehicle driving recklessly near Broadway and Barker. The officer tried to stop the car, but the driver, MICHAEL CHARLES, refused to pull over. CHARLES fled north on Barker and tried to turn right onto Pennsylvania. CHARKES lost control and crashed into a guardrail. He got out of the car and ran across the Lloyd Expressway. While crossing the Expressway, CHARLES fell. He was able to get up and continue running, but he left his wallet and ID on the roadway.
While officers responded to the area of the crash, Central Dispatch received a call from 1410 Delmar about a robbery that had just happened. The suspect had fired shots during the robbery and fled in a car that matched the description of the car involved in the chase. Officers saw a .22 rifle in the front seat of the crashed car.
Officers found CHARLES hiding in a field just north of the Lloyd Expressway. He was arrested without further incident.
During the investigation into the robbery on Delmar, police learned that CHARLES and the victim had been a relationship. They were arguing about the care of a child when CHARLES fired a rifle into the air. CHARLES then took the victims car without permission.

Auto Theft
Criminal Recklessness
Resisting Law Enforcement
Hit and Run

Evansville man arrested on weapons charges during traffic stop

Evansville Police arrested 21 year old CAMERON DUNBAR on weapons violation charges during a traffic stop on Tuesday evening.
DUNBAR was stopped for having an expired temporary license plate on the car he was driving.
During the stop, officers found a .38 caliber revolver. DUNBAR told officers the gun was his. DUNBAR did not have a permit to possess the gun. Officers also found the serial number had been scratched off to the point of being unreadable.
DUNBAR was arrested for Possession of an Altered Handgun, Possession of a Handgun without a Permit, and traffic violations.
