Indiana county to allow Nativity scene with Bill of Rights

0

IL NEWS for www.theindianalawyer.com

A southeastern Indiana county that was at the center of a legal battle over a Nativity scene on its courthouse lawn will allow a mix of religious and secular displays this holiday season, including a manger holding the Bill of Rights.

The Indianapolis Star reports the Franklin County courthouse, 70 miles southeast of Indianapolis, also will include other secular displays, such as winter solstice banners. The displays result from a lawsuit filed last December by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation arguing the privately owned Nativity scene violated the First Amendment because it represents an endorsement of religion.

A judge ruled in September there’s no proof of a constitutional violation and said any alleged misconduct was corrected when county officials enacted an ordinance permitting public use of the lawn.

Through December 11, the Public Education Foundation of Evansville, Inc., is offering its Holiday Thank a-Teacher and Salute-A-Staffer program, with cookies for the honorees.

With a donation to PEF, parents, guardians or grandparents can thank a particular teacher or staff member while also supporting PEF classroom grants.  Also, former students who wish to express gratitude for textbook and life lessons are encouraged to do so.

Requests must be received by December 11, and all thank you cards will be sent with a small gift to honorees by December 14.  The school principal will also be notified for the staff and teachers’ records.  Cookie coupons are good through December 21.

Taylor scores 33 points, Eagles win 111-101

0

University of Southern Indiana junior guard Jeril Taylor  (Louisville, Kentucky) scored 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 111-101 victory over Kentucky State University Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI goes to 3-1 overall and 2-0 on the six-game homestand, while KSU sees its record go to 1-3.

Taylor, who had 20 points in the first half and 13 points in the second half, was eight-of-15 from the field, four-of-10 from long range, and 13-of-16 from the charity stripe. He also has posted back-to-back double-doubles to start the homestand.

The Eagles opened the game with a cold streak, hitting only one-of-five and six-of-20 from the field in the first 10 minutes. USI’s offense would warm up in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, hitting nine of its last 16 shots and building a lead of as many as 12 points (43-31) before going into halftime with a 55-48 lead.

In the second half, USI quickly extended the margin to nine points, 59-50, before KSU rallied to tie the score twice and take a 67-65 lead with 14:10 to play. The Eagles responded with an 11-2 run of their own and took the lead for good, extending the advantage to 15 points twice before settling for the 111-101 victory.

Individually, four additional Eagles joined Taylor in double-digit scoring. Freshman guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) was second on the team with 20 points, scoring 11 in the second half, while senior forward George Edwards (Chicago, Illinois) had 19 points, also dropping in 11 second half points.

Junior forward T.J. Tisdell (Cape Girardeau, Missouri) and junior guard Bobo Drummond (Peoria, Illinois) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 14 points and 11 points, respectively. Drummond also had a team-high six assists.

As a team, USI set a single-game record with 42 free throws made, breaking the old record of 40 against Saint Joseph’s College in 1996-97. The Eagles also have scored 100-or-more points for the second-straight game for the first time since 2009-10.

USI crosses the halfway point of its six-game homestand this weekend when it hosts the ninth-annual Bill Joergens Memorial Classic at the PAC November 27-28. The 2015 classic features USI, number one-ranked Bellarmine University, fifth-ranked Midwestern State University, and Ohio Valley University. Game times each night is 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with live coverage on GoUSIEagles.com.

USI women’s hoops dominate inside, win in rout

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball junior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois) recorded a double-double as the Screaming Eagles defeated visiting Alice Lloyd College, 82-45, in a rout Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

Wascher had a season-high 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks as USI rebounded from its only loss of the season.

USI (3-1) scored the final 12 points of the first period to build an 18-6 first quarter lead; then scored the first four points of the second quarter to go up 22-6.

Wascher scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes as USI led 37-20 at the intermission.

The Screaming Eagles used a 6-0 run that lasted a little more than a minute in the early stages of the third quarter to inflate their lead to 43-23. They ended the third period with a 15-0 run to build a commanding 58-27 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

In addition to Wascher, the Screaming Eagles got 13 points and seven rebounds from sophomore guard/forward Kaydie Grooms (Marshall, Illinois) as well as 12 points and three assists from junior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana).

Junior guard Kendyl Dearing (Huntingburg, Indiana) added 10 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Randa Harshbarger (Philo, Illinois) had 10 points, eight assists, and five steals.

USI dominated the paint throughout the contest as it out-rebounded Alice Lloyd, 45-30, and outscored the Eagles, 60-18, in the lane. The Screaming Eagles also had a 35-9 advantage in points off turnovers as well as a 21-2 edge in second-chance points.
