Kim Deprez recognized by MVC

0

Twelve Missouri Valley Conference volleyball student-athletes have been named to the 2015 MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team by a vote of the league’s volleyball sports information directors, with approval from head coaches. An additional 11 student-athletes have earned honorable mention, the league office announced today.

This year’s first team includes six players that have received previous MVC volleyball scholar-athlete recognition, including three repeat first team honorees, including Illinois State’s Ashley Rosch, Southern Illinois’ Taylor Pippen and Wichita State’s Katie Reilly. Two members of the first team boast a perfect 4.00 GPA, in Illinois State’s Jaelyn Keene and Jacqueline Twing.

Kim Deprez was named an Honorable Mention for the team.  Standing with a 3.60 GPA, Deprez is a Communications major at the University of Evansville.  As a senior, Deprez had her best year on the court.  She led the Valley with 5.03 digs per set and also had one of the bests seasons in program history with a total of 598 digs on the season.

Forty-six student-athletes were nominated for the Valley’s scholar-athlete team. The criterion for the honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75-percent of the regular-season matches. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore status in both athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible).

Aces ready for Wooden Legacy

0

One of the most competitive in-season tournaments that the Purple Aces have ever taken part in is coming up as the University of Evansville travels to the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, Calif.

Evansville opens the tournament on Thursday evening against Providence while other teams in the event include: Boise State, Boston College, UC Irvine, Santa Clara, Arizona and Michigan State. Thursday’s game will begin at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised live on ESPNU and you can also watch live on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app.

A 93-88 win over Belmont gave the Purple Aces another 3-0 start to the season. In the win over the Bruins, the Aces led for most of the game, going up by as many as 13 points before Belmont rallied back. D.J. Balentine led the way with 27 points while Egidijus Mockevicius made it 3-for-3 with his third double-double of the season, registering 26 points and 14 boards.

Egidijus Mockevicius recorded his 30th double-double in his last 47 games as he went off for 26 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Belmont. Mockevicius is the ONLY player in the country to 20 points and 12 rebounds. His 26 points coupled with 20 against Marian marked the first time in his career that he has recorded back-to-back 20-point outings.

A 12-of-21 effort from the floor against Belmont saw D.J. Balentine improve his shooting from 33.3% entering the game to 43.8% afterwards. D.J.’s 12 makes tied his career-high, which he did against IPFW in the CIT opener in March. His efforts saw him finish with 27 points to move into a tie for second place in the MVC with 21.3 points per game, he is tied with Mockevicius.

For the first time in his career, Jaylon Brown has recorded back-to-back double figure games, recording 13 against Marian and Belmont. His hot shooting has been evident in the last two games as he was 5-of-7 in both contests. He has given UE solid minutes and is averaging 31.3 per game.

Providence heads to Anaheim with a perfect 4-0 record in tact. The Friars opened up the season with a solid 76-64 win over Harvard before edging out Illinois, 60-59, in the Gavitt Tipoff; Providence has also defeated Brown and NJIT. Preseason All-American Kris Dunn leads the way for the Friars as he has notched 18.8 points per game while posting 21 steals and 7.8 rebounds per game. Teammate Rodney Bullock is right there with him on the scorebaord, tying Dunn with 18.8 PPG; Bullock has shot 54.7% on the season and leads the squad with 8.5 rebounds per game. The 1-2-3 punch continues with Ben Bentil, who has notched 13 points and 8 rebounds per contest through the first four games.

Governor Pence Stands By Decision to Suspend Resettlement of Syrian Refugees

1

Following the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana’s announcement that it  filed suit to challenge Governor Pence’s decision to suspend the resettlement of Syrian refugees, spokeswoman Kara Brooks released the following statement.

“Governor Pence took decisive action a week ago to put the safety and security of the people of Indiana first by suspending the state’s participation in the resettlement of Syrian refugees. The governor is confident he has the authority to suspend the state’s participation in the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Indiana and will not reverse course until the Administration and Congress take action to pause this program and implement measures necessary to address security gaps acknowledged by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

“The governor believes that public safety is not a partisan issue. A bipartisan majority of governors have taken similar actions. Last week, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to pause the entry of Syrian refugees until proper security screening measures are implemented.

“The governor believes that caution and compassion are not mutually exclusive. We can take measures to ensure the security of our nation even while we continue to extend support and refuge to people around the world fleeing from the ravages of hardship and war.”

COA: Court properly denied father’s motions in termination case

The Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed the termination of a father’s rights over his young son Monday, finding the trial court acted within its discretion when it denied his motions for a continuance and order to transport from where he was incarcerated to the Indianapolis court.

J.E. was removed from his mother and father at two days old and placed in foster care. Since his removal, father K.E. has seen his son twice. K.E. was jailed shortly after the removal for failure to appear at pretrial hearings in his Class D felony synthetic identity deception case. He received probation for the conviction, which was later revoked for failure to report. K.E. was then sent to a Department of Correction facility in Edinburgh.

In October 2014, the Department of Child Services sought to terminate father’s parental rights. He was represented by counsel at a February 2015 pretrial hearing and sought to continue the fact-finding hearing until after his projected release in July 2015. He also sought transport from the facility in Edinburgh to the Indianapolis court. The trial court denied both motions.

K.E. was able to participate telephonically in the April 2015 hearing. The court terminated his parental rights shortly thereafter.

In In the Matter of the Term. of the Parent-Child Relationship of J.E., and K.E. v. The Ind. Dept. of Child Services, 49A05-1505-JT-437, the Court of Appeals held that the trial court acted within its discretion in denying father’s motions for continuance and to transport. K.E. didn’t present any evidence to the appellate court concerning how he would have better assisted counsel in preparing and presenting his case had a continuance been granted, so he did not show any prejudice stemming from the court ruling.

The trial court noted in denying his motion for transport that it considered the factors outlined in In re C.G., 954 N.E.2d 910, 917 (Ind. 2011). In that case, the Indiana Supreme Court mentioned 11 factors the trial court should balance regarding transport orders. Father argued that the trial court had to make a finding on each factor, but C.G.’s list comprises factors to be considered, not elements to be proven, Judge Terry Crone wrote.

“We do not read C.G. to require the trial court to specify that it did not find certain factors compelling or even relevant to Father’s case. In other words, having considered the logistical issues surrounding an order to transport an inmate from the Edinburgh correctional facility to the juvenile courtroom in Indianapolis, the court reasoned that Father’s participation could be achieved by another means,” Crone wrote.
