0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team settled for a 10th-place finish out of 32 teams at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships Saturday.

Senior Johnnie Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) and junior Noah Lutz (Evansville, Indiana) finished 23rd and 45th, respectively, to lead the Screaming Eagles, who were tied for sixth in the nation heading into the race.

Guy completed the 10-kilometer course in 30 minutes, 14.20 seconds to earn All-America honors for the 12th time in his storied career at USI. His 12 All-America honors are the most of any student-athlete in USI history.

Lutz completed the race in 30:37.8, less than eight seconds away from 40th-place and an All-America honor.

As a team, the Eagles finished with 348 points, 24 points behind ninth-place Cal Poly Pamona.

Junior Josh Guy (Palmyra, Indiana) finished 98th to aid USI, which lost one of its top runners midway through the race when junior Chase Broughton (Marengo, Indiana) took a fall after getting tangled up with a cone.

Sophomores Jesse Stanley (Chandler, Indiana) and Cain Parker (Petersburg, Indiana) finished 115th and 144th, respectively, to round out the Eagles’ top five, while senior Tyler Schickel (Poseyville, Indiana) rounded out USI’s lineup with a 187th-place finish.

Colorado Mines won the team title with 100 points, while Adams State University and the University of Alaska-Anchorage were second and third, respectively. Shorter University’s Alfred Chelanga won the individual title with a time of 29:24.60.

USI opens the Indoor Track & Field season in January.

USI women’s hoops fall at No. 15 Ashland

Despite shooting 53.8 percent from the field, the University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team could not recover from a rough first five minutes as No. 15 Ashland University defeated the Screaming Eagles, 92-64, in a Midwest Region showdown and rematch of last year’s NCAA Division II Tournament opener.

USI (2-1) fell behind 17-2 in the first five minutes and never recovered as Ashland led 24-13 after the end of the first quarter and 47-34 at the break.

The Screaming Eagles cut Ashland’s advantage to nine multiple times in the second quarter, but that was as close as USI could get.

Ashland (3-0), which shot 58.1 percent from the field, opened the second half with an 8-2 run to build a 55-36 advantage, forcing USI Head Coach Rick Stein to call a timeout. The Eagles stretched that lead to 20 midway through the third quarter before taking a 72-48 lead into the final period.

USI’s deficit eventually stretched to as much as 31 points in the late stages of the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Kendyl Dearing (Huntingburg, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles with 14 points, while junior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois) had 12 points. Junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) and sophomore guard/forwardKaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) each had 10 points, while sophomore guard Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois) had a game-high eight assists to go along with three steals.

USI struggled to take care of the ball throughout the contest as Ashland forced USI into 24 turnovers. Ashland also took 10 more shots than that of USI, which was 12-of-23 from the field in the second half and 28-of-52 for the game.

Sophomore forwards Andi Daugherty and Laina Snyder led Ashland with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Daugherty added five assists and seven rebounds, while Snyder had seven steals.

The Screaming Eagles return to action Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. when they host Alice Lloyd College at the Physical Activities Center.

New goalie stops 41 shots in big home win over Kalamazoo.

28-year-old goaltender Cody Reichard made 41 saves in his Evansville IceMen debut Saturday, as the IceMen defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 3-2 in front of 4,923 fans at the Ford Center in Evansville. The IceMen wore specialty jerseys promoting prostate cancer awareness and auctioned off those jerseys after the game, with proceeds donated to the Deaconess Foundation.

Kalamazoo goaltender Joel Martin kept the game scoreless in the early going with a huge point-blank save on IceMen forward Alex Wideman. Martin then stopped Evansville’s leading scorer, Tyson Fawcett, on a penalty shot.

After the Wings killed off an IceMen power-play, Kalamazoo capitalized on its first man advantage. After a Steve McCarthy shot from the point was deflected on goal, Tyler Shattock buried a loose rebound from the ensuing goal-mouth scramble. Martin stopped all 14 Evansville shots in the period and Reichard made 13 saves in the frame.

Evansville tied the game early in the second period when Ryan Penny finished a tic-tac-toe passing play on a 3-on-1 rush. Then Justin MacDonald scored his second goal in as many nights to give Evansville a 2-1 lead at 6:01 and the IceMen carried that lead into the third.

Daultan Leveille scored a power-play goal 3:26 into the final period, which turned out to be huge for Evansville, as Alex Mallet popped in a goal for the Wings with just under six minutes to play. The IceMen hung on to the 3-2 lead through a flurry of Wings chances at the end to preserve the much-needed win.

The IceMen travel to Anchorage this week for three games against the Alaska Aces. The team arrives in Alaska Wednesday and has Thanksgiving Day off, before games Friday-Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

Sobriety Checkpoint Planned for this Weekend

The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership will conduct a sobriety checkpoint this Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 11:30 pm until 3:00 am. Law enforcement officers from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, the Evansville Police Department and the Indiana State Police will join together to conduct this checkpoint.

The location for Saturday’s checkpoint was chosen based on local traffic collision data. Analysis of data captured in November of 2014 indicated that several geographical areas within Vanderburgh County accounted for a disproportionately high number of reported hit and run crashes. The upcoming checkpoint will be located within one of those areas. Hit and run crashes are often the result of impaired drivers who try to avoid arrest by fleeing the scene.

The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership conducts sobriety checkpoints in an effort to detect and deter impaired drivers (thereby reducing the occurrence of alcohol and drug related traffic crashes).

Funding for local sobriety checkpoint operations is provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA).
