IS IT TRUE AUGUST 28, 2015
IS IT TRUE don’t be surprised to hear the City Attorney has decided to file an appeal with the United States Supreme Court in the CHIEF BILLY BOLIN  and EDNA MIlAN case?  …in our opinion the Supreme Court won’t hear this case?  …this move would allow time for this case from being heard  by the lower court until well after the November election?
IS IT TRUE we were entertained by a recent e-mail sent by Councilman John Friend CPA to a fellow Council member? …Mr. Friend wrote: “We need to know Mayor’s Chief of Staff Steve Schaefer’s educational and professional credentials since he indicates his opinion of  cutting the 2016 City budget around $10 million dollars is ridiculous?  … MR. Friend said  “just for the recorded, I reviewed my CPA certificate  on March 31, 1979,  I was approved to do Public Accounting work”?  …”I wonder if Mr. Schaefer has a CPA Certificate that gives him the authority to pass judgement on accurate opinions about the proposed 2016 City budget”?
IS IT TRUE  Mr. Friend makes a valid  statement concerning the Mayor’s Chief Of Staff Steve Schaefer professional and educational background and experiences?  …we wonder if Mr. Schaefer every owned a business and was responsible for making payroll?  …was Mr. Schaefer  ever responsible for keeping a business competitive,  paying Federal, State and Local taxes while making an honorable profit?
IS IT TRUE we are puzzled why City Council persons Missy Mosby made comments about what City Council City Attorney Scott Danks  was paid this year?  …if she thinks Mr. Danks legal services aren’t worthlly of being retained  by City Council for another year then why has she retained him to represent her when she has legal problems in the past?  …Mr. Danks also represented At-large City Councilman Jonathan Weaver in his recent divorce action filed in Warrick County?
IS IT TRUEÂ we just can’t get over At-large City Councilman Jonathan Weaver comments that he sees no problem with the proposed 2016 City Budget? …Mr. Weaver declares that the proposed 2016 City Budget is just fine and dandy the way the Mayor has submitted it to City Council? Â …we wonder if he was talking about the 2015 City budget instead of the proposed 2016 budget?
UE Ranked in Washington Monthly’s Master’s Universities and Best Bang for Buck
The University of Evansville has been ranked 41st out of 673 universities in the Master’s Universities category of the 2015 Washington Monthly College Rankings for impact on the lives of its students and the public good. UE is one of only two Indiana universities ranked in the Master’s category.
UE was also ranked in Washington Monthly’s Best Bang for the Buck in the Master’s category, placing 164th out of 403 schools. The Best Bang for the Buck rankings list schools that are the best value for the money based on “net” (not sticker) price, the graduation rates of their students, and if those students go on to earn at least enough to pay off their loans.
Factors considered in the rankings include upward mobility, research and service.
UE President Thomas A. Kazee points out that the ranking criteria used by Washington Monthly, particularly that of service to the community, reflect very well the fundamental mission of the University.
“Part of UE’s commitment,†he explains, “is to give each of its students a transformational and significant educational experience. Teaching the importance of service and social responsibility is an integral part of that.â€
Washington Monthly is a bimonthly magazine based in Washington, D.C., that covers politics, government, culture, and the media. The complete 2016 College Rankings and methodology are available online.
First Lady Kicks Off Art Exchange Between Indiana and Japan Students
Today First Lady Karen Pence kicked off an art exchange between Southside Elementary School in Columbus and Miyoshigaoka Elementary School located in Miyoshi City, Japan, Columbus’ sister-city.
“It is an honor and privilege to continue building cultural ties between Indiana and Japan,” said First Lady Karen Pence. “What is significant and unique about this exchange is that it connects a cultural bridge between children of both Japan and Indiana. Not only is Columbus, Indiana the sister city to Miyoshi City, Japan, but Southside Elementary School is the sister school to Miyoshigaoka Elementary School.â€
In anticipation of the Governor and First Lady’s departure next month on their second trade mission to Japan, Indiana First Lady Karen Pence, a past art teacher, visited Southside Elementary School in Columbus to teach its fourth grade students to draw “name creatures.†While in Japan, Mrs. Pence will share the Columbus students’ artwork with fourth grade students at Miyoshigaoka Elementary School and ask Miyoshigaoka students to also create “name creature†art. Mrs. Pence will bring the artwork back to the Columbus students to complete the exchange.
“Art is the universal language that carries no age barriers. This project is especially fun because the American and Japanese school children will use their imagination to create whimsical figures from their written name,†said Pence. “After creating ‘name creatures’ from their very differently written names, they will exchange their new pieces of art made from their very own names with each other across the globe. I am looking forward to the opportunity to share and exchange their creative artwork.â€
With 13 sister-city relationships throughout the state of Indiana, today’s exchange is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen sister-city relationships between Indiana and Japan. In 2013, Mrs. Pence conducted a similar art exchange between third grade students at Glen Acres Elementary School in Lafayette and Ota Elementary School, located in its Japanese sister-city of Ota.
